      You talked about directors being handcuffed by canon. I don't see how that can be a thing. The entire reason why I like star wars is because it has deep lore, rules and mythos. If a director wants to tell a certain story and just slap a star wars skin on it I'm out. Lore should not be handcuffs. If a writer or director is not familiar with the material get someone who is to write and or direct it. Each time the rules are broken or canon is changed it makes me less and less interested. Am I in the minority ? If so that's ok. I'll find something else.

    If we get a second season of Obi-Wan, I would like a more immediate story with Obi-Wan going on a spiritual journey learning how to become a force ghost. Like in the Clone Wars episode where Yodi did those trials. The 5 priestesses give Obi-Wan the trials. You can bring Vader, Maul, Satine back that way as well akin to Luke’s Dagobah cave scene.

    George understands mythology, as a friend and student of Joseph Campbell. That’s wisdom of mythology adds a lot of depth to his writing. Something that a lot of other writers don’t seem to understand.

      The idea that Rian threw everything JJ “set-up” is entirely false. Folks just didn’t speculate responsibly and decided what they believed was set-up didn’t happen.

    I remember back when Disney announced Legends and the new continuity, and claimed it would all be held together by the Story Group. It sounded good, but as someone who has been on the periphery of the industry through family and friends, I was always suspicious. The reality of Hollywood is that there is a very clear - and very, very arrogant - hierarchy, and it is based on exactly one thing: how much revenue they have brought in (be it via box office, streaming, whatever). Anyone who comes to a major director or producer and say "well you can't do that because it breaks canon that was established in this animated series" is going to get laughed out of the room. They do what they want, and will tell you up and down that you can paper over it with a "certain point of view" kind of explanation ala Obi Wan.
    On the flipside, the story group hasn't done the kind of quality control I would have hoped, and a lot of the stories they have told in other media have been... not great.

    I like the bad batch in spite of the filler episodes. I don't obsess over it like Andor or Mando, but the batch does present some important lore related stuff ( order 66 from the clones perspective, war mantle, the phasing out of clones for stormtrooper conscripts, the role of Rex, and Cody coming to terms with his attempt to kill Obi Wan - you can see his confusion and regret in epi 3. ) The Crosshair episode was actually moving and powerful. One can enjoy the series if one is patient with the filler episode side quests which are there to entertain the kids while dropping nuggets of overall plot. As Kristian pointed out, epi 5 revealed more of PHee's overall skill set and bond with Omega. This will be interesting if it plays into the overall plot.

    I will boldly say yes because of the Disney Trilogy and the shows that came after to an extent made a mess with Star wars lore like Force healing came out of nowhere in Episode 3 Anakin went darkside because The Emperor mention if he went to the darkside he will have the healing power to save Padme which didn't happen now in Episode 9 and the Mandalorian show to an extent Force healing is a thing with no explanation behind the power. The disrespect of Obi-Wan and Luke Skywalker's characters, Mark Hamill was disappointed in his role as Luke in the Disney Trilogy he said it in many interviews before the last Jedi was released and yes his character is nothing like him in the original trilogy he made some silly mistakes that make no sense to force him to give up as a Jedi. Obi-Wan is a complete moron in his own show calling Leia's name in front of 4 Stormtroopers on the vehicle almost getting caught was one of the stupid moments in the show and somehow Darth Vader and Obi-Wan have these crazy force powers out of nowhere to hype up fans in the final battle of season 1 just felt out of place to me. I could go on about how Rey and Kylo force connection doesn't make sense in Episode 8 and 9 and how lame Boba Fett is in his own show and The Death Star and Palatine's return in Ep9 but I'll leave it here so my comment won't be too long. While there are some positive good editions to the lore the bad and confusing outweighs the good.

