When I was about 12 years old I would help my neighbor with chores and one of those was to put ear corn into a corn "crib". He pulled a one row New Idea with an old H Farmall. Made for a long day but it got the job done. So been there done that. That was about 50 years ago. Slick modification on the picker. That is some good looking corn.

Corn in our neck of the woods didn't do so well this year here in northern Ohio. One year dad was out picking corn with our single row picker and came upon a stalk that was 15 feet high with three ears. Of course, he pulled it out of the ground and brought it to the house and placed it alongside the garage. It stayed there for about four days. Those New Ideas were pretty popular back in the day.

Growing up, we had a NI 2 row picker that we used for high moisture corn. We had a Farmhand Grinder/Blower that we would grind most of the loads and blow into our silo. But in the meantime, we had a McKee (?) 3pt mounted grinder/blower. We would grind a gravity box load and blow into an old chopper box next to the barn. Once we filled, leveled and opened the silo, we'd quit grinding into the chopper box. Now, all we do is earlage with our SP Harvester as well.

The first farm I worked on had 40 milk cows and 500 sheep. We filled a wooden crib 8×14×60 plus 3 or 4 wire cribs. We ran a 324 New Idea to pick and then we had another 324 with a shelling unit that we shelled corn for the sheep. We used a 4020 diesel power shift to run both pickers. We stored the shell corn in the chopper wagons, gravity wagons and kicker wagons lined with plywood.

That’s husking better than my bosses 6-row uni-picker! We used to have a Devil of a time just getting wagons unloaded! We also kept plugging the shoots in the crib. He had a wood crib with a roof and storage between the cribs. It had several openings along the peak of the roof and several shoots built between the trusses. If you place the elevator just right, you could fill both sides at the same time.😎

My dad told me he used to walk beside a horse drawn wagon and picking the corn by hand in the 1920's . I remember my grandfather having a hand powered sheller I thought was fun in the late '50's early '60's . When I was working for a large custom farmer we used combines so luckily I never had to pick corn by hand unless it was just a little ..

Pretty good time with that old 323. Our last two or three 23s and now we have a 324 too row. We use your corn to feed our beef cattle here and we have a market for some for people to feed wildlife and so on so we still pick and shell both. In the fall we shell enough at the end of corn picking season 2 last through the winter and then to keep her food business going in the summertime and up until picking time will dry shell out of the crib with a portable sheller oh no we probably pick one we put through the combine still here

Nice job on the auger in the husking bed; seems to work fine. My uncle Ed picked our corn with his Farmall M pulling a 2-row New Idea picker in the late '50s. When he traded up to a new Farmall 400, he bought a 2-row mounted unit (probably a 2-MH). I always enjoyed hauling loads of ear corn to the crib with our AC WD-45. Thanks for bringing back so many wonderful farming memories.

WOW!!! That corn picker brought back memories!!! We had a 2-row pull-type New Idea corn picker that we pulled with a Farmall "M". We used flare-box wagons to put ear corn in. We never did graduate to gravity wagons. A few farmers in our area started using gravity wagons in the 70's. In the late 60's, we graduated to an Oliver 2-row pull-type corn picker pulled by an Oliver 1850 gas tractor. We never worried too much about getting the husk off the ear, because there is good nutritional value in the husk. We ground up the whole ear for feed for our Dairy cows and Black Angus cattle. Not to many farmers in my day had grain bins. We would mostly store ear corn in corn cribs. When it came time to shell corn to empty the cribs, we had a special corn shelling rig come in and shell the corn off the cob. It would separate the shelled corn, the corn cobs, and the husk. We hauled the shelled corn to the town elevator, the cobs were used for bedding, and the husks were used as a feed supplement for the cattle. Basically the same as turning the cattle out into the fields in the fall and winter, to graze on the residue.

I remember going to the family farm when I was a kid... some of my best memories as a child. But time I was 13 my uncle stopped farming and rented the land to the neighbor. Now he passed away and one of his sons inherited the farm but lives 5 hours away and just lets it sit there for the most part as the people who were renting the land stopped paying.
I'm here just crying at the fact it's not being put to use. I work 12hrs 7 days a week doing irrigation and would give it up to farm until my bones say nope and even then I'd still find a way.
