  • My review on the Sony BVM D24E1WU...
    This is a thousand line monitor that I have had for a few months and just got around to reviewing it. I hope you guys forgive me if there is anything I say thats wrong. All my research was done online and there are a lot of different opinions and theories about TVlines. I try my best to break it down into simplistic form if it can. I also talk about the following...
    1. Having a 1000 line Rgb monitor
    2. Are there benefits with widescreen displays
    3. Discussing TVlines ( Analog Resolution VS Digital)
    4. NEC XM29 Plus VS the Sony BVM A24E1WU
    5. PS2 Component vs RGB on PS2
    6. PS1 vs Ps2 for Ps1 Games
    7. Comparing Tim Worthington's RGB chip on a Jungle Green N64
    VS a normal black N64 with original Rgb mod and clean sync
    8. IS this the sharpest RGB monitor out there?
    I would also like to say Happy Birthday to my son Seth!! I love you and cannot wait to see!!!!!

      Is there a significant difference between the A and the D? I'm looking to pick up one of the two.

    • @emubastard0
      @emubastard0 7 років тому

      Assuming same hours on the tube and calibrated, there is no difference that I am aware of for 240p gaming, and anything else up to 1080i. The tubes are identical. Electronics are different.
      The A series is the newest, and if you could find one would give you a a better chance of getting a newer tube. It also supports 1080p and more PC refresh rates. It has the one nice feature of being "rape your grandmother" expensive. That's not saying much as one of my D32's went for $2500.
      If you can find a good D series, I would pass on an A series unless you have actually need of 1080p.
      It's also almost impossible to get an A series RGB decoder board

    Man, this is a wealth of information. Have you ever considered doing a video comparing a lower spec RGB monitor to a higher end CRT TV? It would be interesting to see just how much better a lower end monitor is than even a really CRT TV. Anyways great video.

    A magnum opus television for a magnum opus of a video. Well done. Your editing and information are both top notch and interesting! I own a Sony BVM20F1U and I completely agree - playing a PS1 game over 240P RGB is a beauty to behold.

    • @phonedork
      @phonedork  9 років тому +1

      Digital Elixir The Sony BVM20F1U is a fantastic monitor!!!!! I have its little brother the 14F5U! Sharp as hell too! I was originally looking for a 20F1U and was going to review it instead of the 24 Inch BVM. But they were so damn expensive on Ebay. I ended up going with this one since I got a decent price for it and I never heard too much about them. I see there high as hell on Ebay now :-(
      Price flipping is the one thing I hate seeing after I review something! Not sure if my videos help contribute to this behavior. But I am sure they don't help...

    I just ordered my first BVM. It's a little 1311 but considering I did a bunch of retro gaming on a 14 inch LCD I think I'll be satisfied for now. I've got back and leg issues and am an ex surgery patient so lifting and moving CRTs could be a potential problem for me.

    That was one hell of a great presentation and overview.
    It's crazy for me watching this when you brought up the sharpness and clarity segment. Years back when I used to do a ton of mame on my pc, I made it a habit of having each game profile at exactly x2 it's original resolution so I could fit the scanlines in and keep the accuracy as close as possible. Now I'm looking at your BVM and it's deja vu because I'm looking at exactly the same unfiltered details I used to have on my crt all those years ago. If there's any multi-sync monitors that go low as 240p, I'd like to pick one up for testing at some point.

    • @phonedork
      @phonedork  9 років тому +1

      ***** You should look for a 14 inch BVM or PVM! The 14 inchers are pretty great! Not as pricey and sharp as freaking hell! I love my Sony BVM14F5U! I actually traded my NEC for it lol! I would have not did that if I dod not have the 24 incher though. But they can be found for a decent price sometimes. Since most seem dissuaded by small monitors. I actually love the 14 inchers!

    I find myself rewatching these videos a lot lately. I think a lot of it is your unrivalled ability to photograph CRTs, but also your humor is rather entertaining. I'd love to come across one of these holy grail monitors, but until then like you say I'm playing on what makes me happy. I have a pvm14n6u but it doesn't look as good as the one you've shown in your videos, mine needs a re-cap or something. I mostly game on a 32" jvc d-series with a scart to component adapter. One day though....an nec xm29plus will be mine!

    Just wanted to say thanks for making this video. I'm the guy who will not rest until he finds the sharpest fucking display ever, and thanks to this video I found it. I may have over payed for mine, and it does have 12k hours on it, but it's still in great shape and the image is amazing.
    Just wanted to say that I had no problems getting my Dreamcast and scan line generator to work with this display. I use the Hanzo VGA adapter, feed that into the Kenzai, then feed that to the monitor via SCART.
    Just make sure that you have the Hanzo set to VGA mode and the scan line generator off Also, you'll need to use a power adapter for the Kenzai, because my image doesn't sync when i don't use one (which may be your problem).
    Anyways, just wanted to thank you again as I learned a lot from your video and can finally put an end to my search for the greatest retro monitor out there.

    I just want to add that this monitor will take 480P RGB Sync On Green through scart! No need for component at all nor a VGA conversion with this monitor. To do this just start a game in RGB and then activate 480P. It will then come out of sync because its trying to sync on green. Just turn the external sync off and there you have it! 480P with RGB colors! Way better then component 480P! Only for PS2 since it syncs on green! I did have issues with it when I had two of my "BandBridge" scart splitters daisy chained. It would not successfully sync with green. After bypassing the scart switchers, I was able to. Pretty neat!!!!

      phonedork I got a Wii for $10 on craigslist and got an inexpensive component cable, works well for GameCube, no $300 cable.
      I would also love to see some 480p xbox and GC content on your different displays. I'm trying now to find best picture quality possible for my original xbox. 480p looks only decent on my xbr960, though 720p looks great. I believe my pvm 1954q can accept component as well as rgb, so maybe I'll try running xbox component to the pvm1954q to see if I get better results than xbr960.

