Really tired of the narrative that USPS "loses money". We don't say "the military lost $1T" we say "it cost $1T". It's a service that costs money to operate.
Especially since it only "loses money" because Republicans passed laws that required it to fund retirement packages for 70 years. What a coincidence that they force it to lose money, and then point at the money loss as a reason to sell it to the billionaires that bribe them.
I mean that's wrong. USPS is a state owned commercial actor with a fiduciary responsibility. That means they're expected to be self sufficient and not be a net loss for tax payers (as opposed to the military that isn't a commercial actor). My vote is that the prices for people who live in bumfuck nowhere obviously should pay more for the services than they do now. Why should grandpa or some hillbilly pay the same as someone who lives in a suburban or Central life? It doesn't make sense because it's not like you're forced to live in nowhere-land.
@@kaingatesthey should pay the same because daily mail delivery is a federally guaranteed right to all citizens. The Postal Service had to "pre-fund" all of its responsibilities for retiree health benefits, 75 years from now, according to the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) of 2006. This does not need to be done by any other company. Its purpose was to portray USPS's financial situation as dire. The USPS privatization proposal was initiated a long time ago.

That's not entirely correct and is a common misconception. The USPS follows most of the same rules as any other corporation that has a pension fund. The 75-year thing is only a calculation of the costs over 75 years, not actually pre-funding for all of those years. The Civil Service pension does the same thing. The USPS even defaulted on a number of mandates of the 2006 PAEA so it's hard to apply full blame to the PAEA if the USPS hasn't even followed all of it. The USPS OIG has some good reports on what made the difficulties happen and the #1 culprit is that the USPS is forced by law to invest its pension funds only in U.S. Treasury Securities which are low risk but also very low return and don't provide anywhere near enough supplemental funding to the pension that it needs to stay solvent. This investment requirement is completely controlled by Congress and results in more and more operational funds being diverted to fill the gaps that any other state, local, private or even most federal pensions can supplement with investment returns. If the pensions had been allowed to be diversely invested from the very start, the entire pension fund would be around $1.2 trillion in 2022, a surplus of around $800 billion. Alternately, if Congress had released the shackles on USPS pension investments along with the 2006 PAEA, the Postal Service Retiree Health Benefits Fund (PSRHBF) would be doing fine now due to the increases in the stock market and would in no danger of going insolvent like it is now expected to be depleted in 2031.
@@IGR8691 Thank you for the enhanced explanation! Part of the reason for the requirement to invest in T-Bills is to ensure safety of the pension fund, and another reason to prevent any other investment is because it invites corruption by granting access to Wall Street banks to yet another section of the Federal government.
Its sad that as a non American the only shocking part of hearing about another school shooting was that it was a girl this time and not that there was a school shooting
Yeah, that was the most shocking thing for me too as an American, but I also heard that this occurred yesterday without getting any details about the shooter
I work for the USPS, and hearing these schmucks talk about privatizing it infuriates me. We were told for the holiday season that there would be no seasonal hiring while our facility is already lacking the needed workers we have people work 6 12 hr days and packages are still being left in the unloading area due to the lack of workers. None of these billionaires can imagine the scale of how much mail is moved through a facility in 24hrs
Further, the USPS isn't supposed to be profitable, and it doesn't help that the man currently running it has vested business interests in making sure that it fails so then private parcel delivery services make more money. We're going to be stuck with DeJoy for another 4 years at a minimum.
their pockets are filled with 'donations' from those very entities that compete with USPS, they want to carve up the business for their friends, after our tax dollars put it altogether...
Dude, USPS going private is an absolutely horrid idea. Let’s not forget that Amazon, FedEx and UPS all use the USPS for last mile delivery. USPS becoming profit motivated means my grandparents don’t get mail anymore.
literally none of the private companies go to certain places in the US that the USPS is legally required to go. Y'all really think those private companies will pay for donkeys and small planes to get to places like the bottom of the grand canyon (yeah there's a whole town down there) and iced over towns in Alaska, not to mention literally anyone in a slightly rural place who wants mail delivered to their door rather than miles away
In the Uk Royal Mail has been sold off, and is now owned by someone who lives in a foreign country and the service is terrible, 1st class post is now 1-3 days instead of 1 day, they closed rural post offices, and prices have sky rocketed.
I really despise the push to privatize every aspect of the government. Just a bunch of already rich assholes trying to grab more money, while driving the cost of living higher for everyone. Multiple lifetime's worth of money and they still won't be happy because they want ALL the money.
And what happens when a massive percentage of the population are no longer useful to the rich due to automation? We are becoming increasingly disposable, and ever more brainwashed by the elites pushing propaganda with algorithms.
Privatizing the USPS would also really hurt people who rely on medications being delivered directly to them and would likely impact people who receive financial aid via mail.
Canadian here. While I can't speak for Germany, here in Canada, our guy Trudeau has been a liberal-party Prime Minister for a decade. The guy before him was a conservative, and was in power for about a decade, and the guy (technically two guys, one a much shorter reign) before that was liberal in power for a decade, and before that, another two conservatives in power for a little over a decade. So here in Canada, our guys' time is just up because he's been in power for a decade, and we're sick of him. We want 'shiny and new' until were sick of that one, and want the next one. Once he got in, he dropped that promise like a hot potato, because now it serves him well. I never voted for him again after that.

