Great review, I have just ordered this microphone and this video helped confirm what it can do and can't do. Really appreciated that you showed the sound setup with USB which some other reviews didn't do.
This is a great review Curtis! I just purchased the Shure MV7 and I really enjoy it. I noticed that the XLR cable was causing some feedback -- so I picked up a new one and it works perfectly now!
Fabulous video Curtis! The best microphone review I have seen (and I’ve watched hundreds). You are clear, informative, objective and a delight to listen to. Thank you.
This is a really great review! You covered literally everything I wanted to know about this mic, and explained it in such a clear and concise way. I've dabbled with audio for a long time now, but I still learned a lot from watching this. I would really love to see a similar video for the Rode Procaster even if it has a bit less feature-wise.
I just got this microphone and while it's not exactly the SMB7 and I don't expect it to last the same as one, for the price it can't be beaten. I've tested many USB microphones and this one is the best sounding by far. As you mention, the limiter is practically useless and the plosives are a thing to look at, but other than that it's a great piece of gear for the money!
the touch controls are not just you. all reviews so far have had the same issue. what would make this worthwhile for me is that it be used concurrently on xlr and usb. making it possible to livestream and record, or record to 2 sources at the same time. just my .02 and thanks for another great review.
Some people have reported ground loop/buzzing when using both outputs at the same time. Be prepared for that. You may need an isolating tranformer for the XLR output.
Thanx for this review! A call would have made the phone sending. While during watching a video the phone is more on the reciever side. And another thing - sorry for that: The amount of „background noise“ or room sound that the capsule of a mic pics up depends on the polar pattern and the frequency response, NOT on the type of soundconversion. If a cardioid should reject the sound in a 90 degree angle by 10db, it will do exactly that, no matter if its a dynamic or a condenser mic. 😃👍. I love your reviews! Not only the well researched info but also the calm and relaxed way of presentation 🍀.
Thanks Klaus. The practical difference in how much room sound a microphone picks up has to do not with the polar pattern so much as the fact that one *usually works closer to a dynamic microphone. This increases the signal to noise ratio. And the reason one generally works closer to a dynamic mic is the lower overall sensitivity.
Thank you dear sir for this useful and detailed review. As someone who knows nothing about microphones, and would like to improve audio during Zoom calls, I appreciate your counsel.
As a hapless victim of the Blue Yeti, I am blown away by the quality of the MV7. Your review also covered all bases and I was very impressed by your professionality while you did not go into needless details (like complex studio measurements which makes no sense in this price class). Also skipping the XLR makes perfect sense as it really makes little sense to buy with this mic and one would only use if you already own it, in which case a SM7B plus cloudlifter for 200 bucks plus audio interface for at least 180 bucks would be the play.
Beautiful review, thank you for the information. I will be picking up this microphone for work and call purposes. You're in-depth information and review are greatly appreciated! Will be watching more.
Fantastic review Curtis. One question...when using with XLR will the Shure 'save' it's settings after it's been unplugged from the app? I run a podcast and we have 4 Shures....but not 4 iphones or laptops! Therefore we record direct with XLR into a Zoom H6 recorder and use the limiter in that...then edit the sound in post on the computer. Many thanks for your reviews. You've helped me spend literally eye watering sums of money!
I don't think it does because it would need a power source to do that. However, the effects are not that great. The limiter in the H6 is as good as the one in the MV7, which is not very good, so you're not losing anything there. The main things are the EQ and compression. Are you post processing your audio or streaming live?
Thank you for this fantastic review Curtis! For those that are puzzling over Shure's decision to use micro USB - I think I may know why. Take a look at Shure's "MVI" audio interface and take note of the control panel and USB connectivity - it's nearly identical to what you see with the MV7. From what I can see the application used to enhance the MVI experience is the same as what comes with the MV7 as well.
