Will definitely keep this in mind next time I'm practicing in my car
In my car rn
How are these metal heads all so darn cute
I wish my crush would say that too
We burn all our disgusting, evil, angry calories through our music, so just the cuteness is left.
Growlah Englund FTW!!! Gonna try this!!
That was helpful! One of my favorite growlers is Mark Jansen. Cheers!
Awesome, glad to hear!
Simple but effective. Thanks for this!
I'm in a band and honesty I still feel like I could do alot better in my growling vocals so I practice and practice My Fry Screams and I don't always get it perfect but I never give up I love this video Thank you! I Subbed!!
Glad to hear! Just keep on practising !
thank you for this man
crazy, i actually love your band, found you guys somehow on spotify thisis a massive coincedence. i love mazzaroth dude
Thanks for this!
Will try this! Good vid! U deserves alot of more followers😊
Thanks for this video.. this really works well... I already knew how to metal growl a bit already, but this improved my metal growl so much more. This actually works for throat singing as well.
This was dope made me smile and understand simply
Love the change from the huge growl at 2:20 to the nice polite energy, haha.
But yeah this video is pretty helpful, thanks!
OMG, best tutorial. thx!🖤🤘
This did make more sense showing your force the air from the diaphragm not the throat
Thanks super useful!
Cool, I´m gonna try this. Thanks.
Excellent tutorial man
Im trying to sound like nathan explosion in dethalbum 2-3 + rhythm and lead guitar + drums with double kick. One man band dream is coming close i can feel it!
really good tutorial, i am going to try and improve my screams, i just wanna sound like Mikael Åkerfeldt, i think he is phenomenal
How to do black metal screams: take your current technique and start morphing it to sound like either Palpatine or Pop-Eye. I wish I was kidding.

Because of this video I discovered your band. Sick! Followed you on spotify!
Thanks, cheers mate
Thank you! Every bit of advice helps from those who are doing vocal fry, even if they're still learning as well - there's always some new bit of info to discover. And you have a great sound to your voice!
Thanks, apprechate it!
Thanks for sharing Mate 🤘
Cool tutorial!
I think it's totally OK to make a tutorial, which shows things more from a perceptual side, than from a technical side. Often tutorials don't go into how it should feel!
Good stuff! For me I always felt it in my cheeks or jaw when I do low growl stuff, it’s harder for me to sound raspy and higher pitch screams. Some can produce higher stuff, but anytime I’ve tried it feels forced. it’s like singing, have a voice, but don’t try to sound like others, we all have our own, even when it comes down to scream or growl whatever you will call it. Great vid
I can’t NOT sound like Hegg lololol
like we say in my country Argentina, sos alto capo chabon, mil gracias por esto (you are the best, thx very much for this video)
que onda perro
Thank you! Cheers from Sweden my friend.
Thank you very much !The pronunciation part is very helpful !
Awesome! Glad to hear
Sorry I forgot to run the wave college as got caught up with the wave tree
You are good at what you do. And something worth mentioning is that if you press the back of your tongue against the roof of your mouth, you are going to sound more like a beast.
This coming from a 25+ years death and black-vocalist
Thanks for the comment brother! Yes, tongue placement and shape of the mouth makes a big difference. I never really consciously think of it, which is why this sort of direct advice is great. Will try your idea out! Cheers

HAHAHAHA. I LOVE THIS VID!!! I will not be talking about anything technical!!! RAd. I cant wait to learn from you. Cause i just wanna SCREEEEAM and you make it easier. Thanks banger!!!!
This was helpful I’ve been doing harsh vocals since I was 16 and now I’m 23 I watch vocal tutorials from time to time to brush up and find new things to better hone in on my technique….. Anyway I just thought I’d add that with David Vincent style of vocals you can always hear his voice in his growl so to get closer to his tone I find that putting my voice in and a little less growl it sounds more similar I guess you can also say that is the same technique that Barney Greenway from Napalm Death and John Tardy from obituary use…
Nice one brother!
Wait.. What..
