My DIL’s 17 year old brother once told his parents that if anything happened to him he wanted Alabama’s ANGELS AMONG US and Garth’s THE DANCE played at his funeral, and he wanted it at 3:30pm so his friends could come after school. Several months later he was in a terrible accident in a rainstorm, for 2 weeks he was on life support before his family agreed to take him off. It was the saddest funeral I have ever attended, and so beautiful. Steve would have been so proud of the turnout of a church full of those who loved him.
My husband was a big Garth fan. Even got a guitar signed by him. We would dance to this every time we got a chance. He passed away in 2005, unexpectedly. I cry every time I hear this because I'm glad I didn't know how it would end. I didn't miss the dance of life with him.
My husband passed in 2011 and my parents took me to see Garth in Vegas a few months later to try to cheer me up some, but I cried all through this song. 😢
The video for this is amazing. It shows many different heroes who passed away too soon. When he sings about being glad that he didn't 'know how the king would fall', it shows Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The video also shows the astronauts who passed on The Challenger years ago. It isn't about a literal dance. If you listen, he is talking about losing someone too soon, as in gone to heaven. As if to say, maybe they wouldn't have got on that rocket, if they thought they were gonna never come back. They might have skipped it & then they would have 'missed the dance'... AKA the adventure. He's glad he didn't know.
You’re right first off. But the way I remember it, and I’m old and used to do A LOT of drugs, it was originally written about Lane Frost the professional bull rider that was killed riding the baddest bull at the time. One of the greatest videos ever is of his best friend riding for 8 seconds but staying on and riding for 8 more second for Lane and the whole place knew what was going on after a couple seconds and were going crazy.
This song always gives me heartache and tears.😭 I was Married for 25 years and in one day it all ended. But I wouldn’t change a thing…because it was all real. Even the end was. 😢
The love fell apart, yet he had no regrets; he'd rather go through the pain than to never have had that love at all....SO glad you enjoyed this song. I think that most of us feel this way about someone in our lives.
I went to a funeral in 1989 and the two songs played were "Wind beneath my Wings" and "The Dance". Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all . . . .
I lost my husband 5 years ago. I miss him everyday and the pain of loosing him remains just below my carefully maintained facade of being alright. Like the song says "I could have missed the pain but I'd have had to miss the dance." Even knowing how our lives together ended, I wouldn't change a thing. I had 29 years with the person who was my best friend, my heart, my soul, myworld, and my soulmate.
Not a wedding song! Love this song, one of my oldest friends loved it and since she passed away, all I can do is cry when I hear it. One of the saddest love songs ever!
I buried my husband to this. Him? A 7th grade drop out. Farm boy. Me? A Museum Docent graduated from University of Michigan with Honors. 15 fantastic love filled years later, 3 children and a life full of acceptance, unconditional love he got up one morning, punched in at Ford Motor Assembly line in Dearborn Mich and was dead when he hit the floor. No warnings. No good byes. No anything except... 10,591 days ago. No, Polo, This is not a wedding song by any means. It's a verbalized heartache.
Yep Polo Garth jas is own style way.... gotta check out I've got friends in low places, now along this song theme, If tomorrow never comes, Thunder rolls 2 . Great reaction 😅surprizwd you ! Cheers
I have always loved this song. It illustrates the fact that you have to endure both the sorrow and the joy, which are both facets of every journey, even in grief and death.
"Rodeo", "Papa Loved Mama", "The Thunder Rolls", "We Shall Be Free", or if you want beautiful sadness, because I know you like that kinda stuff, "If Tomorrow Never Comes", "Unanswered Prayers", "Learning to Live Again"
This song was played at my little brothers funeral and will always bring a tear to my eye. I could have missed the pain but Id a had to miss the honor of knowing him at all and calling him brother. ( the dance )
Chills every time! I love this song. There are so many of his songs that where there during various important times in my life. Thanks for checking it out Polo.
This one and If tomorrow never comes were the songs that were etched in my some for my parents. I was 18 my mom had a brain tumor it was cancer and I watched my dad lose his best friend and she made him dance with her to these two songs. My mom adored Garth!!
You have to have the video played and see the heartbreaking story of those we have loved. It shows the two Kennedys, MLK, Lane Frost died from a bull he rode, and many others. Very tragic.
I’ve have loved this song since it came out, beautiful!!❤ I went to one of his concerts 33 years ago and 9 months pregnant I might recommend watching the video for this song, you will be glad you did. It’s impactful to say the least
It's a fact that at some point every relationship we have is going to end. Rather than dwelling on the end, for which we have no control over, enjoy the in between. Make sure those you love and cherish know your feelings. I had my husband for 37 years before cancer took him in 2022. As much as it hurt to lose him and still hurts, I would do it all over again for that 37 year dance.
