I am 54 and 45lbs overweight. Which is depressing considering I ran a marathon in 2017. I am now determined to run a half marathon on my 55th birthday in May despite not running for at least 4 years. Wish I had someone to film the process. Maybe I will try myself. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for the inspiration.
Hello John, I cannot DM you directly, but I would like to discuss how I can help you with weight loss and getting ready for your marathon. How can we get to have a chat?
I am 52, endurance athlete (not to Marks caliber) but I have been where you are and trying to drop weight while training for a medium to long distance event comes with challenges. While on the face of it, a race seems like a good motivator, statistically you will gain back after the event. Ask me how I know, I have years of data to show lol. Also, running heavy, especially at our age, is hard on our body, especially the knees. My advice, find a different mindset. Like “I want to be in shape to be able to start training for an event. When I finally turned the corner and stopped being. “The worlds fattest endurance athlete” is when the “ability” was more important than an event. I love cycling and when I am not fit, I can’t enjoy it as much. The feeling of hitting a hill hard and at the top thinking “omg I can do that at 52” is a different mindset, and more sustainable than finishing an event. Best of luck to you!
Yep, same here! First Hyrox in Birmingham after watching Marks channel. Most people still have never heard of it so they should probably pay Mark for advertising 😀 Great tips for a newbie so thank you!
Awesome advice. Thanks, Mark. The best, most sensible, grounding, realistic tips I have seen. Doing my first HYROX in Melbourne next Saturday. I am 55yo and used to be that skinny distance runner but I have focussed on all the other exercises over the last 6 months and completely changed my body shape. I love it.
Can definitely attest to the 'look at everybody else' part. Growing up a swimmer, i started my first triathlon at 17 alongside the pros. Then while i was putting on socks and cycling shorts, every other competitor overtook me with theit pointy helmets. Didnt see anyone else the rest of the event, and they'd packed up the finish line by the time i finished 😅 I was so embarassed. ...anyway, never be consumed by where you are to anyone else in your start group. Turns out i finished in the top 25%.
The way you share your knowledge with regular drops of humour is just brilliant - "always happy to answer your questions, unless you're in my age group" 😂. I must have watched this vid three times (before my first hyrox in Nov) and pick up something new every time. Thank you 🙌
I love the CrossFit jabs. This is a really cool video. I'm a trainer and a long distance runner. these tips are the business for anyone that's not experienced in competitions. Nice job.
This was the video I was looking for…tips and debrief from a regular participant. I have been on the fence about signing up for my first event as a regular gym goer…your video gave me what I needed to sign up knowing I what to expect and I can get through it - Thanks so much!
All the best for the 100K today! I would go as far as to say that these 10 tips are valid for every conpetition event, be it Hyrox, a running event or a triathlon. For me it's "preparation wins battles, not bravery"😉 I feel most confident when I know my gear is 100% working and in place. Then I walk through the location and almost enter a meditative state. My wife is completely different. For her, it's enough to be at the location 15 minutes before the starting signal, drop off her sports bag and then go straight to the start section 😉 No seconds wasted
My partner and I signed up for the mixed doubles as our first in Hamburg this November, just for fun, after stumbling across your channel. He’s an all-round sporty generalist, and I’m a devout distance athlete. In other words, he’ll be fine, and I’m probably going to end up a seize-y, crampy mess of forgotten high-intensity anaerobic training. But I’m looking forward to it. If nothing else, I’ve enjoyed the variety it’s brought to my training!
My wife and I are about to book our first Hyrox event, and this was brilliant information, thanks Mark! We're really excited to have something to focus on, and train for together. Love your tongue-in-cheek jokes, too 😉
Great advice as always, heel lock something I hadn't considered for Sled push but 100% utilising that for training and event in Brum. Keep up the good work
Thanks Mark. With the previous videos about Hyrox, I assumed it was a UK thing. But today I made the effort and went to the website, and surprise surprise, it's happening in many countries, including Germany. Now, I'm tempted for a debut in Frankfut on Dec 10.