@@curtisjudd This is definitely not my area of expertise so I likely have it all wrong. What I'm meaning to say is I wonder if the MV7 actually has the MVI interface built right in to it. I really like this mic (thanks in no small part to your very helpful review of it) but have gotten hung up on making the purchase due to the price and the Micro USB connection. I started researching XLR mic + USB interface options that have the features I'm interested in and ended up right back with Shure products - the MVI and the MV7X. That combination in my area at least costs more than the MV7. For me it seems that all paths end with the MV7! My original comment was perhaps just my attempt at determining why.
Poor mans SM7B for sure. I’m very interested in this mic since I don’t necessarily want the accompanying gear needed to properly drive the much more expensive SM7B. Thanks for the review Curtis!
Thanks Curtis, very thorough as always. I actually bought the MV7 recently and love it. The SM7B sounds a bit warmer and it is more pleasing. However, the MV7 is a great value and excellent for streaming.

As always, great detailed review. I just ordered up one to use as an office /zoom/ videoconferencing microphone when on site assignments where I don’t want to have to haul around the mix-pre audio bag to use my xlr mics, but of course can always use this mic with that gear as well. Sorry, I couldn’t use you affiliate links on this purchase, had to be Amazon Prime to ship to the post office in this small northern town in Canada where I am on a long site assignment.
USB micro was designed with expectation of cable breaking. That's why they have springs on the cable connector. Better to have broken cable, that broken socket. I guess usb-c license is more expensive and this mic is about the price. Thanks for the review. It seems to be an excellent choice on a budget.
Is it possible to use both USB and XRL at the same time? For example, if you wanted to record to the computer via the USB, but then also record a backup track to a handheld recorder via XRL.

Thank you so much for this video I really appreciate it. This video helped me in making my decision on this microphone. I believe I'm fully ready for my twitch / UA-cam setup that I've been working on, my order just was placed on Amazon.
@@curtisjudd Maybe, but I like a good crisp sounding tone. I personally think the SM7b is a bit muffled, but then again I'm not a fan of kids like most others. It's where your voice really helps me find mics I like.
If you have a good enough XLR interface that can drive a Shure SM7B and you can afford it I don't really see much reason to consider the MV7. For most people any condenser mic like the MV7 is going to pick up way too much background noise and reverb. Unless you're house is quiet as a mouse and acoustically treated your much better off with a Dynamic mic imo, any dynamic mic. SM7B is one of the best ones out there, but may need a Cloudlifter to go with it possibly which adds another $150 to its $400 cost. A USB much would be good to take on the go with a laptop or if you're just starting out otherwise nah.
@@JStream From my exerience: No. In this case you are probably much better off with a P48 powered condenser, something like a KMS105. @@curtisjudd By the way Curtis, what´s your opinion about the Carbon Mackie´s mic? It seems to have a nice and clear sound. In this moment I can´t afford buying the Shure MV7 USB, this will be my next step, but I need now one with good quality around the 100 dolars (I don´t like Blue Yeti, neither Big Foot) for podcast, basic music recordings (I´m a singer songwriter) and to read (to record) text audiobooks. Thank you so much in advise, for your advise.
Nice review. I thought your voice sounds great on it. I would def buy the SM7b foam windscreen. Interesting that the MV7 (USB mode) and SM7b have inverted waveforms from each other. I noticed this in the samples of your and Emma's quotation samples. I inverted the sections of the MV7 that were "below the line" to "above the line" and the samples looked almost identical. Inverting did not seem to change the sound to my ears.
Interesting find - thanks for pointing that out. That's good to know if we happen to use the two of them for a podcast. Mic bleed could create some interesting issues.
when you record the samples, is there any treatment at all in the room? and maybe a stylus would work on the touch surface? also, the mic on a different table is a really good idea. you could probably do a whole course on video and audio for conference calls alone. im guessing its a big market, especially right now. just from observing one person who does 1 or 2 conferences a week, about an hour each...there are a lot of problems that come up with regard to audio and video, mostly audio. anyhow, thanks for another great video!
Thanks Bubba! There was some treatment in the room for these samples, yes. I wanted to do it in another room but ran into some practical scheduling issues.
