Hey guys great build. As a Malibu/ Indmar tech since 2006. I worked for one of the largest Malibu dealerships in the nation. You are right to say they have truck cams in them. That’s normal. The actual problem is those fat sacks that you guys removed at the beginning of the video. Aftermarket ballast has been added. Which is very common for a bigger wake. The problem is that many under experienced boat drivers chop the throttle too fast when a rider falls. And in some cases actually put the boat into reverse. While the exhaust does have flaps on the back to hold out water in this event the boat is sitting too deep in the water for them to be 100% efficient. Hence the motor takes on water into the cylinders and hydro locks. I have replaced many of those engines. And no they are not warranty at that point. Glad to see the video. Glad to see someone else complaining about getting that interior out. Keep up the good work
When I watch your videos it reminds me why I retired after 50+ years in the trade. I still enjoy watching others who are real professionals. Today, I can barely hold a wrench let alone use one. Arthritis in my hands has caught up to me.
Hi Dave, Indmar tech here, factory certified since 2004. If you get more of these in or run into any issues with your rebuild, Diacom from Rinda Technologies is the official scan software for Indmar as well as a couple of other engine manufacturers. It runs on just about any laptop. All you need is the software, the USB cable and CAN bus adapter for the OBD-M plug. Fun fact, Rinda was actually part of the group who came up with the OBD-M standard. With Diacom, you will be able to see all the live data and perform all the tests that dealers can. The only thing that will be locked is the ability to flash calibration files to the ECM, which will be a dealer-only function. Your team did a great job! P.S. Don't be surprised by the oil consumption rate in this engine even after break-in. There's a reason checking your oil level is a required pre-trip step on a boat. You should've seen it when Indmar used the ZZ383 long block for Malibu's Hammerhead 383 package. 2 service bulletins to add oil coolers and change oil viscosity later, and they finally just sent everyone a shorter dipstick😅 and then dropped the model not long after. The 8.1L was the same way. Over a quart per hour was NORMAL per manufacturer.
@peaj4812 They had their issues, but not enough of them to make me tell people to stay away from them. However, I would advise to have it checked out by an Indmar dealer who will have the ability to see the warranty history, and will also be able to do a scan of the ECM and look for potential issues. You will also be able to verify if the hours on the tach match the hours on the ECM. If either one is changed, they do NOT update each other in those years. Something else to watch out for too, is the sound coming from the bell housing at idle in neutral. If you hear metallic squeaking or something that sounds like pocket change bouncing, then the dampener plate between the engine and transmission is worn. There was an update on those. I've seen the original plates grenade hard enough to go through the bell housing and sever the steering cable. Scary stuff. So scary there's a very good chance it's already been replaced. But you never know. Just something to watch out for. They also went through several calibration updates on 2004 and earlier models trying to smooth out the idle. They would lope like crazy and not because of any kind of wild profile to the cam. It just took a few tries for the engineers to get the air bleed right at idle without sacrificing tip-in. If the one you're looking at is 2005 or later (last year was 2007 if my memory serves me) then it will have electronic throttle and you won't run into that issue. The later the model you can get on the 8.1, the better, preferably 2006 or 2007. Electronic throttle is actually a benefit on these and if anything ever happens to the ECM, you'll have much better luck finding the MEFI-5 or Indmar E-Controls ECM instead of the getting more rare by the day CEFI-3, MEFI-4A, or MEFI-4B. Happy hunting!
@peaj4812 I should clarify that the damper (previous post incorrectly said "dampener" because I forgot to referee my inaccurate autocorrect) plate issue is not exclusive to the 8.1L. I've seen hundreds of them fail, even on even base model small blocks. The one we saw grenade was on a Mastercraft with an MCX, which is a 5.7L. Damper plates see a hard life, especially if the owner likes jumping the wakes of other boats. The damper that you saw bolted to the flywheel of the engine Dave's crew rebuilt in this video is one of the updated designs for V-Drive applications that have encapsulated springs. They are much tougher than the original.