Every damn time I hear this song I have tears because I lost her so long ago. This is one of the most pwerful lost love songs I have ever heard. And I lost her over 20 years ago at the time this song was popular and still.... 😪
Living in the ATL, & practically forced into country music with our new friends... well Garth was BIG in the mid-1980's and through the 90s I played him in the those decades. Now it brings tears and I won't listen to it anymore. It's just too heartbreaking to me, a widow, 43 years of a great, happy marriage. Now, in one & unexpected moment ripped away. Nobody can imagine that pain. And that pain will never go away. Days, months, years. Always showing the STRONG mom to my daughter and her family. So my comments here, my family will never know the anguish. Thnx Polo, for giving me this platform (texting). Also, I do have wonderful memories, but they are just that. Memories 😢
So many different memories with this track! From dancing around bond fires with some of our closest friends, the ones we love, and played for the ones we lost! Timeless❤🔥
Garth has a phenomenal voice and I love this song. I am a minimalist fan of country music but there are some performers and singer/song writers that I really think are at the top of the list when it comes to creating music that makes the world come together. This song is one of them. I am an old rocker hippy flower child, heavy metal, grunge lovin' music person but I grew up and lived in New Mexico for 30 years and country western was definitely popular in the area. I saw Garth Brooks live in concert and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen!! Thanks Polo!!
I think everyone can relate to this one. :) Now for something totally different, his giant hit ***FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES*** much more fun vibe, an iconic ANTHEM. :)
While some interpret this as being about a breakup, most see it as a song about someone dying. It is not a wedding song but it is a popular funeral/memorial song.
There's a powerful video of Garth performing "The Dance" live. A lady with a bandana-wrapped head stands near the stage holding up a sign that reads "CHEMO THIS MORNING GARTH TONIGHT ENJOYING THE DANCE". What follows is touchingly amazing. No spoilers, search "Garth Brooks - The Dance - Kick Cancer's ASS!", you'll find it.
Such a beautiful song. Life’s experiences are best left not known because we might avoid that “dance”. I’m 70, and have had many dances over the years. My husband is gone now but I was there when he passed from pulmonary fibrosis. ❤❤ Thanks Polo for playing Garth
First off, this is one of those songs that really benefits from having the original and official music video with it. Doesn't absolutely need it, but for someone who doesn't exactly get what the song is about, the video fills in the blanks. Essentially, it shows clips of Martin Luther King Jr, JFK, John Wayne, the 7 crew of the Challenger space shuttle, and famous bull rider Lane Frost. All of the characters in the video are shown during the peak of their lives, but as we all know, they died. The song is about looking back at the times we were at our peak, or when someone is gone, if we could have changed anything, and how that might have made things different, for better or worse. "Our lives, are better left to chance. I could have missed the pain, but I'd have has to miss the dance". This was a time Garth Brooks was pretty much at his peak, in the late 80s and early to mid 90s, he was the presumptive king of country music, and now we've seen how the king would fall. Secondly, this song is near and dear to me, for a variety of reasons. One of them was that the song first aired on the radio just months before my first girlfriend died in an accident by a drunk driver, and was playing on the radio when I got the call. As you can imagine, it affected me pretty hard. So this song, and Garth Brooks' "If Tomorrow Never Comes" are songs that got me through that time, and other times to come down the line to present day. When my time comes to go "home", I want "The Dance" and "If Tomorrow Never Comes" played at my funeral. Lastly, I had actually met Garth Brooks in person on a street corner in downtown East Lansing. I went to E.Lansing to go shoot some pool at about 2am in the morning, and the arcade/poolhall was across the street from the Marriot hotel. I saw a line of tour busses down Albert street when I went to park, and as I was coming up the sidewalk to get to the poolhall, I saw guys hauling equipment, luggage, and bags into the hotel. As I walked by the lead bus, I man came out and said, "Hey buddy, how you doing?" and hand his hand out. I looked up at his face as I reached out to shake hands with him and then I realized it was Garth! Now, I have met celebrities before, so I don't get starstruck, but I was with Garth. We had a little small talk, and then I turned to go to the poolhall when I asked, "You want to shoot some pool?" He was gracious in declining, and just said he had to do another concert in E.Lansing for the next night and he needed to get some sleep. So I waved and went and shot a few rounds of pool. The whole time, I was saying to myself over and over, "Holy $hit, I just met Garth Brooks! And I invited him to play pool!" When I went home a couple hours later, I got a call from my dad at work, and I asked if he knew who I met that morning and he replied, "Oh, I don't know... Garth Brooks?" Apparently, my dad heard he was in town, but he knew he was one of my favorites. Anyway, that's my meet and greet with Garth. I wish I had a video camera or a voice recorder, but it was the mid 90s, and I had neither, and the fact it was me, Garth and his road crew were the only ones on that street that night, no one was around to witness it. Appreciate the reaction, and the time that you may/may not have read all this. 😆
Its not a wedding song, it is about reliving the memories that you had with someone who passed away to soon. Also talks about the pain they are feeling and they wouldn't want it any other way because they would have never spent time with that person. If they didn't want to feel the pain they would have wished they never met and spent time.
