#50 John Deere 3320 3033R Plowing with 2-12 Ferguson Plow

  • Had some Easter weekend fun with Dad's John Deere 3320 (essentially the same as the Deere 3033R).
    It was still too wet for them to be farming for real, so we decided to get out the 3320 and try it with the old Ferguson plow.
    We never did get the plow adjusted perfectly. Watching the video, I think the right arm was still a bit too low. We lengthened the top-link until the plow ran relatively level from front to back, but it believe it was leaning toward the right a little bit most of the time while in the furrow. Honestly, we were enjoying it, and didn't pay enough attention to the detail to finish adjusting it.
    The biggest issue is the physical size (wheel-base) of the tractor. Since it is SO short, the plow would over-react to any small change the tractor encountered, causing the depth control to be difficult.
    Also, having the rear wheels set to their 'narrow' setting contributed to the same exaggeration if the preceding furrow was deeper or more shallow than normal.
    I think the plow would be too much for my John Deere 1025R to be able to handle. I would be better suited with a 1-bottom plow ...if I needed one at all!
    We had a great time. A good bonding time for 3 generations of us to "play in the dirt". My 83 yr old dad was having a great time. We didn't think he was going to let us drive!
    I also included some video of a REAL plow (8-18 White 449). I have video of it in action from a few years ago. If anyone is interested, I can post it.
    Other tractors making cameo appearances in the video:
    Allis Chalmers WD-45
    IH 706
    Oliver 1950-T
    IH 1466 (with Cab).
    ..and of course Dad's Kubota UTV/RTV

    Really great to see your Dad participating. Reminds me of the days with my Dad running our old JD 2040 open station plowing the annual garden in SW Arkansas at the Peach Farm. Lots of treasured, golden memories!

    I had a 2014 2025R. Had the same complaint with the diff lock location. OK for occasional use but when used constantly plowing snow it grew old quickly. Fun video for multiple reasons. Never had a plow for my small gardens...would have liked to try the two bottom but doubt it could pull it. Had a 54" JD 3 point rototiller that did a great job except for ocassional clogging. Enjoy your Dad as often as you can. What a nice family.

    We used to put old motor oil on the plows after we were done. Of course, all we use these days are chisel plows and disc harrows. I still see tumble plows in the irrigated valley though for sugar beets and corn.

    That is a pretty sight. Waiting on the disking. I'd love to see that 8-bottom turning the ground. That is a good looking farm. I wish our parents hadn't sold our farm. I'd still be doing it if they hadn't. Thanks for the video.

    He is doing a fine job and thats from an Irishman who ploughed lots of acres with a Ferguson 20 approx 22 horsepower 2 wheel drive it had the Ferguson depth control system which worked off the top link with weight transfer We later went on to bigger Hp tractors and up to 4 furrows likely to do real classy work you may need a depth wheel with that tractor but its fun to watch you bring a smile to an old Irishman living in the wilds of Western Australia

    Thanks for the vid Tim. Coincidentally, I picked up a set of identical Ferguson plows for $200. I pull them b3hind a JD 4520. I was using them on an old pasture, and the unit kept clogging up. I ended up removing the coulters, and it works perfectly now.
    Next some discing, then planting with the 2 row planter I just received from John Harris sales !
    Hope to keep the deer happy, and coming back in November 😄

      Had 12' for the small tractor and 14' and 16' for the field tractors. The rule of thumb was always 8'. Then the chisel plows came out and we plowed 12" to break the pan. By the way, it doesn't hurt to chisel a garden every 4-5 years for the same reason.

    Not sure if you all know how lucky you are, great video. Must have been great fun with everyone. The heck with depth, a couple of inches too deep is no big deal when you're all having that type of day. Hang onto what you have with the family, farm and equipment with all your might and thank God for the blessings.

      @TractorTimewithTim  7 років тому

      +Jack Stonington yes sir, 100% agree. Of course, we were plowing just for the fun of it. Attempting to adjust the plow properly was part of the fun....then we finally got bored with that before we got it perfect! Wonderful day. I hope everyone can see how much fun we have together.

    • @jackstonington3772
      @jackstonington3772 7 років тому +1

      Tim not only did I realize how much fun you all were having I have to admit to a touch of jealousy and longing for the old days myself. I'm hoping to get a small plot going myself this year but don't think it'll happen. I'm getting on in years and the health hasn't been the best so seeing this got me thinking and maybe even feeling a bit sorry for myself but I'll find a way around it and The Lord will help me out with that by kicking me in the pants a few times (hahaha).
      I hope you understand these videos your making have a pretty good impact on a codger like me so please keep them coming, your helping me out without even knowing it. (just subscribed)
      Seeing the entire family getting into it with all the generations is a pure pleasure and seeing the tractors another big boost. After seeing this one I may follow up on getting another John Deere I have been considering...., I only have a couple of acres to play with so a smaller machine will do the job, I will have to see what's available in the used market first. Time to check out some of those other videos you made.
      Tim - thanks, you're helping an old man in ways you probably can't see but believe me you are.
      May The Lord smile over your family and bless your land. Thank you! :) ;)

    We had a small farm in North Central MN. We had an old John Deere M, loved that tractor. I would plow our 10 acres with a tow behind 2 bottom plow, It didn't have the coulters so it pulled pretty hard in clay. That old M in 1st gear would pull it but it worked hard.

