To the haters: I used the reRack and it works great. Neither I nor the creator was trying to extend the dishwasher for another 10 years, just limp it along a few extra years, and get some extra life out of it. That's what the reRack is good for. Sure you "should" sand it down to bare metal, but that's not the point. It's just to slow down the process. Both he and I know it didn't "eliminate" the rust, just gave a few years of extra usage out of an appliance that was on its way out anyway. The reRack works great for that, just temper your expectations. Or buy a new rack altogether.

Why would a dishwasher be on its way out just because the rack is rusty? Mines perfectly fine after 6 years except for the rack rust. I'd like to fix the rack and get another 10 years out of it without paying the scam 10000% markup of a replacement

I just cleaned my dishwasher filters and thought I would just order both rack replacement. Until I saw the $366 price tag to replace them. At the price I might as well purchase a new dishwasher. My dishwasher runs fine. However, heading into the holidays I just can't afford a new appliance at this time. Thank you so much for the information I will be using this method to push me through the next several months. Great Information!!!!

If you do it right (sanding down to bare metal to remove as much rust as possible) it might last even longer.

To have lasting results #1 where you see the rust (rack degrading) the existing coating will have to be removed until you reach bright metal, the rust on the existing metal (wire) must be removed completely, this will require sandpaper, good wire brush and depending on one's ability a power drill for wire brush will do the best job as to returning metal to bright state.
#2 After all rust is removed one may desire to give a cleaning with (take precautions) muriatic acid and examine metal carefully especially if pitted that all rust has been removed. #3 Final item is to clean thoroughly to remove (baking soda rinse) all traces of acid. Now you can apply coat and be reasonably sure your work (yes hard work) reaps rewards.
I am sure there are several other fine methods for achieving desired results, but rest assured all will require maximum effort
for long lasting repair and few dollars well spent.

To anyone who thinks they can use the spray paint- to make it easier - Please do not use the plastic dip spray paint to repair the dishwasher or any areas that come in contact with food. This product is specifically designed to be used on areas that come in contact with food. The company made it clear that the spray paint versions are harmful if ingested- as they were not designed to be used where food can be in contact. Only use products that are specifically noted they are designed for areas that will come in contact with food

I remember a discussion about this on a forum. Premature rack rust can be an indication of people pre-rinsing... what happens is the dishwasher detergent enzymes need food particles to work on. If those aren't present...it starts attacking the racks and etching dishes even...When I say don't pre-rinse. I'm not talking about dumping half a bowl of soup or oatmeal in the dishwasher. I'm saying if you finish the bowl, don't rinse it, put it in..same with dinner plates or pots/pans... the one exception for me is EGG residue or raw meat juices.....that I will rinse off... I run a load about every 4 days. I wait until it's packed full...so there's dried food on the dishes while they wait to be washed... everything comes out spotless with the occasional peanut butter on a knife that might not come completely off.

In essence, you are painting over rust. If the rust isn't removed it will continue to degrade the metal underneath! You should be sanding off, or using a dremel to remove all surface rust prior to painting!

Much of the rust is not due to wear or damage from items in the dishwasher, they originate at the places where the steel pieces are welded together. If those places are not prepped correctly when made and before the vinyl coating is applied, the corrosion will gradually start and spread, causing the coating to bubble and break apart. You can spend a lot of time doing this kind of repair, only to have more areas show soon after. I just threw out a six year old LG due to rusted racks, when LG refused to stand behind the product and they had the audacity to charge over $600 for replacement racks. I replaced it with a Bosch, who at least warrants their racks for five years and sell replacements for a third of what LG charges.

Replacement racks are ridiculously expensive/overpriced. This stuff is likely best used if you catch a break in the coating early. But that entails monitoring them regularly & nobody does that. I'll just use them till I cant stand it anymore & replace the dishwasher which otherwise works like it did when new. I really thought when I bought this unit the racks were made of some kind of new corrosion proof material. Silly me for kidding myself. Planned obsolescence.

You cannot. It states on the container as well as the company bc I called thinking I could do that. And they made it very clear that it was not made to be used on products that come in contact with food surfaces. The heat from the dishwasher would continue to release chemicals onto the food contact surface areas creating chemical layered surfaces that could be harmful or fatal when food makes contact and then ingested.
