In the UK there is no such thing as "Jay Walking" people are free to walk (and take their life in their hands) when they want unless pedestrians are specifically excludes as on motorways.
I don't think you need to prepare yourself for the cold in Winter in London but what you do need to prepare yourself for is the darkness. Come November/December you'll be getting up in the dark, going to work in the dark, leaving work in the dark (sunset is just after 3.30pm). On overcast drizzly days we're lucky if we see about 4-5 of semi daylight, and rain that can go on for days and days at a time. That's the killer!
This is absolutely true, it’s the darkness not the cold which is the depressing thing about winters in this country. Those lovely long summer days you just experienced unfortunately become very short winter days. It’s just geography - we’re further north than you probably realise.
There is lots to do in London with festivals, museums and concerts etc, but what so many people don’t mention is the sporting opportunities. Multiple football games, Tennis, Rugby, rowing, athletics etc etc.
About the weather, it's not that it gets very cold because it doesn't and snow is quite rare in London, lucky to have snow maybe once or twice each winter. What makes British winters horrible is the damp, dull and overcast weather. Sometimes in winter you don't see the sun for weeks and it's damp and cold, not freezing but cold.
It's not the temperate that makes winter so bad, it's the continues grey sky. It makes for a dull day and eventually get's you down. Not seeing the Sun for 3 months effects you in a weird way.
Luckily, we don't have extremely low temperatures in the winter BUT it's a different kind of cold. Nowhere in the UK is more than 75 miles from the sea so, whichever way the wind blows, the air is always damp. The cold damp creeps into you in the winter which is why so much of our traditional food is stodgy and warming. By the time we get to the end of next March, you'll understand exactly what I mean. BTW, congratulations on being brave enough to flee that sun-blasted hellhole filled with the worlds most lethal flora and fauna (and to think they call it "the lucky country"!).
Actually being colder would be better because its dryer and the clothing is really made for cold dry weather. It's when its 0 - 1 degree Celsius and the rain is coming sideways..
I have heard other Australians complain about the internet speed. Mine is 200 Mbps in Essex. Just a note, as others have said, there is no Jaywalking not an offence in the UK. The only places you cannot walk or ride a bicycle is a Motorway. Great video.
No such thing as jaywalking in the UK. People were here before cars. Pedestrians have just as much right to use the road as any other road user. Of course, cars will kill a pedestrian so pedestrians are forced to give way to cars even though the pedestrian may have the right of way. Also, there is no general law that says you have to drive on the left. It's only a convention and the law you may actually break if you drive on the right is that of "driving without due care and attention". As an example, if there isn't a footpath, pedestrians are encouraged to walk on the right-hand side of the road.
Got friend who works for BT (British Telecom) and he went to Australia to liaise about a big joint project and he was amazed/appalled to see they were still using equipment in the exchanges that had been phased out in the UK 30+ years ago.
Health care in the UK is not free, we pay for it through our taxes. The plus side is that, unlike the US, we don't pay for it while we are actually bleeding all over the floor.
hano verian lol yes that’s true but even if it is through your taxes, it is not only for you but everyone so even the less fortunate can get aid. If that’s true, that’s the main purpose of why we envy it, tons of homeless and others would rather suffer through their pain than actually go to the hospital. The stories get ridiculously crazy. The US rather tax us for basketball arenas than healthcare for everyone, it’s sad.
@@downsman1 It is free if your poor and have no money though. That is the difference. If you are on low income and do not pay taxes then it's still free and you're not discriminated against.
Lloyd Francis You forget that private medical insurance is also available, if you don't want to wait for non urgent treatment. And because all the basics are covered (very well) by the NHS, insurance is actually affordable. A generally healthy 30 year old will pay just a few pounds a mont, unlike the states where similar cover would take a significant chunk of your salary.
You mentioned The Tube. Did you know it was the first underground system in the world beating the French equivalent by 30 years. You will then be able to dazzle your friends with many little known interesting facts about London.
Ahhh, the internet! Where I live in Turkey (Med. coast) I get exactly the same speeds as you were getting in Sydney. In fact currently in the evenings my download speed is so low that even my speed test does not work. I pay for 16Mbps but you are only guaranteed 4Mbps.

I'd imagine Sydney would have had the ornate victoriana architecture at one point. Just like Melbourne - which has managed to keep the odd building of two. Britain has always been pretty reckless in preserving old architecture - I guess Australians were more so.

Anna Knight no.... renting in Britain is generally terrible. And most landlords don’t want pets. It’s hard. Doable, but not typically a no questions issue. I’d say 1-2 out of every day properties are pet friendly. And even then, that’s out of the total 10. Not all of them are affordable...
