Singer Heavy Dutry 4432 Sewing Real 3 oz Leather

  • Please read all of this before posting any questions. I may have already answered your question here.
    This was originally a video response to Christopher Nejman video showing how his top of the line Baby Lock Ellisimo sews leather before UA-cam took away video responses.
    Sewing leather at home does NOT require a sewing machine that cost 5 to 8 thousand dollars!
    Please note that this machine will NOT handle Nylon V69 thread. This is a critical component when sewing leather. This demo was simple to show the power of the machine. Therefore, even though it has the power to sew it with polyester thread as show in this video, it will not handle the required tension and V69 bonded nylon thread that is required. Please keep this in mind when viewing this video.
    Here I show you how even the low cost Singer 4432 can sew 4 layers of (3 oz) real leather successfully. It also sews through faux leather with ease - since real leather is more dense and requires nylon thread. The key is using a leather needle. Here I use a size 18 Schmetz Leather Needle.
    I am not being paid by Singer in any way. And I did pay for the machine I am showing in this video.
    The point is if you want to sew thinner weight fake (faux) and/or real leather then you don't need to spend anymore than a few hundred dollars to do so. Be aware that depending on the machine you chose and various other factors (like sewing 50+ leather bags a year) might shorten the life of your machine. If you plan on sewing leather daily then please consider an industrial machine.
    If you want a machine that has a camera and automatically sews a straight line without you holding the fabric; can sew leather and you can afford the $8K to $12K price, then you'll want to look at the top of the line machines. BTW, they are amazing and worth every penny if you can afford one. :)
    Please note that no home machine is designed for sewing leather on a regular basis. For that you need a industrial machine where the motor is measured in HP not Amps and is all metal inside.

    Love this machine. Making handbags with it. Figured out how to center the needle which had been thrown out of kilter when I moved the machine and accidentally hit the side of a table. Just inherited a Kenmore 158.17520 or Model 1720. Getting it cleaned & oiled as my back up! Your videos are very informative & much appreciated.

    I just got this machine over the weekend and sewed my first project tonight. I like to make warm, absorbent items for guinea pigs. I use fleece, fiberfill, and an absorbent layer so when I make these, it can get pretty thick, especially when joining all these layers together. The folded seams can be every bit as challenging as denim. It took me 20 min. to make a pocket cozy. Because the process was hassel hassle free, I made two of them! On my old Brother, it would have taken me 2 hours or more to make just one. It was a crap machine from the day I bought it brand new. When the time came to replace it, I refused to even look or consider that brand.
    I'm very satisfied with this singer!
    It's already more than doubled my efficiency. I've never worked with a high end machine, but THIS machine has outshone any machine I've ever used and I've used more than 50. I have tasted an automatic bobbin threader and those are nice! But for now, i am more than satisfied.

      I've heard lots of reports that this machine struggles to support V69 bonded nylon thread, which is a requirement for sewing leather. I would look at one of the Sailrite style machines that you can pick up for around $300 to $500 depending on their options. These machine are all metal and have a larger motor installed and support industrial style leather needles.

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  6 років тому +1

      It depends on the how thick and dense the leather is. Generally, you need a leather needle as it has a sharp tip. However, a quick test will let you know if it will work. Use either a walking foot or a teflon foot. Make sure the teflon is good quality and not plastic.

      @kevinsews  6 років тому

      The only model that I am aware of that doesn't have the threader is the 4411. Also, when using very thick thread you shouldn't use it as it will bend the very small wire that goes through the needle.

      You need a larger needle. Either a size 16 or 18. Maybe a larger top stitching needle will help. The larger the thread the higher the tension. This can mean increasing the bobbin tension as well. I would buy a 2nd bobbin and use it to adjust for heavy thread. That way you can keep the bobbin that come with your machine for normal threads.

      Hi Kevin...I own the 4423 as well. Since I haven't spent my life (sometimes men intrinsically understand them) examining motors, I didn't realize that each sewing task I set out to do would relate to WHICH sewing machine I should use. The Singer 4423 was rated for leather, etc. That's just not true. One can do some light work here and there with the right needle and walking foot but beyond that, the motor becomes worn, like all moving parts do when overused. My Emerald Husqvarna has more power, but it still broke down after having used it on a heavy upholstery job. I got the Sailrite LS-1 Basic yesterday for my heavier work. We shall see how it goes.

    Hi,
    I just recieved my Singer 4423 and want to stitch leather fabric. I tried to setup with a 0.55 mm Polyester thread using a Schmetz size 19 needle, unfortunately for me it does not work. The thread gets tangled and I believe is too thick for this machine. I switched to a very thin thread and it worked fine, but I'm looking for a thicker thread for my projects. What thread diameter size can this machine handle to stitch leather? Reading the comments Bonded Nylonv69 is the go to, but from reading your answers this machine cant handle it. What thread and thread thickness did you use in this video, your stitches have the size I'm looking for.

