0:50 This was a real genuine phone call he was making to a local taxi company in Sydney, Australia. This was a staple of the encore section of the Zoo TV tour. Bono (as whatever character he was portraying) would dial out to anywhere in the world by satellite phone. He called The White House, The Vatican, Buckingham Palace, a pizza place in New York, etc.
I remember one of the pizza calls. In Auburn Hills, Michigan Bono saw an ad for Speedy Pizza during the channel hopping segment and ordered 10,000 pizzas. They actually made and delivered 100 pizzas and gave them to the audience before the encore.
0:50 Very random and very typical U2 back then,Bono has always been a hobby prankster. "Mag Fisto",quite the name to order a taxi with, hah? Bono here also channels his inner Joker as i believe this was around the time they landed the soundtrack for Batman Forever with Hold Me,Thrill Me,Kiss Me,Kill Me. Thats why you see him nail the mannerism and sudden changes of facial expressions,if anyone ask me,he nailed a very good Joker as we know him from the comics. A good proof that Bono is one of the best frontmen of a band out there, especially after we lost Michael Hutchence and Freddie Mercury before him. The Edge is that one guitarist for me,where i compare it to extremely unique voices, like f.ex Shakiras. All you need to hear is a couple of notes at the absolute max,to know its him playing. I could listen to him play guitar for hours,i just love his unique sound. In front of the Discotheque song, they were brought onto the mini stage in a (as already explained in the comments) flashy, spinning, gold looking discoball shaped as a lemon,to theyr song Lemon in a Perfecto Mix version. You have heard me say it before as a massive supporter of theese guys, the concert in Mexico City is one of the underrated concerts of theyrs, most people put alot of other concerts of theyrs above it. But for me personally this is U2 at theyr absolute best, just days after Michael Hutchence passed, one electrifying crowd embracing Bono and the guys griefing over the loss of a friend,it was like they put that entire concert down as a loving memory for Michael. U2 were on fire that entire concert, and the interaction with the crowd...... mindblowing! Of course i have suggested from that same concert theyr live performance of ONE when you come to that song in regards to reacting to U2 songs/music videos, but i cant help but recommend: U2 - New Year’s Day - LIVE FROM POP MART TOUR - MEXICO CITY 1997 #4K #REMASTERED. Adam has never sounded more amazing with his bass intro for me personally, and Bono becomes aware what several in the audience are doing during this performance, where he gives direct orders to his 2 light technicians. And the most amazing view hits you,as the crowd understand what Bono spotted and now the entire venue is doing it. Its one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen during any concert. Its just before Edges famous solo, and i believe i heard him say that this moment was one of the most memorable and most beautiful buildups he had ever gotten, when he saw what Bono did and noticed it himself. Bono is really passionate, emotional and therefor does things on the spot,so the other guys rarely knows what he is about to do lol. That often creates some of theyr most amazing moments. You owe it to yourself to see that performance too. It even carries on through Edges entire solo, but i cant say what it is,as it would go from a teaser to a spoiler. Its one of thoose "you have to watch it to feel and understand it". Soo much love in that crowd!!
The Zoo tv and Popmart tours truly were when U2 took live performance to a level never reached by anyone before or since, hopeful that they release a live video/download of the upcoming Vegas shows for us that can't afford to travel half way across the globe to see, bound to be spectacular as U2 always put on one he'll of a show.
I woke up from surgery at 16. My girl at the time brought me a new cd to listen to as i recovered, on my walkman (yeah I'm old), as I am a musician. The band was U2. I've since been on a 40 year journey with them. Been to every concert tour since 1987 most multiple. Walked down the aisle to It's a Beautiful Day!
Popmart was my first U2 show.. it blew my mind. The disco lemon just sat there to the right of the stage teasing us until after the intermission. The whole Popmart theme was to make fun of how big they were at the time. It was absurd and similar to the Beatles back in the day saying they could write about any sort of nonsense and people would buy it... Same vibe. And yes you should watch the whole Sydney Zoo TV show.. its mind blowing and the example of how a band should strive to do a stadium show, still today 30 years later.
