when I was 26 my Dad passed from cancer, I had moved back home and helped take care of him his last 6 months alive. His last 4 days in hospital I stayed in His room with him almost non stop and awake almost the whole 4 days til he passed. When leaving the hospital parking lot and driving home this song starting playing on the radio just after pulling out..always held a lot of meaning to me about my Dad since.

I told him about this song and explained how I could have missed the pain, I would have missed the dance. He just smiled and said ok. This has me crying like it always does. My son passed away Christmas Day 2017 and we miss him so much. He was only 41, married and had a 12 year old daughter. Passed away from a virus, his heart stopped and they never got him back in time. He did everything in his life, traveled, hunted, fished got two black belts. He loved life 😢

I was married in 1982 and my wife passed away 3 years ago. This song really hits home for me. My heart still aches and I cry every day, but I can't imagine having lived without my beautiful princess. Any amount of pain would be worth the love we had.
So from the perspective of a mortician this is actually one of the top requested songs to play at a funeral. Over the years I’ve heard it a hundred times and I still tear up every time, 2nd only to TAPS!
This has been my favorite song for so long. Living without regrets. I've already told my family if something happens to me, this is the song to play at my funeral, so I totally get that
Taps were played at my Grandpas funeral as he was an army veteran. He got military honors because he had served in the army. My dad followed in his footsteps and also served in the army but he is still alive thankfully.
I worked in a Children's Hospital. You would get close to some of the families. If the child passed, often you were invited to the memorial. Like you said, The Dance was played at almost every one. It got so when I would hear the piano as the intro, I would get goosebumps, followed by crying. If I'm driving and this song comes on the radio, often I have to pull over and cry, thinking of the kids. I think the dance is life. The lines about could have missed the pain, but I'd have to miss the dance. I think the kids I worked with would never choose pain, but they have to in order to experience life. They fight to experience life.
I met my 2nd grandson around May 23rd of 2003. He was 5 weeks old. When I held him, a deep sense of love overcame me and I cried and cried. The connection was one which I had never felt. They left to go back to Tennessee a few days later. On June 12th of 2003, he died from S.I.D.S. It was the most devastating thing I had ever been through to date. This song has always been my go to song since his death. It reminds me that I was blessed to hold him if but only for a few minutes.
I understand your pain and headache. Lost our 4 day old granddaughter last June. I've never felt such pain in my life. I'm so thankful for the 4 days we had with her. Hugs from one Angel's Nana to another.

This song hits me in the heart. In 2020 I lost my husband of over 30 years. This song eases the pain by making me realize that even though "I could've missed the pain", "I'd of had to miss the dance" (a metaphor of our life). As hard as the loss has been, I wouldn't change a thing and "I'm glad I didn't know how it all would end". We Lived, we Loved and it was wonderful and free. Live each day fully and be present, we're all on limited time.
When this song came out in ‘89 , the video that accompanied it was very moving with footage of iconic folks who had lived unique lives and had since passed. Great song, thanks!
I'm crying every time I watch the video. But when they show Christa McAuliffe, and the crew smiling and waving as the walk to the Challenger, my heart just breaks. Powerful song, powerful video.
When he sings this live, the audience ALWAYS sings with him. Has done that since the 90s. Everyone one holds their lights up and sings. It's always a beautiful moment.
This song was played at my Grandpa's funeral in 1999. My grandma chose it as their final song for each other. This song will always hold a special place in my heart since I always think of them when it comes on. Absolutely beautiful songwriting and song in general. The piano at the end always makes me tear up
Garth Brooks basically created Stadium Country. He’s the first country artist who produced his concerts like a pop/rock show. He had pyrotechnics, rain, and a show unlike any other seen in the genre. He created the giant show that’s now a stadium country concert staple. He was a true innovator in business as well as in music.
Saw him live in LA. No opening band. High energy. Beautiful woman everywhere in the crowd. Probably the most high feeling from a live show I've ever felt.