Saw you guys this Friday!🤘
Good show, hello and well explained video👏
Internet sometimes. What are the odds?!😅
Thanks for coming out to see us. Cheers
It took me about 4 months but it actually worked! thanks to this video
Thats awesome, glad to hear!

interesting take on the technique to sounding brutal...what honestly helped me discover The Voice as Ill call it is when a buddy of mine Told me a long time ago when I was trying to make a Band.. " Alex stop trying to sound like Dani Filth and put more Balls in Your voice .....Which at the time really pissed me off...But it was the perfect fuel to The fire...I would practice at it Daily with that idea seared in my head ...Kinda of like how you clearly pointed out.." I SEE I FEEL I AM!!!! Then Long Behold My voice became a fuckin force to be reckoned with....I can still project it to this day 20 years later
Great story, thanks for sharing! It's always interesting to hear how others found "it". I can relate to the Dani Filth stuff. I think most people think they know how they "should" sound. But atleast for me, i had no idea how my natural and relaxed growl would sound until i found it. Only been doing this for 5 years so far. But 2 albums and a bunch of live shows later, i still sound like i did when i started.
It’s crazy when people say this cause Dani has all the way from deep low growl to whistle tone high but okay?
almost 10 days andi can finally scream, soon ill be able to growl
omg bro i could never get any volume out of my growls until i saw this vid and then it was like instant
That's awesome! 🙂
Jesus is teaching how to do hell vocals
🤣
You forgot one very important thing and that's to bring it from your diaphragm not from your throat. If you try to do it with your throat, you're gonna get a sore throat and blow your voice out you have to bring it from Downlow in your diaphragm
Correct. But i explain it in a different way. By learning to shout "Hey" as i do in th video, you automatically engage the right muscles. Using the 'diaphragm' and other terms never helped me understand what it means or how it should feel. But you're 100% right about not pushing it with your throat. Cheers
i am comfortable making growls but they lack volume! the hey! hey! hey! part might help
can throat sing though, overtone throat singing is almost the same ball park but you must have a lot of push in your diaphragm. sing from your gut.
can confirm, the HEY HEY HEY part is INTEGRAL! it works without killing your throat! now to make my neighbours think im possessed
Does make it easier to learn how to project your voice.
you don't need volume to do good growls, in fact it's better to put more emphasis on your technique and style you're looking for over volume. you will notice you're doing things right when your growls are at about the same volume as your normal talking voice or lower. the reason it's better to do that is because you don't want to put excess energy and lung air capacity into sounding loud and straining your vocal cords, microphones can do that for you.
Best explanation this far. Very on point. Does it hurt ur throath in the long run ? Thank you
Thanks! And no. Been doing this for 4-5 years. Recorded two fullength albums and done a load of shows with Sodomisery. Never had any pain. Not even after 10hr vocal recording session 3 days in a row. Cheers man
🤘🏻
I have a very hard time to relax my throat while I combine those two sounds. Do you have any tips on how I can so better? Also awesome video! Best one so far. Ive been trying for yours to growl correctly.
Thanks for the feedback! It's a bit hard to know without hearing/seeing what your doing. But a thing to keep in mind is that it's not about the volume and doing it "loud". Try to do a deep laugh (if that makes sense) without it being loud. The louder you are, the more tension your putting on your throat. Atleast from my experience. Might do a part2 video on this. Hope it made sense. Cheers mate
@@Slowfingered Thank you for your response! Ill keep that mind. Also a part 2 would be super cool.
Great video my man, put me back on track
Glad to hear! Thank you 🤘
You kinda sound like Peter Tagtgren from Hypocrisy. He also did Nightmares Made Flesh with Bloodbath and he sounds insane on that
Thanks for all the comments and feedback! I put out a new video where i adress a few of them along with some Do's & Don'ts

Really great tutorial, I made sounds I couldn't imagine being able to!! But when I do it, it scratches my throat so I assume I'm doing something wrong
It happened to me too when i started growling. Try to use more air and let it flow and pass smoothly.
