Got a BSA Cadet Major for my 6th birthday to use on my grand dads pig farm in 1964. Had loads of BSA's since, last one a BSA S10 about 28 years ago, if i remember right about £300 new. Love the BSA cold hammer forged barrels as accurate as you would ever need, so i thought. Brought a Steyr Hunting 5 & that is crazy accurate, so it should be for the price but my shooting just got 10x better = a lot more rabbits!!
another great review .very clear and uncomplicated ,great for people like me getting back into airguns after many years, after your last review of the HW95,went and bought a 177,keep up the good work, cheers.
Hello Richard and another great review i am a big fan of your channel and purchased the CLX in part based on your take. I have put an HW XLK silencer on my .177 and it is very very quiet , very accurate also. Great light and still short rifle at under 90cm with the silencer and a compact 44mm scope on sports match medium mounts (13mm bsa). The rifle can be de cocked also rather than dry fired when wanting to remove the magazine for storage etc. Once again a very professional and easy to watch format you have ...nice one.
Thanks very much Dobbo. I'm glad we could help and that you are pleased with the Ultra CLX. Not that I'm surprised though - great rifle. Your set up sounds perfect - good decision to not over-scope the rifle and that Weihrauch silencer is one of the best. Take care and thanks for watching.
Thanks for yet another very useful and informative review of the BSA Ultra CLX. I have just purchased this Rifle and must agree that it's an excellent Rifle. I have always wanted to own a BSA and with this been priced very reasonably it allowed me to do so. I have only one small niggle and that's that BSA should include a moderator with the rifle as it's far too loud for pesting and hunting but that's the only gripe i have. Thanks again and keep up the great work. 👍👍👍
Nice review on a very nice little rifle and well done to BSA on that magazine. It sits below the dovetails, is simple to load and totally unobtrusive when inserted into the breech - a vast improvement on the gigantic, oddly shaped monstrosities sitting in some of the far more expensive air rifles in my cabinet. What this rifle really needs is a regulator. I’m glad you reviewed it Richard - it is a substantial improvement on the old ultra.
These are excellent guns .I have a first edition. 177 . It gives the 60 shots stated an is wisper quiet with supplied mod wicked accurate as always . Ps the sweet spot in .177 starts at 195 bar down to 90 bar for 60 . Don't know about the .22 but I doubt it will require 232 bar . I'd estimate 185 - 190 for the .22 version .?
Hi Richard.Great review👍🏻The rifle looked really light in your hands which is great. Nice and compact too. The magazine and the safety looked really neat.I can see it being a great seller. Atb fella👍🏻
Always enjoy your videos Richard, thank you for taking the time to share your insight! That does seem to have quite a crack to it - did you try it with a moderator and did it bring the muzzle report down to sneaky hunting levels of noise?
Thanks very much. I always try to review rifles as they come but I did try the Ultra CLX with a silencer and it is as quiet as any other PCP. Certainly quiet enough for hunting with. Thanks for watching.
I watched a review where the spring on the magazine in conjunction with the bolt pushing the pellet into the barrel, causes lead shavings to spread to the inter workings of the rifle. Also, an issue with rusting between the bottom of the barrel and the top of the air tank. I also heard that the cap covering the filler port becomes loose and is ill fitting after time. Anyone else heard anything?

Dirty Bird targets obscure quite a lot of the image available to the viewer and as a centerfire benchrest shooter in my past aiming small makes us shoot small so may I suggest aiming at say the 'circle' made by the number nine or the upper circle of an 8 and raising the scope by about 10-16 clicks so the group shot does not obscure your precise aiming point. love it, thanks for another great video. Few things ill wish were diferente on the clx platform: the 12 shot magazine is too big and sticks out way to much, a 10 shot mag also will be able to reduce the gap between air cylinder and barrel and more important, a shorter transfer port, plus 10 makes my OCD happy. Question, the 50% increase in shot count, is there more efficiency or the air cylinder is just 50% bigger?
Hi Eric. I'm glad you liked the review. The improvements really make a difference. I think the increased shot capacity is a combination of slightly more air and more efficient use of it.
