great vid! I have the same controller, but one thing that really tripped me up for a bit: if you have a sample selected for melodic play in the 'SEQUENCE' tab, it will override your mapping and play just that pad even in the 'SAMPLE' tab view. You need to go back to SEQUENCE and return to the sample grid then things will work as expected. Far from obvious IMO. Also sadly your pads won't be mapped to the selected scale in PERFORMANCE, and it seems you can't set it to control whichever sample bank is selected on-screen either? That's unfortunate because I'd like to have the other scenes on my Nanopad open to mappings for other instruments (or favorite scales since Koala can''t remap them). If only the Key/Scale settings on the Nanopad would remap the pads instead of just the touchpad it would make my life much easier! :)

I just bought this app and I'm really impressed! But only one thing I don't understand - when I connect my nanoPad2 or Akai MPD218 - why positions of pads in this apps doesn't match witch positions of my external pads?? All is like upside down?
I keep coming back because the way you say “ KOALA SAMPLER” makes me feel like I’m about to be tortured in a Japanese prison for being too gear reliant and it scares me but I like it.
Have you tried it with the Arturia BeatStep? It has 16 knobs and 16 Pads. That’s exactly the 16 knobs for effects and 16 pads. It about $100 but that would be well worth it if it works.
I always found it ironic that you were an apple user in spite of being so anti-proprietary hardware with paywalls, but it's funny to see you acknowledge how greedy they are. It's mostly the stuff built on iOS SDK by devs in the creative space that pushes the app market and in turn the entire brand. As an android and PC user, I can always just use a container to emulate the OS, so you can always have the best of both worlds!
Hi yeah, who doesn't love great designed products, only how much extra you feel like to pay. I also have PC and android phone, but for a laptop, from my bad experience with win10, I'd rather pay more to get a Mac.
hey playpm. i was looking for a solution to get punch in fx like the teenaage engineering pocket operators. you got 16fx that u can punch in and sequence the on off of the fx. that are fx like lfo on a filter stutter distortion and many more. i tried many vst solutions for that and made my own ableton racks but it never worked as nice aas it worked on my po 12. aaany ideas how i can make my own punch in fxrack thats actually fun to play and lets me remix whatever i put through it?

@@playpm thank you for the fast answer!! I didn't find a keyboard mode, but I'll check it out later. Thanks so much! Edit: found it! It's really fun to send midi notes from Pure Data into Koala. The app seems to be overwhelmed and falls apart a bit, but it's still useable!
Hi there, this is a really great video and demonstrates is functions well. I'm just wanting to know of this is easy enough to use with android/Samsung products.? Thanks
This video is little bit dated, koala has updated its midi mapping function, which is way more easier to map buttons no matter which platform and brand you use.
Playpm thanks for including android options. It would be great if you mentioned alternatives for android in your other videos as well, wherever possible. Thanks for the great content.
Hey man very knowledgeable, I want to hook up the akai lpd8 controller to my koala sample, if you have time can you answer this question. “ so your midi device has to be set up on your Mac or pc before you star my using it with koala.? Hope I hear back, thanks
First thanks for the tutorials they are really great! Koala is now a big part of my workflow where I can sit in bed and chop samples on my phone and get beats down before I bring them to my sp404sx for effects! I have a question though! I am waiting for my lightning to usb camera adapter cable so I can plug in my mpk mini but it has just dawned on me… with no aux on my phone I won’t be able to hear what I play through headphones! I didn’t get the official Apple cable so it has only one usb and not two. Does the Apple one or any you know of have either an aux on the adapter or a lightning that can have headphones plugged in and not just for power? Thank you!
Appreciated man, you can search with keyword "apple headphone charging usb 3 in 1" on amazon, there're already lots of 3rd party solutions you can buy. I'm in China, these adaptors are all over the place.
Nice! Just got the Koala sampler after seeing your videos. How is the sensitivity of the nano pads like? Do you have to press too hard to trigger the samples?
Hello. I downloaded your Koala workflow file into Korg Kontroler and export it into Nanopad2. I acts like a keyboard and is not triggering samples. Do I have to MIDI map manually? Thank you.
I know koala can sync with pocket operators, it separates output channels to a mono music and mono click track, so you might need to buy an adaptor to separate stereo output from your phone to achieve this.
dope one man! Could you also do a sequencing tutorial on Koala with tips? saw a couple of Dibiase Instagram stories and I don't understand how does he make beats with over 50 bars with transitions, variation and stuff.
