Shooting Quietly Without A Silencer? Inconceivable? Nope...

- The Bloke demonstrates how to shoot quietly for indoor training (or hunting for those of that bent) with a long-barrelled .22 rimfire. Specifically, his Lee-Enfield No.7. Without a silencer / moderator.
Standard velocity .22 rf is already pretty quiet, and needs no hearing protection outdoors out of the 25+ inches of barrel. RWS Z Lang, so-called "Zimmerpatronen", which recreate the old .22 Long ballistics with smokeless powder and a 29gn bullet are even more so, and 6mm Flobert / .22 BB caps make hardly any noise at all.
The accuracy and the point of impact is not so different for the standard .22's and the Z Langs at 50m, but the 6mm Floberts have distinctly run out of legs by that point.
An in a future video, we'll be showing you how to do it with careful handloading of cast bullets and with published load data!!!

For a second I didn't realise it had sped up, and thought the bloke had just activated 'brit mode'
They were a pretty feared army for awhile.
Until.. they lost almost all of their territories.
I wouldn't say lost, the only time they lost was colonies. The rest was given independence.
that is, until they adopted the L85
I thank God we are no longer a part of Britain! Here most of us are not subjects, well in New Hampshire we aren't.
3ducs Hello my only neighboring state.
Those tiny little bullet thingies are so cute!!!
I bet they grow up to be .30 cal.
They are also available in 9mm ball and pointy pellet
Hah those tiny bullet things omg that killed me
"they take so long to get there". It's about the journey not the destination!
I shoot Floberts in my backyard. They are more quiet than my pellet gun, and they do a number on tin cans. Neighbors don't even know I'm shooting.
Arie Heath cool
Quieter than a pellet gun? So would these work for hunting pest animals?
@@Rose_Butterfly98 the brand I tried were specifically for squirrels. I think they were mostly primer, but they still managed to cycle with a semi auto.
@America Well, guns are completely illegal here so I'll never get to do that. But that's what I meant by pest control. Chipmunks and sparrows mainly. One digs up the ground and the other steals other birds' nests after killing them
@@Rose_Butterfly98 where do you live then
I'd almost be scared the tiny ones wouldn't come out the barrel
Sane
Ha ha. It's hard enough to get them in the barrel in the first place!
You say that but they can generally penetrate a human skull. They are no joke.
Good news is they generate so little pressure that I'd wouldn't hurt anything
r slover They can penetrate a skull you idiot. I think you could win a Darwin Award in the future.
Flobert sounds like the action was louder than the report.
Now I know what the strange little casings I find on the 100m range sometimes are, now I just need to figure out why anyone would try shooting 6mm Flobert at a 100m range.
impossible to hit at 100meters, its already hard on 25meters to be accurate, maybe you can hit it on 100meters but by pure luck and calculating some fysics :)
The drop of a .22BB at 100m is about the same as the drop of .223 at 400m. It's not nothing but it's not a crazy amount.
Very cool! Now I wish we had tried to shoot the Floberts further than 9 yards!
Oh I'm still enjoying the channel, I've been telling people I know here in the states to really check out you channel .
Thanks again, really enjoy watching your channel every morning when I get up around 4:30 am.
correction : your channel
I remember shooting cb caps as a kid .They were fairly accurate and definitely quiet.
BB Cap's are/ were cool too. I found a box when going through some old stuff at an estate sale. All you hear is the click of the hammer.
Never knew you could shoot 6mm flobert out of a 22 rifle. Love the Enfield trainer.
Watching you fire such tiny cartridges out of a fullsized rifle is almost farcical.
UK gun laws
Josh Range or not.
Yes, UK gun laws are well known for being restrictive. This may be one reason why our Bloke lives and shoots in Switzerland.
But that's such a hassle
Alistair buy yes
I love the CCI Quiet .22 ammo out of my 20" barreled Stevens. Sounds like an air rifle or hardware stapler rather than a .22. And the 40 grain bullet at ~700 fps will kill cleanly any small game I'm in range to hit.
When i shoot Z'eds out of my SAKO the loudest thing is the firing pin moving forward!
I have a 27 inch barreled Stevens bolt action single shot made in the late 1920s. With regular .22 Shorts, there is no need for hearing protection at all. Great fun. With Mini Mags, it's a rabbit and squirrel killer for sure.
6mm Flobert is soo underrated.
Did some shooting in Uni with Lee Enfield trainers, .22 indoors, no recoil, basically no noise, lots of fun.