Great review! Thank you! Have you ever connected this mic directly to a camera (I am filming with a LUMIX G9)? I’m curious whether it’s possible, what connectors I will need, and whether it will hurt the sound quality in the finished recording if I do that versus connecting it directly into my computer. I’m worried about the post processing and getting my voice and audio paired up correctly, so if I can avoid that step, I’d love to. Thanks!
First, Happy New Year Curtis. You've made my media production and podcast life much easier! Much appreciated. I have three questions: 1) any thoughts on after-market shock mounts for the MV7? 2) Was there any difference in the XLR and USB output sound or gain? 3) Just to confirm ... does system audio route back through the on-mic headphone jack so you can hear yourself and your guest(s)? I believe you mentioned "mic vs monitor level adjustment, but just wanted to confirm. Again, thanks for every thing you do for all of us!!!!
1) I don't have an experience with specific after market shock mounts but that would help isolate the mic from desk vibrations. 2) Nothing obvious that I noticed. 3) Yes.
I bought a new MV7. Im using it without the Interface. So while listening the track from my DAW on the headphones connected to the MIC. I need to also hear it from the Desktop Headphone Port. Like Someone is singing and I am Recording. But If i set the OUTPUT as MV7 I can only hear it through MIC Headphones. and If i set OUTPUT as Desktop Headphone port, I can not hear the track from Mic Headphone. Please help.
01:41 Thanks, excellent comparion - SM7B all day, given a good preamp is available... Does anybody know if the MV7 XLR output is directly connected with the capsule or transformer coupled?
Thanks for the thorough review, Curtis. I'm trying to minimize clutter in my home office/studio and using an XLR/USB mic may be a good solution - I can put my Rodecaster Pro on a shelf and use the USB mic for conferences. If positioned correctly, do you think the MV7 connected via USB in "Far" mode could be passable as an overhead boom mic? I'd rather not have yet another piece of gear cluttering my space if I don't have to. Thanks in advance.
Hi John, it'll sound far away - just depends on how far away you place it. My sense is that "far" in this context is really meant to be about 12 inches max.
Curtis. Great video.. tell me please please is the mv7 a sensible choice for singing in addition to speech which I think you have proved is a good choice? I really don’t want to go to the trouble of connecting non usb solutions if possible.
Great review. Thanks. Could you explain why to use -23 LUFS, not -16 LIFS? I mean even Apple recommends -16 LUFS for podcasts audio. Is -23 some kind of standard?
Hi Michael - good question. The main reason is that I want people to hear what the microphone sounds like directly in a recording WITHOUT any sort of processing. to get to -16 LUFS, compression or limiting is generally required and that changes the sound. So my goal is help people hear the raw audio. Of course you can always process it to make it sweeter in real-world use.
Hi Learner Forever, yes, -23 LUFS is the loudness standard for TV broadcast in the European Union. The reason I use it here is so that the loudness is at the same level as my other microphone reviews AND perhaps more importantly, to get the audio to that loudness, no other processing such as compression is necessary. I think it is really important for people to hear what a microphone sounds like without any processing so you know what you're getting into. Hope that makes sense!
Hi Power of Film, depends on your budget. My favorite is the OC White ProBoom® Ultima® Gen2 Ultra Low Profile Adjustable Mic Boom with a 12” Fixed Horizontal Arm and Machined Table Bushing. Spendy, but really good.
@@curtisjudd Thank you! I've spent a good 3 hours with this mic and I'm impressed at how good and crisp it sounds. Also love the versatility of the usb and xlr set up.
Two questions...hopefully you still get notifications for new comments on old posts 📫! 1. Are the magnetic connectors pretty reliable, so you could just leave the micro-USB in, using the universal magnetic connector for the cord...protecting both connections, the micro USB, and the port on the mic, from foreign materials, or bending? 2. Do you see much difference between podcast needs and voice-over needs? (I am intending to learn voiceover work, part time. )
1) The USB-micro port works with friction. You can leave the cable connected to keep the port protected from dust. 2) Often for voice over, VO artists will prefer condenser microphones in an acoustically treated space as the idea option. But if you're working in a space that isn't acoustically treated or doesn't sound great, a dynamic mic like the MV7 is probably a better choice because you work up close to the mic. This improves your signal to noise ratio so you pick up less of the reflected sound in the room.