I have the 383 hammerhead in my 2008 and absolutely love it. It definitely likes to sip the oil though. Which viscosity is recommended for it now? I just did an oil change today.
@martech360 I have no doubt you love it, the engine itself is a definite performer! Just every engine has its quirks as you experience, the constant load and high RPM of a marine application makes it addicted to its own oil. The last bulletin raised the viscosity to a monograde oil, SAE 40, unless you're consistently seeing over 90*F ambient temperature, then use SAE 50. A longer-term solution is to install another oil cooler, if it hasn't been installed already. If not, you should already see two coolers on that particular engine. One will be inline on the water inlet hose, which runs down the side of the engine next to the oil pan leading up to the raw water pump. This cooler is to cool the engine oil. The other cooler is bolted to the front of the engine and cooled by the water exiting the raw water pump. This cooler is for the transmission. So, to add one for your engine oil, you just need another marine oil/transmission cooler meant for 1.25" ID water hose, and install it in series with your other engine oil cooler. Indmar used to have a kit for it, but I think it's been so long they've discontinued it. Doesn't take much to build your own kit though.
Dave can we get a tool box tour of your main tool box and your roll cart? How do you like to organize your drawers and keep things layed out? How do you like to organize your workspace for efficiency? I would love to see some tool box tours on the channel!

@@DavesAutoCenterCenterville Dave I just read that there’s a Class Action lawsuit against GM on the C4 6.4 Diesel engine it states that the injection pump is faulty. Have you heard anything about this yet?
Hey dave and family, I would just like to put my two cents in. Can we do an outro where someone recaps what was done and actually says "see ya next time" or "until next time" or something. From experience, most V-drive boat engines will come out between the frame and towing pole just fine if you remove the monstrous exhaust manifolds first.

One time a long time ago, I stripped a a hole and it was just a pain in the butt. Just wanted to give you my experience so you guys don’t have the same problem. Thanks again for your great UA-cam videos.
Dave I know you don’t like gel-pro but a sever Marine head gaskets have been the best one I’ve ever used and if it has raw water cooling that’s what you need if it’s a closed cooling with antifreeze you can use what you want .
I know, right? Full service garage. Also I heard a saying. "The best days in a boat owners lives are the day they bought and the day they sold the boat." But it's love to own one just the same.
Several different things on a boat engine vs a car/truck engine, biggest is camshaft, next is the Freeze/casting plugs, must be brass or stainless, as the cooling is most likely raw water (lake or ocean water) cooled, and a regular steel plug will rust away in no time
Just think there isn't any transmission, so the rpms don't drop during shifts. It's direct drive so you have to build an engine that holds wide open for long periods of time without having oil or cooling issues.
I’ve seen more than a few boat engines with automotive cams do this. Lobe separation is part of it but also duration needs to be taken into account. 110 degrees on less than 224 duration will work anything above and 112 degrees and up. The design of the wet exhaust system your running will also have some bearing on it as well.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is looking like a variable displacement hydraulic pump mounted to the engine, so I'm presuming that this boat has a hydraulic drive. Cam profile for low end torque shoudn't matter too much then ? As you can rev the engine up to the most efficient speed and then apply the load gradually ?
Dave this engine looks like and old Chevrolet Monte small block V-8 engines they installed in there later front wheel drive models? Ray of Raymond’s Automotive repair rebuilt one.
70s and 80s had a lot of boats built with 454. I worked on 2 one was and 18ft and the other was probably 22ft. Fiberglass hull the only metal outside of the engine, fuel tanks and jet drive was screws. The 18ft had water jacked exhaust manifold to allow what little space was left around the motor to be used for storage. The 18ft with nothing but a half tank of gas and me driving was crazy fast.