I gotta say, it's kind of refreshing to see a British fellow shooting. For some reason you guys tend to make things seem more legit. Lol. Good video bud keep it up
Greetings... Here in the U.S. we have .22 long rifle C.B. caps., and they are rated at 710 Feet per second.and yes, very quiet. They are actually very effective for pest control, and even rabbits out to approx 20 yards plus if you are shooting up in a tree at a starling pest bird the bullets dont go far at all. Pretty safe in the country where there is lots of room ... Ballistically they are about the same as a average air rifle.
Damn Bradda. You have some serious muscle memory there on that action.
That rifle is amazing! I want one.
Love the rifle. Good show.
Liked this video. Love quiet ammo. And no recoil.
Do you think you could ever do a video on British use of Cordite the stuff that looks like uncooked spaghetti.
Use to shoot CB and BB caps in an apartment on a 30 ft range. Set up thick hardwood boards and plywood as a back up.
taught myself practical ballistics and sighting it!
Dude, your German pronunciation is perfect!
I assume it's because he lives in Switzerland.
Well, that explains it...
I shot in a youth competition for .22 rifle. Got a Savage MKII and shot groups with different ammo to find the best fit for the gun. Turns out that it won't shoot supersonic ammo that well, but subsonics shoot pretty decently. It is so nice to shoot due to the quietness of the subsonic rounds. I managed to get some shots a while back at 210 yards. Had to aim about 10 feet over and took a few seconds for the bullet to get there. The light was just right so you could see the bullet arc and hit the target. Great fun.
I shoot exclusively 22lr subsonics at home. I have a place that would be safe for high powered rifles, but noise is an issue. They function well in my 10/22 but only about 70% feed in my mk4 target. Bolt actions are fine of course.
The 6 mm filbert was made to be used as a parlor gun to entertain company with their shooting prowess inside their mansion
thanks for the video! other alternatives are CCI CB and CCI Quiets. not saying they're better but they are available where I live
I used No.7 s in Air Cadets as a kid. They were great training because you learned to manage a full size rifle with cheap anmo. The cadet program uses air rifles now.
CowboyX1000 no it doesnt. i used a number 8, which is 22lr.
Alistair Shaw Sorry I generalized a bit. We used No.7 s in th 80's in my Air Cadet Sqn. The we switched to Anschut's (probably misspelled ). These days many, but not all, of the Cadet organizations in small towns have had to switch to air rifles. There are still many Squadrons in larger centers that have access to an approved range for .22 cal. Also I had understood that any of those old No.7s that DND got back had been destroyed. I hope not.
first gun i shot was a .22 loaded subsonic and it was quiet enough for me not to need ears
Interesting to see how the short-cased Floberts were failing to obturate. No doubt that was one contribution to poor accuracy.
Aguila in Mexico makes a Flobert cap using a tiny bullet but using a .22LR case. It's called the Colibri and the slightly hotter Super Colibri. Out of a 16 in barreled rifle the Super Colibri bullet has enough energy at 15-25 yards to pierce the front side of a 2liter plastic Coca Cola bottle, but not enough to exit. Allows you to easily police your spent bullets if you are a good shot; just throw away the bottle.
Question: What is the significance of the green tag hanging from the front sling swivel?
Norman just guessing, but it could be borrowed from an antique show or collector perhaps. could totally be wrong
I use the Aguila Colibri in my SW 17-3.
I use Winchester Z 22LR. They sound like a cap gun going off. They're great for shooting bunnies up to 30m.
The big advantage is that they don't scare the other bunnies off, so you can bag 3 or 4 sitting together
"Hey Fred, why are you lying down on the job? Oh, s**t, I just got hit"
Those small rounds are a litteral pea...pea shooter!! XD
I just learned that the little ones used to be used in bars so you could shoot and drink. Like darts today!
ImConfusedTwo Indeed they there. Most commonly in Flobert parlour pistols and rifles. Prior to that muzzleloading percussion systems were used also with just a percussion cap and tiny ball.
I love this guy
Same idea applies to everything, if you don't go super sonic, and use small charges of fast burning powders, combined with a longer barrel. Subsonics loaded like that are a lot of fun, and they're still good for short range hunting. Good 150 yard deer load is 9x19mm, loaded with 3.3gr of Red Dot, with 158gr lead swc, out of a 25" barrel. Muzzle pressures are around 400psi, sounds like an air rifle.
In the US, possibly available elsewhere, CCI makes what are essentially floberts with a long case. CB Longs they are called. Useful for box magazine fed files.
thats a nice rifle
Aguila out of Mexico makes Colibri and Super-Colibri .22lr ammo that are primer fired with a heavier charge of primer compound on the case floor than normal, giving it around 350 and 550 fps respectively with tiny 20 grain bullets. When fired out of anything with a carbine or rifle length barrel the only sounds are the click of the action firing and the 'thunk' of the little bullet hitting the backstop.
