I do a demonstration on the Janome machine which is an intermedia range. Video is divided into chapters where you can easily find information about a particular fool attachment you interested in. So there is no need to watch all video each time. Just jump to the part you want to watch again.

    Good video. I have a small portable industrial walking foot machine that does well with leather. However my domestic machine is an old Kenmore that mom purchased 42 years ago will sew leather as thick as what you were doing here with great ease. I would not be scared to put it up against any new domestic machine now for its ability to sew anything. It is a fantastic old machine. They were built strong and built to last many years.

    • @kasiasleatherschool
      @kasiasleatherschool  2 роки тому +2

      Yes old sewing machines were much stronger then now.I myself use industrial walking foot as I sewing a lot of different thickness leathers and challenging designs for my Designer clients so obviously I am not using domestic.
      But for little projects some of the domestic are fine.
      Thanks for your comment.
      Good luck with your projects.

      I must advise you not to sew upholstery leather on a domestic machine( only if your manual for your machine says so) it will destroy your machine and leather. Home sewing machines can only take up soft lightweight leather for little projects. I would advise using a heavy-duty walking foot machine.
      In the rest of my videos, I use a professional industrial walking foot machine.

    Did you know you can put clear tape on bottom of foot, cutting away excess, and it will glide across leather?

      Happy to help.
      No I didn't know about the tape, as I am professional and for all my work I use walking foot industrial machine. It sounds like interesting tip ,but from my experience I don't think, it would work with every leather type, or thickness, or every type of home machine. Some home machines are really delicate.

    • @kasiasleatherschool
      @kasiasleatherschool  3 місяці тому +2

      It depends strongly on the brand and strength of the machine .
      This particular Janome won't take anything heavier than soft napa.
      Old Bernina probably could do it.
      To be honest, house machines are good for lightweight leather and small projects .
      For thick and rigid leather, it is better to use a professional/individual walking foot machine.
      That is what I am using on the rest of my videos.

    Is this walking foot a high shank one? If so, can you tell me where to find one? Perhaps on Amazon. My machine is an older Kenmore and I need a walking foot that is the high shank design. I am trying to add a pouch pocket with flap onto an existing pair of motorcycle riding chaps made with the thin Napa like leather.

    • @kasiasleatherschool
      @kasiasleatherschool  2 роки тому +1

      This walking foot is universal brand. Not really sure if is low or high shank as I have not seen any other.
      Also I don't know your brand, I'm in UK. Sorry I couldn't help.

    • @kasiasleatherschool
      @kasiasleatherschool  8 місяців тому +2

      Make sure your tension screw on bobbin case is tight enough. Also, thicker thread could help.

    I'm aiming to achieve a clean, consistent stitch with visible spacing, similar to the iconic stitching on Hermes bags. I'm torn between purchasing an industrial walking foot machine or a heavy-duty domestic sewing machine with a walking foot attachment. IS there a big difference in quality please?

    • @kasiasleatherschool
      @kasiasleatherschool  4 місяці тому +3

      Hi. It depends if you will sew on a regular basis. It's worth investing in an industrial walking foot machine (all my other videos I use industrial).
      For bag making, I would suggest a free arm leather machine.
      If you are just playing with ideas, then heavy-duty domestic will do the job depending on the thickness of leather .
      I must say that my experience and expertise are in leather garment construction, not in bag making, and that are two different fields of working with leather.

      I don't know if I understand your question right.
      If you asking what you can make from nappa ,then I would say is the best for any garment: jackets,skirts,trousers, coats,shirts....

    what type or brand of sewing machine would you recommend to use with leather.

    • @kasiasleatherschool
      @kasiasleatherschool  2 роки тому +4

      I know for fact that Bernina is good as it is only home/domestic machine which has metal parts inside which makes it stronger machine. I have seen add of new Juki(Very Expensive) that it takes leather too.
      I would highly advise not to use to thick leathers as that will damage machine. For serious work with leather I would recommend Industrial/commercial walking foot machine. You can see that I show rest of my tutorials on my walking foot.

  • @mjp5129

    Can you adjust the pressure foot tension? I had to do that, sewing a heavy vinyl. Also, I have been told to never backstitch leather….to tie it off by hand?

    • @kasiasleatherschool
      @kasiasleatherschool  Рік тому +4

      If your machine have the pressure foot function then of course yes. My is very basic on this video, so it doesn't have it.
      About back stitching leather... It depends, if its in the end of the seam which will be visible then I would knot it, but when if it will be catch in next seam then I backstitch. I'm sewing leather garments for Ower 30 years and I never had problems with reinforce seams. I think What you referring to, is shoes and bags sewing and here definitely can't back stitch.
      Hope that helps.

    • @kasiasleatherschool
      @kasiasleatherschool  6 місяців тому

      You need to try. All home /domestic machines are very delicate and often not strong enough for leather big projects. A lot also depends on leather thickness and how soft it is.

  • @scottmorrell148
    @scottmorrell148 2 роки тому

    DO NOT use your home/ domestic machine to sew leather YOU WILL KILL IT.

    • @kasiasleatherschool
      @kasiasleatherschool  2 роки тому +17

      I agree and disagree with this statement. If you watched all video ,you would see tricks and tips how to sew and what leather is safe to use. In my demonstration I used soft lamb Napa leather, not thick as you use in your projects. Thicker leather I would also sew on walking foot industrial/commercial sewing machine, as rest of my tutorials shows. Also it depends a lot on the make and range of the home machine. For example Bernina is one of the strongest domestic machines ,the older then better and takes up to medium thick leathers. Thank you for your comment as this will highlight to people to be considered while sewing leather on home/domestic machines.
      All the best Kasia