I saw U2 at Wembley on their Popmart tour. The giant lemon mirror ball swept across the audience to the tune of Popmuzik before they came out and did Discotech. My feet barely touched the ground, but I ended up on one side of the stadium and back again over the show by osmosis, it was that intense.
That whole POP show is up on the YouToobs. That's the Mexico City show, but you can also find Chile and Sao Paolo I think. More U2 live recommendations: "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." From Rattle And Hum. Basically, a stripped down U2 jamming with a gospel choir in a Harlem church. Shot in glorious (if grainy) black & white. "Sunday Bloody Sunday." Again, from Rattle And Hum, and B&W. Played the same day as the Remembrance Day Bombing in Enniskillen, it is quite easily the most powerful version of this song committed to film. "With Or Without You." One more from Rattle And Hum, but this one's in color! Better even than the album version, imo. "Love Rescue Me." On stage with BB King during the Lovetown tour. Stellar.
They are awesome live. I first saw them for Joshua Tree tour in 1986 or 87. It wasn't this big of a show, but I swear it was like a religious experience. Bono is just so charismatic. The whole band is great live really.
MacPhisto was the European character created by Bono, while here in the U.S. it was the Mirror Ball Man, a sort of super hyped preacher of all things television.
First time commenting on your channel. I love U2. I love the fact that you seem to be loving U2. Do yourself a huge favour and do a full show reaction. ZooTV Sydney, Popmart Mexico, Slane Castle 2001 are all amazing experiences that you will never forget. Keep up the great and genuine reactions!
@@PancakeMarshmallowDude \o/ Yes! Start with ZooTV Sydney. Or maybe end with it. But yes, those three recommendations for live shows are perfect. U2 are just brilliant live, beyond compare.
The money on the stage during Lemon were Zoo Dollars, that they made for that tour. I think they were also using them as currency for all the crew, since they took everyone around the world. The PopMart Tour was the first time I got to see them live, so I have extra love for that tour =) They recorded a whole show in 3D here in Argentina, which was then shown in theatres. Sadly, they haven't released it on dvd or blu ray, cause I think you'd love it.
I just discovered your channel and I am enjoying it so much! I'm going through your U2 playlist and I was very excited that you loved "Lemon" immediately when you saw the music video! It is definitely more in the sphere of weird U2 and therefore not always appreciated, especially given how new to the band's music you were! I loved your observations in this video during the live performance of it as well, that you picked up on the beauty and emotion of it! For all of its weirdness there is also this fragile beauty to that song that always gets me. The piano during "midnight is where the day begins" takes the song to another place. Then I found out that the some of the lyrics were inspired by an old home movie Bono found of his mother where she was wearing this lemon yellow dress. It explained to me where the ache in that song comes from, the search for a loved one you've lost. Anyways, I love that you were moved by the song and that you appreciate it so much bc I think it is one of their best and most nuanced. I have seen them live around 20 times and I am so blessed to have seen them play so many of my favorite songs that there aren't too many left on my live U2 bucket list, but "Lemon" is at the top of that list. They haven't actually performed it since the ZooTV tour if I remember correctly. They are fond of the song and often have it playing on the PA before concerts, or will use remixes of it as an intro or encore break music, but they have only performed it in full a handful of times. I do hope you eventually do react to all of ZooTV Live From Sydney bc it is AMAZING and easily my favorite recorded live performance of theirs.
I love seeing you enjoy U2! ❤U2 are very, very special - in every positive way!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I love these guys too much! And yes, i am one of the lucky ones who will see these incredibly great guys live in Vegas! My heroes for a lifetime ...and beyond!❤❤❤

