  • A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Lord's Day morning 9th September 1860
Spurgeon here deals with a very insightful Bible text. However much we see David as the courageous hero of the Old Testament, he was still a man. He could feel weak as he considered trying to govern members of his own family. His sister, Zeruiah, had sons who served as leaders in David's army: Abishai, Joab and Asahel. They were almost ungovernable, and could resort to murder when it suited them.
Many of us can identify with such feebleness, when it comes to influencing those with strong personalities. It was ultimately God who overcame the sons of Zeruiah in His own time.
Spurgeon felt free, it seems, towards the end of this sermon, to deal with the subject of the Final Perseverance of the saints. It is a great and important doctrine, but not so easy to see it naturally emerging from the text. Probably there were good pastoral reasons for venturing into that subject as the sermon drew to a close.

The sermon title's scripture reference here is incorrect. It should be 2 Samuel 3:39. This is a powerful sermon, about how weak we are, though strong in Christ, as long as we recognize our weakness without him. Closes with excellent discussion of final perseverance.
