Don’t be too quick to wave goodbye to winter! Last year we had snow in Exeter (Devon) on the 31st of January, and in 2018 on March 1st. On both occasions we were sent home from work, it was that bad. Exeter rarely has snow which made it all the more incredible!

It's the same concept here in Melbourne. Blue skies mean there is no cloud blanketing the skies at night, so heat is able to escape much better and there's more ice/front in the ground during winter. When it is cloudy, that's when you don't see much frost. And for the record, anything above 20 is hot anyway lol and it's been so humid here this past summer.

We’re only half way through January! And we still have another 2 months or so of winter left yet! It has been a very mild winter so far, but a wet one. • @EricIrl

This has been an extremely mild winter so far - so don't think this is how cold it gets, even here in the South. As someone else has said, we had some snow in the South last January. Winter weather can be an issue well into March. I remember (many years ago) watching a Formula 3 motor race at Thruxton (Hampshire) in April - and there was a blizzard.
Regarding "The Chelsea Flower Show", BBC TV covers it extensively so you will be able to see all there is to see during show week. BBC runs at least one programme a night on BBC 2. In fact, you are probably better off watching it on TV as it gets insanely crowded..
There are lots of other flower shows in Britain during the year. The next biggest London (ish) flower show would be the one at Hampton Court which is pretty big in its own right. That will be in July 2020.
If you just want to see lots of flowers, why not try either Kew Gardens or the huge RHS Gardens at Wisley in Surrey. They are both fairly easy to get to from London.

This has not been a typical year. In fact I don't think we have had a typical year for a decade! Our summers used to be warm, with occasional brief showers. Winters were mild, with frost and light snow early in the year. Now we have weeks of scorching sun, droughts, then rain that doesn't stop for weeks. When it does get cold it's minus something for days on end. Things have definitely changed even during my short time on this planet!

As other Brits have mentioned this is a very mild winter. February can be cold and I have seen a little snow in March and once in April. As someone who spends quite a bit of my day outside I don’t like the rain in winter. Yes the rain means it’s warmer day than snow or some clear days, but when it’s 5C and you get wet and there’s a wind chill you feel it more than when your dry and -5C with wind.

It's on the BBC during the afternoon AND in the evening (separate programmes, not repeats) every day of the show showing all its aspects, the show gardens, the awarding of the medals, the exhibition tents, etc., etc.. Lucky girl, we haven't had anything like our usual winter weather yet, (not in the South anyway), and I've even seen a few foolhardy daffodils trying to bloom.
Thinking of our usual climate, I agree with what Billy Connolly said about Scotland's...…………."six months of bad weather, followed by winter!". I can assure you
that, at some stage, we will get a spell of vicious easterly winds with arse-freezing temperatures. Actually, it never gets anywhere near as cold as Finland but
because we are a small island in a lots of seas and nowhere is more than 75 miles from the sea, the air is always damp which makes it seem way colder than
it actually is. Good luck for surviving the rest of this one. The Spring flowers will make it all seem worthwhile...…….................just.

I love winter` give me -15 and snow and a nice morning frost ... but I have honestly Hated the heavy rain we have had over the last couple of days, every time I went out of the door it would start pouring down .. in fact I was starting to feel like a duck. I like the dark nights too because I can see better in the dark and it makes the daylight more enjoyable, I do enjoy the long summer days because you can get so much more done .. but I hate it when the weather starts getting too warm and muggy.

February March better than January because light getting stronger, sun is higher and days lengthening. You can sense it strongly even over just one week. They also tend to be the driest months. However you can get some surprise short sharp cold snaps in those months . Basically run up to spring temperature flip flops all over. In that sense it's the most interesting time of the year. I think average temperature near end of March is about 13C but you can quite easiy find yourself in the park at 20+ in quite strong sunshine thinking - yay summer's here! ...and then following week shivering in snow/hail and ice. Fun times.

Surprisingly, the UK has almost a semi-desert level of rainfall. London has an annual rainfall of 23 inches, a semi-desert has a rainfall of 20 inches or less. That's why the grass turns brown within 10 days if we have consecutive days of sun in summer, there are no reserves of moisture at depth in the soil. We just get a lot of cloudy days because the North Atlantic Jetstream is almost always over the UK.

Yvette, pretty good description of UK winters.A couple of things though. London does act as a heat island and is 1 to 3 degrees warmer than the countryside. This winter has been pretty warm so far, so we haven't had any really cool weather yet. My impression is that February tends to have colder weather than December or January. Its Snow's more often than it used to when I was a kid as well (40 years ago now). A cold period after a fairly damp few weeks is the worst.