Great episode! Loved the choices! Can't wait for more U2 content on this channel. Highly recommend these for the next one: Raised by Wolves Live Paris 2015, Sunday Bloody Sunday Live Red Rocks 1983, Elevation Live Boston 2001 and Ultraviolet (Light My Way) live Rose Bowl 2009!

I woke up this morning and a thought struck me: "I think PMD actually reacted to The Unforgettable Fire already",so here i am looking up earlier episodes, and YUP! My bad sirHow about i give you a replacement recommendation for my blunder? I’m just watching this now and wonder if you have seen any videos from the Sphere in Vegas yet? It was epic and if those images from Fly made you feel trippy, that’s honestly nothing compared to the Sphere! 😊
@ if you watch only one video from the Sphere concert, watch “ You’re The Real Thing” The visuals were out of this world!!! Also “Atomic City” was so cool! You see the city of Las Vegas and during the song the city start getting taken down and at the end of the song only the empty desert is left. I’ve never seen anything like it. Go watch the concert movie if you can. It’s almost like you’re at the concert!

MacPhisto. What a cad. I think it's interesting to note that Heath Ledger was a big fan of U2. No guesses where inspiration for his Joker came from; the fragile fingers through the hair, the grotesque video close-ups.....
dude you are the only 1 doing U2 live......... do All U2 concerts starting in 1983 WAR tour........there are 1-2 albums prior but, no need to hear rt now... U2 WAR tour,...... then do them ALL. U won't be dissapointed. Ive been to 7 U2 shows including live FRANKLIN field University of Penn. 90's. A few shows @ MSG and Phillly! best band LIVE
U2 don't give you a concert, they give you an immersive experience. They are Master
I really hope you get to see them live one day -- from an old fan to a new one, it's WORTH IT. Whatever you have to do!

The giant disco ball was actually a giant sparkly lemon. They lugged that thing across the world for this tour 😄
And you can’t forget - it was actually mounted on a vehicle and able to drive around under its own power
U2 is ALL about the LIVE.
I love Bono's falsetto
By the way, the lyrics "This ain't no disco, this ain't no party..." at the end of "Discotheque" are from Talking Heads' "Life During Wartime".
Super excited about Vegas shows at The Sphere especially because I'm going mid October!
You needed to watch Lemon and With Or Without You together... The transition is absolutely beautiful

the Fly live from Boston is where it's at
Unforgettable Fire is a classic isn’t my guy✌️❤️
U2 knows how to do it right.
Awesome
I hope you understand the magnitude of their shows! You better hurry over to Vegas ASAP otherwise you will be left in the dark!
Note disco ball, giant lemon. A la Spinal Tap, the doorway failed to open at one show
MacPhisto. What a cad. I think it's interesting to note that Heath Ledger was a big fan of U2. No guesses where inspiration for his Joker came from; the fragile fingers through the hair, the grotesque video close-ups.....
Giand disco LEMON! Baaaaaaaahahahahaha.
I saw this tour at the LA Coliseum. It was bugfucking nuts.
dude you are the only 1 doing U2 live......... do All U2 concerts starting in 1983 WAR tour........there are 1-2 albums prior but, no need to hear rt now... U2 WAR tour,...... then do them ALL. U won't be dissapointed. Ive been to 7 U2 shows including live FRANKLIN field University of Penn. 90's. A few shows @ MSG and Phillly! best band LIVE
I love 90s U2 and Lemon, to bad this is the song that f up the Norway concert when the mechanical Lemon did not work and the band was trapped...
The Edge and 33% comment won the night!!!
❤
I ❤ u2. They’re ace live. Are you going seeing Kylie in Vegas? 😊
I won’t be able to, as far as I know, but I’d absolutely love to go! 😊
@@PancakeMarshmallowDude Always say you never know 🥰
❤🎵🙌
It was a giant Lemon, not a disco ball
haha, that Lemon video is ripped from a 5.1 DVD and mixed wrong, his vocal is not supposed to be that stupidly loud.
🍋
I don't think Lemon works live, it was a bad choice I think
Not a very good version of The Fly.
Best version of The Fly in my opinion is the one live in Boston 2001 now that really was on another level.
"My throat hurts just listening to him" so did mine :) 🥲