    Great video as usual. loved the last part. Last time i opened my eyes so wide was when i first bought my BVM-20F1U. How did you capture the footage? (Lens/aperture/ect...). Also can you send me the scanline filter you used in the previous video?

    • @phonedork
      @phonedork  9 років тому +4

      Bader Al-Qordi Its very tricky to capture footage on a CRT because of Moire caused by the scanlines and the aligning of the phosphors. There is no exact correct method because you have to meter each game differently! I use a caprock aliasing / moire filter on my Nikon 85mm 1.8. This helps some, but only if I off focus just a hair to not get moire. Shutter speed needs to always be 1/60th of a second regardless or you will get flickering black bars. I shoot with soft lenses. My Sigma 50-500mm and 85mm 1.8 which is sharp, but at 1.8 its a little softer. Make sure there are no lights on in the room. You can shoot at a angle to also get less moire but at the cost of not seeing the full screen correctly. But if you are just shooting one character in the game, its fine this way. Some systems are brighter then others so that is why we need to meter them individually. Record footage bring to computer and view if its fine. Don't correct it with programs. Get it right on camera! The closer the zoom, also the less moire. Hope that helps!

    you seem very well versed in the nature of display technology's relation to gaming sweet spots for viewing experiences! with that in mind, I feel you are the best person to propose this question to: which display in your opinion of the Nintendo DS family (DS, DSlite, DSi, DSLL) has the ideal pixel density on display as well as pleasing color gamut? would love to hear your input on this topic as I've found it to be a rather glossed over comparison online.

    Just scored a BVM-14F5E :) Going to mostly replace my 14M4DE - why? Because 2 9" monitors will fit perfectly on it.
    Just "mostly" tho because I occasionally need S-Video for my C64 (there's an extra module for the 14F5E, but that's supposedly hard to get/"rare"/expensive).
    D24E1WU is a fucking beast tho - flat tube, highest possible resolution, big enough for a living room setting (aka sitting a few meters away from it). How long did you have to search for it? Those never seem to pop up here.

    hey phonedork, do you know the JVC DT-V1900CG ? I've come across that monitor and it's capable of doing almost any resolution there is while having over 900tvl according to its manual. I thought that this one might be as good or almost as good as the D24E1WU, can you confirm that?

    I’ve done alittle of everything. Crt component, svideo, Scart converters to crt, even ossc to flat panels... and I’ve finally rested at an old Sony 24inch Trinition with everything hooked up via a s-video switcher. It’s the sweet spot between size, color, sharpness and convenience.

    What's the best to connect PS4 to BVM D24E1WU? Mine is not european version, only has HD-SDI + Digital Analog module. I can get HDMI to SDI converter but I am not sure if it produces the best results. Please advice. Thanks

    Do you know what the difference might be between the BVM-D24E1WU and the BVM-A24E1WU besides the one letter being different in the model number?

    my PS1 is plugged into an led tv :( the tv does have a component input, and i've seen an s-video-to-component adapter on ebay. if i send an s-video cable from the ps1 into the adapter, then into the component input of the tv, do you know if that'd give me a bit better picture quality?

    Once again, excellent video. You do a great job explaining the benefits of these CRTs without getting needlessly technical. What did you do with your other TV?

      Ben A I actually traded it for a BVM 14F5U. Its a very sharp little 14 incher! I only did that because I have the 24 incher though. I traded it to Skips who does all my mods. He then sold it to a guy here named Paul.

    How can I change color and sharpness settings on RGB input? I had 2 TVs that could do it but now my Sony Trinitron can't do it. :(

    Hey phonedork, in the video you mentioned that the BVM D24E1WU does not like sync strippers. If I'm using an Extron CrossPoint Ultra switcher to connect all of my consoles, the switcher only accepts csync/clean sync, so for example, a PS1 with a sync on luma SCART cable needs a SCART to BNC w/ built in sync stripper cable. I really want to get the monitor, but does that mean I won't be able to use an Extron CrossPoint Ultra switcher anymore?

    • @phonedork
      @phonedork  7 років тому +1

      li2rg It is fine with a sync stripper in line with a extron cross point

    14:00 is your NES Composite original or RGB modded? Would be interesting to know what's the most accurate color Palette. Well, I guess the BVM accepts Composite...

    Hey man, I just got one of these bad boys and everything works great except when I switch my gamecube to progressive scan the screen gets all jumbled. I have it connected with the component cables. Is there a setting I have to change. Did you experience any issues like that?

    • @phonedork
      @phonedork  6 років тому

      Nutz4Gunz45 I never had problem with progressive 480p or 720p with it. As a matter of fact somebody mentioned on Twitter how awesome 480p GameCube is with this monitor using the official cables. You do however need to put 75 ohm terminals loads on the output of your component ports on the bvm. Or else it will be too bright. But that does not explain your sync issues. Do those component cables work with any other tv?

    • @nutz4gunz457
      @nutz4gunz457 6 років тому

      Yea, the cables work fine with my LCD tv. Its really weird because the on screen menu is jumbled and stays that way until I turn the monitor off. Even if I turn off the gamecube first.