If you can afford the SM7B and an interface with enough gain to support it, why not go that direction? Then you'll never wonder. And if you hate it, you can surely sell it and recover most of the cost.
@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions I was looking at them today. $519 CDN plus 13% tax on top of that along with some type of booster, many people keep telling me the Cloudlifter, but I have found out there are more products out there that may or may not work better. Any thoughts on that Curtis? Thanks for the reply, by-the-way. I really enjoy your channel with the content you provide and the quality of the content is top shelf. Take care, have a nice day.
Then the MV7 seems like a really good option. 🎙 I've used the Fethead which is similar to the Cloudlifter. It's pretty good. But if your recorder or interface supplies enough clean gain, you don't need one of those in-line microphone amplifiers.
Hi, Curtis. Thanks for the review. How does the sound compare with the xlr connected vs the usb connection? Of course depends on the preamp used vs the preamp built inside the mic’s internal audio interface. But with Flat specs on the usb connection and flat via xlr how does it sound? The same? Cheers
@@curtisjudd Thanks for the response. It’s good to have a quality USB mic, just for portability. This one is really pricey, but the sound seems really good for USB.

Very good and useful analysis. Thank you. I hope Shure uses the connector type C next time. I'll be waiting for it.
Thanks Frank.
@@frankpalpieris I haven't used the Mackie, unfortunately.
@@curtisjudd Thanks for answer Curtis. I think I´ll try it. Afterwards, the MV7.
Excellent presentation.... Well done Curtis!
Thanks Sheriff!
Just ordered it (through the link, of course). I'm pumped because background noise is a huge factor on Zoom calls with my _Blue Yeti_ right now.
I hope it works well for you Alex!
Thanks for the review! I think I’ll purchase this mic to start my youtube channel!
👍
when you record the samples, is there any treatment at all in the room? and maybe a stylus would work on the touch surface? also, the mic on a different table is a really good idea. you could probably do a whole course on video and audio for conference calls alone. im guessing its a big market, especially right now. just from observing one person who does 1 or 2 conferences a week, about an hour each...there are a lot of problems that come up with regard to audio and video, mostly audio. anyhow, thanks for another great video!
Thanks Bubba! There was some treatment in the room for these samples, yes. I wanted to do it in another room but ran into some practical scheduling issues.
Excellent presentation Curtis.... as usual!
Thanks PianoManChuck. I hope you're staying well!
You’re on point with the usb c cable.
👍
Excellent video as usual, thanks for making and doing all the tests with all the mics.
Thanks Andy.
Great Review Curtis! You always do a thorough job.
Thanks Rhett!
Thanks!
There isn’t an output on this mic which will work directly with the G9. You’d need a mixer between them.
Top noch review! Got everything i wanted to know about the mic.
👍
The Zoom F2 and F2 BT with 32-bit float recording are coming, will we see your take on these 2 new field recorders?
Yes. 👍
Great breakdown!! I was looking for something just like this. Thanks a world.
Thanks Rashid.
Thank you for this review. Was able to see that I can use a usb c.
👍
Hello curtis, does this mic got very less background noise?
If you have it within about 1cm of your mouth, yes.
Great review, as always!!!!
Thanks Padre.
3) Yes.
As always. Very brilliant video. 👏

Hi i have a blue yeti mic but in this my voice like nasal in audio so does it good for me?
I prefer the VV7 on most voices, yes.
Excellent review, thanks as always!
Thanks!
In the ShurePlus Motiv app, go to manual mode. Then you can set the Monitor mix to the mid point to hear both.
The review is was looking for. Great!
👍
I’m late but thanks for the review! Always so well thought out and honest.
Thanks Tony!
Great Job as Always Curtis !!
Thanks Blayde!
