@moonlitlove an atheist, whether referring to Ricky Gervais specifically or anyone in general, is literally AND figuratively More down-to-Earth than a religious adherent.
Rich, famous people are treated like their gods so it’s SO refreshing to see them bumped down a peg. Love Ricky and love the British sense of humor, us Americans could learn a thing or two
Robert Downey Jr: Makes a comment about the show having sinister undertones. Proceeds to talking about sleeping with random female actresses. What a troll.
+StrokeMeYouInsolentHumanCuzIAmACat That's the joke. He was a bit uncomfortable with the Betty Ford/LA County Jail gag but he knew it was just a joke. The problem with a Brit standing in front of a room of Americans is that our humour is so deadpan that Americans can't tell if it is just a well constructed joke or being totally serious.
RavThunderbird Either way, Ricky Gervais has been around long enough that you know exactly what you're going to get when he goes on stage. Unfortunately, people can't realise that "television is like a bus: You pay your cable subscription (ticket), the bus goes along its route and if you're lucky it'll stop somewhere near where you live. It's not a taxi in that you dictate exactly where you want it to go"- Marcus Brigstocke. This is why I hate groups like the PTC with a passion.
RDJ: "now Im not trying to creep anyone out but where's Emma...?" and then turns the creep WAY up. You could can pretty much hear most of the stomachs in the room cringing at the same time.
NOTMYNAME.....only the weak willed, worthless millennials would've felt any type of way over what RDJ said, that was his objective, to point out how utterly retarded all of you inbred millennials are in his own unique way....🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻
Hahahahahahhahahaha Bruce Willis' fail was the highlight in my opinion. "Sometimes hollywood DSUH-UH does provide you with outrageous fortune" *brutally painful silence*
Haha. Loved every second of it! Steve Carell was hilarious here as well, natural comedian he is. Nice to see at least someone able to laugh at oneself like that.
Yeah, but how ironic is it that Robert Downey Jr complained about the joke made at his own expense, as being "mean spirited" or whatever, then he immediately goes into a long, diatribe of creepy jokes, where he makes a bunch of sexual insinuations about several female actresses trading sex for movie roles!
I like how Robert Downey Jr at around 9:00 was able to balance being a just as mean as Ricky without being weighed down by any of the wit and charm that help Ricky Gervais get away with it.
I fucking loved him for that! Everyone was so butthurt afterwards though :P It's funny because if he said those things at an English award show not many people would be offended, i guess our humor's different. Also around 45% of us are Athiest's xD
Jon has his own views that people may question, but he's a true comedian and a true American patriot. His era of The Daily Show helped me to understand politics from a very young age. Pointing out the corruption from both sides and the hypocrisy of so many people, while always remembering to be passionate but civil when discussing the issues. I know of no other news source that was as objective, and would have been easy for me to understand at the ages of about 10-14. I just went through social studies in 6th grade, it made me excited to learn about the government and how the country runs. Jon opened my eyes in a lot of ways, and he earned my respect.
Agree completely with you Jordan! Jon was a better "journalist" than most others pretending to be. He is a truly decent, intelligent and thoughtful human being.
"Riicky gervais golden globe reaction" is the title of the video i think, it has an interview where he said gervais wasn't funny that night,,gervais e-mailed him saying sorry if you were offended and he said he wasn't and they worked together on "life too short"
I guess we can add Robert Downsyndrome junior to the list of people that can’t take a joke ahahaha. Also I think he went all creepy like that to try and out do Ricky. It didn’t work so far as I can tell.
Although I appreciated rdj's gag, especially the punchline of giving the award to all 5 ladies innuendo, the timing felt so hypocritical after he'd just reprimanded Gervais. Perhaps rdj was taking it to the next level. Strutting in on his high horse, virtue signaling at Gervais' expense before turning in his best Harvey Weinstein impression.
With all due respect, RDJ is way overrated. He played a good superhero and all the sudden people are all over him. I've seem him in interviews, he's nothing more than a smart ass posing as something else. Basically an actor playing another actor. what else is new?
They realize that Ricky spices things up as no one else can, and gets people laughing, gets people watching. So, even with him being a little too honest, it's worth it in the end.
Boy was downey jr pissed, trouble with some actors, they think they're untouchable, ...betty ford clinic? yes, jail? yes, so what's the problem, a lot of other actors laugh at themselves
I've never seen anyone nervous who then goes on a ramble about a load of nonsense about how great he is and people(mainly women) owe their success to him, (full award version)
The best host these bullshit awards shows have ever had. They knew what they were getting when they asked him to host and he no doubt delivered on their expectations.
Craig Lee But sometimes acting transcends just “pretending.” Al Pacino is an example of a pure talent; his work in *The* *Godfather* movies is an integral part of that art..
I don't revere any celebrity. I like actors but I would never go out of my way to meet them, adore them, photograph them or dedicate any part of my life worshipping them.
You dont have to worship celebrities but you can and should appreciate actors' work. It's not an easy job to deliver a performance authentic enough to make people laugh or cry.
I'm genuinely fascinated by the reaction to Gervais' routine because it's philosophically about the line between humor and cruelty - the line between "laughing at" and "laughing with." It's like Mel Brooks' famous quote: "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die." Also it's interesting in terms of seeing how so much of whether a comedian succeeds with his audience is whether he's "won them over". He was a relative unknown in terms of hosting shows and so the audience didn't have affection for him that they'd have for say, Steve Martin or Billy Crystal. So much of getting people to laugh along with you is simply appearing likeable and I think Ricky was received coldly because he just went straight for the jugular without "warming the audience up."
good comment. gervais is in a league of his own in terms of being offensive, so it'd be difficult to imagine this act being well received by any comedian.
***** Well remember that all the people in the audience know each other or might have to work together in the future. So a lot of the awkwardness probably comes from being unwilling to be seen laughing at the expense of their colleagues even though they're laughing inwardly.
***** There in lies the issue. They need to lighten up and not be so self-concisous, worried whether they'll offend anyone because it may harm their career. They're just jokes, nothing to be taken seriously and nothing that has any consequence on their careers or relationships. But I acknowledge that was very likely the thought process of much of the audience. A lot of people did laugh though and Gervais hosted the awards show twice. The U.S media were the ones who reacted badly.
These are well accomplished (super) stars in hollywood. It's kicking upwards, so it becomes funny. Had he kicked downwards and made fun of people that are not considered to have reached the top, then it would be cruel. That's how I see it.

