I have used Tubes and tubes with foam ear plugs in them. Not giving away too much. But try different types of hooks in the tubes. I’ve learned to think outside of the box from you. Thanks Matt.
Another one for the playlist hehe! The crank bait approach has produced a lot of walleyes AND smallmouths for me around points and "rock fields" between 15-18 to 25 feet deep... Gotta shorten the leader a little and try that!!
The other i had the idea of rigging a 3’3 Kaitech on the mini Carolina rig , work’s like a charm , one of my favorite technique rocky bottom in river ! Thank you 🙏🏻 Matt
been carolina rigging hard bait since 1994 and some pros in Arkansas before they became Pros and some were pros kinda chuckled at me, I cashed checks and that's all that counts. speed craw is a Greers Ferry Carolina rig favorite for sure.
Yeah I remember reading about it years ago in a Fishing Facts magazine article in like 1992. I took one of my Cotton Cordell crank baits that I had cracked the molded in bill and sanded it off and used it.
Since it floats..Carolina rigging a jackall gantral or jr. size in and around brim beds.. Also being able to tie to the secondary line tie on the chin could really keep that bait running vertical. I’ll be trowing this in the test tank soon (aka the neighbors pool)
As a walleye fisherman to, I've oftentimes though about using a square bill/ carolina. But haven't! I think I will. I've always been one to experiment and tinker. Most are failure's but this is worth a try.
Not only do they use a heavier plastic on the bottom of the Keitech- they mark the very center of the bait on the belly- that's where you insert a nail weight if you want to weight it to stay down and fall in a horizonal orientation. I like to fish the 5-6-inch Keitech on bottom this time of year- if you think about it, it's no bigger than a large worm. And if you insert the nail weights in the belly where they leave gaps in the ribs to mark center- you don't need anything else- you can just rig it on an EWG and chunk it out there- it will fall in a horizontal orientation to bottom, and then you can slowly drag it like a C rig. You don't have the weight then banging into things, making fish curious but- I fish on a kayak and fishing a traditional C rig is very difficult because of the leader length- this fixes that issue for me. It's also hard to set the hook on a C-rig from a kayak. I don't know about anyone else but when I'm on the deck of a boat and I set a C rig, I take a couple steps back to help eliminate slack- then I swing really wide to one side- it's a very exaggerated motion. You can't do that on a kayak- it makes it much more difficult to get a good set on a fish that's any distance from you. But fishing the keitech the way I described is very similar- I'm just slow dragging it with the rod tip down, then reeling in the slack, repeat. Edit: Going back out tomorrow for the first time since the heart attack, can't wait to get back on the water. This break has been good for me really- I think, I was starting to get burnt out. Fishing the same spots over and over every season, catching the same fish- starts getting old.
Awesome video Matt. I never thought of using a squarebill. Have you noticed fish using the heavy sinker of a carolina rig to help throw the treble hooks? Seems like that might be a concern. If it is, can adjustments in leader length help minimize that risk?
Dude I literally bought this bait yesterday and when I was fishing it today I thought I was going to mention it to you and see what your thoughts were and I now see this video lol 😂
Matt what about throwing a swing head or wobblehead bifflehead jig? I saw a video not too long ago from Davie height and he was saying that. Especially if you're fishing in River situations where you have current. He throws a Carolina rig. Your bait moves off from your actual weight and he doesn't feel it's as effective. Maybe in those situations he said he would rather pick up a swing head jig. Just curious what your thoughts are. I see a lot of videos guys are doing on swing head jigs basically raving that it is equivalent to a crankbait.
Are you familiar with Hell Creek Lures at all? They're from Hartland Wisconsin and they seem right up your alley. They have some super-crazy crankbaits. Think a squarebill crossed with a hollow-body frog. Hank over at Bass Geek did a segment on them. I can't find a website for them, but the do have an Instagram. I'd be curious to know your thoughts. I'm thinking of getting a few, but I'm wondering if it's gimmicky.
What size and type of weight do you use on a carolina rig with a square bill crank bait? Weight? Type of weight? How long the leader? What weight of mono or floro?
I used to troll squarebills Carolina rigged over points and humps on the clearwater's of lake Havasu and Lake Powell 20 years ago and crush them.Almost like cheating
A Manns 1 minus works well on a 3 ft leader. Hula Grubs are my first choice for Carolina rigs
nice!

