    It is interesting to learn about the emergency alert system. As someone who lives on the border of Los Angeles and Orange County and is not in the path of the current fires, I was not irritated when I received an unintentional evacuation alert today. It spread throughout the county. I'd rather get a text that means nothing to me than not receive one from someone who does.

    Don't ever underestimate fire. If they tell you to evacuate do it ASAP. Fire will outrun your car, it will jump roads and have the next streets ablaze before you get there. Those "embers" you hear about aren't just a few glowing hot bits, mixed with wind they are literally a blowtorch that ignite anything they touch. If you’re in a fire prone area, eucalyptus is a reeeeeally bad species to introduce. They probably already are, but consulting Australian firefighters would probably be a good idea.
      There’s no conspiracy here! Fire needs fuel and wind, it loves to go up hill like a freight train! California, It’s dry, it’s hilly, there’s high winds and a fuck tonne of fuel including eucalyptus which is incredibly flammable.
      Australia performs controlled burns before fire season, reduce the fuel, reduce the fire.

I remember calling my friends and family to ask if I should evacuate because I didn't know how severe the fire was. It resulted in me evacuating late and having to drive within feet of the fire to get out of the area. There NEEDS to be a way to inform everyone in a given area about the dangerous situation they are in so they can, hopefully, make the right call to evacuate.

      I guess the major pitfall for sirens is that deaf people would not be warned. But really, there should be multiple warning attempts through different avenues, so the maximum number of people can be reached no matter their life circumstances.

You could feel free to opt out, but oops no more roads or hospitals or police or firefighters for you. Obviously this can't work in practice, but it's interesting to think about.

    I work in drinking water regulations. And typically, especially in cities, fire hydrant water is coming from the drinking water system. Drinking water can only be produced so fast, what’s needed is increased storage. I’m not familiar with this system in particular, but it sounds like the issue was they didn’t have an over abundance of storage tanks, therefore they couldn’t keep up with the demand.

    • @turbot_
      @turbot_ 3 дні тому +13

      I think the issue is two fold. It's not just the availability of treated water, it's also the elevation. The tanks in the hills are used to maintain water pressure through gravity but the water needs to be pumped up there.

    • @TheCook80
      @TheCook80 3 дні тому +29

      Oh they had the tanks, firefighters emptied them and the problem is the pumps to the reservoirs can't keep up with having every firetruck in Los Angeles pulling water from the same section.

    • @annacynthia28
      @annacynthia28 3 дні тому +2

      @ Unless there were electrical issues with their pump stations it shouldn’t have been an issue. Systems have emergency procedures to provide generators or have generators onsite in the event of an emergency to keep pumps going. If that got interrupted then yes that could have also played a factor. But you still need treated drinking water to pump up there.

LA country funneled tens of millions into fraudulent homeless "charities" that do nothing for the homeless population while paying their own boards of trustees massive salaries to do absolutely nothing - the vast majority of these funds are pocketed or hoarded in the charity's investment accounts until they can legally be funneled out over time. this fraudulent spending was even increased during the last budget cycle, but fire prevention and emergency response got cut. emergency first responders budget got cut. they chose to spend in stupid, fraudulent places for moral appearances whilst cutting $17 million+ from life essential services. she's watching millions of people around her in Cali just sobbing in public from losing everything while fearing for their lives, so her anger is totally understandable. I'd be furious as well. they chose to defund police, and first responders for political reasons while blowing millions on fraudulent scams for appearances, leading to massive crime and now massive suffering and loss. everyone should grow a backbone and start holding the entirety of their govt accountable.

    I'm Australian, and much like California, we have a fire season. It breaks my heart to see those impacted in LA the same as it does when it happens here. However, what's worse is that at least here there's a unified response, and we don't have this political finger pointing while people lose everything from property to homes to lives and loved ones.
    Like California, we've also experienced the horror of more intense fires, more widespread fires, and increasingly fires starting outside the fire season. During climate change, the wet gets wetter, and the dry gets drier, and unfortunately, that means areas prone to drought or arid weather end up with more and more fires.
    The biggest differences between us unfortunately means more pain for Californians as:
    1. Australian cities and towns have lower populations and urban density, meaning an overall lower cost (even if the individual cost is still equally bad).
    And 2. Australian fire services have been funded and refined for decades, including top funding for real-time fire spreading algorithms/prediction models and decent consistent alert systems - these are not just locally and state funded but federally funded.
    Ultimately, shame on any politician that, instead of pledging assistance and heart-felt empathy to the victims, turned around and throws mud at their opponents in the hopes of gaining support, money or political capital. They are the ones who should experience the pain and loss that these sorts of fires bring.

    Phil didn't fully get into this but the smelt water issue is a complete lie. The only reason a handful (emphasis on handful) of hydrants have run dry is because the amount of water needed has exceeded their capacity to provide water. Not because there is a lack of water running to them. This fire is so big and so aggressive they just cant keep up and the existing infrastructure isn't sufficient to battle something like this.

