Amen - Complete Crookedstar Multi Animator Project

After four years, its time to publish this project. It’s been great to work with so many people on this project, those who stayed through the whole time, those who joined and had to drop and those who came in to help get us across the finish line. Some of these parts were created back in 2018, I’m so glad we finally get to present them. I am proud of what we were able to create, and it wouldn’t have been possible without every contribution.
Amen was conceptualized as a character study for Crookedstar, in particular his relationship with his faith, and with grief. The script and final presentation of this project, while compatible with canon material, is not perfectly accurate to canon. Instead the challenge I proposed with this song was to depict an emotionally compelling retelling of his story, with the purpose of capturing the complexity of his grief and the tragedy of loss.

Spoilers for Crookedstar’s Promise following:
For those not familiar Crookedstar, or Crookedjaw, was born Stormkit, and in an accident breaks his jaw resulting in a lifelong disability, for which his mother cruelly renames him Crookedkit as a punishment. He is visited by a cat in his dreams named Mapleshade who promises him that he can become leader, if he will sacrifice everything else. He endures a great deal of loss, his father, mother, leader, wife and two daughters at birth, and eventually his brother and his third daughter in her childbirth, all seemingly in events beyond his control and at times seemingly because of his actions. Eventually he learns the cat who promised him leadership was not from Starclan at all, but a vengeful spirit who tried to break his heart with a lie to separate himself emotionally from those close to him, as punishment for something his ancestors did generations ago. He breaks ties with Mapleshade and has to learn to become close with those he has left and to reconcile with the grief he has for those he has lost.
This project follows his experiences starting with his appointment as deputy, and with the death of his father. He begins to experience a spiritual search within himself, whether the stories he was taught as a child are true, whether he is making the right choices in life, whether the ambitions he has are worth the bargain he has made. When his mate Willowbreeze falls ill after the birth of their kits his faith reaches a crisis point, and in desperate emotion he runs from camp to demand from the stars if his suffering is enough. Grief takes over his life for a time, until he recognizes his surviving daughter needs her father.
Amen was written by Joe Keogh, (vocalist of UK indie rock band, Amber Run) to commemorate his grandfather’s passing. “I wrote this song as the eulogy I wish I’d read for him about how I really felt.”

Fun fact: in the German version, Crookedjaw is renamed Stripedstar at his leader ceremony by Shellheart, who says his old name caused him enough grief.

adopting that into my personal canon immediately. i love how he didn't go back to stomstar, either, because that was the name rainflower picked. he deserves to have a name completely separate from her, and chosen by his father, who loved him unconditionally like a parent should

Oh yeah, it says in the German version of Bluestar's prophecy that StarClan changed his name because they thought he'd suffered the name enough, not Crookedstar's Promise. Still, glad you like it.
@@akarionxi Also because of translation issues, Brokentail becomes Browntail at his ceremony (where Raggedstar says he has grown to become sleek-pelted in contrast to his broken tail) and Hailstar is mistakenly called Cheerstar, as in, translating hail as not the weather but the thing people do to celebrate leaders. So, uh, yeah, hope you like those fun facts too.
WHY IS THIS NOT IN THE ENGLISH VERSION?!?
The ending where Silverstreams spirit appeared and brought a grieving Greystripe with his kits broke me. I feel so bad for all of them.
Wait was Crookedstar still alive when Graystripe went to Riverclan? I thought Leopardstar was leader by then.

@@AlexHarrier interesting! I was pretty young when I first read the books so I probably got my facts jumbled up. Looking back I remembered I had gotten Tigerclaw and Darkstripe mixed up on which was the bigger bad somehow, so it’s entirely possible I misremembered Leopardstar being leader when Graystripe joined.

Another fun fact! Ever noticed how Stormkit, Silverstream's son, has the same name as Crookedstar originally had? I don't think that's a coincidence.

Survivors guilt is screwed sideways, and Crookedstar is an *amazing* representation of that, especially when amazing hosts and artists get ahold of him and show us the talent this community never runs out of.

oh my god the result of this MAP is so emotional and a masterpiece, I was eating and now there is tears on my potatoes...the credit scene is incredible I got chills when Oakheart appears, then when graystripe arrives the feels are so strong wow The thumbnail is also amazing, the meaning of the maple leaves is so powerful.