As someone from a (European) country whose postal service got privatized in the early 90s, don't do it. Service just got worse and worse, postal workers totally overworked to the point where there's little difference to Amazon delivery drivers, And all because the money they were trying to save cause you know, privatized companies need to show their shareholders how much money they make.
Sadly, that's already the case here. Congress made it so the postal service has to pay for the retirement of future employees (crazy bullshit that no other agency or service has to do) and has made it so the USPS has to "become profitable" in order to fulfill that. They've been cutting back on staff and just making it impossible for it to work like it used to.

Anyone whose gone to college is also well aware of how the fees increase each and every year for every little thing. A fee for each building, a fee for the cafeteria use, a fee for your using the library, a lab fee, computer fee, gym fee, cyber security fee, parking fee, heat fee, I mean if they can imagine it being a tacked on 10 dollar fee they absolutely will. My last semester my fees alone topped 1200 dollars. That's not even for dorm use, food through the school, or the classes I took. I took 2 seminars and 1 full time class and that tacked on an extra 5k. I don't live on campus, that's the saving grace for me.
@@tearainey1 Agreed, at my school we saw our tuition go up by nearly a third from one semester to the next because the athletics department had renovated the basketball stadium and expected ticket sales to be the same after it was finished compared to before they started. Their math was off by several million dollars so students, of whom most never watched a single game, had to pick up the difference. They didn't lower it when it was paid off, and they didn't fire the guy with poor math skills, they promoted him. Costs just kept increasing. My first year there, in-state tuition was less than $800 a semester. My last year,(2010) it was pushing past $2500 and it wasn't like our facilities or professors saw any of that increase. Our football stadium increased seating and a couple of vanity buildings that never held classes were built. They also closed down some programs, like foreign languages, so the quality of the education offered went down. They still send me emails asking for donations.

They need to make it mandatory that if you use AI you must disclose it. Obviously someone can lie but if it’s caught that they did and didn’t say so it should be removed. There’s so many vids just meshed together to make stories for content and it’s working
I think it should be illegal for your images, video, music to be used AI to repurpose (train) it. AI relies on content already created by artist/author/musicians. This isn't fair. Nobody asked for this.
How the hell did it take YEARS for someone to do anything about that police station? They should all be charged with infringement of rights. It can't happen with every single arrest, yet there's still a "good" officer in the building.
Or preferably be on the lawful use of the 2nd Amendment, for their Treason, always violating the Constitution, and forcing citizens to fight it in a court of law, when the Forefathers already had a solution.

