This song was conceived in a hotel room in Ft Lauderdale. Someone had given Santana a tape recorded live in Cuba, of Pello el afrokan. He played it back in front of us (Hector Márquez (Tetera,) “Futi Ángulo” and myself. He asked his bass player to make a riff and asked Chapito to follow with his sticks on top of the hotel room’s dresser, Hector played a cong riff on the night table abs Carlos grabbed his guitar. The rest is history and this is part of that history. Circa 1973-74

I was alone at home one night, some 40 years ago. It had started to snow outside and our garden was already covered in an ankle-high layer of magic. I put Maria Caracoles on the record player and positioned the speakers in the window. At approximately midnight I went into the garden, turned the volume up to "insane" and danced myself stupid. Thanks, Santana!

As kids in the San Francisco Bay Area we grew up listening to all types of music. Santana, Malo and TOP were just a few of the groups. This mash up has former members of all of them. We thought the music we listened to was normal. I know now they were masterpieces!

I remember seeing this on TV back in the day. I was glued to the set.. They'd cut to an interview with Carlos between songs. I wish I could see the entire show. Oh well. Carlos was talking about all the "gimmicks" that bands used at that time, "without giving one iota" for the feel of the music. Great album. Underestimated.

Mozambique is the name of the Afro-Cuban rhythm they're playing. If you want to hear the original, which really features the mozambique rhythm, do a search on Pello El Afrokan, the composer of this tune and the inventor of Mozambique from Cuba.

Great memories. I still have this album Festival on vinyl. Carlos tearing it up on
his Yamaha SG2000, Greg Walker vocal, Pablo on bass & vocals, Tom Coster on keys, Graham Lear
on drums, one of the greatest percussion duos in history with Jose "Chepito" Areas on Timbales (nobody better, NOBODY!) & a super young Raul Rekow on congas, & that great Tower of Power horn section. Carlos also used them way back on the " Abraxas" album. Carlos' next great keyboard player Chester Thompson who he played with for so many years was also from Tower of Power. So they have a long history. Carlos always has had the finest musicians playing for him. Thanks for posting this, I still listen to this cut often but haven't seen the video in so long, a ripping merengue Santana Style. I have every album he's ever done & a hero & major influence on my guitar playing since 1970. One of the greatest & purest artists we're still lucky enough to enjoy. Again thanx..

frommthe incredible album Festival, the group re-focused by Carlos' astral avatar - Sr Leon Patillo, And were there only one tune to describe his perfect fit in thei group that tune is One With The Sun from Borboletta. nowhere is the les Paul guitar better amped echoed or recorded - never - not as its found on this record. And MS pulls east Bay drum stroke to fine effect; Patillo is an exceptional Rhodes piano player; he's the one who puts new voicings in samba pa ti, others; Coster & him click
