    The oil is so clean i can't clearly see where it's up to as some of it smears on the dipstick all the way up on one side on it's route in / out

      I have the same problem! Did you find a way to know the level? I just keep overfilling (I have a leak problem) but no matter if I just put 4L or if it's with the engine light on asking for oil the stick always looks the same, just smeared all the way with a bit of transparent oil without any line anywhere. 🤪

    • @hardcoretam
      @hardcoretam 5 місяців тому

      @@TheSimArchitect I found that wiping it completely dry and putting it in, wait 2 seconds, pull it out and whilst pulling it out keep it as vertical as possible. Look at it vertically as the oik is so thin it runs up giving false readings if checked horizontally.
      Look for the part on the dipsticj where it goes all the way around and it should be between the 2 small holes. Don't always aim for the top. Between both somewhere is perfect. Repeat the process to 3 to 4 times to ensure consistent reading before topping up if needed

      @@hardcoretam The problem is that there's no line anywhere, the entire stick (well, not the entire stick, but most of it) gets greasy with transparent oil. I have an oil leak problem, I lost about 8 L of oil the past time I used it (only travelled once) so it's really transparent but if it didn't spear the entire stick and had any line, anywhere, even if transparent, I'd be able to read. Also, the stick is flat but very flimsy and it only goes inside one way, I can't try a different angle to see if I get any hint. I hope that once I fix the leak I figure out a way. I will drive 150 Km while wasting oil to move to the new place, where I will be able to lift the car and replace a couple of parts, one that must be responsible for the leakage. Can't do it where I live right now as I have no garage. Mechanics want a fortune (fair enough, offer x demand) so I prefer to fix it myself. I will fix the car and get rid of it after. It was a very bad purchase. I want a larger vehicle with a sensor for the oil level. It's easier to predict the future using a crystal ball than reading the oil on my car. 🤪
      Thanks for the tips, though.

    Thanks for clarifying I read the manual correctly lol. Every other car I've had says to check the oil after the engine has got to running temperature and then been left for ten minutes. It's actually pretty impossible to read the dipstick when the engine is warm as the all just spreads all over the length of the dipstick. Great clear video 👍

    I use to do like you say but toyota manual asks to warm up engine than wait for 5/10 minutes than check oil level. The reason is dirt level up oil since with warm or hot engine it melts. With cold oil/engine the level you see it's lower than real.
    I keep checking like you suggest but if I can I compare level observed at cold and warm engine and there is a little difference.

    Thanks for the video. Checking the oil level on our 2014 Toyota Aygo is a bit fidgety - the stick bends and wobbles easily and requires a bit of force to slot it home. I also find that the engine remains hot (after a 30 minute mainly motorway commute) for about 2 hours after parking before its cool enough to check the oil or remove the oil cap. As the car is used for a 30 mile each way work commute daily, we top up every 3 months or so. I use 5W30 as that is what's recommended by AA, Halford etc websites.

      Ho Joanjo, have 170'000 KM with mine and about same oil consumption, I would recommend change oil at 6-7000 km max 1 year, as there is the risk on these cars to have carbon / sludge build up on the oil scraping piston rings then oil consumption goes up more and trouble starts. Also check the color of your oil at dipstick, if it keeps clear light yellowish engine is healthy. And I will also as soon as possible do a gearbox oil change as did it only once in 170'000. I know of one gearbox that failed and oil was cooked inside. Toyota has very long vital fluids change intervals, but at the end we pay the bills for repair, not toyota. With proper attention these engines can last forever...Greetings from Slovenia

    Hello there. Some years ago for every time I checked the engine oil level, I got different level marks. Yeah it was a bit difficult and the funny part I was getting different oil level readings depending on what side of dipstick I was looking to. It took me a while to figure it out, the most accurate oil check level reading is on the dipstick side that measures the lower mark and when the engine is 100% cold (this may vary for different engines). Folks, this engine is greedy and I didn't know it... it burns (in my case) around 0.6L for 2000km so I fear a little hehhehe. I used to think my wife's Aygo needed some serious engine repair, sometimes I still do but everything is okay according to my mechanic. In the beginning I wondered where the freaking hell the oil was going, searched for leaks and nothing! By the way, here in Portugal it is recommended that we use 10W40. The lesson I learned: If it's not a problem, it's a feature, an extra! 😎

    • @CycloneCyd

      @@mikeallan7814 I would describe that level of consumption as 'acceptable' but not normal.. Normal would be zero. 300ml per 1000km is barely acceptable. At that level the sump would be empty between changes, making regular level checks vital

    • @LOREGUINNESS
      @LOREGUINNESS 2 роки тому

      Same here, 08 Aygo petrol. Recentley I did an oil and filter change and poured 3.0 l of oil (it is recommended 3,1 l for oil and filter change). As usual I got 2 different reading per side of the dipstick. I usually find more accurate the lower side of the dipstick (the one pointing on the ground). The least visible mark on that side was slightly over the max and the clearest was just slightly over the min. I checked both cold and warm, without major differences. Keep us tuned folks!
      Thanks for sharing.

Then when checking it after arriving it looked like I'd massively overfilled it. Seems like 1L is the difference between min and max, so unlikely to have overfilled. It isn't really, if you do it according to Toyotas instructions. What makes it hard is people assuming you check the level warm (as you do with most engines) and being unable to get a reading because of the oil returning to the sump along the dipstick 😬 🤘