That’s why he is the MAN!!! Lol, will do, but just for a quick tip, he might already composed different loop scene sequences and use the drag n drop onto an empty sequence pad then choose add to end to build the whole song ;)
Eimantas Leknickas What I do sometimes is start with the drums and create 2 or 3 more variations. Then in a empty sequence,I try come up with riffs or sample chops and then see and then drag one my drum loops to another empty sequence and mix in my riffs or chops to see if works,if it does, then I can do a full track with transitions using the fx.But in all honesty, all you need is a killer loop and abuse stutter,it's so fun!The possibilities are endless;)
Hi Michael, thank you so much for the sharing and hints to Koala. I got the akai mpk mini mk3, but when I map the pads to Koala, it come out different notes of the sample. When I press another pad in mpk mini3, it still play the same sample but different notes. It is not trigger to play each sample respectively. .is that my problem only..?
Gotta make sure the midi mapping setting in your Koala is off. But hey, this video is dated, you can use Koala's new midi mapping function to map for your controller with ease.
Please help😭😭😭 I have a Launchpad mini controller and also an Akai lpd8 midi controller hooked up to a usb hub than to my iPad. For some weird reason when I press the Launchpad to control the Launchpad app to trigger samples it also triggers my samples from koala sampler which I thought I “midi learned” mapped to the Akai controller. I’m heavily frustrated and asking for some help. Thanks… your videos has helped tremendously
Koala doesn't care which device is sending the midi signal, say if they all send cc 17, it takes all. You can re-route your controllers in aum, if you have to use both at the same time.
Hi - Is that an official Apple USB camera adapter? I haven’t seen one with headphone jack before. That is exactly what I need. Can you let me know? Thanks!
@@playpm thanks for the reply! I’m just worried Apple would say it wouldn’t work, not recognizable. This accessory is not supported. But that is what I need! Thanks!
Yeah, there're smarter manufactures here in China which got some workaround solutions like this one, fk Apple for removing 3.5mm headphone jack, money is what they're chasing for.
Can u record on nanopad by hitting pads also can u record vinyl samples into the Android phone thru the nano pad does it have sound card and can u trim n slice using the Korg nano, love your channel
Thanks for the loving man, nanopad is only a controller, it doesn't have sound card in it, it's like a keyboard or mouse for a computer, it controls your device.
K thanks so I would just set up the pads thru app n nano just triggers em,does that mean if I set a pead onn app with a release setting or loop or one shot when I hit Korg pad it will function how I have it set up thru koala
Bank switch midi mapping hasn't got supported, might need to wait a little bit. But if you got bluetooth qwerty keyboard, you can use left and right arrow to switch banks.
For pad it’s doable, it has attack n release for every sample pad, but for plucky sound, I think you might need to do it on a synth outside of koala, or sample pluck noise and released note separately then mix them in koala.
I see, I suggest fine tune your sound outside of koala, for me I mainly use the koala attack to smooth out the sample start, I think it is not powerful enough for a proper sound design.
I can't seem to get either my MPK mini nor MPD 32 to map. Although it works with other softsynths, could it be failing because it's 3rd party, not Apple connector?
I need help. I have a Android Phone with koala sampler with just one usb c Port. I need Power for the Phone and the Controller like the akai mpd and also the 3.5mm jack output to send the Samples to a p.a. or Mixer. What would be the best hub or cable solution? Has someone a setup like this that works fine?
Please help I have my whole bands show I created in koala and I have the irig groove pad controller help me map it out so the buttons on my screen match up to the groove pads the buttons don’t match up when I hit the first pad on the groove controller it’s not playing the first pad on the koala app I need them to sync up please help thanks

@@playpm oh snap..my bad. You sound and look like my Japanese cousin. Back to the midi mapping. What if koala is loaded into a DAW like cubasis? Is it still universal cos I've had to start over a few times. Might ask Elf, see what's up. Keep up the good work.
Question: if I just hook up a midi keyboard do I still need to use a computer to assign the keys or is it automatically going to trigger from middle C and up chromatically. I don’t have a computer anymore. Just iOS devices.

K thanks so I would just set up the pads thru app n nano just triggers em,does that mean if I set a pead onn app with a release setting or loop or one shot when I hit Korg pad it will function how I have it set up thru koala
Yes, hitting nanopad is just like hitting buttons on screen, only difference is nanopad is velocity sensitive and phone screen is not.
I can’t seem to find out how to midi map to change banks a to c on the fly with my controller?
Bank switch midi mapping hasn't got supported, might need to wait a little bit. But if you got bluetooth qwerty keyboard, you can use left and right arrow to switch banks.
