  • My Maytag MVWC565FW washer, which is only 2 years and 7 months old, has developed a loud squealing noise in the spin cycle. It occurs as the speed is accelerating then subsides after a while.

I had same squeaky-squeal noise. problem is drive belt is worn. drive belt wears over time and stretches, becomes a little longer. when this happens belt slips on both the motor pulley and drum pulley, causing the noise. go to website for your machine, find parts manual and find belt part number. I paid $7. to replace belt you will have to turn machine over to see underneath. disconnect power and all supply / drain hoses, be ready with rags to clean up water. lay machine on side. when you lay machine down more water will leak from internal. again just have rags to soak up water. remove plastic cover on bottom of machine that covers the belt drive. cover has a couple of bolts holding it on. with cover removed you will see the drive belt connecting the motor pulley and drum pully. you should be able to remove belt with your hands. start by removing belt off of drum pully. this pulley does not have a flange, so belt will slip off. Installing new belt is a little harder because the belt is not worn / stretched out like the old one. I found it best to install new belt using two people. start by installing belt over the motor pulley (smaller pulley with flange) then wrap belt around drum pulley (larger pulley no flange). You will turn the belt onto the larger pulley (does not matter which direction). one person holds the belt in place on the smaller pulley as you the second person turns the belt onto the larger pulley. It may seam impossible but the belt will go on. Use your finger muscles. be careful not to pinch your fingers. be sure that the belt is seated in the center of the larger pulley when done. if to close to one edge it may slip off over time. :)

The repair guy replaced the belt and one of the pulleys.

Mine does the same thing. Have you figured out the cause or fix?

The repair guy told me it was the gearcase (transmission). After he replaced this a couple weeks later, which was a big job, the same noise was there when he ran a test cycle. He then replaced the belt and cam (pulley) and the noise went away. The old belt looked okay but apparently it didn't have enough traction on the surface of the cam (pulley). In hindsight, the repair guy should have done the simple repair first.

@@garyk4017 do you know where I can get these parts? And my washer is doing the exact same thing in this video when it’s spinning was it the pulley that wraps around the belt?

@@gabriellemcelmoyl9490 I believe it was the pulley that the belt goes around. The noise was caused by lack of traction between the belt and the pulley. The Maytag repair guy picked up the belt and pulley at a local appliance parts store. He got a belt that one one size too small, but he tweaked the fit to make it work. The high speed spin was noisier and less smooth after this, so he probably should have used the right size belt. Maybe you can get the parts at RepairClinic.com or some other online parts supplier, if you can't find them locally.

@Pathseeker Yes, I think the repair guy replaced the transmission for no reason.