    Hey Sith Council. Love the show. I’m a big fan. As a longtime fan of Classic Star Wars and the EU especially I have to admit I’m a little concerned the SW universe overall is in shambles mostly because of the damage done with the Disney Wars films. I’ve been enjoying The Mandalorian but I can’t shake the feeling that this show is going to start to connect more and more to those films as I’ve predicted before. It only reiterates my belief that either Mandalorian or even a new series should’ve been set in the Old Republic not 100 years before the prequels but thousands of years prior to everything. To see Jedi and Sith in their prime would be such a treat especially diving into the lore something that outside of The Mandalorian and Fallen Order has been seriously lacking. I’m at the point where I’m content to watch some of these shows but not with the intention of getting too excited. The games are exploring new aspects of the SW universe: SW Eclipse, KOTOR remake, Jedi Survivor. Not sure why the films can’t do this. But at the end of the day I’ll always have my EU collection to fall back on. As excited as I am for Mandalorian I’m not getting my hopes up anymore because I’ve been disappointed several times over.

  • @protector_of_the_realms
    @protector_of_the_realms Рік тому +2

    Yeah unfortunately 100% the canon is extremely messy atm and here’s a couple of the biggest examples:
    You have retconns with Clone Wars season 7 and how Maul was captured compared to the Ahsoka book (though however there is an out because the fight between Maul and Ahsoka cuts when he’s thrown out the window. You could very well draw this out and say they had to track Maul down again and set a ray shield trap for him which he then escaped out of and then we see his actual capture later. I don’t think this is intended at all though but it’s a head canon possibility).
    But Tales of the Jedi also retcons the Ahsoka novel in that episode 6 she meets Bail at the funeral but in the book she doesn’t meet him until much later and Bail doesn’t know she’s alive and R2 plays a big part in their meeting. Also that episode is basically a copy of an event in the Ahsoka novel but done on such a smaller scale and it’s hella rushed and not emotional or as epic in that book which is a whole climax and emotional release. It’s also just really weird that essentially the exact same thing fundamentally happened twice in such a short amount of time but obviously that’s not supposed to be the case as it’s supposed to be a retcon.
    Also in tales of the Jedi there’s a debate about Dooku and when he left the order. In the books he leaves it before TPM and in moments comes across very dark already, in episode 4 it seems like he’s still in the order like he was in legends but people theorise he has left but is just on good terms with the order. However if that’s the case I don’t think he should still have his lightsaber for obvious reasons and in a comic a Jedi is extremely surprised that he even has a lightsaber (who Dooku then has to kill) before they found out he was a sith.
    In Bad Batch Kanan’s order 66 experience is completely different to his comic. In the comic it’s much more thought out and better handled with character moments and military campaign objectives while in Bad Batch he’s just chucked in there for forced fan service which ruins the moment and harms the notion of his distrust of clones a little. Ultimately this is what I’m most upset by because Kanan is in my top 10 Star Wars characters and this was done so much worse for such a poor reason which was forced fan service.
    You have broken physics in TFA which makes it impossible for me to fit it within the rest of the Star Wars canon (Starkiller base sniping a system with 100% accuracy from a galaxy away powered by the sun at a speed faster than hyperspace which should be impossible which everyone also can see across the galaxy in real time on different planets despite light not working that way in universe as we know Leia can still see Aldeeran’s star post ANH after it’s blown up). Narrative wise that’s also messy as this big red lazy reset button (which is honestly the worst macguffin I’ve ever seen even by JJ Abrams standards which is saying something haha) makes the galaxy stagnant and screws the progression and renders the past accomplishments and legacies of characters redundant to repeat the Empire vs Rebels plot.
    You also have further repetitive stuff in Fallen Order and Kenobi which makes no sense. Plus you have characters in both of those projects looking like idiots and out of character (Obi-wan just does and says things he’d never do and he would never have let Reeva walk away or trust his whole mission of protecting Luke to a literal lying scammer he had met for a total of 1 minute prior who drops it conveniently anyway for Reeva to get it) and power levels are completely mucked up between Vader in both, Kenobi, Cere, Cal and the nightsister girl. And in Kenobi we see him and Owen end on good terms but the next time we see them in a comic Owen has spit coming out of his mouth from raging about Obi-wan even coming near Luke and also Obi-wan apparently had never touched his lightsaber in years as he says in the comics but due to the show he had actually used it very recently. But yeah the show also just makes no sense to what we see in the OT with Owen and Ben having a rocky relationship and Ben pushing Luke to kill his father, Ben saying Luke is the only hope and Leia also never knowing Obi-wan apart from war stories when he last helped her father in the clone wars. Also the inquisitors are radically different and nothing like what we see in Rebels in demeanour and appearance.
    And in Fallen Order Vader is searching for a Jedi holocron about force sensitive youngling but that makes no sense and is out of character because we see him destroy that holocron in the Vader comics shortly after ROTS as he doesn’t want his master to have access to it and more potential inquisitors. Vader hates the inquisitors so he’d destroy the holocron himself not let Cal retrieve it. And there’s some other inconsistencies with Fallen Order and the Ahsoka novel.
    Plus hyperspace is super inconsistent as always ahaha. And also a small one is Cassian’s sepratist backstory but there’s still room for that to be a thing to be fair
    So I just make my own head canon and for me the better story in whatever form trumps the other inconsistency. I take the Ahsoka novel over episode 6 of Tales of the Jedi and Fallen Order. I take the Kanan comic over Bad Batch episode 1. I take Tales of the Jedi episode 4 over the Dooku comics for now and I just don’t bother trying to fit the Kenobi show or ST in my canon haha. Ultimately that’s how George thought of it though. He said there were 3 pillars of canon, his canon, Lucasfilm’s canon which was the EU and then the fan’s canon. I honestly began subscribing to that last year and take whatever Lucas contributed to as paramount and fill in the gaps with the stories I love both from Disney and legends. I’m so much happier as I’m no longer upset by screw ups or content that I really dislike as it just never actually happened for me in the Star Wars universe instead

