As much as we all may hate him, Littlefinger PLAYED the Game of Thrones probably better than anyone else. He made MORE successful moves than virtually anyone else in the show. His hand was behind so much drama. He turned an entire nation on its head in a quest for his own advancement.
until the end where, as Sansa put it, "either you didn't know and you're stupid, or you did know, and you are my enemy." Another character assassinated by living past the end of the written material.
I'm not sure why you say "as much as we all may hate him", as though there's anything commendable about it. We hate him BECAUSE he plays the game. That's the point. The game is bad, and the people who play it are awful. All of them. The more effectively they play it, the worse of a person they are.
Actually Jack Gleeson says that the stories about people coming up to slap him were not true. They actually treated him VERY well because they were certain that he was being slapped by other people. They were a little annoying because they kept asking him to say the lines (Bring me his head, I am NOT TIRED, etc), but that was it. He actually retired because he was a child actor and he wanted to go to college, see what else life had to offer, work on charity, live off of all the money he made as a kid, etc. Which is cool. He funded an independent live theater troupe (of which he was a part) and eventually went back to acting because he wanted to go back. Also there's a video of him talking at a college and answering questions. He seems like the nicest guy in the world. It's VERY weird.
King Robert was actually not a bad king tbh because he was self aware enough that he was not going to be good at rulling so he left the actual work to Jon Arryn who kept the realm stable. It's Little Finger and Varys who destabilized the realm, Little Finger motives are clear but it's Varys who's more mysterious. He says he does what's good for the realm but has worked against three kings to sabotage their rule. His motives are definitely something else.
If you're a serious actor, live theater is so much more fun. You go on every night and the play is a little different every time. Anything can happen and you have to go with it. On a set you wait around to do a few minutes and then you have to do it again and again (and again and again and again for hours ifyou are stuck with Kubrick as a director) until you break for the day.
The scene were Jamie rapes Cersei is not in the book's, he also doesn't kill his cousin to escape. The TV show has a weird obsession of making Jamie a worst person than he already is.
The scene is in the book, it just isn't rape. Cersei wants him and doesn't mean her protests and they both know it. But thoughts conflicting with the dialogue are of course difficult to portray on camera. The TV writers/producers didn't mean for it to be a rape. I guess the director should have done something different to make it clear it was consensual.
The Dornish want to form a secret alliance with the Targaryens against the crown. This is Prince Doran's plan for revenge. To do this, he wanted to marry his son Quentin to Daenerys. It was also he who hid Daenerys in Dorne in the first years after the fall of the Targaryens. It was he who later persuaded Illario to hide them (Dany and Viserys) in Pentos. Doran also recruited Varys, who can get Tyrion out because he knows the castle dungeons and corridors like no one else. In addition, he paid the Golden Swords (an elite mercenary squad) to wait for Dany in Volantis. Unfortunately, Dany is clearly not going to Volantis, and does not want to return to the west yet. Oberyn was also part of Doran's plan. The Tyrrells have claims against Oberyn because of the long-ago murder of their relative. Therefore, the very fact of Oberyn’s presence in the capital was supposed to worsen relations between the Lannisters and the Tyrrells. But Tywin cannot expel Oberyn from the capital, because the crown does not have any leverage over Dorne.
