I have a 2008 ML 63 and the battery is dead. I was getting ready to take it to Mercedes and pay them $550 to replace the battery. This video helps me do it myself. Thanks, you saved me a lot of money.
when you are disconnecting the battery cables always disconnect the neg. one first then the Pos. When putting them back, do the Positive first than the neg. Other than that, great video.
Great video mate. Everything in this was spot on and made the battery replacement of my ML350 a simple task. The only thing I'd add to this is that you may find it difficult lifting the battery out - I used a long thick shaft screwdriver to give the battery a "ramp" to travel up as you pull it out on the angle.
This video saved me $232.00 Because I installed bought the battery from Advance Auto Parts and installed the battery my self, instead of using the Mercedes dealer service!
I swear some car engineers must have been high designing some of these cars. Why for heavens sake put a battery in such a place. Thanks for the video helps alot
@@Don-gl1cx Nowadays there better cars that offer more for your money than german cars. Infact most of them are not built in Germany. Like the ML is an Alabama car aka "alabama trash can"
believe it or not the Engine compartment get hot and will weaken the battery life. Putting it back in the back seat area is better for longer life. If you really want to have a challenge at a batter R&R try the Chrysler Seabring it is in the Right hang front wheel well. that that is crazy
For the battery removal, if you're already connecting a trickle charger under the hood to maintain the settings of the car's computer, you don't need a battery tender to connect to the battery right? At 5:54, once we connect the positive cable first, is that when we should disconnect the trickle charger before we connect the negative one or should we remove the trickle charger after we connect both the positive and negative in said order? In the video, you connected the negative one first.
I believe you're overthinking this whole thing.... The trickle charger doesn't affect how the battery is connected to the car or the order in which it was connected. The car will only draw whatever amount of energy it needs, so having both, trickle charger and battery at the same time will not do any harm whatsoever. Hook the up whichever way you want and then disconnect them whichever way.
Great tutorial. A few notes to add.. you’ll need a 10 inch socket extension w swivel adapter on end. When putting bracket and bracket nuts back on use a magnet extension tool (about $6 at Lowes) to put bracket back over bolts and to start your nuts. I think he mentions this briefly but doesn’t go into detail. Pretty straight forward if you follow his steps here and have the right tools.
When putting the battery back, I connected the positive, then tightened it a little. Then connected negative. When I went to fully tighten positive, the connector just came off and a crazy spark came heating up my wrench. Got me so worried. Two lessons learnt : Do not remove that black cover for the negative terminal on the new battery till the end. Tighten positive to snug. Then remove the negative terminal cap. As a 5 4" something, it was unbelievably hard to take the old battery out, as it's so heavy. Also, some type of spilled fluid had got the bottom stuck, had to use a pry bar to move it and I used wipes to clean off some brown fluid that was all over. I did not have any battery issues, but decided to replace it as it was 9 years old and running well. I used a magnetic extension to position and tighten screws as it kept falling off.
wow hope you're alright... must have touched by accident some metal parts of the car when you where tightening the positive. I agree with all the pointers you brought up, those are some good advices 👍 thanks for the feedback!
Is the battery that you pulled out size H8? Did you replace it with the same H8 size battery? These days, some battery manufacturers are suggesting H6 AGM as a replacement even though it is lower in specs just because of ease of replacement (mechanically)
Does it matter which terminal you disconnect first? I've seen other videos remove the negative term... first then reconnect the positive term... on the reinstall of the new battery.
Well, you're right, the veryyyyy correct way to do it is the NOPO-PINI way: Negative out, Positive out Positive in, Negative in I get caught in the middle of it when trying to record, forgetting about it or just trying to do it fast and don't pay attention. BUT as long you disconnect the Positive first make sure it's completely protected and not let it touch any metal part of the car and you should be fine which ever way you decide to disconnect the battery leads.
You could but you might lose your car's stored info. I highly recommend using a trickle charger, just in case. Walmart has plenty of those and any car/auto store.
If I'm just disconnecting the battery for long vacation (half a year or more) can I just disconnect the negative terminal? or do I still have to remove both negative and positive terminals?
It’s best to disconnect it completely and actually take it out the car and store inside especially if you live in a cold place. Even better, use a reputable “automatic” trickle charger that has a BMS which charges and stops when it’s full and then charges it again when it goes below the level and so on… Regular trickle chargers won’t do that as you have to manually remove it when battery is full or it might damage it. If you’re going to get one, look for a trickle charger charger that supports the exact type of battery that you have since there are a lot of types of batteries out there. Or you can get a high-end battery maintainer that has functions for all types of batteries.
@@AlbanianFix Thank you! I live in SoCal and park the car inside my garage, so temperature isn't a big deal. I thought about the trickle charger, if I get one do I connect it to the front engine's positive and negative terminals or to the battery under the seat?
If a car has a battery installed inside the cabin and sometimes in the trunk even, the battery vent is a safety component that avoids pressure & gas build-up and allows air and gasses to pass through the vent tube and go outside so you don't breathe it into your lungs.
@AlbanianFix I pulled it back enough... it's just not enough room from the back of the seat and the floorboard to pull it out. I'm going to have to reconnect everything and see if I can raise the seat up & forward. But I'm pretty sure it's as far as it can go. I'll try again after work.

Great video thankyou. Going to change mine this weekend. How critical is it to put the trickle charge
Not critical at all, I always do it on every car, even old ones, just out of habit.
Helpful tip: make sure you raise the seat high up before disconnecting the battery. Or it , the battery , ain’t coming out.
👍 thanks !
Would it make it any easier to remove the entire seat?
I made that mistakeg😢😂😂😂

I'm not sure because I got it from NAPA, asked for the exact same replacement. But it's good to know for next time. Thank you!
Just what I needed! Thanks
How to replace it if the passenger side seat doesnt move ?
jump it with another car or use a good battery charger... not sure if the trickle charger has enough power to let you move the seat.

What if I don’t have a trickly charger and I just change it out like that ???
So when can I find me a trickle charger ???

Very helpful dude thank you.
Great video. Also...maybe change the aux battery at the same time.
Will do another video for that as well.

If the battery is dead, how do I move the seat forward?
With jumper cables from another car or use one of those portable jump starters

I appreciate the Ziploc bag trick. Thanks.

Yup

Where from does the auxiliary battery get his power? From main battery or does the car load it seperatly? Thanks!
The negative should be disconnect first and reconnected last.

Good car, but ridiculous place to put a battery my back went out doing this job

Hi. Which trickle charge are you using in this video?
I bought the cheapest one that Walmart had. As long as it’s a 12 volt trickler you’re fine.
Where can I find one ??
How much ??
Great job 👏 👍 👌 🙌 😀 .
The trickle charger isnt required. Everything will work fine without doing that step.

Thank u sooooooo much.