Kathy Mattea “where have you been” it’s an amazing song very sad but also very uplifting at the same time the vocals are great the song has been used by the Alzheimer’s society. It’s one of my favorited songs.🇨🇦👍🏻🇨🇦
This was the favorite song of four girls in Austin TX, and their friends. They were shot to death and burned in a yogurt shop where two of them worked. Their friends would play this song outside the yogurt shop and mournfully sing along. 1991.
Great song by Garth, one of my favorites. You should watch the music video of this song. It's absolutely tear-jerking, at least it was for me. I love your channel and reactions.
He's from Oklahoma like I am. This song is about a young man that lived very close to me in Southern Oklahoma. Lane Frost. He was a world champion bull rider that was killed by a bull at a roder. A move was made about it called 7 seconds. It's the time you had to stay on a bull to earn a score.
The first time I heard this song, at the end when there is just music...Garth talked about the song..have tried to find that as I have forgotten what he said. Wish I could find that version. I am thinking he was singing it at some event.
This was my class song the year I graduated. In a class of 250 we lost 3 or 4 t car accidents and 2 more to cancer. One of my best friends sang it at graduation and there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
Back when this song was at the top of the country charts , I was dating a girl who had a younger , 17 year old brother. He was part of a dance troupe. His troupe were on a bus heading thru mountains to a dance competition when they were hit by a semi. Two people on his bus were killed , one of which was his dance partner. He learned this song and sang it at her funeral. It wasn’t a very well known song yet , and the people at the funeral thought he wrote it specifically for his dance partner. Not a dry eye in the church.
You were close when you said "wedding song"...as a southern white representative, I speak on all of our behalfs when I say, this is the MOST played track at a southern white funeral. Tied with "go rest high on that mountain" by Vince Gill
A young man with just a guitar and an amazing voice sang this song at my Uncles funeral, as requested by my Uncles only daughter. Not a dry eye at the grave side.
This song was written with a nod to Keith Whitley in mind and sung in the same way Keith sang. Keith was also an outstanding country singer. He was married to Lorrie Morgan at the time and he died far too early of complications involving alcoholism.
My best friend lost one of her beautiful sons to suicide 13 yrs ago. She chose this song at his funeral. I cry every time. Then 3 yrs later i lost my eldest son. Sigh. Too much 💔
Great reaction! ...good luck not getting a strike against it though... reaction's to his song are rare for this reason. Though I don't agree with his politics, he has many phenomenal songs!
I'm not a country music fan but The Dance is a great song. Other songs you would probably like are Thunder Rolls and Unanswered Prayers. Although Garth is a good singer, I wouldn't compare him to Celine Dion. Garth Brooks is married to Trisha Yearwood, who is also a famous country singer. My favorite song from her is Walkaway Joe. It's definitely a song that crosses over country because of how good it is. Don Henley's background vocals are featured on this song, too.
I've always believed this is about him losing someone he loves deeply through them passing. It doesnt remind me of a wedding song because it isnt about a real dance, but is about two lives and if he'd done things differently he would have missed the dance of their lives.
My wife cries whenever she hears this song. It reminds her of her deceased husband. So whenever I listen to it I have to put my headphones on so I don’t make her cry.
I agree it's not a wedding song. It's when someone dies. The video shows famous people who have passed. He shows John Wayne & Martin Luther King among others. You might want to check it out.

OMG 😢! I am so very sorry for his loss.
💞😔🫂
That poor kid must have felt something was up. So sorry for all concerned.
He is with Jesus if he can't be with you then who else would you want to watch over your loved one no one better than JESUS 🙏❤️🇺🇲💯 !!!

Same here. I lost my husband of 25 years one New Years Eve. As much it hurts to be without him, I wouldn't trade a single step we took together.
@ Lord Bless You! 🙏🙏🙏
@@tpatrick44 Right back atcha, brother.
I lost my wife of 50 years. We were going to start living.
I feel the same way together 16 years with my ex and father of my kids. My heart still aches for the end of it all, and it ended over 10 years ago 😢
Love, Garth Brooks ❤ THUNDER ROLLS is a 10 also, Please jam that❤Love you, You ROCK💘 GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS 😇🥰
One of the best country songs ever.
I am so glad you are doing Garth Brooks. Like others have said, we think you would love "Thunder Rolls"
Make sure it's the official video for "Thunder Rolls".
