I’m a huge U2 fan, I grew up listening to it thanks to my father. Greetings from Brazil, I would love to see your reaction to Mysterious ways At slane castle. It’s mind blowing

You couldn't keep Bono down back then. He was young and full of energy. As a teen, he sneaked out his second story bedroom window and down a drain pipe at night.

This was a critical performance to an audience not there to see U2 and they blew the minds of a massive audience. This gig was a 10. I was there to see them and this is right at the starting point of them taking off in a huge way. A couple years prior they first played The Woodstock in Anaheim a small club for local bands like mine. I was so happy for them this day. Another time another place. Looking at this out of context of the time and where they were at … Bono did that sort of thing all the time in the early shows..

The band (especially Larry, who is the businessman of the group) used to get pissed about these stunts.

Yeah, but the band members also understood what Bono was trying to do, even if it didn’t always come off. The Edge spoke about this in a Rolling Stone interview. He said that they might get pissed in the moment, but they would come around because they all agreed that U2 was a band about “risk.” Bono was taking risks to try to make a closer connection to the audience, which is something they believed in in principle (even if it sometimes backfired). Edge said that the “jeopardy” of Bono’s actions were what appealed to audiences. So, the risk of one of Bono’s ideas not working out-like here-is the price you pay for the many times they epically did.

Loved the reaction. I don't disagree with your opinion, and the rest of the band agrees with you ... they were not happy that he did this. Bono did an interview right after the concert (BONO INTERVIEW at US FESTIVAL 1983 U2), and admitted that he turned this song into a background soundtrack to what he was doing. He wanted to do something that got the attention of the entire audience (everyone in the back and at the hotdog stand, which he did ... at the cost of the performance).
People might get upset that I didn't pick the Red Rocks version of the song, but I wanted to see something that people may not typically see Bono do.
My favorite comment on Reddit about this one is "Vedder would've jumped".

I hope you keep feeding him more U2 live stuff to watch. There is SO MANY performances I'd love to see him react to.

Huge U2 fan. LOVE their live performances. LOVE that Bono will take certain risks to try and connect with the crowd. This is one of those that just doesn't work that well. Still good overall, but the antics didnt make it better, and also somewhat distracted from the vibe/energy of the song. Opposite, of Bad at Live Aid, where his actions more than paid off, and propelled to performance into iconic status. Also agree, that at the least, he should have waved it a few times.

There is a good example of this working (for the same song) at their Red Rocks concert from 1983. It's a lot easier for it to flop though like it did in this video. Bono sometimes does dumb shit. But I guess that's part of the charm 🤣

If you love this song you should checkout the live version of it at Chicago 2005.

FUN FACT: Bono is actually afraid of heights. But sometimes while performing when young he’d lose his head & practically have an out-of-body experience. He find himself 40 ft in the air on some rig and think WTF? How did I even get here?

Bono took big risks in his attempts to connect more closely with audiences-and they didn’t always pan out. But when they did, it was magnificent. The Live Aid performance of Bad, the Red Rocks version of this same song, and U2’s Super Bowl performance of Streets come to mind (among many examples).

Holy Crap. If Bono stage dived head first. That huge mop of 80s hair would definitely save him. They don't make crash helmet hair like that anymore. Thank God

je suis d'accord c'est plutôt spectaculaire mais vocalement les versions 85 ou 87 et même 2005 sont largement supérieures
