For some reason I have a feeling Remco is going to get bored and do a 2022 world championships attack from long range. As a Yorkshireman I hope Pidcock does well.
It's going to be a very difficult tactical race because of MVDP. There just isn't the numbers to make the race hard enough to get rid of MVDP. And there isn't a big long climb to peel him off. Belgium is going to need help from other teams. But I think everyone is going to be passive, just resigned to controlling non-threatening breakaways, before a selection is created very late, maybe with 80 to 60km to go. And MVDP will still be there, waiting to attack everyone. If Mads and Wout is still there you can be sure attacks will be raining down, because no one wants either of them in a sprint.
@Medikto totally agree. Say some selection is made and its down to 25 riders with 30ks to go, attacks couls fly from Jorgensen/Healy/Bettiol/laporte/alaphillipe/Hirschi Belgium and Denmark will look to Netherlands to control
Tactics are going to be more difficult with no radios. Smaller countries with two and one riders could team up. All I can say is this going to be a fun road race. Love to see Bini somehow finding a way to win it.
In 2012 a whole bunch of nations teamed up to stop GB and Cav winning, I can see something similar happening to stop van aart/remco and Van der poel. Who will be making each other. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pidcock goes long. No radios makes it a very different watch, gaps by motor bike chalk board are not very accurate. Who can forget the womens race in Tokyo where they had forgotten the Austrian up rode. 🤣🤣
Killer analysis as always - helps me stay less annoyed with the Peacock crew! Pidcock looked on fine form coming back from a flat around lap 4 to win gold in the mountain bike race... Makes me think he was using the tour to some extent as training for the Olympics. However, do you think there's enough days between the mountain bike and road bike events for him to be able put out huge wattage again? Guess we'll see if he can, if the rest of the British team and tactics can get him into a winning position for the road race.
Yes I wonder that , Tom looks in great form , and arguably uk may have the best team support if they all ride for Tom or maybe all ride for another uk rider if they feel in great shape
I’m interested to see if GB work to keep the race together for Tom to attack later or will they prefer to attack right away. Not sure how good Tom will be but the MTB race shouldn’t affect him too much assuming he got enough long training days in after leaving the TdF early. 🤔🦋👊

Would be nice to see the old arrowhead of the peloton with 3-4 teams working together like the old days before marginal gains came in :p Think it was a neurotic Cadel Evan at BMC who started having the Team surrounding their riders.
I dont like the rules, partly because I want big results from my own country, Norway. Its wrong that the countries has different size on the teams. Norway has only two, Foss and Wærenskjold. They are good, but Wærenskjold might be reduced by his TT-crash. I miss Abrahamsen and Kristoff. I think Denmark is a favourite because they have four, and because I guess Mads Pedersen is a type of rider that is buildt for this kind of trackprofile. Pedersen, Van Aert, Van Der Poel and Evenepoel are favourites. And Chris, I like your insights :)
I agree with you - don't forget Rasmus Tiller - if the start list is only about 90 (of which plenty will be dropped early), there should be more than enough room for a few extra good riders from cycling countries, perhaps based on UCI-points. - I am curious what Evenepoel will do - last year at World championships he struggled a bit with the corners and positioning, causing him to get tired too quickly. He must have worked on that. In this race I think that diesel riders like Van Baarle, Mohoric, Benoot, Bettiol, Küng etc. will also have a chance, if they aren't used up as domestique and manage to slip away and no organized pursuit occurs.
It is something completely different than what cycling fans normally watch, but with many of the all-star cast we are used to seeing. Honestly, I think it will be fun. Fun enough to get up in the middle of the night, no. But I won't mind watching a recording pretending I got up.

Great analysis, however I was a little underwhelmed by Matteo Jorgenson at the Tour. I'm not saying he didn't make the best of a bad situation, but I feel he should have been there later in stages when UAE had Yates and Almeida still there with Pog and Jorgenson had been dropped long before Pog made his attack. He is still young and still growing as a rider, and sometimes Visma didn't have anyone else to help Jonas, but I was still a little disappointed with him as I felt he needed to be there alongside Jonas to bury himself with one last push for Jonas to pull back Pog and he just wasn't there. So I'm slightly confused as to why you think he had such a great Tour.