@@playpm aww thank you man
I’m sure they will do it up 🥊
Can or do you know how to create a pad or pluck from a recorded synth sound or sound create with mouth or another source? Since there’s no ADSR?
For pad it’s doable, it has attack n release for every sample pad, but for plucky sound, I think you might need to do it on a synth outside of koala, or sample pluck noise and released note separately then mix them in koala.
playpm I tried but I can’t get the note to get that rise sound or sound like it’s taking longer to reach sustain level sound like a pad has
I see, I suggest fine tune your sound outside of koala, for me I mainly use the koala attack to smooth out the sample start, I think it is not powerful enough for a proper sound design.
playpm ok thanks for your help
I can't seem to get either my MPK mini nor MPD 32 to map. Although it works with other softsynths, could it be failing because it's 3rd party, not Apple connector?
It might be the midi signal routing problem, you can try kill all other background soft synths or re-route midi signal into Koala in AUM.
Can you use a Novation launch control xl as a midi controller for koala?
Yes I think so, xl is really flexible.
This or the akai lp8 is this the best option in your opinion for a controller for koala ?
I don't like pads on lp8, they're stiffer than nano pads imo.
Hey man, just found your channel, its really helpful thank you. Would you be happy to upload a save of this tune so I could play around with it?
Lucky you that I found the project file, go grab it: www.mediafire.com/file/1cg8s4bj0me2ozi/Midi_Controller_Tutorial.koala/file
Can you make a Nanopad2 config for the Koala Sampler in portrait mode? I keep trying but it errors. Your landscape file works flawlessly.
I think both portrait and landscape mode share the sames midi mapping file, really have no idea what going on there :(
Please help I have my whole bands show I created in koala and I have the irig groove pad controller help me map it out so the buttons on my screen match up to the groove pads the buttons don’t match up when I hit the first pad on the groove controller it’s not playing the first pad on the koala app I need them to sync up please help thanks
Try set midi mapping mode on in koala then map your controller.
Ive tried setting up the nanopad2 but it’ll only play one sample chromatically 🤷🏻♂️
Maybe you're in koala's keyboard mode? Checkout the keyboard button in sequence page.
Hi Michael,...i wonder can i connect my AKAI MPK Mini MK3 to my Android Phone and Koala and get it to work ?,..I have an OTG adapter already,...
Just tried, yes they can work together, but I don't think mk3's rotary knobs work well with koala, it's hard to know what parameters they are at :(
It also depends on your android device, if it support data + power supply through type c port.
@@playpm Thank you i vill try ;)
@@playpm hi again Michael ;) I am thankful for ya´ help and video,...i connected my Akai MPK mini Mk3 and i worked parfect with Koala :D Thank you my friend
hi there! Two important questions: 1.) can it live loop external audio? 2.) can it handle MIDI over wifi? Great job with these videos btw :)
Appreciated, 1 it's not designed for live looping, so might not be simlessly for live looping. 2 it can use Bluetooth midi, but not sure how it would work with wifi.
Does the midi mapping save specifically to the different songs? Or does it save to the app regardless of what song you load. Ta
It's saved to the app, only one global mapping profile.
@@playpm quick reply. Respect. Are you based in Japan?
Greetings from China 🪴
@@playpm oh snap..my bad. You sound and look like my Japanese cousin. Back to the midi mapping. What if koala is loaded into a DAW like cubasis? Is it still universal cos I've had to start over a few times. Might ask Elf, see what's up. Keep up the good work.
Not sure, it might be conflicting with cubasis, but I think you might could route the midi signal in aum to make it separate.
i cant believe it was easier for me to get my akai lpd8 working for an app on my phone than it was for the daw on my pc.
Question: if I just hook up a midi keyboard do I still need to use a computer to assign the keys or is it automatically going to trigger from middle C and up chromatically. I don’t have a computer anymore. Just iOS devices.
Koala supports midi mapping now, you can do it entirely on your iOS device~
playpm Awesome! Thanks for responding. I dig you’re channel. Anything related to iOS music making is good for me. I do everything on iOS now. Mostly songwriting using GarageBand or Cubasis but recently I’ve been experimenting with AUM and all the apps involving synths, samplers and sequencing. I got Koala about a month ago via recommendation. Figured it was just a toy but boy was I wrong. I hadn’t even thought to hook it up to a controller until I watched your video. Keep up the great work.
Appreciate it man, stay safe and have fun~
where is pad trigger mode? the midi offset will only let u enter one value. is that where i put c#2?
Guess your controller only have trigger mode, it's good to go.
playpm noticed u said “people still using sp404 tactile “ missed that first time around 💪🏾