Ricky was hilarious. Some uptight people getting offended by a comedian's joke? Geez.
Exactly!! It's never personal, it's all in the name of comedy but some people's ego's are so high that they feel that they should be treated a certain away and shouldn't be ripped on.
***** Hahahahahhaha
***** So that gives you or him license to comment on other people's reactions to a comedian at an awards show? Well, how fancy you are. Idiot.
***** Sorry but you can't come on the internet, make your ill-informed feelings known, and then not expect someone to react to that. That really, truly is stupid. So next time, think twice before you post.
***** Yes but that's my point, what does you being there have to do with how I or anyone else felt about Ricky Gervais?
Amazing how nobody aside from Ricky is even remotely funny.
I thought Robert Downing Jr. did okay.
ProtectAndServe22 I thought that listening to Robert was as funny as attending a funeral.
Bulhakas Yeah, who'd have thought the guy who's spent his life doing stand up and writing comedies is funnier than the dramatic actors and action movie stars.
What is this, bizarro world? Are you Bizarro Hesh? I feel like he might be surprised by this.
Graham Barth Well, there were also comedic actors and writers like Tina Fey among them. And you don't have to be a comedian to be funny or think of a funny response. In fact some random audience hecklers ocassionally outdo the comedian on stage with a smart remark...
Graham Barth As Nickos said, you don't have to be a professional comedian to be funny. What's more, they all must think they're incredibly funny, since they tried to crack jokes, but only sounded like utter gits. Your IQ must not be very high.

Either way, Ricky Gervais has been around long enough that you know exactly what you're going to get when he goes on stage. Unfortunately, people can't realise that "television is like a bus: You pay your cable subscription (ticket), the bus goes along its route and if you're lucky it'll stop somewhere near where you live. True
He’s hardly a patriot, he’s straight up anti-white (anti-people-of-European-ancestry if you like).
Jon's a goddam commie.
Agree completely with you Jordan! Jon was a better "journalist" than most others pretending to be. He is a truly decent, intelligent and thoughtful human being.

With all due respect, RDJ is way overrated. He played a good superhero and all the sudden people are all over him. I've seem him in interviews, he's nothing more than a smart ass posing as something else. Basically an actor playing another actor. what else is new?
His performance in tropic thunder was hilarious though.
They realize that Ricky spices things up as no one else can, and gets people laughing, gets people watching. So, even with him being a little too honest, it's worth it in the end.

It's a little strange how we revere actors. They're treated as gods and their entire skill is
_"we pretend to be someone else for a while"_
Craig Lee
But sometimes acting transcends just “pretending.” Al Pacino is an example of a pure talent; his work in *The* *Godfather* movies is an integral part of that art..
Actors are total losers. Minimal contribution, mainly soft skills
@@keepswimminggg all you have to do is live life to laugh.or.cry. we certainly have real life, and don't need actors to make us feel anything
I nearly died laughing when the President of the foreign press came out after that introduction!
He didn,t take it very well, poor old chap.
I was hoping he would follow up by just making a quick adjustment to his teeth, but he was too serious and 'important' for that 😂
I'm genuinely fascinated by the reaction to Gervais' routine because it's philosophically about the line between humor and cruelty - the line between "laughing at" and "laughing with." It's like Mel Brooks' famous quote: "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die."
Also it's interesting in terms of seeing how so much of whether a comedian succeeds with his audience is whether he's "won them over".
Well said!
*****
Well remember that all the people in the audience know each other or might have to work together in the future.
I love the way he reacts to some of his jokes like he has to justify them or explain himself. incredible like "I know, I know you hated that"