A great looking rifle to be sure, ( me wishing out loud ) I do wish I could find a stocking dealer for BSA air rifles here in Canada. I know you must have a vast list of rifles and equipment to review Richard, but I would like to see what you think of the Weihrauch HW50S rifle, preferably in .177 ( this is me being picky here as I own one :) )
That's a shame Reg. Have you asked Airguns of Arizona if they have any Canadian retailers? I'd love to get my hands on an HW50 as I am a big fan of Weihrauch springers. I'll add it to the list!
I caused offence with my original review for which I apologise and I have withdrawn it. I am not questioning the integrity of the reviewer in any way. My original comments were based upon long term use, manufacturing issues and poor support. Perhaps it might be beneficial if reviewers who give up their time to undertake their reviews could spare the time to provide a long term review on the same product after a period of use.
Would you be able to advice how many fills would I get from a 3lt Bottle on BSA Ultra clx .177 as I need help to choose as do want be carrying a to heavy Bottle
Hi Godfrey. You should get 12 or 15 fills (300 bar bottle) I'd say, possibly more as the air cylinder on the Ultra is quite small. Its perfectly fine to fill to 180/200 bar rather than the full 232 bar. You'll get fewer shots obviously, but still plenty to keep you going.
Thanks Dave. Yes, it will shoot any pellets, assuming of course its the right calibre. I've always found Air Arms Diabolo Field, JSB and H&N pellets to work best. BSA make some good pellets as well - the Red Star, Blue Star and Elite go well. It's worth trying a few different brands as some will suit the rifle better and be more accurate than others. Avoid cheap brands!
@@airgunextra thanks ! I'm looking to buy a new rifle after a long lay off from the sport,so much choice ! @@daveshaw5293 Hi Dave. Plenty to choose from in that area. In addition to the BSA Ultra, check out the HW110, Reximex Ixia, Air Arms S410 and S400, FX Dreamline Classic, BSA R10 SE. Personally I'd be tempted by the FX, HW110 or R10. If you can, find a gun shop and put them in your shoulder. Good luck!
Recently picked a clx up in 177 to be my dedicated ratting tool . It's a beautifully made rifle no dought feels lovely to use nice smooth action however the claimed shot count is not correct. From a 230 fill the first 12 shots are in the 9ft range then once it sorts itself out a maximum of 10.5 using air arms diablo fields . Using bisley mags limped up to 11ft . In reality the 177 you'll get about 40 usable shots before she tails off . I'm in the process of trying to get mine looked at by my dealer. Seen a few reviews of this rifle and no one has chronied it to see what it's doing . My gut feeling is if it's looked at by a tuning Company say ratworks for example a reg put on it she'll be amazing. Point being out the box it's not really up to scratch imop. Sorted out will probably cost say £250 / £300 . I'm just really underwhelmed and disappointed for £600 this is unacceptable for me and I really wanted to love it English made and all . Unfortunately I think the guys reviewing this have their rose tinted glasses on.
@@airgunextra in the process of that now Richard. Its my first bsa so I may be expecting too much my other eng rifle is a s410carbine it's amazing for a unreged gun . Hi Richard , not sure if you could offer advice with this one , my Weihrauch Hw99 does group , but in a different area every day ! My Hw95 i previously had wouldn’t group at all causing me to part ex for a hw77 . That also doesn’t group and makes my target card look like a shotgun has hit it ( 20 metres ) . I just want a rifle that i can pick up any time of day and hit the target with . Is a pcp the answer or do they have their own issues as well , or is it me 🙁
Hi Marty. There's a whole bunch of things there! I hope the following helps: 1. Springers are more difficult to shoot consistently and accurately, requiring more technique than PCPs due to the fact there is some recoil. Basically you want to ensure that your hold on the rifle is consistent each time in terms of position, pressure of your grip - you want the rifle to recoil to the same extent each time. If you're resting on a bag or gun rest, put your lead hand on the rest and then your rifle on your hand. Don't put your rifle directly on the bag/rest. 2. Have you done any pellet testing? Try several different brands of pellets, but stick to the quality brands - JSB, Air Arms, H&N. You'll find that some work better in your rifle than others. Some pellets offer different head sizes as well. Air Arms Diabolo Field (the brand I use most often) come in 4.50, 4.51 and 4.52 for example (and same options for .22). Once you find a brand your rifle seems to like, it may be worth trying different head sizes. My Weihrauch HW77s and HW80 like 4.52 and 5.52. 3. Have you cleaned the barrel? If not, invest in a pull through kit - the Napier kit is excellent. Once you've cleaned the barrel, put a hundred or so pellets though it again to 'lead the barrel'. 4. If your rifle is grouping but in different places, it sounds to me that perhaps your hold/grip is changing between sessions, or possibly your scope is moving. Good mounts are a must, especially on a springer as they will have to deal with recoil. I user Sportsmatch. Tighten them on the rail, but don't over-tighten on the actual scope. To prevent your mounts moving under recoil you can either use an arrestor pin if your rifle has shallow holes in the top of the breach - Sportsmatch mounts come with a pin. It simply anchors the rear mount. If your rifle doesn't have a hole for the pin you can buy an arrestor block which fits behind the rear mount as a kind of buffer. 5. Set realistic targets. 20 metres is a good distance to start at with a springer. Practice until you see an improvement. Good springers like yours are capable of PCP levels of accuracy, but take a lot more practice and technique. I hope that helps. If ever you're in the Reading area on a Saturday and want to drop buy Reading Air Target Shooting club, just let me know. Good luck!