This is a VERY warm winter by UK standards. Do not think this is a typical winter - it is not. Our winters have become much warmer but not this warm usually...yet!!! This is also one of the wettest autumns and winters on record. So it is wetter than usual too. I would forget this winter and move on - you have not seen winter in the UK. London has the warmest winter of all alongside far south of England, but again, not this warm! I would start judging next year as it is very unlikely to be this warm again for quite some time. When you do experience a 'normal' winter, it is the windchill that will get you that even -20 in the sun does not. It is a very strange anomaly but one commented on by all from 'colder' countries. You have yet to see 1 winter day since you arrived (which a little bit sad all on its own because most of us are missing our winter season this year!)

I live on the coast of north-east of England. It's never too hot and never too cold.
I live in the rain shadow of The Pennines, The Cheviots and the North York Moors, so don't get pissed on, on a regular basis, like the west of the UK does.
Blue skies, in winter, can mean cold. But, wear your coat, hat and scarf. Job done. Unless you're out on the 'lash'! This is when the young people from my neck of the woods dress as if it's spring/summer, because they can't be arsed to put up with the coat issue - it spoils their ensemble.
The changing of the seasons is beautiful. Commenting on the length of daylight is compulsory for some reason; it always takes us by surprise.
But, the best thing about living in England is that if you're not happy with the weather you're getting, you're at the crossroads of the world; so you can pop on a plane and bugger off somewhere else.

Generally speaking, and different years we have different weather so you can only generalise, February is colder than January and we are much more likely to get snow if it is going to fall at all. This year, January has been very mild indeed but the pay off is it has been extremely wet.

This is the mildest Winter I can remember in my (long) lifetime. I had a single rose on my balcony that flowered four weeks before Christmas and I have some daisy-like flowers that are still growing in full bloom in their pots. My heating bill is half what it was last year. We haven't got into a proper Winter yet.

This winter has been mild, I think we moan so much because it is so changeable so it is easy to get those clothing choices wrong. Look out for all the little buds on the trees when spring is on the way , now I have noticed them I look for them every year. My dad has pots with all the earliest spring flowers so they come up in order as the weather changes like a little flower mexican wave, it is lovely.

We usually get about 6 to 8 weeks of cold and wet with some occasional dry clear days, also we rarely get mountains of snow and deep bitter winters, it's mostly just wet for a few weeks, in the summer we get 6 to 8 weeks of pretty hot weather (sometimes too hot for me, I don't like the heat), the other 8 or 9 months of the year are very pleasant, somewhere between 15 and 20 degrees celsius, I think that's a pretty good tradeoff

january used to be the coldest month, it not unusual now to get snow in march!, the seasons have shifted because of global warming.
cant wait for the march video when you are soooo cold, and fed up with all the rain, and just praying for one dry day, yooull get bored of squishing in mud soon enough, then you'll be a proper brit!

Sorry, somehow this has posted twice.
Like everyone else has said, this is very mild weather. Plus central London is always a bit warmer than the outskirts. We haven't really got into the minus numbers yet. When I lived in an old building in a flat over a shop the water in the pipes froze when the temperature dropped to -15C. Thankfully they thawed without bursting.
Also if the council doesn't anticipate this the roads, pavements and external steps will be ice rinks. Not all ice is obviously visible. This also means buses cannot go up or down steep hills or slopes and routes can be cut short or they just don't run. British transport systems can never cope with any weather that is hotter or colder than moderate.

This has been an unusually warm January. There is normally ice or snow for about half of the month although London is always a couple of degrees warmer than the countryside. February can also be very cold. March has strong winds and April will be fairly wet. As to May onwards, that is already your field of expertise....

This has seriously been the mildest winter I can remember having. A couple of years ago, we had major major snowfall in March, so I wouldn't write it off yet - who knows what might happen in the next few months. the short days is what does it for me, though, and we're definitely getting longer evenings now, so that's a plus, at least.

So far winter has been very mild (and wet in places). We seem to have started with he storms now too although they generally affect us further north than down in the south.
Statistically we’re more likely to have snow at Easter than Christmas (despite what cards have you think) so still plenty of time yet. I’ve seen snow mid April before so it can happen pretty late into the year. Plenty of winter to come - it’s only mid Jan and we usually get colder end of Jan into Feb (mind, we did have a day last Feb where I went hiking in a tshirt and no jumper/jacket! 2 days Laster it was 0c during the day).
We don’t get cold cold like parts of the US/Scandinavia/Canada etc with lots of snow but it’s usually the fact it’s cold rain/sleet that gets a lot of us so down. I’d love loads of snow! It does get colder further north and out in the countryside too, London is a heat island. I’ve been out in about -5 so far this year doing Astro photography (rural Northumberland). Like you say, clear skies in winter = cold and often beautiful frost. Clouds usually mean weather coming in from the west which is kept warmish by the sea. And rain.