Many years ago my baby sister died from cancer. I took care of her the last months of her life and i have some very beautiful memories of her during those few months. I wouldn't have missed it for the world .
I’ve seen him in concert 5 times and he always closes the show with this before the encore and he rocks the house again as long as we can cheer and keep him out on the stage. It’s infectious.
I got divorced the Year this song came out. It played on the radio over and over and over again and while I grieved what I had lost and my unfulfilled expectations, this song carried me through to the awareness that it wasn't all bad, and in spite of the end I was better for it because it all had purpose.
Being a bit older now. This song always brings to mind the life I've lived, who I've lived it with and have lost. And wouldn't trade any of my life's experiences good ,bad and routine for anything. The only thing worth having through life is the memories you make along the way.
This is my go-to song for any hard thing in life, especially the loss of loved ones. It's a reminder to go ahead and take the chance (almost certainty) of pain in order to experience the joy. People pass, relationships don't always last, serious health issues arise, life is freakin' hard, but worth it, so enjoy the ride! I LOVE this song. Love it. (FYI: You do have an echo going on.)
You picked a good one! Garth is one of the very best. Some of the best Country music there is, comes from the 80s and 90s! Great Era in Country music with so many household names coming on the scene and timeless classics. Definitely has a different feel than Country from the 50s, 60s, and 70s which is fantastic too. You know Country music is often referred to as Two Chords and the Truth. Its always great songwriting, sung with soul and passion with great messages that stay with you. Often great life advise.
I can't share much of the journey / friendship right now. One of my best friends, Jacque battled cancer for the last five years. The last 8 weeks I had to pick her up and carry to her wheel chair, help her stand in the bathroom, things she hated but was grateful I was willing to help her with. I started to tease her that after all this time she finally would dance with me as we took stutter steps to and from the bed, chair, toilet, or her lift chair. She feared it was too much and we would fall. I swore to her I would never let that happen, I would never drop her. On the 14th at 6:30 she was struggling I asked if she needed to go to the ER ... a pause .. yes ... I said okay we need to get you dressed ... shockingly she said she didn't care about putting pants on. We got to the ER, I helped her stand and they picked her up and placed her on the bed in the ER. I thanked for yet another dance. 7 hours later after settling her in ICU they told her sister she wasn't expected to leave ICU ... her sister called me before calling the family. Two days later she asked me to find a last gift to her sister, she accepted her fate with dignity and grace. As she always did she put others first ... their bond was special ... asking to find something for her to give was an honor with a lot of responsibility. On Tuesday the 20th I delivered and had to help her give it as she was too weak to lift the package. I shared a few special words with her, told her I would see her soon ... watched a tear form and she closed her eyes feigning sleep. I realize now she couldn't watch me leave the room. I was honored to be called her friend, even more so to be one of the 24/7 care givers. She kept saying she hated being a burden, every time I told her honestly it was an honor. I couldn't look back, I was hoping to see her the next day but feared I wouldn't. 7:15 the next morning her sister called she had passed after finally falling asleep after a very rough night. I'm still in a bit of shock but damn straight I wouldn't of wanted to miss the dance with her. My message to everyone ... EMBRACE THE DANCE it may not always be fun, but every second is worth it, IT IS LIFE!
The original video to this song is so incredibly moving. You should watch that when you get a chance. It pays a beautiful tribute to some great people we have lost.
It’s like that saying, “It’s better to have Loved and lost, than to have never Loved at all”. The journey of life is worth it, because of the love we have for others. Sometimes its best to not know how things will turn out.
This is my MOST favorite song and Garth is the perfect singer for this! I have his CD and play this and “If Tomorrow Never Comes! So moving with special messages 🎶🎶❤️❤️
Hell yeah! This is cool watching you go down the Garth road! One of my all-time favorite artists for sure! This was his studio version. Not live. Love the break down! Garth always makes you go deep when you listen to the lyrics! "If Tomorrow Never Comes", "Unanswered Prayers", "Mom" are 3 other Garth songs along this line....