It won't be so hard tactically. 1. The breakaway wil, be full of crap riders, easy controllable. 2. MVDP or so will attack early to form smaller group. 3. It's likely some will jump in the final if Monmantre isn't hard enough , ideal group is 3. So not complicated , good change a good outsider, not topfavorite will win ( as all previous olympics).
Chris. I know it is off-topic, but I wondered if you saw the Men's Olympic Triathlon? It was an incredible race, but the cycling section was inconsequential because they allowed drafting. 30 athletes came out of the water at different times and all became one group during the cycling section. What do you think of this Olympic rule?
Good incentive for some to figure out how to sit in, make jumps, attack, and use road tactics to get a good break going before the final run transition. Not their usual style.
@@bjornwarnitz5761 I wouldn't say the quality is less, yes they likely put out less watts overall but it's a different set of skills that road racers would have to learn before they'd be any good as well.
Yes mountain biking requires bike handling skills that are unnecessary in road cycling. I would say road racing requires team tactics and individual endurance. Mountain bike racing requires more adaptability and perhaps explosive power. I think the transition from mountain bike racing to road racing is easier than the inverse.
I feel that the olympic Road Race is a silly format. In Road Races you need teams. All teams should have the same number of riders. Plus you get some riders working not for country but for pro team (we all know deals happen on the road). It is a strange hybrid race.
If reading your explanation on teams based on UCI points why did Ecuador send only one rider when they have two good riders snd one was the defending champion?
Still think the IOC should limit all teams to 3 riders and limit the price of the bikes used. I love the lack of radios, I’d eliminate the cars with DS too. Only neutral service vehicles.
I hate te say it because i love to see him race and win but i think you're overestimating Wout van Aert. In the 230+ races he has shown to be a bit less compared to other riders and i would place him next to a on form Dylan van Baarle
Those that don’t stick their nose into the fray miss out in the Olympic road race. Vinokourov was one of my favorite racers because of his reckless abandon and aggression (Olympic gold medalist) Radios make lots of races waaaaaay too predictable. Seeing racers have to use their wits I think is very entertaining and I want to see guys desperate to win and take all the chances they can muster. I wish more races disallowed radios
@@ChrisHornerCycling you were right, almost nobody dared to. But he is stronger and showed them who had the balls, just like he used to do during his junior years and his early career. Chapeau à super Remco. That guy has probably the biggest "engine" of the pro peloton.
The belgian team alreddy told they not gonna do all the work allone ! And by the way, in time Wout and Remco became friends .... It will all depends of the race situation. If 1 team would go all the way 50% of the peleton will be gone. if somme european teams would work together they will blow 70% away; For sure Remco will ride for Wout and vice versa + they have 2 subtoppers in there team. Btw france will always ride .... If Jasper stuyven is in the frontgroup he will do 0 work ! ! if tiesj benoit is in the frontgroup he will do also 0 work ! Think about it Chris ;-)
the vuelta pleading for ayuso was nauseating. Also i will argue with you on WVA form. At his best WVA came in 5 sec behind Ganna on a flat TT. On this olympics he came 10 sec behind. Tarling, Ganna, Evenepoel just a tad better at TT.I'd say WVA is close to his best. Problem is VDP best tends to be a small touch better (for 1 day races) And i will somewhat disagree on your take. I can see why working together with other teams may be a good solution if necessary. But with 2 leaders, Stuyven having ideas as well, and Benoot not a tractor. I 'd say Belgium should shun control of the race and play hide and seek unless a truly dangerous group gets too much time.
Belgium have no chance to play hide and seek. They are too strong. If they go into the break it’s a large break then the odds are not good if it’s Benoot or Stuyvins there. And then Wout and Remco have only one teammate with them behind and who will chase the break if all five big teams are in the breakaway. It’s a tactical nightmare really if Belgium play the early break and the break is large. 🤔😱🦋👊
It was a travesty that Greg Lemond wasn't able to race for gold in the 1980 Summer Games since President Jimmy Carter boycotted them due to Russia (USSR) invaded Afghanistan. Always wonder how that race would have panned out for Team USA.
Maybe an enterprising country would hack their Garmins or Wahoos or their own computer to receive text messages and would send orders and updates to show up on the screens of their riders. Or have them wear smart watches and get texts to them.
If I take a look at the teams there is just one conclusion.......the Belgians are the absolute favorites to take it all......that is if the the pro team interests don't play a part like so many times before!!!!
Belgian national team always seems to fall apart, despite superstars racing together. Maybe that's the problem? Are they treating Remco as leader, or are they all aiming to win tactics be dammed?
@@Foxtrottangoabc Don't think so. Though athletes pay lip service to racing -competing for their country, when push comes to shove it is all for the individual.
@@belgianbiscuit Same in 2020 Wout was a big favorite, but he couldn't keep up with Julian. Then I agree with you in 2021, in spite of Remco pulling all day for the team, Wout once again couldn't keep up with Julian and Jasper was outsprinted at the line. Last year Wout couldn't keep up with Mathieu. I'm a little tired of hearing about how the Belgians are always favorites. Remco has a shot but if Wout wins, that is wonderful, but I'm not holding my breath.
give 5 seconds to Remco on the flat, and he's ribedebie for good. Tiesj to control together with UK and Denmark. Evenepoel to be on every move from 80k left to go. Let Jasper stay with Van Aert and if Remco gets caught after all, he can ride on the flat behind MVP when he goes on the hills.