I am literally in the same situation rn there are tears in my beans that ending sequence where GrayStripe walked in the back made me *bawl*
People praise the ending sequence (and rightfully so) but for me it is at 2:53 when the feels hit.
Crookedstar is at his lowest in this moment, feeling the weight of his pain, of his loss, seemingly unable to find hope. That is until Silverkit notices him, and even though she's too young to understand the extent of his despair she knows that he's sad, and offers him comfort. Up until this point he saw her as an extention of his dead mate, but when he looks down and sees the love in her eyes when she looks at him, he finally feels happy again; he feels as if there's some more hope left after all.
And in my opinion, this scene makes the ending sequence even more impactful.
when silverkit came up to crookedstar at the stream and nuzzled up against him I broke down crying. oh my god. every artist did SO well building up to that moment. it goes from this heart-wrenching hopelessness at all the loss he's gone through, to the realization that he still has people to live for. there is so much raw emotion there. amazing work to everyone who participated
me too. i just straight up bawled knowing what was going to happen to her. ugh this project was so good
OOOOOHUUUUGHHH, the grief and emotion captured in this is absolutely stunning!!!!! crookedstar is my absolute FAVORITE cat, his strength and ability to retain his empathy and humility after everything he went through is so incredible. GOD, AND THAT END!!!!! all of his loved ones gathering, and silverstream meeting him one last time to bring greystripe and the kits BROKE me. well done to everyone that was apart of this, and thank you for bringing together so many amazing artists to create this.
The fact that you can see Silverstream saying "Daddy?" when she calls to him in the credits is heart wrenching
2:42 gave me chills. His frustration and grief just pours out of him
I want to discuss how this project covers subtlety. A lot of pitfalls I see works fall into are the lack of it, that you need to show the bodies or the characters dying directly to leave an impact. While there is some of this here, most of it is subtle, raw emotion and expressions on display. My favorite parts have to be near the end. Crookedstar looking off while Silverstream leaves the clan, scared but uncertain, sent chills down my spine. The credits scene too.. gosh… just had me tear up from the pure raw emotion that Silverstream leading Greystripe through the reeds had. Excellent, phenomenal work. I couldn’t have asked for more from a project about a loving father’s grief. ❤️

What most I love about this MAP it's is about Crookedstar and his grief but not his abuse. Is so fresh and calm to finally see something of him, can enjoying a map of his life withoutt seeing how his mother or Mapleshade mistreat him. One of the best 2022 maps, without a doubt
There's something so surreal about watching all of these beautiful parts come together after all this time. I've only been following this project for a couple of years myself, but it was wholeheartedly worth it. All the talent and dedication that went into creating this is obvious. Everything down to the credits is just absolutely phenomenal. And, to be completely honest, it even got me to tear up a little. Amen.

Jesus fucking Christ, I just saw this for the first time, THIS MORNING. It broke my heart and made me cry, but you're saying this has been a W.I.P for a long time.

2:52 This was my favorite part. You can just tell that Crookedstar tries to hide his feelings from his Clanmates, as he feels responsible for them. Now that he's alone, all his frustration and grief just come pouring out. Plus, the background just really adds to it.

Everyone did a PHENOMENAL job working on this Map, but I gotta praise the outro here, because it just killed me. How, without words, the implications of what happened off-screen are clearly shown, how the picture stays in motion with all the different characters interacting with each other when the moment demands it, the atmosphere in general and just argh. I love it.
Once again, everyone did an amazing job on this map, I love each part individually for what it brings to the point where choosing just one favourite is hard. Well done everyone

I was watching this again and had a painful realization at the end. @3:09, when Silverstream walks off, Crookedstar didn't know it but that would be the last time he ever saw his daughter. It hit me on my second watching but now, on my third watch, it's making me so incredibly sad
This video was amazing, all the years waiting for it to come out were 100% worth it!
This genuinely has to be one of the first projects that has made me cry, its absolutely stunning and encapsulates the grief and pain he felt watching many of his loved ones pass on. Everyone here did amazing and the music choice was divine as well! Amazing job!