Thanks bro
I’m someone who wants learn how to death metal growl/scream
for the voice of one of my villains in my comic to make them as terrifying, threatening, brutal and inhuman as possible
once I get people along with myself to do a comic dub of it once it’s finished being drawn
If I could sound like will Ramos when I do the comic dub of it I’ll be very proud of myself lol
I don't listen to lorna shore but I think they do fry screams. You won't get that sound from this technique.
@@rhythmmmmm. Will doesn't just do fry screams. The guy uses various different techniques. It's not "just fry" or "just false cord". That's true for many Metal vocalists. Reducing it to just those two terms is, well, reductive. You can usually find a basis in techniques like fry and false cord. Of course. But saying Will doesn't do false cord (technique shown in this video) isn't correct.
@@ThorsShadow You're putting words in my mouth
I’m fry screaming anyway lol
If you just take that same character and give him the voice of Buble gum barbie, it will be as dreadful.
thanx for the great introduction. But even after weeks of trying I have slight pains in my throat. What is your experience ? is it normal at first ? Or is my approach to the technique wrong ?
Its normal at first and this is coming from a vocalist in a death metal band
My experience is that if you feel pain - you're doing it wrong. Feeling a bit thick or dry in your throat is normal afterwards in the beginning. But hard to say without hearing you. My best guess is that you're probably pushing your voice too hard and aren't relaxed.
Thank you for sharing :) My question is: do you consider it safe to try to learn growling on your own, with YT tutorials for example, on a regular basis? I'd love to learn growling but I'm too anxious to find myself a coach. Yet I'm concerned that incorrect techniques, if not pointed out by someone and fixed, could make some damage to my vocal chords. What do you think?
Think of it as going to the gym. Do you need a personal trainer to learn how to work out? No. You can figure it out on your own. Just pay attention to your body. Try stuff out. If you feel pain while doing it, then you're 100% doing it wrong. If not, then keep doing it until you see results. If you don't see results, try something new. Thats my approach to pretty much everything. Unlike working out, it is very hard for someone to hear if you have bad technique. It's all about how you feel when you do it. But with that said. It sure doesn't hurt having someone giving you tips & tricks to get stuff going in the right direction. As i did in this video. Hope my answer somewhat helped. Good luck, keep at it!
What song is that in the intro? Bad ass
Thanks! Song is called Resurrection and is from my band Sodomisery first EP (with previous vocalist). I put a link in the description. Cheers
Having no idea of how you're doing what you're doing makes it more TRVE KVLT, so it's totally fine. :)
One tip: lifting up your shoulders when taking a breath is proper fuck-up. It indicates a rather poor technique. You have to breathe with the belly. The power for singing comes from the balls, quite literally - it's the pelvic floor muscles and the belly muscles that do most of the work. The upper chest, shoulders and, most importantly, the neck must be COMPLETELY relaxed if you really want to project the sound and not damage you voice. It might be less important when growling but still.
I'm not even gonna ask what genre of music your band plays - as you're from Sweden, it's automatically melodic blackened death metal. :)
God Jul och gott Nytt År.
Thanks for the comment and for the tip! You're probably 100% right. Might seem like I'm only using my chest. But i take full breaths (inhale from belly first, then expand chest). Think i got that from years of doing breathing excersises every day. Might be overkill and enough with the belly breathing only. Will try it out!
God jul my friend!
@@Slowfingered If it doesn't hurt, then you're probably doing it right. :)
I'm no vocal coach either, it's just what I was taught by actual vocal coaches and classical singers. I had thought that my voice was weak and I would never be able to sing, but they made me realize that I was very wrong. The proper breathing technique made all the difference.
It doesn't really help with hitting the right notes though, so I still suck.🤣
@@noneofyerbeeswax8194 awesome, just keep practising. Nothing is impossible. I'm learning how to sing clean at the moment. And there's no shortcut. Just putting in the time and trying new techniques until i find what works for me. If i don't notice any improvement at all in 1-2 weeks. Then i try something different.
Are you able to do fry screams ?
Yes. I do this mostly when I'm layering for a chorus to make the vocals sound huge. I record 3 tracks. 1 fry, 1 mid and 1 low. Then combine them. Might do a video on this.