@@martybennett1861 It happens to us all Marty. It really does. Just when you think you have your set up sorted, something goes wonky. Always an explanation though and usually easily fixed. Let me know how you get on...
@@martybennett1861 Are you using .22 or .177 Marty? If you want some, send me your address on the hello@alphamilitaria.com email and I'll send you some Air Arms Diabolo Field pellets to try. They work well in just about every rifle I test.

Have you found any rust on cylinder or Barrel. The barrel and cylinder can't be removed. These problems never mentioned these issues in any reviews I've watched. Sorry to be negative mate.😃✌
Hi Daniel. There was no rust anywhere on the rifle I reviewed though I didn't have it long before it had to be returned. If there had if been I would have called it out. To be honest though, I've never had a review rifle that has had any rust on it. Some of them are new of course, but many are demo/review rifles that have been around a fair bit.
I have the limited edition .177 version of this rifle and it is everything you say it is. One of the best and most accurate airguns I have ever shot with. It's a joy to use.
On one of your other videos [CLX R-12?] you have a black dot on cardboard and the group is a lot easier to see and analyse. I gave up with those exploding targets last year. Looks impressive but nut helpful@@airgunextra

Hopefully the opportunity for another CLX will come along before too long. Great value for money rifles and a real improvement over the SE in my view. Thanks for watching.
Thanks very much. I can see why you might think that - the stock and overall look and feel are very similar to the Ultra SE, but the CLX has a new safety catch, magazine system, breech block and parts of the valving system. It also delivers 50% more shots than before.

That's a shame Reg. Have you asked Airguns of Arizona if they have any Canadian retailers? I'd love to get my hands on an HW50 as I am a big fan of Weihrauch springers. I'll add it to the list!
@@airgunextra That`s all I can ask, Thank you!
Tempting, great review Rich.
😉 I know isn't it! Thanks very much.
Terrific little rifle for hunting
No arguments here David! Thanks for watching.
I’ve managed to get an original BSA ultra. It’s my first PCP rifle. Do you people still look for these?
A great rifle Leon. One of the classics...
Another nice review 👍
Thanks very much.
Good video mate can u use different pellets in this ?
Thanks Dave. Yes, it will shoot any pellets, assuming of course its the right calibre. I've always found Air Arms Diabolo Field, JSB and H&N pellets to work best. BSA make some good pellets as well - the Red Star, Blue Star and Elite go well. It's worth trying a few different brands as some will suit the rifle better and be more accurate than others. Avoid cheap brands!
@@airgunextra thanks ! I'm looking to buy a new rifle after a long lay off from the sport,so much choice ! What would u recommend I previously had an old wierach 22rifle ,I like power ,compactness and preferably quietness??l also have used a 22 bsa rifle which I liked .this bsa ultra does look tasty though ,
@@daveshaw5293 What sort of budget are you looking at Dave? Don't forget to budget for a scope as well!
@@airgunextra scope defo yes around 600 - grand
I'd suggest sending it back to your RFD and asking them to have it fixed under warranty.
@@airgunextra in the process of that now Richard. Its my first bsa so I may be expecting too much my other eng rifle is a s410carbine it's amazing for a unreged gun . Hate dogging on any rifle but should be better quality control for the kind of money their asking . Hopefully my rfd gets it sorted .