Crookedstar is probably my favorite character and he has been since i was young and first reading through the series. His story breaks my heart but i love it dearly.

Crookedstar is one of my absolute favorite characters; he goes through so much grief but never grows bitter or let that stop him from caring for other cats. Mapleshade is such a popular character, so it's interesting to see her take more of a backseat in this storyline. She really is nothing but an abuser and a curse to Crookedstar, and I feel like that part of her story doesn't get mentioned much compared to her novella. But anyway!!!
Everyone's parts turned out so amazing!! I've said already in the discord, but I love the transitions between parts and the color palettes really help harmonize the story beats. It can sometimes be really difficult to make a personal ballad kind of animation sequence - in old 90's animated films, it mainly depicts scenes of a single singing character standing or walking alone introspectively - but this MAP has a lot of energy and vibrance to it!! It really builds up to that emotional climax where Crookedstar screams at the sky, and then the scenes with Silverkit/paw/stream take it back down to earth. Really glad I got to animated potato baby Silverkit, lol - I love her 💖💕

He was the only cat who suffered lot of tragedies and doesn't lose faith in starclan almost like GrayWing, I loved the 2:38 - 2:50 part! and the ending gorgeous
it took me a couple of rewatches to notice Graystripe was animated jumping across the rocks in the background of the credits. The attention to detail is absolutely incredible!!
I freaking BAWLED reading Crookedstar’s Promise. His whole story is just so heartbreaking. The guy can’t catch a break

(3:50) I was so confused about who was crossing the river and I kept thinking 'Is that Goosefeather? No, he's dead by now.' Then after a closer and even closer look, I realized it was Greystripe with Stormkit and Featherkit and I started crying.
I'm really late but Crookedstar has been and always was my favourite character and this map, which ive been watching over and over for like 2 years now, brings me so so much joy that other people get to see his sorta story too (even if its not completely accurate to canon), especially through such a lovely MAP.

This has got to be hands down one of the most beautiful M.A.P.s this community has ever created. In terms of the animation and the story its telling. Crookedstar is such an interesting character and this is such a wonderful study of his life and struggles. Great job to everyone who took part!!!
Oh my gosh. I'm not even that emotional but the outro really brought tears to my eyes, especially when Silverstream introduced Graystripe and her kits to Crookedstar. The way each character appeared was just so cool and unique! I don't know how to describe it! Seeing his family comfort him was just so heart warming! Amazing job, as always! ^^

Honestly, Crookedstar is one of the best characters to grace this series.
Speaking both as a huge animation fan and as someone who has experienced a lot of profound grief and loss, you should all be SO proud of this project.
The ‘for leaving me here’ part broke my heart. I’ve rewatched it over and over, so well animated in its subtlety and emotion

I'm so happy that this project is complete after years of hard work; it's amazing to see how much passion everyone put into this map! Crookedstar deserved so much better, being manipulated from the start and going through so much pain. Thank you for bringing this wonderful concept to life; all the animators are incredibly talented (such intense, perfect emotions!) and I was honored to participate! Everyone's dedication sure payed off and it's absolutely phenomenal.

I love CrookedStar so much. My dad died when I was young and I was emotionally @bu$3d by my mother. I went through some stuff that I wouldn’t ever wish on anyone. I know many people have it worse as well. CrookedStar’s life made me cry. He lost so much, and I felt like I related to him. He felt like he’d never be loved, but he was loved. These fictional cats are really good at touching the heart.
The way the lighting brightens when silverkit rubs on him and he smiles
I'm straight up crying watching all of this - this was a really well made map and the song was so emotional. Crookedstar really went through a lot and yet he still stood through it all. Definitely saved this video on my favourite MAPs playlist!

i hardly ever cry when watching maps, but this really made me cry. crookedstar is a wonderful character and i'm so glad more maps are coming out with him. that being said, everyone here did a wonderful job and it was well worth the wait!