Just saw this video a year late. But this song came out not long after I lost my husband of 25yrs I didn't ever think of being a widow at 43. It really hit me hard when I heard this song. It can still bring tears. I have been remarried now for 26 yrs. The song is beautiful.
Garth brooks was the king of country … you couldn’t get any better of a person ever… he gave away 5 vehicles and money and I believe a trip as well to the 100 millionth ticket holder… look it up.. the only country person to ever do that in history… some singer tried to copy him but they couldn’t… it didn’t go over well so no one else has ever done it … and probably never will….
Another Garth song that I think is underrated is The River. I love how Garth songs have deep meaning. I think he changed Country music and is one of the best ever musicians.
This song is more about would you change your path in life if you knew how it was going to end either for the good or the bad or would you still go down the same road.
This song is the definition of better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. You should listen to Kelly Clarkson's rendition of this song at the Kennedy Center Honors (honoring Garth).
I'm in stage 4 COPD with not much time left in my life. This song and MICHAEL BOLTON doing when I'm back on my feet again are 2 songs that ease my pain. Do Michael Boltons song and you will see what gives me strength. Do the live version. Happy New Year to you both. God Bless
Honestly the "you don't like country but still like Garth Brooks" thing is legit. In '97 he played in Central park with an attendance of over 1 million people. He was honestly the biggest artist in the world for a time.
Hmm, those of us who are serious country music fans put Garth low on our list. He ain't no Alan Jackson, George Straight, Merle Haggard or Vern Gossdin. We wouldn't know him at all if it weren't for "Friends in low places" that someone else wrote.
@@janethunter8741 Regardless of whether or not "country purists" accept him is irrelevant to the fact that at one point he was the biggest recording artist in the world.
That's because many people have no taste. He tried to change to rock like Taylor swift and made a fool of himself. I like some of his songs, but I don't care for his voice. But, then again, I lean more towards bluegrass, and I love the older country artist who have kept country, country.
@@janethunter8741 Just let people like what they like. "The world has bad taste because a multi-platnum artist isn't what I like." C'mon now. He's always kinda been pop-country, and that's fine. Don't yuck other peoples yum.
@@TheSyncos it's a free country but country music is struggling to stay country and that's a shame because pure country is poetic and beautiful. ALL the synthetic accompaniment is really taking away from its beauty. There are very few musicians today who stick to guitar, fiddle, mandolin, even banjo and piano and go with sound tracks. Garth Brooks has just left a bad taste in true country music fans mouths. You can listen to whomever you want but we need to fight for pure country. It's not just music. It's a heritage.
Wait omfg I think Ali would TOTALLY appreciate the entire Ethel Cain album ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ because the entire thing is haunting! A good example of someone with hauntingly beautiful music that you may know is Lana Del Rey
God, this reminds me of the 90's, Hangin out at my favorite local music bar, This killer local country band playing, slow dancing to this song... MAN I miss those times. Thunder Rolls was another of Garth's songs they played.
The love of my life would always ask me to sing this at karaoke. On 12/3/23 she left this earthly life and took my heart and soul with her. This song will always be very special to me.
When this song came out, we were friends with a group of people that included rodeo cowboys. One of our friends said he would never live to be 30. Somehow he knew. I don’t know if he thought it would be from rodeoing but instead at the age of 29, he was hit head on in a vehicle accident. The Dance was played at his funeral. My cousin who is part of the group was country DJ and also a photographer for Cheyenne Frontier Days. He just died last December 2022. Hearing this song again connects it to him now in my heart. Here’s to you Brad and Dennis❤️
Beautiful song with a beautiful message. Since you liked this may I suggest 2 songs from Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit? The songs are called Vampires and Elephant.