      Face it, the books not canon anymore. Regardless of what they said, the books and comics are only canon for as long as until a live action or animation writer decides to retcon them. Don't get attached.

      @protector_of_the_realms Рік тому

      @@kevthepoet You misunderstand. I don’t care what they say anymore. The shows and films retcon each other too. I’m taking the better story as canon, idc what form that takes wether it’s in prose or through visual storytelling. For example the Ahsoka book is definitely way more canon for me than Episode 6 of Tales of the Jedi which is just so mediocre and lackluster. And the Kanan comic is 100% canon over the Bad Batch episode 1 which is just not good at all. The Kenobi comics get the characters right and are more true to the OT and don’t contradict or ruin anything so they’re also 100% more canon than the Kenobi show. And the Kenobi book by John Jackson Miller even is as well despite that being Legends so that’s also apart of my canon over the Kenobi show which ruins everything and doesn’t make any sense or fit anywhere

    I think the one thing missing in the canon conversation is how little people care about canon connectivity with books and comics. Rogue One made a billion dollars because it was a movie. Most people who loved that movie, probably saw it multiple times and never thought once about picking up a comic book telling them how Andor met K2SO. That reality is shitty for comics and book fans, but the truth is that the canon set up in movies and shows will always matter more. KK isn't going to announce that the canon is broken because of a comic book storyline inconsistency.