Katie with the catch and release concept has changed my life. No joke. Thanks 🙏

I've been Carolina rigging floating crankbaits for crappie for years. Thats how I find them. Great tip.
Yeah I remember reading about it years ago in a Fishing Facts magazine article in like 1992. I took one of my Cotton Cordell crank baits that I had cracked the molded in bill and sanded it off and used it.
🤔👍
Good stuff
Would never think to carolina rig a squarebill. Crazy. Kinda cool…. Almost bought some of those slamamanders yesterday lol
you should!

thats an interesting thought. let us know how it works!
You can always kneel’n’reel a crank! Old school style
its an option
A bait and presentation I have to work on more from the Bank. Thanks for the tips
You can do it!
Great tips!!! Definitely juicy!!! My favorite is the zman fatty z...like live bait at times I use light hook
thats a good one too

its really similar to walleye guys trolling cranks to get them super deep in a way.
Lead weight and a tube with a rattle in it. Fast or slow.

it can
I like the ultravibe Texas riged, I haven't tried it on a Carolina rig.
give it a try!
I gotta use my Carolina rig soon. Thanks for the ideas, Matt
you bet!
Makes perfect sense. Thank you for sharing
Glad it was helpful!
Matt thanks for all the tips.

Great video!!👊🏻 Like the one about using a squarebill. Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
Thanks, you too!
I love your "mad scientist " type mind! You keep coming up with mods i have not thought up or seen. Great work
More to come!

swing head can be a great bait!
How fast are you moving that Carolina rig to get the action on some of those baits
slow steady sweep
What size of sinker do you use then with the squarebills?
1 oz +
If I go back up north I’m trying that square bill Carolina rigged , good one
smallmouth love it!
Question would you be able to use the mini Carolina rig on the square bull 5.5 trick you showed us. Was trying to simplify for learning purposes
the mini carolina rig is probably not heavy enough unless you use a small square bill
@@MattStefanFishing So what weight size would you recommend for that technique
The juice alright I’m gonna try at least 3 out of 4 immediately I don’t have slabamander but do like the look
good luck!
I bet it would work here on speckle trout too , I’m trying this definitely , when I’m trolling for em
only one way to find out!
@@MattStefanFishing yep 👍🏻
Matt on the square bull would you keep leader at about 3 feet with mono?
i go about 2-3 ft
Great tips Matt as always!
thanksd!
What size weight to properly work a square bill on a Carolina rig?
1 oz

never heard of them but ill check them out
Good info, Matt! Pls keep it coming. :)
will do!
What size and type of weight do you use on a carolina rig with a square bill crank bait?
Weight? Type of weight? How long the leader? What weight of mono or floro?
i use a 1 oz weight with a 2.5 ft leader on fluorocarbon
Bullet weight or egg?
Another great video, enjoy the tip’s video
Thanks 👍
Thanks
you bet!!
Thanks Matt!
No problem!
🍺Thanks Matt.

haha!
Dang! I thought I invented the Carolina rigged swimbait technique!
I dont know who invented it but its killer!
WOULD YOU USE A FLOATING WORM RIGGED WACKY?
worth a try!
That looks awesome
It is!
I would think you would very seldom land an actual bite on a crankbait behind a crig weight
use sharp weights and youd be surprised how rarely you lose one
More weapons!! Thanks Matt
you bet!
Does it float or have alot off salt in it need to get me those something 🤔 new
it doesnt float like a zman but it does glide great on a carolina rig
Link’s
Awesome!
Love the SpeedCraw!
yep!
Found the likes I’m not a dummy now lol
haha!
Your gonna have phone call .