Hey guys. This is from his debut album " Garth Brooks" in 1989. He would turn country music 🎶 on it's head! He did and sang stuff and did stuff that nobody else was doing at the time. He has won entertainer of the year numerous times, broke sales records, attendance records, and puts on a show like nobody's business!! I've been lucky enough to have seen him twice. In 1989 and again in 1994 or 5 here in AZ. He is the most down to earth guy you'll probably ever meet. He is considered a legend. Glad you are checking him out. I am new to your channel and will be checking out more of your reactions.
Garth has ended two of the concerts I have been to with this song. It always brings me to tears.. as the atmosphere in one of his concerts is so incredibly special.
I've always loved Garth. He's the king of country in my humble opinion. I'm sure there are those that disagree, but he has so many great songs. He has whole albums that you can just put it in and push play. Garth is the man.
Not just about losing someone from death or illness.. But also divorce or ending of relationships.. Even if it ends and causing pain.. That doesn't take away from the blessings of the relationship.
This is the song that made me fall in love with country. I heard this on a soundtrack from a movie and oh my gosh my heart and the words just spoke to me. This will forever be one of my favorite songs.
While y’all are on the Garth kick, you’ve got to check out, “If Tomorrow Never Comes.” I think with your expression of love for your wife & children, it fits you perfectly! I’ve already arranged for it to be played at my funeral. In a good way. ❤️ Keep up the great work!
Our sons were incredibly close to my parents. At 28, our younger son decided to change careers and recieved a full scholarship to film school where he recieved a degree in film directing. The last trip my mother was able to take before her death was to his graduation. As a way of honoring her, he created a video of her life and used "The Dance" as he showed pictures of he and his brother.
Great reaction to a great song! Please consider reacting to "Remember When" and "The Older I Get" both by Alan Jackson. For a lighter song consider "Drinkin' problem" by Midland. I really think yall will both enjoy them. Thanks in advance.
This is the song my dad asked us to play at his funeral. He was murdered a few years after telling us this, so we did. It always reminds me of him. I recently saw Garth live in concert and this song played exactly at 11:11pm which is significant to me. Was really beautiful.
This song was the first thing my father heard after my mother gave birth to me in 1994. She died after battling Covid in 2021. One of the first things he wanted to hear was this song
I have seen him in concert twice. Once early in his career and once just a few years ago. Where he gets his energy I have no idea but he puts on a great show.
When my dad was dying of Cancer he asked me to play this at his funeral... 2 weeks later when he died and I had to fly back to California (he died while I was on the plane), I FORGOT that he asked for this song and while planning the funeral I picked other songs to play. It wasnt until weeks later that I realized my mistake and this song haunts me. Every time I hear it I cry for my mistake. It is one of my biggest regrets in life and though everyone tells me my dad forgives me I have yet to forgive myself.
I always loved this song, but when I went thru my divorce 14 years ago...... wow, it really hits........ Not only does "the dance" stand for the good times we had, the dance at the wedding, but it is my wonderful daughter that I have! wow......... in tears everytime I hear this song
Your wife had it right hauntingly beautiful..I was 19 when this song came out and that's the description that popped in my head...hauntingly beautiful!
The dance is by every measure Brooks’ most successful song. The nearly accidental way it came to be is the greatest story. You all would enjoy the two part documentary GARTH. It’s so good
I never knew exactly how to describe this song, but "hauntingly beautiful" seems spot on. I've always said this is one of the songs I want plsyed at my funeral. Thank you for your channel.
I buried the love of my life. It was the most heartbreaking thing I ever had to do. This man gave me the highest high in my life and the lowest low. I wouldn't have changed a thing. I had this song played during his funeral. I couldn't put my feelings in words. The dance did.
I only started listening to country music because it was the only station I could get in the building where I worked. My brother was a Garth Brooks fanatic and I did not understand why. Then I saw Garth perform one of his songs live on an awards show. Totally changed my prospective. I have never been to one of this concerts but love to watch his live performances.