  • @davidbiggy4650
    @davidbiggy4650 Рік тому

    I believe the biggest problem with the Star Wars canon is that it really never had boundaries, even when George Lucas himself said the only canon that mattered was the one he specifically had put out there. The reason for that is continuity. It's almost impossible to maintain true continuity when you're talking about such an expansive franchise developed over generations, with dozens of focal characters and hundreds of side characters, and a gazillion finer points, technicalities and specifics regarding everything from ships to droids to worlds to varying species (besides Basic-speaking humans - they're mainly the focal characters), The Force, etc. The writers, directors, producers don't all see the same things, don't all develop stories the same way, develop their own visions for the outcomes of their stories utilizing various paths, and explore their little worlds inside the larger world differently. When each one has his or her own sandbox in which to play, the sand isn't always going to be tossed, kicked, shifted, maneuvered, shoveled, packed or sifted the same way.
    Even with a story group as detailed and hardcore as the one with Lucasfilm, some little tidbits are going to become ajar from something that previously may have been put out there, especially within the novels and comics, where a whole different set of editors and production people are overseeing the processes that are extremely lengthy and bearish to work through on a long-term basis. Something's bound to get missed, overshadowed, forgotten or just plain screwed up. Unfortunately, that's a byproduct of the enormity of the franchise and having all the gazillions of stories that can be told within it developed using a plethora of formats. Even with highly focused collaborative efforts, some things are going to get missed or altered a little bit for the sake of the creative process and the goal of that particular element within the franchise. That's just the way these things work.
    And, sure ... is it a little frustrating or annoying when something we thought was the way it was is altered a little, or maybe a bit more than a little? Yeah. But we also have to remember that the ones developing the stories reserve the right to make alterations as they see fit, regardless of our feelings or "the way it was," especially if they have a solid reasoning as to why they're doing so. Obviously, that's if they even realize they're doing so. Besides that, these people are really busy. They don't always have the time to go back and extensively review every little nuance of what came before for a certain character, story arc, etc., especially if what previously was put out there occurred within a book or comic. And the truth is, many elements brought forth in a book, comic or video game (and don't forget, some franchise fans don't play video games, or read comics or books) might take way too long to develop within a film or TV series, so it has to either get ignored, axed or slightly redeveloped in some way. Again, that's just the way these things work. It's an unfortunate circumstance of the creative processes generated by many individuals.
    Of course, as fans who are buying into all of it, the way we can overcome potential letdowns, disappointments and otherwise negative reactions is to remember this: expecting all those involved to get it or do it right (or the way you believe it to be right) 100% of the time, without alteration at some point or in some manner, is both unrealistic and a recipe for letdown, disappointment and otherwise negative reaction. In other words, this stuff happens - don't let it bring you down too much. If something within the "canon" gets mixed up, altered or flat-out restructured, take it for what it's worth and move on. It's not like you're going to be able to change it, anyway.

    I'm sticking to the Expanded Universe comics and novels. I respect all materials to be legitimate story-telling mediums of their own, and since these things were meant to be the original official Star Wars continuity made in the George Lucas Era with lots of input from and collaboration with the man himself, it will always be the primary Star Wars canon for me. I'll still check on Disney Star Wars every now and then, but I'll treat it as a rebooted alternate universe that will never reach the depth and details of the EU because of corporate interference, lack of creativity due to the current political atmosphere, and their disregard for their own new canon materials. I've been phasing most of the Disney era and TCW figures out of my six-inch collection and focusing on collecting EU characters, which will help me remove Ahsoka and the sequel trilogy characters from my consciousness, and burn the Expanded Universe deeper into my general conception of the Star Wars mythology whenever I look at my shelf.

    The Unknown Regions are what they need most, a blank canvas. Obi-Wan 2 money talks. Tatooine is a dead-end, no story. So tell Andor arcs of a few key days at other locations. Tell the story of The Emperor and Vader hunting the remaining Jedi and force sensitives, and Obi-Wan at the edges saving a few. Can't redo Obi-Wan v. Vader, but can do Obi-Wan v. Palpatine.

    Yes, it is too messy. I’m giving Filoni and Favs the benefit of the doubt that at some point the various series, and a new canon trilogy will retcon some of the il-fated sequel trilogy, and anchor a coherent future. So many opportunities were missed with the sequels, and they can’t afford another massive swing and miss. I hope that they are brave enough, and all that is happening now amounts to setting the table to actually swing big, and connect.