@@bobby7703 I think that's a dumb reason for privatizing it. Wouldn't it be better to force corporations to actually make things that last and are repairable, rather than make it harder to get things altogether?
@@bobby7703 how on earth did you get to the conclusion that we should privatize it because it's not good for the environment?? Privatization ALWAYS makes things WORSE from an environmental standpoint you silly Billy
@@bobby7703 You're completely ignoring the rural areas where only USPS serves because they are required to if they went private they either would deliver to those people or raise the cost of it by an extreme amount
Because people are dumb. They have blinders on, and only see the one positive outcome that makes a difference - "Lower Taxes". If the postal service is private, government doesn't pay for it, and your taxes go down, and the people cheer, unwise to the fact that the new privatized postal service will cost them more to utilize per year than the tax money they will save. People are dumb.
The idea of privatizing the US Postal Service is likely unconstitutional. In article one section 8, it states that the United States Congress has the power to create postal services. It is described as the service that the US government provides citizens. This idea originated with Benjamin Franklin as he was thinking as the United States expand we need to have better connection connections to create and build our unity as a nation. Profit is never, and was never the purpose of the US Postal Service
They should go a step further put the highway admin back under the postal service as it originally was. Then people can complain how highways are unprofitable. And how dumb the arguement of a for profit USPS is.
So, hypothetically, Congress would have the ability to privatize USPS because it is a power of Congress to create one and not a right of the people to have one. Now, Trump’s issue actually comes in with the fact that most Republicans representatives would actually be the ones to suffer if they privatized USPS. As Phil said, they would likely just stop delivering to rural areas because it’s not profitable, so if you live in a rural area then you’ll have to drive into the closest city center to pick up or drop off your mail. New York, LA, Chicago, Austin, Minneapolis, and Atlanta likely won’t see any difference in their major carriers walking down their street every day. The rural parts of Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona, Alabama and whatnot other states that may not even have an international airport would be hit the hardest Trump would have to get Congress to privatize USPS and with the slim majority in both chambers, way too many of them would never win an election again if they signed off on it
I work in law enforcement and earlier this year I responded to an active shooter incident in a public space. We started looking to see if anyone had posted video of the incident and suspects on social media. Almost immediately (literally less than 45 minutes later) an account posted monetized and edited videos titled “I was at the -- shooting”. It was a person sitting at a desk and talking about how “they saw it”. The point is, a tragedy was immediately monetized for views & money. It isn’t just the big media corps trying to take advantage of other people’s trauma anymore, it’s everyday people too.

How the hell did it take YEARS for anyone to do ANYTHING about that police station!? They all need to be charged for infringement of rights. It can't happen to every single arrest, and there still be a "good" officer in that building.
Portraying the postal service as a business that loses money is propaganda. The USPS is a public service that costs money. It's not meant to earn profit.
The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) of 2006 required that the Postal Service “pre-fund'' 100 percent of its retiree health benefit liabilities, 75 years into the future. NO OTHER COMPANY is required to do this. It was made to make USPS finances look terrible. The plan to privatize USPS was set in motion long ago.
This comment needs to be up higher. This act is the SINGLE reason the USPS looks as though it is limping along. Without this law, the USPS would have continued to be the only governmental agency actually making a profit. This fact needs to be re-iterated in every news story about the Postal Service.
I can't believe that this remains as unknown as it is. John Oliver did a whole episode on it, and I believe Stewart did back on the Daily Show, plus there has been some good print reporting about it. I don't feel like I'm super tapped into the news, yet I know this detail...how come more people dont?
The best part is that no company wants to do what the USPS does. Postal service is not profitable. Package delivery? Very much so. Postal delivery? Very much not profitable. The USPS will always cost more than it can ever make because letters just aren't a profitable market. So if they privatize it, no company will actually take up the spot. The USPS would go bankrupt and then everything goes to shit. Actually now that I think about it they probably wanna do it just to prevent mail in ballots
Why is it always the services that normal people use that they want cut? The defense department hasn't passed an audit since they started auditing them seems like the prime candidate to tighten their belt with.
@@emmanuelhtrevinoyep they feel it and I just never understood the preference of the right boot or the left boot on your neck when it’s clearly an issue of the wealthy elite bribing politicians at the expense of our livelihoods.
If you could see the stock portfolio of most politicians it's likely all medicine and defense contractors. They don't wanna hurt their own pocketbooks. Hell some politicians have direct family in these companies.
Phil already said it, but I wanna repeat: as a government agency, the USPS is bound by federal law to deliver mail REGARDLESS of the cost of doing so. No weather condition, cost-benefit analysis, or political climate is an excuse for the denial of service for the USPS, whereas it IS for all currently existing private mail carriers. Private carriers will only ever take mail as far as it is profitable to do so, which is usually to the local post office because THEY are legally obligated to make sure that mail gets where it's going regardless of the situation while Amazon and UPS are not. I'll say that again; a large portion of rural mail in the US is only able to be delivered at the current prices because that mail is being shipped to the local post office, NOT to your door. The only reason that mail is delivered is because federal law MANDATES the USPS deliver it, regardless of risk or cost. If all mail carriers were suddenly privatized, shipping costs would either jump up exponentially or the INDIVIDUAL would be responsible for collecting their mail from the nearest post office. And those changes would ALSO affect the pricing and service for people who currently get their mail delivered directly by private carriers, because not only do corporations take ANY excuse to raise prices, but suddenly your regular mail which is delivered by the USPS for dirt cheap will need to be delivered by a private carrier for profit. EVERYBODY loses in this scenario; individuals, corporations, and the government.
I wonder how Google got so much footage to train a video generation model this good? It couldn't be the largest video platform on the internet that they own, could it? The waiver that conveniently excludes Google because they already have permission covered in the blanket agreement you agreed to for posting videos? This will certainly remain a mystery!