Another proud Okie! I saw Garth long before he was huge when he played shows in Stoolwater Oklahoma when I was a student at OU. Then I went to see Garth in Tulsa in 2001 and this guy is such an amazing artist. My grandmother played this song at my grandfather’s funeral as well as George Jones’ He Stopped Loving Her Today. The day we laid my grandfather to rest I had to rush home afterwards to put on my tux to go to my senior prom 95 and later at the prom this song was played and I unfortunately collapsed. It broke my heart and still to this day chokes me up. There aren’t many artists that can control a crowd like Garth I’d compare him with Freddy in his ability to control the crowd. This is from the 90s the album was No Fences.
My grandson died at a year old due to complications to a premature birth. It was hard but we wouldnt have changed a thing because we would have missed the dance. A year with him was better than no time at all. We almost list him and my daughter the day of his birth. Thank God we still have her and she had two more wonderful children.
There was a sportscaster in Phoenix (Steve Pacente) that was killed in a helicopter crash. This song was sung at his funeral and gives it (to me) a whole new meaning.
Many of the comments here are beautiful. Thank you for uplifting me here on the last day of 2023.

sorry for your loss. I was 27 years old when my dad passed from a major heart attack these types of songs remind me of my dad
you should listen to this song "Hey Dad" by Matt Stillwell. FYI it will make you cry it made me cry.
This was better than the song picked for the end of 8 seconds, the movie about Lane Frost, the bull rider
Garth Brooks went to high school with my ex husband's mom. She said he was a dork that carried his guitar everywhere but that even she will admit that he completely changed country music and opened it up to the world. He is also considered the best showman in country music.
Its funny cos even he admitted he was a dork in High School. Certainly loves what he does.
Eh, he's still a dork😊
King George but garth did open the door for big country

Garth Brooks basically created Stadium Country. He’s the first country artist who produced his concerts like a pop/rock show. He had pyrotechnics, rain, and a show unlike any other seen in the genre. He created the giant show that’s now a stadium country concert staple. He was a true innovator in business as well as in music.
Saw him live in LA. No opening band. High energy. Beautiful woman everywhere in the crowd. Probably the most high feeling from a live show I've ever felt.
They mixed a version of this when Dale Earnhardt died. Heart wrenching😢
Unanswered Prayers is one song from Garth you may enjoy also.
Yes, one of my favorites! Another one is "The River".
That was my wedding song
GOD answers all prayer
YES NO WAIT
GOD didn't promise you a Yes
I got divorced the Year this song came out. It played on the radio over and over and over again and while I grieved what I had lost and my unfulfilled expectations, this song carried me through to the awareness that it wasn't all bad, and in spite of the end I was better for it because it all had purpose.
Very very touching. Sorry that happened but thanks for this note.
My mom felt that way. My birth father was not good to her but without that experience she would have missed out on being my mom ❤️
Wyoming
Being a bit older now. This song always brings to mind the life I've lived, who I've lived it with and have lost. And wouldn't trade any of my life's experiences good ,bad and routine for anything. The only thing worth having through life is the memories you make along the way.
Garth talks about this song like it's his favorite child. It can mean so many different things to so many people. It's one of my favorites.
Thank you for the tears this morning. Such a emotional song for me. I lost my husband to cancer so this hits me hard. Great reaction.
This was played at my cousins funeral in 1990... Cry everytime I hear it. God Bless You
This is my go-to song for any hard thing in life, especially the loss of loved ones.
Describing the meaning of "haunting" in that context isn't easy, it's true. You two are great together.
Beautiful sorry. Thank you for sharing it. Aaaand... I'm in tears all over again.
I'm so sorry you had to experience that. But it's all in the dance. Blessings to you.
The original video to this song is so incredibly moving. You should watch that when you get a chance. It pays a beautiful tribute to some great people we have lost.