    He from memory is correct there is a ratio dept to width of furrow , your upper link in a little short , nearly impossible to plough properly if boards are not cleaning shiny , properly set up that tractor would fly that plough We used to pull it with the little Ferguson 2 wheel drive no diff lock . But story the spuds never asked how straight the furrow was

    That tractor looks about like the tractor I have which is a 3032E and I just received it a little over 30 days ago, and still getting use to it. I have a turning plow for it and my other tractor, and a middle buster for gardening. I also have a Frontier tiller which I have had for about two years and have yet to use it. I want to plant a garden and may have to wait until I get a cultivator also to use for clearing weeds out of rows, and to make rows.

    Back in the 60's, my dad pulled 2-14's with the 2N ford in 2 nd gear with 17 different types of soil in one small field. depth was 8" all day long. Your diesel should have no problem, if it can't do it get a ford gas. lol.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  6 років тому

      The hydrostatic transmission steals lots of power.
      Also, the 2N is heavier, so that would help with traction.

    I would have thought that 3320 would handle a three row turn over plow with ease. That is what we used to use on a Jubilee My grandfather had three Ford Jubilee. I never got to plow with a Jubilee because they did that in January and I was still in school in January. About the closest I came was I got to pull a three row harrow several times. I will tell you the 3320 was moving a lot faster than the Jubilee would do under load. My grandfather wanted me to maintain 2,150 as much as possible, especially when using the PTO, so I was usually in 1-L most of the time. On my Ford 7740 I could spin up my 8 foot bush hog in 3rd gear, easily when I was not in big stuff or difficult terrain.

    I have a two bottom Ferguson plow that I pull with my Kubota L4701DT. I think is identical to the plow in this video. It appeared to me that you made adjustments to your linkage as you went along that you did not show in the video. It looks like you got it dialed in pretty good before you were done. My Kubota L4701 does not have draft control, so I have been thinking about adding a gauge wheel outside of the rear moldboard.

      Dale, the worst part (over the years) has been the inability to keep it from blowing a head gasket.
      We've replaced 10-15 head gaskets (just an estimate). We keep the old ones, so I should count them to see how many it has been. We bought a new 'short block' once, but saw no improvement. Oh well. We're just careful to avoid pulling it very hard now.

      If you look at a old Ford or Ferguson they have bigger rear wheels than this JD so they get better traction on just the rear wheels. I think these modern more comfortable tractors need their 4wd to manage. I don't blame them, overwhelming majority of these are never used for ploughing.

    I also have a JD 5085M LP that I use in the poultry houses. The lift control system on it sucks. I had my 4 bottom turn plow attached to it Saturday and finally gave up on the Deere and disconnected the plow. Re-attached it to my NH 4050 and got the job done correctly. The lift on the NH is much easier to fine tune.

      You need all the weight you can get. So, rimguard (beet juice tire fluid) in the rear tires would really help. The 3046r will have plenty of power to handle 2-12's. either need front weights or loader on for extra weight up front.
      Thanks for watching!

(It can get pretty light ripping out trees) I’m worried the extra weight will make it sink when I’m using it to mow. I mow my lawn with it. Do you know how involved it is to add/remove the wheel weights? I don’t plan on plowing too much. For the disc, would you rather have tow behind or 3-pt? Y’all be safe out there!

    I've been watching your videos and I am thinking of buying a 1025r myself. I will be getting a mower deck and a tiller. I noticed that you have a king kutter tiller instead of a John deere. Is there a reason you didn't go with the john deere, and does the 1025 handle the tiller well if I have a far bit of ground I will be maintaing? thanks for the videos .

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  8 років тому

      +Troy Nicolai Thanks for watching, and thanks for the question. The simple answer on why I chose the King Kutter was price. I could see no reason to spend any more than the price of the King Kutter.
      I am a regular on www.greentractortalk.com. Lots of discussion on tillers there. I've never heard even a single negative comment about ANY brand of tiller. Everyone seems to love their tiller.
      Even the 1023e (less horsepower) seems to handle a 4' tiller with ease.
      I think the biggest question for a 1025R/King Kutter combination is whether to get a King Kutter XB, or the King Kutter II.
      I chose the XB for two reasons: 1) It is centered behind the tractor and 2) I think (not sure) that it will lift higher on the 1-series
      There are advantages to the KK II as well: 1) It can till deeper I believe...only because the shoes are mounted differently. and 2) It is quick-hitch compatible

    Does your 3033 have upward pressure on the 3 point hitch? Or does the way the plows bite into the dirt keep it down?

    Man that looks fun. Wish i could do this sorta stuff myself. Sadly, no land of my own and no tractor of my own either. My folks have both land and tracor but sadly they're not very interested in doing anything large enough with either of them that would require plowing. They rent their land out to other farmers instead. They mainly just keep the tractor for when they occasionally need to lift something with the loader or move something with the big forestry trailer. Both of which i usually end up doing for them. Don't think the machines would see much use if i wasn't around to run them, which makes me kinda sad... But ah well, maybe one day i'll have land and machines of my own that i can do what i want with. Here's hoping at least :)

      @TractorTimewithTim  8 років тому

      Sorry CJ. I was putting together a response on my blog for this question, but I haven't got it done yet.
      The question is very difficult to answer without thinking more about what you want and need to do with the tractor rather than the acreage. Can you expand on what you need to do with the tractor? For instance, is it 13 acres of lawn mowing? 1 acre of lawn + 12 acres of trees, etc.