But how do you make it sound so deep? When I do it, it is just my normal voice with heavy distortion. How do you make it sound guttural?
different mouth position try making you mout into an o shape and experiment with different tounge positions and you should get there
@@Manhunt2299 thank you !
@@cremebeere7783 np
For it to sound guttural (atleast for me), the power needs to come from the belly along with open throat and jaw. That is what i'm trying to explain with the "hey" and pronounciation part. Tongue placement/shape might also make a difference. Hope it helps
You achieve the normal false cord growl by having mouth wide open and tongue in a normal position. You can do a low growl by emphasizing low sounds such as O or A. The E is usually used for higher sounds.
The guttural sound (or the overall gurgliness) comes if you open your mouth into a tight O-shape and put the tip of your tongue either at the back of the front upper teeth or front lowe teeth. This pushes your tongue down as well as create an air pocket inside your mouth. Then if you do a false cord it should sound more constricted and gurgly.
Note - this works for me, but everybody is built different.
Now I have a question. When I do this, it kinda works, but when I clear my throat it stops working. Is that normal?
Sounds like you've got the technique wrong. Put your hand/fingers on your throat. You should be able to feel a strong vibration. If not, then you're probably straining too hard
@@Slowfingered OMG IT WORKS!!!! THANKS DUDE I TRIED THIS FOR SO LONG!!!!!
After I have practised I can feel a small pain in my throat. On a 1-10 scale it's a 2. It always dissapears. Is that normal in the beggining or am I doing something wrong?
This is a tricky one to answer. But the most important thing is that you don't feel pain while doing it. Pain is a clear indication of wrong technique. But what you describe sounds more like being sore after a long workout, which is normal in the beginning. As it takes time for your muscles in the throat to adapt. But it can also be that you are pushing your voice alittle too much. Or trying to do too much in too short time. I mostly felt this in the beginning. Then i learned to not push as hard, and be more relaxed. But i still feel sore every now and then after a long recording session, or live show. Just listen to your body, and see if it gets better. If not - try something different. Hope this made sense, cheers
@@Slowfingered Thanks a lot
how long does it take for the growl to be usable? PS: in three months we play a concert with the band and I can't growl
If you manage to do it without feeling sore in the throat and without too much tension, your good to go. But playing live also produces alot of adrenaline, so you easily overcompensate. Just go for it, live and learn, good luck!
@@Slowfingered thank you! Since I watched your video, I'm doing as you said, And it sounds like something will come of it one day!
Be honest, the edit at 2:59 was because you had to cough right?
Why does it matter?
@@Kamil_Srnka same reason you're questioning me. Inquiring minds want to know
Is it louder than a normal conversational voice? How much?
Depends on your projection
Depends on the person, to an extent, but yeah, I'd generally consider this very loud.
I mean, I personally suck at fry screams and may generally have a loud voice but still, false cord is so much louder for me personally.
I dont understand, I watched a lot of videos for different techniches I wanna learn, and people say thanks and shit, but then I TRY IT AND IT I CANT DO IT, and comes out sounding completly wrong, what am I doing wrong
Just be natural and dont force it. You already know how to do it subconciously example when you are really angry and scream at someone, you may notice that u already has that basic growl. If you can somehow capture that technique while u r angry and learn to reproduce it later then u can build upon that basic growl to evolve into other type of growls
@@karkon479thats the thing, idk how to do it naturally or how to even force it, truth is idk what I am doing
@@chickenpotatogod its okay bro it takes time. Another trick that got me the idea is when i was having a cold i tried to mix sneezing and screaming at the same time and it sounded something like slipknot scream. It might not be the growl u wanted to sound like but it will give you an idea of how metal scream works
@@karkon479noted and thanks
how to do a tired sigh??? i never did that in my life, and it confuses me all the time i watch tutorials
think of falling back into your chair and sighing, that's a tired sigh, like a sigh of disapointment
@@12GASlug i mean, how do you get the rattle? when i'm tired i'm just letting the air out
Think of it as he described it. But instead of just letting air out, give it a push with your stomach. Same feeling as when your trying to take a shit (im serious)