This is such a beautifully sad song. Garth Brooks is so very talented. Love this song. Love your reaction!
Another rabbit hole to go down. He has a long list of major hits.
***UNANSWERED PRAYERS*** is another great one like this.
One of the best
The love fell apart, yet he had no regrets; he'd rather go through the pain than to never have had that love at all....SO glad you enjoyed this song. I think that most of us feel this way about someone in our lives.
Definitely
I'm not a big county fan, but Garth Brooks is one of the best. His live performances back in the 90s had so much energy.
I went to a funeral in 1989 and the two songs played were "Wind beneath my Wings" and "The Dance". Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all . . . .
💙💙Garth has a HUGE catalog worthy of diving into. I hope you do. He's Amazing!!! ❤❤
I lost my husband 5 years ago. I miss him everyday and the pain of loosing him remains just below my carefully maintained facade of being alright. Garths one of my favorites of all time for country singer, amazing voice, great reaction. Have a great day everyone, God bless
Love the piano. Purest form of music.
Not a wedding song! Love this song, one of my oldest friends loved it and since she passed away, all I can do is cry when I hear it. One of the saddest love songs ever!
I don't see this as a wedding song either.
Definitely not
Agree-definitely not a wedding song! I love this song and it gets me every time I hear it.
Exactly. This song is about serious loss and regret.
This is a great place to start. His voice is angelic. This is a beautiful gift under rotting leaves.
Deep rabbit hole with Garth!
I think 🤔💭 that POLO would enjoy *"Standing Outside the Fire"* 🔥... I believe that could make the 4Runner playlist
"Rodeo", "Papa Loved Mama", "The Thunder Rolls", "We Shall Be Free", or if you want beautiful sadness, because I know you like that kinda stuff, "If Tomorrow Never Comes", "Unanswered Prayers", "Learning to Live Again"
The River
Garth Brooks is an amazing artist! Definitely a great song to start with when getting into his music

All time favorite. True for me, all the pain was always worth the experience when all was said and done.

I describe his voice as strong but sensitive. He always tells a story in his music.
Garth is amazing!
Awesome
There’s another video with this song that shows various people we’ve lost, including the people that were on the Challenger space shuttle.
It felt like this guy was the Country Music Elvis when he was at his peak.
Two of my favourites of his are his performance of The Change (AMA music awards in 1996). And for Christmas, The Gift. Cheers!
I never listened much to country but this is a nice heartfelt song I can relate to.
I really love Garth, but the way he broke me with this one…. Beautiful 😢❤
Friends in low shows the bawdy ass kicking side!

Glad you got the real Garth! His voice I would describe as dynamic …. Can hear the emotion
While some interpret this as being about a breakup, most see it as a song about someone dying. It is not a wedding song but it is a popular funeral/memorial song.
Beautiful song
There are so many wonderful genres of music.
Struggle Jennings has a remix/cover of this that’s equally astounding; the bass makes it hit different.

Rodeo
The River
What She's Doing Now 👍
One amazing song!✌🏼❤️🎶.
This was the favorite song of four girls in Austin TX, and their friends. They were shot to death and burned in a yogurt shop where two of them worked. Their friends would play this song outside the yogurt shop and mournfully sing along. 1991.
That is awful.
Ah thank you for the reaction! It reminds me I need to make a sad songs Playlist. Haha.
Definitely have to watch the video when you can
Great song by Garth, one of my favorites. You should watch the music video of this song. It's absolutely tear-jerking, at least it was for me. I love your channel and reactions.
Not a wedding song. A song of joy and loss.
Funeral song 🎵. Ive told my kids to play this then along with Elvis's Bridge Over troubled Water and Ghost's Life Eternal
Well done
I like your reactions and have been a subscriber for about a year now. Another Garth song you might like is "If Tomorrow Never Comes".
I've attended funerals where this was played
Like so many others that are commenting, this song has ties to my life that ensure I'm wrecked after just a couple bars.
I absolutely love this song!!!! He is amazing! Maybe try standing outside the fire. It's another powerful song but faster.
This song was played at my grandmas wake. Then 20 years later my cousin passed and it was also played at his funeral.
Fire reaction man 🔥
Please check out The Thunder Rolls. One of Garth's finest and one of my favorites !
This song was written with a nod to Keith Whitley in mind and sung in the same way Keith sang. Keith was also an outstanding country singer. He was married to Lorrie Morgan at the time and he died far too early of complications involving alcoholism.
This song was played at my uncle's funeral. It's still hard to hear it almost 30 years later.
You know a lot of song they are really powerful i want to know what love is by foreigner
My daughter who lost her husband of 26 years played this among the many other songs at his beautiful funeral in early October!
You have to see the video!