    What do you have your #69 on...the picture doesn't show? Before seeing this video, and having sewn back in the 70's with #69, and deciding to take sewing up again with light leather and Sunbrella, I purchased a 4411 but saw that it had a horizontal spool and there is no nylon #69 on small spools, I then called up singer and talked to a rep who obviously did'nt sew heavy stuff. She told me to put the cone on the auxiliary spindle, which I knew was wrong. She then said if I was going to sew with heavy thread, then use a lighter thread for the bobbin otherwise bad things could happen. But the singer manual says not to do this. I haven't received my machine yet, but should the #69 work for both top and bobbin?

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  6 років тому +1

      I use an external thread stand because my spools of thread are for my industrial machines. I have used #69 in the bobbin, but I have to tighten the bobbin tension. I have the expertise to do this, but Singer thinks the home sewers will screw things up so they don't want you messing with the bobbin tension. This prevents support calls to them. You will find yellow paint on the bobbin screw that the factory placed on it to keep it from being changed. If I were you I would order and extra spool holder for heavy duty threads. That way when you go back to normal weight thread you can simply place the factory provided spool back into the machine. This will ensure you have proper tension without messing with the one you've used for heavier threads.

    • @apostolicbible1
      @apostolicbible1 6 років тому

      I'm sort of confused...does the spool holder refer to part of a bobbin, or are you referring to a spool stand where you put a cone spool on with a vertical metal rod which sticks up for the spool thread to go through?

    I see that you have the same problem as I have in my singer tradition. I'm speaking about the difficulty of controlling the speed of the first stitches. I can hear a buzz, it seems that the machine doesn't have enough power to start so I have to press the pedal more, and then it starts stitching but too fast. In this moment I can regulate the speed by releasing the pedal a bit, but I'm not able to start stitching at low speed. Anyone has a solution to this?

    • @kevinsews
      @kevinsews  6 років тому

      Nothing you can do about it. It is just the nature of the motor and the very low cost of this machine. You will need to look at an industrial machine to perform as you describe. With them you can even change out the flywheel in order to slow it down and add more power. If there is a domestic machine that can do this maybe somebody else will chime in and let us know.

    • @geraldinelombardo7897

      blackrabbot when you first start try turning the hand wheel toward you just to get you started. I dont have this particular Singer model. Im looking into a heavy duty and this one caught my eye. I have an 'expensive' machine that, no matter what im sewing, those first initial stitches, the machine takes off too! When taking it for service I've mentioned this and was told its the nature of the machine. My point is the 'cost' of a machine has nothing to do this the speed at which is sews when you first start out. Singer has been around for many years. I think im going back to the tried and true (Singer) when it comes time to replace. With a heavy duty you have the choice of any type of fabric. With a regular machine, no matter the cost, if you force heavy thich layers, the machine will labor. Dont forget to use a leather needle or the appropriate needle for the fabric you're sewing. Enjoy your project!

      @peggy67ful 6 років тому +1

      I love my SingerHD4423. Does everything I need for light to medium fabrics and even a one-step buttonhole. The Sailrite Ultrafeed would work better for leather use. Its really just a straight stitch portable fabricating or repairing tool for leather, canvas, strap and of course all things marine related. Its more money but really the way to go when working with leather. I don't actually love mine but I'll keep it when I need a hound dog to chew some leather. Other than that...meh. The Singer HD is being taxed as you move it along over the four layers of leather. The hum and the "punch" are the machine working hard. Couldn't do that for many hours at a time...might have some breakdown and that should be mentioned . Again...the best part of having the Singer 4423 is its price. So replacing it wont break the bank.

      I make this video over 5 years ago. I recall tightening the bobbin tension by 1/2 a turn to the right; the needle thread tension was around 7.

      I've had good luck with this series of the Singer machines. I use them to teach. So far they have been great for that. Plus, they are powerful enough to handle heavier fabrics. I wouldn't buy one to sew leather on though. This video was created simple to show the power of this machine. If I tried to use it sewing leather like this daily it wouldn't last long.

    Hi Kevin, thanks for the video. I was wondering about the thread. I would like to know what is the thickest I can go when trying to sew leather. I just purchased the leather needles after your recommendation. Thanks.

      Nick Hernandez Leather requires a bonded nylon thread. I’ve made it work on my machine, but I’ve heard from others that could never make it work on their machine.

      Kevin Sews thanks! I’ve been looking for videos to see if people experiment with threads, but it’s rare. Do you place the spool in any special way?

      Nick Hernandez You’re welcome! Nothing special. Sometimes it works and other times you have to mess with it to get it to work.
