  • Repairing a 15 year old dishwasher rack that has a damaged vinyl coating and is starting to rust. Finding more areas of damaged coating, working in full sunlight helped to see less bubbled up coating areas.
This is a 2007 GE Profile model dishwasher.
    Tools required:
A small carving knife and a sharp wood chisel worked best for scraping off the bubbled up vinyl coating. A small wire brush helped remove any remaining surface rust and a small paint brush to apply the rust converter.
    The process:
    Scrape off loose vinyl coating.
    Wire brush to remove rust
Treat exposed metal with rust converter:
Jenolite (or other brand) Rust Converter

Apply a vinyl repair coating over the rust converted areas:
ReRack Vinyl Dishwasher Rack Repair Coating, available in white and possibly gray:

I'm deciding between this and just getting another dishwasher on Marketplace.... It's just that my machine still works and putting another hunk of waste out there because of $350+ rack replacement is so painful to even THINK about doing... I could get a new one for a little more than two racks!!!!! It's insane! My lower rack is pretty far gone.........

I would give it a try and see if it works for you. Mine is still going a year later. I do have to touch up a few spots where I likely didn't apply enough of the coating. That coating is very thick and it's hard to see if you have applied enough to cover a given spot.

How is it holding up? Mine lasted a few months before rust came thru again. Thinking of trying to fit a commercial dishwasher rack in place. They are 100% plastic.

I did find a few rust spots after a month or so. I think I had just undercoated those areas, so applied a bit more coating. Now 6 months later, there's another spot or 2, need to touch up those.

@@martik778 Yes, so true. I guess when I buy a new dishwasher, I'll look for stainless steel racks.