    I love that people are blaming Democrats for the fires while I've sat under snow for a week with a Republican city council. They stopped plowing streets they plowed the highways but good luck getting to said highway with all the main streets unplowed; oh, and it's snowing again today.
    ...
    We've had a major bridge out for two years now because those taxes cuts don't come out of their paychecks it's our roads and former bridges that pay the price. Yes, according to the city council they are only clearing streets from 5am to 1pm to save money... Good thing too because they'll need that money as motorists who had to get to work have plowed into a lot of signs, we even have a downed street light.
    In conclusion STFU if your sentence starts with Republicans OR Democrats do ______... I’m sorry dude but snowplowing and the logistics of it are absolutely unrelated to fire planning and the mismanagement of LA due to democrat entrenchment.
      Just like how the Deep South got corrupted by being always right leaning, California has become corrupted.
      Now here’s the kicker: just buy snow tires.
      Or better yet, learn how to drive in the snow! That’s just a weather condition!
      I have no idea how you possibly think that “I’m bad at driving in the snow” = “ my city is mismanaged to the degree LA is” because in order for that to happen, you’d have to think “some snow on some roads” = “fires burning thousands of structures a day”

It was a farmer in Scotland that had been driving around all day with his tractor with a plow on the front clearing roads because the local council had ran out of road salt AND the snowplows got snowed in. I laughed and joked that it kinda looked like my Dad's tractor but couldn't be him because he wasn't long out of hospital due to a serious hart condition...and then I phoned my Dad. It freaking was him! He'd been out since 4am and was originally planning to just do the farm road and then a bit more to the main road for the neighbours but then just kept going 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

      @Windmelodie 2 дні тому +1

      I recently watched an expert talk about what amounts to the 3 stages of crisis "management" in everyday people. It basically boiled down to:
      1. Denial ("A fire? Well, it's not gonna come anywhere near me, so I'm fine, the firefighters will take care of it")
      2. (Social) Deliberation ("Hm, idk about evacuating, what about the others? Some of my neighbours left, should I go too? What should I take with me? Will I need my car?")
      3. Taking Action ("Okay, I'm gonna run, the fire is right there" OR they freeze and do nothing... OR they run out and help their neighbours evacuate and so on)
      And all of these stages and actions are pretty much normal in a social species such as humans. And unless you've not only trained but also experienced these emergency situations enough times, most people will end up going through those stages which may even cost them their lives due to not acting fast enough or ultimately freezing.

    Phil after you said 'stay safe out there' my autoplay autoplayed but I immediately came back to this video to say - that's the most sinister thing you've said in the 15 years I've been watching the news on this channel and I may or may not now feel afraid. thx!

    3:10 - I SWEAR TO ALL THAT IS HOLY IF SOMEONE USES THAT POOR FISH AS A SCAPEGOAT ONE MORE TIME--Sorry, I live in Northern Cali. Farmers and crap use that excuse all the time, "Oh, who cares about a little fish? It doesn't matter." IT MATTERS. It's an UMBRELLA SPECIES; by conserving that one tiny fish, we can conserve so much of our rivers, delta (You know, that area that produces most of the RICE in the US?), and other *very very delicate* environmental zones. I swear, every time I hear a politician talk about that fish they are talking absolutely out of their rear ends and just doing it for a voter grab instead of *actually* researching it. /end N.Cali rant

    Of course people would politicize a disaster. How utterly pathetic. God I hate humanity.

    I live near the Eaton area. So many of our family and friends have lost their homes. We were evacuated and are waiting to see when it will be safe to go back. It’s sad to see so many businesses lost. I’m so grateful my home is safe but I wonder how the community will rebuild in Altadena. Please all if you can support the local communities. It’s been heartwarming to see so many people offering help with water, masks, food even charging a phone. Stay safe out there friends.

      Because most of the country wants to pretend that climate change isn't happening. It's really hard to fix a problem you refuse to admit exists.

    Former wildland firefighter here who worked in Ventura for 5 years.. the worst fires always start around November-march and have always been at this time in this area due to the santa ana winds.. the real problem is the lack of controlled burns and proper brush removal. Im sure the drought doesn't help, but alot of this could have, at the very least, saved whole areas..

    Oh dang I didn't even think about the water tanks. I grew up in the hills and we had a pump house across the street from my house and a huge tank at the top of the hill. I don't think many people are familiar with how that works though so I understand the confusion.

    I worked in the cell phone industry when that nationwide test text went out. The people who came in leading up to it screaming about how 1. They don’t consent and will sue us and 2. They know they are putting spyware on their phones was just wild.
    As for not getting the emergency alerts, it broke my heart when people would tell me they turned them off. Things like amber alerts. A little kid was abducted but you are more concerned about your dogs barking at the blaring siren from your phone. Just sickening. How much I wanted to make every person who said that feel like absolute crap.

    Where was United Healthcare when you need them to deny some unnecessary surgeries?

    Hearing the story about the hospital and doctor doing all this crazy shit to make profits sounded like what I imagine a brainstorm session would've been for the writers and producers of The Resident when coming up with storylines for the show. That's terrifying to hear it happen in real life, but also sounding way worse than a drama TV series playing out the same scenarios is insanity!

    it’s so insane to observe as our health system declines further & further. people are being given surgeries they DONT need, simply for profits, while others arent cleared for surgeries & treatments they *ABSOLUTELY NEED* , bc it’s unprofitable. i predict things will get far worse before they get better.

      why would a company ever do something that costs them money? of course they're going to do the procedures that will make them money. they would go under if they only did surgeries that didn't make a profit...

      @ brother… profits are made AFTER maintenance costs and salaries. this is EXTRA. profits are not what is used to maintain services at a company. it isnt costing them ANYTHING. they are going out of their way to abuse the public to reap EXTRA on top of EVERYTHING they already scalp us for. *get a grip.*

    • @249aaa
      @249aaa 2 дні тому +1

      @@bmans884 profits don’t include a business’s maintenance costs. it’s entirely extra money on top of what it takes to keep lights on and pay people. i cant imagine defending the people scamming us & scalping our wallets. yet here you are!

    One thing that people don't realize about Pumper Firetrucks is they can put out an insane amount of water, upwards of 2000gpm (7600lpm). So each truck has to hook up to a hydrant or draft water from a river, lake, or something because they will run dry in minutes if they go all out. When you start to think about that against how much a house uses in a minute you can see how too many trucks pulling on the mains at one time can cause large disturbances in the water system if you keep that up for too long.
