80% of a Garmin 840 for one third of the price (Review of the Magene C606)

  • Cycling headunits are an interesting topic. They really only have one job, which is to sit on your bike and relay data and information to you as the rider. Their price can often be quite high, with some models costing more than an iPhone. So is this price justifyable, and what if a competitor offered a similar product but for a fraction of the price.
In this video I offer a quick fire review of the Magene C606 as well as some accompanying accessories which Magene sent to me. This video is not sponsored by Magene, they sent me these items with no obligation to give them a positive review, these are my honest thoughts.

CORRECTION: the Garmin 840 and 1040 has brought in USB-C
For some reason I thought it wasnt implemented yet.

I love your video review but unfortunately this error discredits your comparison of the Magene to the 840 (as alluded to in your title) as it shows you have never actually used the 840 at all…

I bumped into the world of Magene in 2020 when I bought their speed/cadence sensors, which I then paired with XOSS. When my bike was stolen, I bought Magene Speed/Cadence sensors, HRM and C406. I never had any issues with any of them. I always need to replace the batteries in S/C sensors like every 8 - 9 months (CR2032). I replace the battery in the HRM after about 5 - 6 months. Now with my SRAM QUARQ, I don't use the Magene's cadence sensor anymore. Upon moving to the US from Downunder, the bikkies where totally unfamiliar with this brand that has served me faithfully for nearly 3 years and for close to 2,500 miles/ 4km. I'm in the market for C606 just to add turn-by-turn navigation to my ride instead of relying on maps prompts over earphones.
Thanks for the great review. I miss 'Straya 😻!!

Works well when I turn off radar while bunch riding and many have commented that they love the deceleration warning it gives like the unit featured in your video.

I have the Magene radar and your review of this computer is pretty much spot on. I got the radar for a 3rd of the price of a Garmin radar, it sort of works and is full of bugs.
Magene does not seem to have the best track record when it comes to electronics.
There hasn't been a firmware update for my radar since last year so I don't expect Magene to provide any long term support for their computers.

I think for things we don't rely on for safety its more acceptable to use budget products. But if something may have a direct impact on our wellbeing then perhaps better to just spend the money.

Magene overall good - had a problem with a sticky button on a C406 but very happy with their PES505 power meter (every bit as accurate as my Assioma pedals which are on a different bike) and have a couple of their chest HRMs too.

With these kinds of cheaper products I’m usually quite skeptical of their quality. So I was pleasantly surprised the magene products exceeded my expectations.

most likely this guy is paid by Magene as part of their marketing campaigns which was also launched back in China, but any serious cyclist should not choose this head unit, yes on paper this unit can do what garmin edge 840 does, but when functions as a combined system, at maximum it has 1/3 of the garmin's function for 1/3 of the price, many bugs, malfunctions, design flaws have been reported in China which has 10x the users of this unit, and the consensus is, choose Garmin whenever you can.

At 160usd it's not cheap. Is there the climb feature that Garmin has? For that money I'd probably get a 530 second hand, it's the one I have. If you sweat or wear gloves, or if it rains, the touch screen doesn't work, so you have buttons, it's now cheap, and it does everything. The Garmin training advisor stuff is also something magene clearly doesn't have.

Good review Josh. I replaced my dead Garmin Radar unit with the Magene. Worked perfectly with a Wahoo ELEMNT Roam until I smashed the Wahoo. So instead of shelling out $AUD600 on a new one I bought the Magene C406 Pro for $AUD120. Works perfectly for my needs. I want radar, heart rate, navigation, elevation, load to Strava and it does all that. The screen resolution is basic and black and white but ok. Navigation as you said a bit clunky but works. I do miss the screen sharpness of the Wahoo but there are other things I can spend $500 on so quite happy with it.

If navigation is put on the headunit it needs to be high quality otherwise it’s useless potentially dangerous.
Probably 90% of people I ride with don’t use navigation, but some people like to have the route loaded if they’re doing it for the first time, or they’re not confident in their memory. So it’s a feature some people do use, and look for in a headunit.