I finally met somebody who makes gun noises like I do
I had a Remington brand "cb" bullet lodge 1/4" from the muzzle in my m10/22 barrel. Later the company issued a recall. Just something to be aware of.
So jealous anytime I see someone with the no7 the 22 rimfire I dream about.
My cousin had some .22s for squirrels that I think were mostly primer powder. We Dutch loaded them with regular ammo into a semi auto rifle. You could really hear the "POP, psh, POP, psh, POP!"
If you put it through a surpressor, loading it would be louder, but they still managed to cycle.
a bolt action .22 lr. is a blast in the back yard with short or bb(cb caps here in the states) caps. the neighbors never notice.
Thank you ,sir ,for another great video. May I ask you where you acquired your jacket?
Fond memories of my time as an Air Cadet firing those little .22 from the modified LE. I still really miss that. Does the one you are using have a ring fore-sight?
Sooo, what if you suppressed the tiny ones?
The flobert.
Like how quiet could you get
I love shooting standard velocity CCI's at my steel targets from about 200yds in my back yard. It's quiet enough that I can laugh at how long it takes for them to get there and quietly ring them lol
I was wondering if those 6mm things actually managed to exit the barrel, there being so little powder/primer/propellant in the "cartridge"! Almost thought you'd had a misfire on the first of those you fired!
Oh my ears, they bleed. Lol
I used to do a lot of shooting at home with .22 Aguila Colibri ammunition. It made a bit more noise than this, but none of my neighbors (such as in the other half of our duplex) ever noticed.
The thumbnail suggested parlor loads.
CCI quiet is a good less loud .22lr cartridge with the same length as a regular .22lr so it feeds in a magazine.
CCI sells .22 S,L, and LR in loads at 710 fps, all are pretty quiet and don't require hearing protection, at least in rifles.
It was interesting to see the gas fly up from the breech with the Flobert rounds. Perhaps if the case sealed the accuracy would have been better.
I've never fired BB Caps but I've fired CB Caps out of a Rhom revolver with a 4" barrel.I found that they fouled the gun quite badly.power wise slightly more penetration in wood than my Gecado 27 .177 air rifle which I'm guessing produced something like 650 FPS so fairly anemic compared to a modern air rifle.
Put a diy can on the muzzle and “what did I just not hear?” .22 long rifle cartridge fades into the background noise.
22 short std vel out of a CZ 452 (25" barrel) is pretty mild too, and they feed fine out of the magazine, except the last round.
I would imagine it being very easy to get a squib round with those
A recent comment for an old video: I only use such rounds for killing pests like grey squirrels and only those with full length profile similar to standard .22 LR. For me that is CCI quiet ammo. I particularly like the segmented copper wash ammo that breaks into three pieces. Velocity is about 700 feet per second and noise is advertised at 80 DB, but I think it is a little louder. Noise is about like a pellet gun. I use a 24 inch barrel.
For indoor shooting in a rifle standard velocity only needs ear plugs at most and is more accurate than I am. the BB caps and CB caps in my experience are not accurate enough.
When I was a cadet, we had the No. 8 rifle, firing .22 rounds. Even on the indoor range at the local T.A barracks they made next to no noise whatsoever... Yet, due to good old "'elf and safety" we all had to wear hearing protection, or wait outside because there weren't enough pairs to go around.
I bought the Aguila Super Colibri for my grandson's Cricket. We're able to shoot on my backyard pellet gun range using pellet gun targets. His Cricket is not as loud as my 22 cal. air guns.
You know where people sell ammunition. . . ? ? ? ?
I need ammunition again.
Is it just me or was the front sight moving when he fired? I only noticed this because I wanted to see if maybe I could see the bullet flying, like he could
would be interesting to compare noise level of dry firing the action(using a snap cap to protect firing pin/chamber ), maybe the BB is no louder than that?
Anyone know how the Zimmerpatronen compare to the CCI Quiet rounds?
where can I get these .22 flobert rounds??? My father used to shoot these back in the day with his friends but I cant manage to find them anywhere, btw i live in austria.
An Enfield with a .22 barrel? Didn't know they made those
The soviets had several weapons & bullets that fired with little noise.
How do the Swiss feel about silencers/suppressors?
CCI makes those tiny ones and call them CB's I believe. I guess they were originally meant for shooting galleries in carnivals over this end of the pond. Kind of hard to find these days as most carnivals dont like using them anymore and instead use pellet rifles. But you still see a few in new england use them. I used to shoot those in an old winchester model 60A. Just something fun to shoot for shits and giggles.