My Dad loved this song. After his passing, my brother stood in for him as the father-daughter dance at my wedding
He definitely sounds just like this live. He's an amazing entertainer 💕
Ty for playing this beautiful song....I needed to hear it today.❤👍
The meaning of hauntingly is something that is so profoundly emotional or meaningful that it stays with you, hence hauntingly
This song means so much to me. It’s now 2023 and my husband and I would have celebrated our 19th anniversary today. Thank you guys for this.
There’s no going back now, Sebs. More Ali!
Would love to see her react with you to The Warning and get her feedback on a female sister band.
“Haunting” basically means it’s something that will stick with you in a melancholy way forever
Another Garth song that I think is underrated is The River. I love how Garth songs have deep meaning. I think he changed Country music and is one of the best ever musicians.
My brother insisted this song be played @ our Step-Dad’s Funeral. It described my Mom’s, & our Stepdad’s Marriage. It was beautiful. ❤️
This song is more about would you change your path in life if you knew how it was going to end either for the good or the bad or would you still go down the same road.
A hauntingly beautiful song is one which still leaves the feelings of it touching your heart and soul after the song is over.
This song is the definition of better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. You should listen to Kelly Clarkson's rendition of this song at the Kennedy Center Honors (honoring Garth).
You just started down a deep rabbit hole with Garth been listening to him since 92 and love it even my kids love his music
If you get the chance buy his live videos and see him give the audience what they want pure fun
Garth is a legend in his time. Want to hear a fun fast one…. Papa loved mama is a great song with fun beat & lyrics🎉🎉🎉
Hauntingly beautiful... emotionally touching, tugs at heart strings, but moving and amazing at the same time!
I'm in stage 4 COPD with not much time left in my life. This song and MICHAEL BOLTON doing when I'm back on my feet again are 2 songs that ease my pain. Do Michael Boltons song and you will see what gives me strength. Do the live version. Happy New Year to you both. God Bless
Unanswered prayers one of my favorites
Hauntingly beautiful - both captivating and unsettling at the same time
Wait omfg I think Ali would TOTALLY appreciate the entire Ethel Cain album ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ because the entire thing is haunting!
Please check out “ AINT Going Down Til the Sun Comes Up” Stadium Version…. You’ll love it!!!
The love of my life would always ask me to sing this at karaoke. On 12/3/23 she left this earthly life and took my heart and soul with her. This song will always be very special to me.
Now if you are doing a garth brooks dive you need to check out friends in low places the live version.
Shameless is still my favorite song of his.
Shameless is certainly one if his songs that moves me the most and it was written by Billy Joel…
Absolutely his most beautiful song and he’s been rated among the top country songs of all time
Beautiful song with a beautiful message.
Keep up the great work!
When something haunts you, it follows you around and keeps returning to your mind over time
You guys deff need to do "If Tomorrow never comes" by Garth
Agree
Yes, I love The show Yellowstone, another greatest ever
This is the song my dad asked us to play at his funeral. He was murdered a few years after telling us this, so we did. It always reminds me of him. I recently saw Garth live in concert and this song played exactly at 11:11pm which is significant to me. Was really beautiful.
This song was the first thing my father heard after my mother gave birth to me in 1994. She died after battling Covid in 2021. One of the first things he wanted to hear was this song
Please get headphones if you need to hear yourselves instead of using a speaker. The echo/borderline feedback is pretty annoying.
I have seen him in concert twice. Once early in his career and once just a few years ago. Where he gets his energy I have no idea but he puts on a great show.
Welcome to America may she treat you well and keep you both healthy and strong
Just caught up to this reaction...omg this song gives me chills and makes me misty every single time.
Oh honey, life is too short for regrets. I know your Dad doesn’t really care about a song. He cared about your love for him!
Such an immortal song
Surprisingly was chosen as our class song in '05 (I voted for it but was surprised others agreed).❤
The memory of it's beauty will haunt you.
There was a sportscaster in Phoenix (Steve Pacente) that was killed in a helicopter crash. This song was sung at his funeral and gives it (to me) a whole new meaning.
The dance is all of the good times they had together he's calling that the dance
