the quality of your tutorials is honestly almost unbelievably good. I don't know how you manage to produce so much detail in your work but man, it's soooo nice to watch. when you did the animation where the fill light got dialed down is a great example of this! keep it up man. I've been around for a good while now but it's been a while since I've watched a video. will be checking back much more often with these lighting tutorials to use a refresher :)
+DailyDaves Thank you! It takes a lot of work putting all of this together, especially since I am doing it all by myself. It can get frustrating at times, considering I had to re-do the animated part twice since After Effects crashed on me without saving anything the first time. But honestly, all of it is worth it once I see all the feedback the video receives and seeing people pleased with the learning experience. Thank you for watching, I'm happy to you'll be coming back for more :)
when Tungsten light detailed, there was a Chinese Mandarin word meanning"Your mum's (female anatomy)" that sounds nothing do with this very helpful episode. Just remind you : ) no offence.
KriscoartProductions thank u for replying and I love ur work. I can't believe he has been snubbed for oscars so many times. I think with the new blade runner he'll finally get it. Weird that Jeff cronenweth is not working on it though. He's a great dp and his dad was the dp for the original blade runner.
+Susan Bennet Thanks! 2 more videos on this set up are coming in the next two weeks: Moving the lights with story in mind Creating separation with color Gels Then we are going to move on to some even more advanced stuff. Can't wait to share :)
Very interesting and useful, thank you very much! The only thing that was missing is lack of comparison the shot with back light and without. But even without this tiny thing this lesson was great. Waiting for further tutorials ;)
+Teens McLagen You're right I should have done some quick cuts near the end comparing the different looks. As a way around this you can click on the following time marks of the video to see that comparison. 1:30 Key only - 2:14 Key+ Fill - 3:58 Key + Fill + Back Light
Hi, I have looked through comments, but have not seen one important question. What lights do you use? I like the tone you are getting. Thanks and keep up the good work.
You're the man. You cut out all the BS when you present this. You should call this channel "Nutshelling Filmmaking." You're the John Holmes of video production how-tos. A cut the BS specialist. Not real sure about that shirt, (kinda looks like a beer belly grandfather's after a wet tee shirt contest, but dang it who cares, you're a genius.) Thank you! You're the Primitive Technology guy of video, except with the previously mentioned shirt.
This is such an amazing tutorial! Today's kids are really blessed to have lots of opportunities to educate them. Thank u so much for such great content. Love the tungsten lighting.
What other lighting equipment that allows handling color of light like this using color filters? What other equipment exists with that characteristic? Thanks, I follow many of your videos, they are really great.
so the back light is visible in footage??how to place it to not visible and still give proper backlight?and also should lights always stands higher than the actor's face?(i mean for natural lighting)
Hey dude! Found out about you recently and subscribed! I really dig your style! Especially your animations! Do you make them yourself? If so how! I can see a lot of drawing inspired animation, kind of like the kind you see in Atlantis the lost empire sometimes which I absolutely love. I think it's a style we should preserve! As an aside I'm really looking for sound effects like the ones used when Kida becomes one with the crystal which resemble the animation you use, mostly in your shortcuts video. Any idea what I'm talking about it where I could find some? I'm also a filmmaker and I'm always thinking of new ideas for stories! Hope you're well and keep creating! Love from London!
So helpful, thank you for sharing great information! I’m beginning to create how to videos here on YT (Thai fruit & vegetable carving) and having a really hard time lighting my work. My camera is above my hands, and my hands are creating a shadow grrrr....any tips would be enormously appreciated:)
hi kriscoart.please give some idea about how to buy light setups..iam a beginner..i wanna make short film.so i need to know the name of lightings and what are the setups to buy.
Really cool video. The ratio between the key and fill (well, lighting in general) definetly is the one thing that helps set the tone of the scene. Oh and btw, what are the requirements to use youtube space? I'm curious :P
+algute100 Very true. That is one of the first things you can do to establish the mood of your shot. As far as the UA-cam spaces, there are different tiers based on how many subscribers you have. I think that any UA-camr can have access to the space as far as some social events but you can start using the space for production purposes from 10K subscribers and up but only once per month. You can use the space for 3 production days after 100K subs but I believe you get unlimited time for post. Not entirely sure on the rest of the perks but I think you can find a chart that explains it a lot better than I can. Pretty amazing that UA-cam does that for content creators.
KriscoartProductions Wow, that is pretty amazing indeed! Again, thanks for the information, both in the video and your comment. Definetly going to pay more atention to lighting from now on. May I suggest a video on composition? Thanks and take care :D
Awesome thank you.. That's an expensive kit, do you have a recommendation for just a small production like vlogging? I totally get you what you pay for but I'd use the 1600 for a lens

So, to get this straight... Back light usually "hides" behind the subject's head creating a halo sort of look? And if it's not placed directly behind the subject's head, it is renamed as "hair light?"
I am 100% sure that this style of t-shirt will never go out of style or look ridiculous in the future... I can bet on it!
dude, the way you teach is very comprehensive. I'm a new film maker aspiring to be great at this and your expectations are great. thank you!
the quality of your tutorials is honestly almost unbelievably good. I don't know how you manage to produce so much detail in your work but man, it's soooo nice to watch. when you did the animation where the fill light got dialed down is a great example of this!

What are those round lights called? Brand etc
I need one of those if not expensive 😁
How do you get reverse key lighting?