How can you get that smole rounds in s lee enfield
Wow this guy speaks some pretty good German
Aguilla make's some .22 rounds that are silent out of a rifle can't remember the name, but they have a bird on theshots.
rimer fired ( no powder) but I have seen rabbit & Pheasant taken with head shot's... Love the SMLE trainer, that long bbl has got to be Very Accurate.
Your BBcaps are twice as loud as they should be--put a silencer on the firing pin, it's so loud when it strikes!!
I have to say the Lee Enfield No 7 is a good looking rifle. Could you make a video on the history of the Lee Enfields all the way through the development. I dont see many good videos about it on UA-cam
Bloke on the Range being British myself i feel you could do it justice. i do like the swiss rifles that you shoot
Bloke on the Range Ah, I'd been meaning to ask if you were in contact with Othais, I suspect a mutually beneficial conversation could be had.
Just need to get together with Ian from the Forgotten Weapons channel.
Is the recoil manageable?
Aren't those tiny things also referred to as plinkers because they were used for indoor shooting galleries?
Yes
People in the countryside would also use them for hunting squirrels back when the skins were worth something. A headshot at short range will kill and you get a nice intact skin. My old dad (born in the 40s) used to call them "penny shots" for being the smallest and cheapest possible.
How good at capturing the sound are your mics? The way it sounds on this video (at least through my speakers) is that the gunshots are substantially quieter than your speaking voice, the traffic on the road, and the sound of the action moving.
7-10gr of Trailboss+32acp pistol pills+303=FUN ;) I think my 90gr wadcutter loads run about 30c for all components with bugger all wear on the brass. Ive not tested above 25m yet but they group about 1" at that and should hold out ok to at least 50m.Got some 90gr jacketed hollowpoints to load as well, just haven't got around to it yet.
I found the RWS Zimmer to be quit loud. I use CCi quiet .22lr, much quieter as Zimmer.
Where do you buy these
what if you out a silencer on it while shooting how quiet would it be?
Very Nice! Love the rifle! And you actually spelled the word "Zimmerpatrone" like a german would, do you have german roots? Anyways, good shooting and you earned yourself another subscriber ;)
Can you guys get the Aguila SSS over there? Out of a bolt-action with a long enough barrel, they're REAL quiet.
how easy are those mk7s to come by?
If you can find an old Winchester bolt action .22 rifle buy it, from around 1927 time period is best. It might have a little bit of rust on it but as long as the inside of the barrel is clean you should be ok. Also you can usually get one for around 100.00 USD. You can also look for a Springfield .22 as well. These rifles will generally have extra long barrels on them and makes them long distance and quiet.
Edward D I have a couple of Winchester Cooeys, single shot bolt action .22 Awesome little gun. Used to shoot floberts( we called them BB caps) in the basement, great fun.
Now try shooting a .50 BMG without hearing protection.
Been there done that wanna see the T shirt i got for it? I'm sorry i could could not hear you over the sound of all that freedom we dispensed in the desert. Or maybe I'm just deaf not sure anyway worth it regardless.
Makes me think of the bit from "Good Morning Vietnam"
00:15:49 We're talking out in the field today. Hi, what's your name? "My name's Bob Fliber!"
00:15:53 Bob, what do you do? "I'm in artillery!" Thank you, Bob.
00:15:56 Can we play anything for you? "Anything! Just play it loud! Okay?"
Your Favorite Sheepdog but he does when he's using higher calibers
Use it like a blowgun. Should be quiet enough.
Just use the primer and shoot a spitball.
They make those Floberts in 7.62X54R XD
Wow those little are cool! I use colibri rounds made by Aquila all the time. It's a 22r length cartridge that only uses a eley primer and a 20grain lead projectile. They move at 400fps and are absolutely silent. I use them to kill rats very often
Are these rounds able to penetrate skin?
what no 22 short?
GunJesus said he puts earplugs in even when shooting .22 i would too indoors, but outside it should be fine
I wish that Bloke would redo this video but this time around all a subsonic round and a .22 short round and shoot at a more reasonable distance such as 25 metres... maybe add a penetration test. I feel that, that is the distance of most indoor ranges and most engagement with small pests.
The standard .22lr there is subsonic too.
The crack of the Zimmerpatronen is probably the same if not quieter than the noise the rounds would make if you just dumped them onto the floor.
It's deceptive on video, but they are louder than that.
22lr is very bad for your ears because of the supersonic speed it reaches. you should wear hearing protection with it. I'm not sure about those other two. probaly the other full sized cartridge.
I guess there just need sto be some adjustments in the aim. Going a bit higher would atleast counter the drop.
um... I have like 8 boxes? of it.. of the flobert ones