In late June, Chris talked about his experiences in the 2012 Olympic Road Race: ua-cam.com/video/85K-wEqHrFw/v-deo.html

Trade team question - after all Wout's difficulties this year, if he was up the road going for gold, would Jan Tratnik chase him down?
lets see if Italy and France pull the Peloton along again
🤔🦋👀
You didn't cover the mountain bike race. Piddock did a tasty manoeuvre at the last tree and won gold!! Rock on multi discipline cyclists!!!
Mountainbike quality is less. Piddock came from crosscycling before the road. His only accomplishes are in mountainbike
French audience didn't find it "tasty".😉
@@PlaySA Victor Koretsky should try the road. Man is a beast.
Does the whole team get a medal? Or just the top 3 riders?
I feel that the olympic Road Race is a silly format. In Road Races you need teams. All teams should have the same number of riders. Plus you get some riders working not for country but for pro team (we all know deals happen on the road). It is a strange hybrid race.
Is this a play on mvdp using that bathroom in the world championship?
That was classic. What a funny story to tell if you were the owners of the house. 🏠 😂🦋👊
Don’t sleep on Madis Mihkels
If reading your explanation on teams based on UCI points why did Ecuador send only one rider when they have two good riders snd one was the defending champion?
Because Ecuador isn't in the first 20 countries on the uci rankings.
My guess is:
-Evenepoel to get into a breakaway with one teammate
-Evenepoel attacking and going solo for the last 40km
But who will work with Remco in the break? 👀🤔🦋👊
@@ChrisHornerCycling you were right, almost nobody dared to. But he is stronger and showed them who had the balls, just like he used to do during his junior years and his early career. Chapeau à super Remco. That guy has probably the biggest "engine" of the pro peloton.
The belgian team alreddy told they not gonna do all the work allone ! And by the way, in time Wout and Remco became friends .... It will all depends of the race situation. If 1 team would go all the way 50% of the peleton will be gone. if somme european teams would work together they will blow 70% away;
For sure Remco will ride for Wout and vice versa + they have 2 subtoppers in there team.
Problem is VDP best tends to be a small touch better (for 1 day races)
And i will somewhat disagree on your take.
@@ChrisHornerCycling i dunno. I think with some luck they can hide in the peloton for the first 185 km. With luck ofcourse.

Why do a few nations have 4 riders and most have 3 riders?
reduced allotments
There is seeding involved with top teams getting more places and lesser teams less places
Think the seeding is based on UCI points
@@Foxtrottangoabc thats not fair
@@Nonixification 😂. He didn’t make the rule
It was a travesty that Greg Lemond wasn't able to race for gold in the 1980 Summer Games since President Jimmy Carter boycotted them due to Russia (USSR) invaded Afghanistan. Always wonder how that race would have panned out for Team USA.
MVDP
Mathieu van der Poel

I would’ve thought that it would be every man for himself in the Olympics.
Do they give team awards as well as individual?
Maybe an enterprising country would hack their Garmins or Wahoos or their own computer to receive text messages and would send orders and updates to show up on the screens of their riders. Or have them wear smart watches and get texts to them.
Yeah its going to be scrappy, uncontrolled, massive gaps, no-one working Junior level tactics bike race - it should be great.
Won't be as much chaos as you think.
Realistically Alaphilippe doesn’t have the legs so he will most likely work for his trade team Quickstep/Remco.
Laporte maybe? He was pretty good at the tour. Saved the day on the gravel stage for visma 🤔
Jasper stuyven has won san remo so he definitely can ride 250 km
If I take a look at the teams there is just one conclusion.......the Belgians are the absolute favorites to take it all......that is if the the pro team interests don't play a part like so many times before!!!!
Belgian national team always seems to fall apart, despite superstars racing together. Maybe that's the problem? Are they treating Remco as leader, or are they all aiming to win tactics be dammed?
@user-fb3yf2xb2z remco won gold at time trial. Does that mean remco will ride for wva
@@Foxtrottangoabc Don't think so. Though athletes pay lip service to racing -competing for their country, when push comes to shove it is all for the individual.
The Belgians were gonna be unbeatable in 2021 WCRR but it fell apart. I think they learned from this. I think Remco will ride in support of WVA
There's a chance Wout and Remco just power away together because the peleton is too unorganized and no team wants to work together at the start
To do that very early into the race would be very impressive. I don’t believe they could do it. But I have been wrong many times. And I would live to see it. 😂👀👊🦋🔥💪
Shame for Slovenija. But if Pogacar and Roglic participated, nobody would want to team with Slovenija either, cause why would you guarantee your loss by pulling for Pogi and Roglic.
Exactly 👊🦋
Is the inability to control the peloton a boost for the breakaway? Who's going to burn half their team to pull everyone back to the break?
Yes. If no one controls the peloton then the break will stay away. Or we get multiple groups all chasing each other thru out the race. 🔥🤔🦋😱
GO MVDP!!
Go McNulty.!!!

Remco working for wout, that won't happen.