Best tip for your first time is to arrive, and just take 5/10 minutes carefully watching all the runners going past. You will fast realise that it is not all jacked athletes and there are a lot of normal people.
I have my first HYROX this coming Sunday (5th May), thanks for the tips & tricks! Can't wait to get started! Not looking forward to the sweaty commute home 😆
Good luck with the TPC today, Mark. Thames Path Challenge is flat, sign up for the Jurassic Coast challenge next year.... beautiful scenery and tough course
Love it, hope i can see you in Barcelona in March, its gonna be my first, but you dont have to worry about me, Im 53 and a Crossfiter, no threath at all!!
Going to watch the London Hyrox today, Nov 19th, with a view to compete there next April. Your excellent video will give me a good insight into the event as a spectator and an athlete. Point no.10 was well balanced. Thanks for doing this Mark.
Was just about to ask your advice then realised we will be in the same age group at London in November so thought better of it as don't want to trip over my laces. Joking aside great video and some really good advice. Looking forward to my 1st Hyrox event in November.
Great content as always! My favourite fitness UA-camr by far. I’m very much the same, I like to be able to do a bit of everything and focus my training onto the specific event a few months before. Currently training for my first marathon around kielder then after that it’s time to focus on hyrox for January! Keep up the good work 👍🏼
@@MarkLewisfitness Interesting, thanks. I have a pair of Altra Superior 5, but hadn’t thought of using them for Hyrox. Is the grip suitable for the sled push?
@@Fabianyeo1 Ample - I never have grip issue. The only issue is to make sure you are comfortable running that distance, in that shoe on a very hard surface.
Hey Mark, a suggestion for showering. I swim in the ocean year round. When I get out I have a couple 2 liter bottles of water that I rinse off with. Then a quick towel dry and use my changing robe to strip off my wet gear and get dry clothes on. Easy to do right in the parking lot. There are a variety of changing robes on the market, some really light weight.
Excellent info. I plan on being at least the 2nd person to have a water pack when I do Manchester in January 😀 My first one…can’t wait, and my gym has as recently as last week become affiliated with hyrox so that’ll be handy for prepping!
Mark really been enjoying watching your videos about Hyrox and learing about it. Hyrox as far as i can tell has not come to Australia yet. Make's me wish i had some money to bring it here. Anyway. Keep up the great work look forward to watching how you go and of course your continued cycling on zwift. I am a runner on zwift. Will do we need someone to give you a treadmill to review to get you running on zwift as well. Or do you like running out side more.
On the topic of running a wrong number of laps, I participated in my first hyrox race last year as a relay. We were 5 teams that were wrongly sent off on an extra round of running due to miscommunication between the officials themselves. Counting laps on your own usually isn't too bad, especially as a relay
I'm in my early 40s and run 3x a week and I still run at 7 minute/km. I just CANNOT seem to get my heartrate down. I really want to get into this as a good friend does it in his 50s and is in fantastic shape.
Great video Mark, 1st time finding Hyrox! How do they decide which weight you should be pushing/pulling (sled) or the kettlebell weight for the farmers carry?
Mark, have you tried using a belt instead of the vest ? I use a Salomon Pulse belt for runs up to 2 hours. Holds a 500ml soft flask, gels a phone and a light jacket which you don't need for hyrox but now you know lol. I find it much cooler than wearing a vest, heat wise not I'm too cool for school cool
I signed up for Hyrox Houston, Feb 25. Your video is very helpful. You talk about hydration, how about nutrition? If this takes me 90-120 minutes (as I am guessing it will), I think I'm going to want gels or something simple to eat.
100,000 people compeated last seeson in HYROX and its going to be over 180,000 this season. The goal is over 400,000 per season. UK events are all sold out with 8000+ people competing over two days.
Thank you so much for this helpful video! I am trying to get the courage to run the Hyrox In NY... Wondering if someone can tell me what time the races start? Can you somewhat start at your own time that morning? Hearing it's very hot knocked me back a few pegs😢 I hope there's some air on.
“You will not be the oIdest person there or the slowest person there or the heaviest person there, although three of you will be”😂
Or maybe one of you will be all of those 3 😂😂😂
I have my first HYROX next Saturday and found this video SO valuable. Thank you pal, beyond grateful. Youve got yourself a new subscriber 👊

