thanks for this. great video. wanted to mention there is an adjustable potentiometer(adjusted with a small flathead screwdriver) in the singer foot pedal. its right beside "VR2" on the main board. at 12:18 the manual feed handle you made on the singer machine is genius
Thank you for this video. The info here answered a lot of the questions I had about the Singer heavy duty and the difference between the Singer and the much bigger industrial machines. Thank you.
Great info, thank you for making this video! I have been a long-time Sailrite owner and fan, and am currently doing a multi-video review series on the Singer HD, which will include a comparison with the Sailrite soon. Your video gave me some additional things to think about in the process, thanks!
I have a Singer HD, same model as yours. I sew fabric with it except for boat canvas, then go to my Sailrite LSZ-1. Sailrite has great customer support.
My first heavy duty sewing machine was the singer 4432. Although it's said to be a heavy duty, at my first attempt to sew a canvas, don't recall how many layers, the timing went off. After that I bought a Chinese heavy duty called Emery similar to barracuda , and with that one was able to sewing on multiple layers of the canvas
That sounds like good information. We are sewing canvas bags with an industrial machine but looking to get a few machines for classes. I found the Emery machine online on the manufacturer’s website but I cannot find somewhere to buy it. Where did you get yours from?
Thank you so much for producing this video. I’m a hobbyist leather maker and spending big money on a sailrite is just not justifiable at this time. Really great content that helped out. 👍
I have the Ultrafeed LSZ model with the monster wheel. I have been doing some leather, but your demo was awesome. One thing I do have is a few sets of feed dogs and presser feet. The set for canvas is serrated, very sharp. It will leave a track on leather and even waxed canvas. So I have another set that is smooth, and another that has a light knurling. Sailrite does say that if you have a special request for feet that you should let them know. They might make it! I am quite happy with Sailrite, their customer service is awesome, great vids on yourtube, and they sell a ton of stuff for sewing.
Thank you for doing this video, and also for your thoughtful and careful explanations I'm in the process of looking for a heavy-duty machine and was wondering if the singer is "good enough" for my needs. You've helped very much!
Right now Im sorting out a brothet industrial eith a clutch motor. When you speak of high speed I hear you. I changed the pully wheel to a smaller size, 45mm. Just received a shorter belt, yet to install it. Nrxt step will be the extend the clutch arm, see how that goes. Why all this. I eant to see if I teally need a walking foot machine. Im still up in the air about a switch to a servo motor. Testing continurs.
I am using the Singer Heavy Duty to sew leather for shoe making but many parts are glued first to hold seams together and the Singer gets sticky and won't sew, have you had this problem?
I'd love for you to help me with my machine...Sailrite has been no help..My LZ1 doesn't sew two pieces of anything together consistently...Ready to use it as a spare boat anchor
Is the singer 4432 is better than the 4423? Im trying to get one according to amazon 4423 is more popular. Which singer model would you recommend good sir? I mainly use it to hem my denim jeans.
I hate my Singer HDuty 4452. I used it gleefully about 3x, and then something went wrong and now it wont sew through thin cotton. I bought an 120 year old Singer treadle machine to use instead I was so upset. The HD4452 just sits and I am thinking of selling it strongly. However, watching you here is kind of mind blowing. I may have to relook at why my Machine went out. Any advice is welcome Sir.
@@silversprout4586 Thank you. It turns out you are right. I did just that about a week ago, and it works beautifully now, just like the one in this video. I'll admit to feeling extremely fearful, and actually sweating from the process. Turns out its a lot simpler that the scary picture I had created in my mind. I hope that encourages someone else, who like me was intimidated. I also oiled the machine properly and now it runs 80% quieter than when I got it new. I'll still be selling it, as in the last week, I decided to rehab (completely disassemble) a 1903 Singer 27-4 treadle machine, on the back of the success of the HD4452), and though its been a LOT of work, the machine literally.... sings. Its so much quieter and respectable to me than the new machines. So, while its fixed, it will be for sale soon :) Thanks for commenting!
The only thing I don't like about the singer heavy duty is how far the needle is. When you remove that front (or side?) cover, you see that the only reason for it being this big is to hold an aluminum piece that holds the little lamp and the screw for the cover. That's the main reason I'm ditching it for an older Singer model.
Depends on the job you're doing wth it. If you have rabbits raiding the blueberry bushes in your garden in the city, see how long it takes for the cops to show up after you take several shots with a 45. Playing COD too much makes *everyone* a special operator, I guess.
The sailrite is not an industrial machine. Even sailrite calls it a heavy duty sewing machine. For a sewing machine to be called industrial there are parameters that have to be met that the sailrite machine doesn’t even come close to. Now the sailrite fabricator is an industrial sewing machine, but the LS1 and the LZ1 are just heavy duty.
Industrial sewing machine - can sew continuously without stopping Heavy duty - has a more powerful motor than sewing machines of the same size and will have better quality parts. But the motor will have a duty cycle of 1 hour of "continuous" sewing with a 20 minute cooling period. Don't let this video confuse you, this is not an accurate comparison. The Sailrite machine is designed to sew and repair sails and is a walking foot machine. Whereas the Singer HD is designed to do home domestic sewing projects, sewing denim jackets would be the max for this machine since it has a 1 amp motor. The Singer HD is comparable to the sewing machines that were made back in the 1960's and 70's. The all metal frame sewing machines, but all those machines came with a 0.3 to 0.5 amp motor. Where the Singer HD gets the rating of "heavy duty", it comes with a 1 amp motor, with everything thing else reaming the same. So think of the Singer HD as a vintage sewing machine but with a 1 amp motor. Now let's compare the portable "walking foot" machines that start out around $370.00. Why the $1,000 price tag for the Sailrite machines. These Sailrite machines have a thicker casting, and the parts on the inside are cast with a steal alloy instead of the cheaper cast iron parts. Now the Sailrite machines are assembled to use aboard sailboats and yachts. They come with everything you need to start sewing. You don't have to buy any accessories, just buy thread and needles and start sewing. It also comes with a lifetime warranty if any part should break. The cheaper portable walking foot machines don't come with any accessories and some of the parts inside need to be upgraded. So when it all said and done for how much money you'll need to spend upgrading the cheaper walking foot machine to match the Sailrite machines, the price will end up being the same.
all Internet all e bay is suddenly all about Singer Heavy Duty - in the last 24 hours there are more than 10 4423 Heavy duties on auction- what is this - some repair shop- sale? Bobin Case replacement University organised by Currys?
The singer ‘heavy duty’ will struggle to sew 2 layers of tissue paper. Don’t know how this fellow seems to think they are on any comparable level whatsoever. I have a singer ‘heavy duty’. I have reset the timing the first three times i used it. Will sell it on it at the first opportunity.
I have the singer heavy duty and its amazing. Ive used it on denim, vinyl, leather, thick layers, and even more light weight fabrics. Maybe you got a dud.
The Singer is a pile of rubbish, the only thing heavy about it is when used as a paper weight. Let’s be honest here if you try and sew anything heavy on it you will continue to knock the bobbin timing off! I know this from personal experience, in my opinion I’d literally save the money and buy a Juki or Juke walking foot for less money than the sailrite. The sailrite is also very restricted in the foot clearance, and it’s expensive compared to the Juke or Juki, the only thing going for it is the size compared to others etc. it’s just the price that makes me comment as such. The sailrite is super loud too. But thanks for the. Idea nonetheless the less.
The man may not live in a palace (excellent view though) but he has a Sailrite and a Singer Heavy Duty. So he's blessed beyond measure. 👍