      Would this be the same Dave Filoni that sees Rian Johnson as a mentor, credits Johnson wirh encouraging him to move into live-action filmmaking, has referenced many of The Last Jedi's visual, thematic, and story elements in his own work, and responded enthusiastically to The Rise of Skywalker's planned story beats in production meetings (as per the official 'Art Of' book)? Or a different Filoni that I'm not aware of? And the same Jon Favreau that spent much of his own series setting up the origins of Snoke, The First Order, and Luke's Jedi Academy? Or a different Favreau that I'm not aware of?
      Just because a number of fans have come to see their own idealised fannishness projected onto and reflected back in Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau ('he just gets it!'), that doesn't mean that Filoni and Favreau themselves think like embittered fans. Even leaving aside the notion that any major movie studio would ever scrub a $4.5 billion grossing, two-thirds critically-acclaimed trilogy of films from the record books on vindictive grounds over the hysterical wailings of a tiny minority of entitled fans is so absurd that it's scarcely worth even thinking it.

      @@JBlood-gf5pv well there you go then, that's proof positive that what Dave Filoni really wants to do with his career is spend eight years of his creative prime and all his ernergies remaking and retconning a trilogy of movies that someone else has already made, isn't it? Notwithstanding that he's already got at least four other series currently being made under his immediate supervision. Notwithstanding that Filoni has already been at Lucasfilm for eighteen years now working exclusively on Star Wars when his collaborators on Airbender have moved on to making their own original content, and he might reasonably want to move on and do other things in his career.
      But retconning other people's movies, that's what he must really want to spend his time doing.

    44:01 Lol I already don't take Disney canon seriously considering how exactly Cobb Vanth acquired Boba Fett's armor in the Aftermath novels was changed up in Mando season 2. Or in the Vader comic, the Darth has a wayfinder and journey's to Exogol finding out about Sidious secret Sith Fleet in cold storage; yet in Rise of Skywalker backstory, Luke & Lando were trying to find a way to get to Exogol but never managed to get hold of Vader's wayfinder at his castle on Mustafar. Yet Anakin never bothered to give his son any kind of "sign", or nothing to help him get that wayfinder? Or the color of Kanan's master's lightsaber being changed up, along with how exactly his backstory went regarding order 66 in the comic, and that being changed up for the prologue of Bad Batch.
    So really Disney have gone completely back on what they said about how ALL their published Starwars comics, books and video-games would be consistent to all their movies and series. Looks to me like Kathy's Lucasfilm Story Group are useless.

There was some amazing stuff in there but in general Star Wars has the same weak 3D animation style that I just can't get into. Would love to see Star Wars make something at the level of Arcane. I am dying to see DC animation do the same thing which has fallen into the same cheap style for decades.

    I did write another comment detailing the biggest messy inconsistencies, I’m truly sorry for anyone who read through that monster ahaha. But in summary most of the messy stuff comes from Fallen Order, Tales of the Jedi, Kenobi, TFA and the Bad Batch and they screw with the other shows, films, comics or books (especially the Ahsoka novel and the Kanan comic run which is disappointing because those 2 in particular are some of the best Star Wars content ever written and the things that contradict it have worse replacement moments or things in them that make less sense)
    But I just make my own head canon now and for me the better story in whatever form trumps the other inconsistency. So for example I take the Ahsoka novel over episode 6 of Tales of the Jedi and that along with the Vader comics over Fallen Order. I take the Kanan comic over Bad Batch episode 1. I take Tales of the Jedi episode 4 over the Dooku comics for now and I just don’t bother trying to fit the Kenobi show or ST in my canon haha. Ultimately that’s how George thought of it too though. He said there were 3 pillars of canon, his canon, Lucasfilm’s canon which was the EU and then the fan’s canon. I honestly began subscribing to that last year and take whatever Lucas contributed towards as paramount and fill in the gaps with the stories I love both from Disney and legends. I’m so much happier man let me tell you lmao. I’m no longer upset by screw ups or content that I really dislike as it just never actually happened for me in the Star Wars universe instead now. I truly think this is the way lol