Your previous upload got me from a 10 day slump to a 7 mile, 13.5 mile and 8 miler on subsequent days. Feeling great again
Came for the tips, stayed for the one liners!
Thanks, Mark. Looking forward to my first Hyrox in Birmingham in October!
Ditto this ^^. I'm also doing my first Hyrox in October in Birmingham after finding about Hyrox on this channel. I might be all three 🤣🤣

It was invented in Germany ! 😁
See you there ;-)
First hyrox next month. Very helpful info!! Doing something the first time can be nerve wracking.

Oh my gosh, I am listening while running and almost peed my pants laughing multiple times. Best tips ever!!!
Break that 15 hour goal on the 100Km run! Get after it Mark. It’s who you are. Good advice for Hyrox.
Love the humour. Thanks for the hints!
Good luck with the TPC today, Mark. Thames Path Challenge is flat, sign up for the Jurassic Coast challenge next year.... beautiful scenery and tough course
6:25 - wait… there’s calories in toothpaste?!?!?!
"And somebody shout: you look so young". I love you jokes :)
Thanks for smile on my face on Monday!
Thanks for the video - I’m doing a Hyrox in Melbourne in about 4 weeks. Aim is to just finish. Already wasted 1.5 weeks with the flu!
Thanks for taking the time to make such a great video. We too have signed up because of your videos. Looking forward to London in November 😱
Thanks for the tips. None related but curious how you got videos of yourself during the event.
My wife films - and when she runs with me in the doubles, one of my kids films.
Love it, hope i can see you in Barcelona in March, its gonna be my first, but you dont have to worry about me, Im 53 and a Crossfiter, no threath at all!!
This is awesome advice! Really looking forward to my first one in London next year! Need to do something more than rowing though to prepare!
lots of services and truck parks have showers too, probably worth checking if they're open beforehand
Great guide Mark, signed up for my 1st Hyrox in Birmingham and will be using many of the tips you mention here, thanks.
Man, that clip with the pull up fail gets me every time 😂
Thanks - I have my first race coming up and this is helpful!
Great Video! I’ve got my first Hyrox in London November 19th I’m so excited!
Thanks for the video Mark, first Hyrox coming up in Singapore!
Excellent video - thanks Mark. Doing Hyrox Sydney in August and these tips are invaluable (especially tip 4 re water)
Just signed up for London May 2023. Can’t wait!
love your humour! and this video made me less anxious for the upcoming hyrox!
Going to watch the London Hyrox today, Nov 19th, with a view to compete there next April. Your excellent video will give me a good insight into the event as a spectator and an athlete. Point no.10 was well balanced. Thanks for doing this Mark.
Your mix and match band on your Garmin makes it look like an 1980s Swatch. Ah, sweet memories.
I will never do this event but that was a superb one-liner in the opening seconds.
😂 thanks.
This made me laugh. Some very dry delivery of some funny lines!! And helpful too. 🙌
Was just about to ask your advice then realised we will be in the same age group at London in November so thought better of it as don't want to trip over my laces. Joking aside great video and some really good advice. Looking forward to my 1st Hyrox event in November.
See you there!
Thanks for this Martin. I signed up to this years London event so this is super helpful
Hi Mark ..What trainers are you using for these events ..Thanks
Superb advice for first timers like me. Even if I don't ever do an event I can now talk a good Hyrox in the Squat Rack area 🤣
Another brilliant and motivating post. Cheers. M.
All the best with the 100km Legend! Happy pacing!
This was an excellent video prep for Hyrox!
Thank you so much. I will be starting in New York in June 23 for the first time. Besides the water bottle I am trying to do all you said.
Once again, brilliant video and advice
Great video Mark very helpful video for first timer
Got my sub just on that basis 🎉
First timer, needed this
Thank you!! 🙏🏿
Nice video. I have some friends doing hyrox events regularly. I didn't think I was fit enough, but I might give a now.
prediction- 1 million subs jul 2024. keep up the amazing clips, mate
Thanks for another great video!
Love the video , how many months would you say you need to prepare for hyrox?
“I sucked what I needed, when I needed it” - I know a few girls who live life with that approach too Mark 😂

Altra superior

Good man delivering with humour ✅
"You might be all three..." I'm trying to imagine a 70 year old 30st man trying Hyrox.
This is literally my target for my one. Anything better than that would be a win for me

Mark looking for shoe recommendations for Hyrox. Thoughts?
Is it possible to get the reference of your orange shoes?

Dude i’m 54 years old and you got me addicted before I even did my first hyrox event (Rotterdam, April 2024). 😂💪🏼👍🇳🇱
Great stuff. No matter what the event, I always take a water pack with me.

Thank you Mark!
Is it possible to come early to watch the previous events? More to see how it works, not to look at muscle-bound men, promise.
So did u notice any impact from ur hyrox training on ur cycling performance?