@@Murrayefc1978 Should of bought an S510 to go with your 410 mate...Air Arms wipe the floor with BSA, buy from a company that sells rifles that don't need you to shell out more than the rrp to do what a new rifle should.Good luck with your "fixed" new gun.😉👍
I hope they have improved the trigger, on my ultra se witch was bought by me new a year ago was crap , now sold for that reason, 😁👍
Hi Phillip - yes a big improvement. It might be time to get the wallet out again!
@@airgunextra you are joking the mrs whoud kill me ,ive only just bought the zbroia hortensia, 😂😂👍
@@phillipsharpe6459 😂 that's not a bad call at all! Enjoy your rifle.
I hope the following helps:
Good luck!
@@airgunextra thankyou Richard for the well thought out reply and taking time out . I think you could probably tell i was a bit down
@@martybennett1861 It happens to us all Marty.
Hmmmm, I like this gun but my budget is tight, very tight. As you know I'm a fan of the GX40. On my budget I think the advantages of the CLX are desirable but not a necessity? ATB MMMD
This is my Crimbo gift to myself.
Gotta treat yourself Daniel!
I have the limited edition .177 version of this rifle and it is everything you say it is. One of the best and most accurate airguns I have ever shot with. It's a joy to use.
I'm jealous David! Thanks for watching.
BSA has always been well designed, reliable and conservative. This model seems to be no exception.
A pity that there's no regulator.
Altaros do a regulator for it
I've got a BSA ultra I use it for the rats this rifle I'd very accurate and you cant go wrong for the price .
No argument here Wayne!
If only they made a left handed version of the rifle... I would love one of these but it seems BSA have now totally forsaken the L/H PCP shooter :(
Would of been better just shooting at the box with a dot. See how it groups properly. Splatter targets give false accuracy
Buenas es regulado ??? 🙏
Hi. No, no regulator I'm afraid.
Nice rifle but cost cutting not supplying a mod
I really like my R10, and I do like the BSA guns but to be perfectly honest that looked like a 25mm group @ 30 m. Not great TBH.
I'm sure you could do better,
Difficult to see group with exploding targets
Try looking at the holes.
On one of your other videos [CLX R-12?] you have a black dot on cardboard and the group is a lot easier to see and analyse. I gave up with those exploding targets last year. Looks impressive but nut helpful@@airgunextra
Nice review. 👍
Dare I say that you’re appearing more comfortable on camera!
It’s like your talking to a pal.
I’m kicking myself.
I had the opportunity of having one a few weeks back but I uhmed and ahhed for too long. Gone.
☹️
Thanks very much Bionic. I really appreciate that. It still feels a bit weird talking to myself in a field and I've had a few odd looks from a farm worker here and there! Hopefully the opportunity for another CLX will come along before too long. Great value for money rifles and a real improvement over the SE in my view. Thanks for watching.
Thus is a nice rifle, I don't have one I know how it works because I make it.
Hi Brian. So do I understand you work for BSA? Any additional info you can share on the CLX?
👍
A nice looking rifle but 60 shots in .177 means a top up every 5 magazines..I'd soon tire of that down on the range.
Plenty for hunting though! Thanks for watching.
👍😎
It's ok but would take an AA s200 for the same or less money, if they still did them 😐
Nice little air rifle but wasn't as good as my HW100ktFsb
How much was that?
Nothing new at all, old hat technology bsa need to pull there socks up,
Good vid.
Thanks very much. I can see why you might think that - the stock and overall look and feel are very similar to the Ultra SE, but the CLX has a new safety catch, magazine system, breech block and parts of the valving system. It also delivers 50% more shots than before.
this rifle has issues. Was my next choice until i found out ...
Are you basing that on forum chat? I know plenty of owners who've had no issues. Great rifle...

guess what? this has nothing to do with shooting air rifles, only shooting video's!,, but just to let you know that, that furry cover you put over the video microphone to cut down the wind noise is some time's called a,, ""willy warmer!"", and it's a very handy thing to have if you're out shooting in the wind and the cold, cold is the bummer especially at my age (71!),, snigger snigger!
They told me it was called a 'dead cat' and the smaller one was a 'dead kitten' !