01:41 Thanks, excellent comparion - SM7B all day, given a good preamp is available... Does anybody know if the MV7 XLR output is directly connected with the capsule or transformer coupled?
Thanks Tom. I'm not sure whether it is transformer coupled. Anyone else?
This an amazing product review video. :)
Thanks.
Great video. May I ask what kind of table top stand you're using?
Thanks Julie. Yes, that's the "On-stage Stands Desk Stand." Link in the description. Happy recording!
Great video, very informative and straight forward.
Thanks Snalle.
@@curtisjudd Thanks for the quick reply. I'll look into a small video or shotgun mic, instead.
Loved this review!! Thank you.
Thanks Pierre!
Curtis. Great video.. tell me please please is the mv7 a sensible choice for singing in addition to speech which I think you have proved is a good choice? I really don’t want to go to the trouble of connecting non usb solutions if possible.
Yes, absolutely. Note that you will still probably want to be quite close to the mic, even when singing - probably no farther than 8 or 10 inches max.
Great review. Thanks. Could you explain why to use -23 LUFS, not -16 LIFS? I mean even Apple recommends -16 LUFS for podcasts audio. Is -23 some kind of standard?
European broadcast standard.
@@curtisjudd Thank you! 🤗
Thank you, Curtis, great review!
I loved the reference about pizza (for those who watch a lot of mic review videos on UA-cam).
Cheers! A nod to my friend Bandrew Scott over at Podcastage. 😀
How do you normalize to 23 LUFS ? And why did you choose 23 particularly ? Any short tutorial would be great and highly appreciated 🤩🙏🏼 thanks
-23 LUFS is standard for broadcasting in Europe.
Thanks for the detailed review.
Thanks Craig, you're welcome!
Great review I’ve used a blue snowball for about 4-5 years and I was eating to do a upgrade for streaming I was gonna use a goxlr mini and a mv7
Good combo.
Hi Curtis, Love the video ! I was curious what kind of broadcast stand would you suggest for this microphone. Thanks Keep up the good work !
Hi Power of Film, depends on your budget. My favorite is the OC White ProBoom® Ultima® Gen2 Ultra Low Profile Adjustable Mic Boom with a 12” Fixed Horizontal Arm and Machined Table Bushing. Spendy, but really good.
@@curtisjudd not overly concerned about budget, I'll check it out thanks !
Just picked up mine today! I came from the Samson G track pro. Great mic but it was a time for an upgrade
Congrats on the MV7! I hope it works well for you. Happy recording!
@@curtisjudd Thank you! I've spent a good 3 hours with this mic and I'm impressed at how good and crisp it sounds. Also love the versatility of the usb and xlr set up.
Great job Curtis. Thanks.
Thanks for watching.
@@curtisjudd...makes sense.
I'm almost inspired... Great analysis Curtis. I'm still not sure about Shure SM7B vs MV7 hmmmmmm...... 🤔
Very informative video. Thanks Curtis.
Thank you Mark.
Brilliant review!

🙏
Hi, Curtis. Thanks for the review. How does the sound compare with the xlr connected vs the usb connection? Of course depends on the preamp used vs the preamp built inside the mic’s internal audio interface. But with Flat specs on the usb connection and flat via xlr how does it sound? The same? Cheers
Very similar. I didn't notice a big difference with my Universal Audio Apollo x6 which is a pretty decent preamp.
Great video, Curtis, would you pick this or the rode NTG..
For podcasting? I'd choose the MV7.
Excellent review! Thank you.
Thanks Alex.
Thanks, Curtis! Overall, where would you rank this amongst USB microphones?
Hi Jim, for acoustically untreated rooms, this is my favorite. But it is a fair bit more expensive than some of the others.
@@curtisjudd Thanks for the response. It’s good to have a quality USB mic, just for portability. This one is really pricey, but the sound seems really good for USB.
Hey Curtis, another great video. I will try one next week. :)
Thanks João. Happy recording!
Brilliant Curtis! Thank you so much.
Thanks Mal.