This map was so incredibly heartfelt! I don't often see a lot of focus on Crookedstar's relationship to Willowbreeze and his daughter, but he really was as good of a dad as he could be. 🥺🥺 The credits scene especially hit me in the heart!!

I've been waiting for this map for so long, but I would have never expected it to be this beautiful and gut wrenching!! Crookedstar is such an underrated character, and one of my favorites, so of course, he has a special place in my heart
Someone needs to answer for this because I have been absolutely SOBBING over this map, I really bond with crookedstars story and this map perfectly captures all the emotion and grief he really went through- you can see it in every frame, amazing job to every animator here- stunning work💜
It’s so very beautiful! I also found CrookedStar’s death super sad, saying he was the last to die out of everyone he truly loved and held close.
I must say that I hold a fond place in my heart for this MAP. I found the call for it around the same time I lost my mom in 2020, and the song is just perfect for those of us who are grieving. Seeing this MAP finished has me crying at my desk. Well done to all of the participants! Y'all did an amazing job.

Was fighting back tears the entire time and then the ending animation got me. What a beautiful map, one of my favorites that have come out recently.
This... this is why I can say this series affected my childhood in a big way, there were so many lessons and I can say I grew emotionally with the characters; they taught me sympathy. This one had me in tears, the art was beautiful and the music was perfect for it. Thank you guys for bringing back part of my childhood in such a touching way.

This is such a beautiful and thoughtful project! I really admire your and the participants' dedication to seeing this project through even as time went on. The end sequence was particuarily gorgeous and a tear jerker haha. Definitely a new favorite MAP.

This MAP made me cry so much. The song is not about feelings at all, but mixing it with the unbereable feelings of Crookedstar gives it a super sad feel.
This map has no right. I’m sobbing. The ending-my heart, it’s breaking. Crooked did not deserve everything he went through. His story really impacted me. I forgot about Silverstream, and I was like “what omg she’s the daughter of Crooked,” when I read CrookedStar’s novella.
Been here since the MAP announcement. So wonderful to finally see it completed! I can’t believe I cried. Thanks to everyone who worked on this project and didn’t let it become lost. This is beautiful. A+ description on the video as well; that part is very much appreciated.
This is easily one of my favorite MAPs ever. It is so beautiful and I love Crookedstar so very much. Also that ending sequence where I believe Silverstream says "hey dad" to introduce him to her kits is so sad. Crookedstar had such a sad life and it was portrayed beautifully here. Good job to all the animators!

That ending sequence made me cry for the first time in years. Beautifully animated, perfectly timed and choreographed. I thought I was gonna make it through the whole video in one piece but when those little ghost kittens came in I choked up and then when Silverstream led Graystripe to her dad I totally broke. Nothing has made me this emotional in long time. Y'all got me fucked up!
I watch these MAPs having knowing nothing about the Warriors series, it's like watching an animated series all on it's own. This was an amazing project (holy cow 4 years??) everyone that's taken part should be so proud of themselves, there were some very technically challenging shots here and it put tears in my eyes. Very well done!

Crookedstar is one of my favorite characters and imo he has the saddest story this map makes me cry each time I watch it

Aw poor crookedstar I love him and this song everytime I hear it I start to tear up
Through the whole thing, I was keeping tears back, then the end scene started, and it got me. Now I'm crying curled up in a ball in the corner of my room. Props to everyone who had a part in making this beautiful MAP
I honestly think that Crookedstars Promise is my favorite book in the series. Followed closely by Tallstars Revenge.

Loved this.. so much! All the animators were amazing and the emotions and everything portrayed was absolutely stunning. Crookedstar’s promise is one of my favourite super editions alongside tallstar’s revenge, and this map was just beautiful in every way! 🐺
Literal chills. Every artist did an incredible job at portraying the heart wrenching story being told through such a beautiful song. The artistry in this project blows me away. Was every bit as incredible as I expected it to be when I saw the call 4 years ago! So worth the wait

And you can see Greystripe appearing in the background getting closer before she introduces them to Crookedstar-
And the freaking "Hey dad" lip sync I caught on Silverstream.
That was beautifully animated. I can't get over this project, it came together perfectly.