That's a little misleading, Deputy PM is a ceremonial position that holds no authority. They answer questions at PM question time and chair the chamber when the PM is gone, that's it. In a minority government the second most important politician would be a different party leader who supports the minority government.

The rural parts of Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona, Alabama and whatnot other states that may not even have an international airport would be hit the hardest
Trump would have to get Congress to privatize USPS and with the slim majority in both chambers, way too many of them would never win an election again if they signed off on it
I mean we realistically ship enough items without having to subsidize the industry. Its not great for the environment
@@TheJttv At least in the example of highways their maintenance costs can seriously bankrupt governments and have alternatives.

Anything to keep the masses disenfranchised. Opens up avenues for corps to swoop in and take advantage of them. It's maddening really.
because it doesn't affect rich people that's why. we are already in a class war and the masses just don't see it yet but they feel it.

There would be literally zero benefits to privatizing the USPS. I've heard people all for it, but they don't understand what that means and it's infuriating. If the post office is suddenly concerned about profit, that means you have to pay to get your mail. That means everything that is shipped to your mailbox, bills, coupons, tax documents, even Grandma's Christmas cards. The price of stamps and shipping will shoot through the roof. The post office is already primarily self-funded and barely functioning, thanks dejoy, and only managing what it can because they don't have a choice. It's literally illegal for postal workers to strike. Make it a for-profit company and the service and efficiency will drop to hell. This shouldn't even be a conversation, the post office needs MORE government funding and attention, not less.

I was getting Jean-Claude Van Damme vibes
So as someone who works in the postal service under usps and ups per contracts. This is a horrifyingly scary thing for someone like me who still barely makes enough to live a life of some comfort. We also lost tons of money because we had to cut our contract with fed-ex per them not wanting to renew which hit us large. Us going private would hit us so hard that we would risk shutting down my work location even already. A huge thing that comes with mail is that the government can and will tax us for each package that isnt scaned by an already insanely small margine. My location already gets the least amount of mail out of evedyone but imhanine working a job where your job is charged for hundreds of pounds of mail not being scaned fast enough because your work force is alrwady struggling with employment of new people.
I love how you say "love yo face" but you don't know what I look like! I've been following you since 2009 and you've never seen meeee good sir!
As a veteran and an indian woman i feel like there are a lot of things to be afraid about these days, i appreciate you guys making the news understandable at least.
12:38 Did those glasses come with a van..?
Jump scare.

@phil
PLEASE
Cover the Mount Carroll Illinois POLICE murder story. JACKSON KRADLE
Why doesn't Trump cut the military, _instead_ of the postal service?? Oh yeah they are BOTH services, FFS!!
6:17 unfortunately the chasing down of young students by journalists looking to be first to a story has been an issue for decades.
I remember being in middle school (in the late 90’s) when my teacher was arrested. The school warned us about the news crews outside the school when we were released for the day. One crew was approaching my friend and I when my friend basically shamed them by yelling “why are you bothering children”.
Calling MKBHD an alleged speeding enthusiast is so funny
That golden retriever AI video from Sora.. that broke my brain for a second. Very psychedelic.
The way it morphed was insane. I think it had 3 tails for a split second. The 3rd being where an ear should be for like 1 frame.