Good stuff gentleman. I do boats for a living and see that model a lot around here. Gotta give em that little extra with the bilge cleaning. Anyway to make the removal easier when you only have to do the engine, leave the bellhousing on the engine and loosen the vdrive from the bellhousing. Then pull the engine. With this you can leave the frame and floor section in place. Best of luck.
Unfortunately so many production boatbuilders instal systems before the upper mouldings (deck, cabin, etc.) are fitted, actually this one was not too bad and you did not have to cut anything out.
Cats need high temp for them to function at all. If you cool them they're useless and you might as well remove them altogether. Proper shielding / insulation is important and helps them function at peak performance.
@@M6Cabriolet I can tell you as a wake surfer, I love catalytic converters. Makes it a way better experience behind the boat because it knocks the exhaust smell a TON.
like you Dave, I learned mechanics in florida. if I had to pull an engine to correct the problems in a boat. all the wiring and rigging gets pulled and replaced or I could not stand behind it. my engines routinely lasted 2x what a new factory engine out of the box would last. but your now in Utah. how many miles away from the corrosive salt water environment. so you probably dont have to invest in helicoils and nuts to weld to broken bolts by the case full. I only used wiseco pistons and would bore and hone to the closest tolerances possible. do the job completely and once and break engine in myself and in all my career only had 1 problem engine to come back. my engine building life destroyed in hurricane, guess I stayed in florida too long. your shop and employees are awesome. keep up all the great work
Great insight into a ski, surf, wakeboard vessel. Noticed to music comments. Personally the music was enjoyable. However it's understood that not everyone has a similar opinion. Many channels are completely void of music. In many cases there is voice over narration. A huge time consumer.
I thought the same think in the last video, when poor Cayden was battling away, I was worried he was going to hurt himself. Especially when he nearly dropped th transfer case.
1st up is black oil that tells of no Maintenance Then .015" Frt 2 Back block deck ht variation tells obvious story that incompetence after GM built it is involved. A GM factory new LS3 with marine tune least costly reliable solution.
Water reversion is a major issue. It’s best to do a lock out on the VVT. I have twins on my 1980 Biesemeyer 27 ft Daycruiser and it’s recommended to install a high quality temp and oil pressure and none of this electric gages, strictly mechanical!
I need to rebuild my outbound boat motor this winter. I wonder if you guys would be interested in that to see the other side of marine industry. It's a 2 stroke 90 hp 3 cylinder. Incredibly simple motor. I think it would make a great video.

The 18ft had water jacked exhaust manifold to allow what little space was left around the motor to be used for storage. The 18ft with nothing but a half tank of gas and me driving was crazy fast.
You and Tyson got the A game going on
This awesome to watch thank you
Hi from Quebec ! One of the best Chanel out there !thank for the wise advise and content
Hey, thanks!
Great video!
Thankyou for showing it running out on the water!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome , yaw work on inboard boat motors . Good afternoon from East Texas .
Dave this engine looks like and old Chevrolet Monte small block V-8 engines they installed in there later front wheel drive models?
Fantastically cool episode
Good stuff gentleman. I do boats for a living and see that model a lot around here. Gotta give em that little extra with the bilge cleaning. Anyway to make the removal easier when you only have to do the engine, leave the bellhousing on the engine and loosen the vdrive from the bellhousing. Then pull the engine. With this you can leave the frame and floor section in place. Best of luck.
Unfortunately so many production boatbuilders instal systems before the upper mouldings (deck, cabin, etc.) are fitted, actually this one was not too bad and you did not have to cut anything out.
Well done, Dave
Dave off topic Question here? Do you guys see a lot of KIA V6 engines in your shop?
Happy Friday, Dave and team!🍻
Catalytic converters on a boat i’m not an engineer, those things get hot. I hope their watercooled.
They need to remove them completely
Cats need high temp for them to function at all. If you cool them they're useless and you might as well remove them altogether. Proper shielding / insulation is important and helps them function at peak performance.
They are not water cooled, the water is actually pumped in the exhaust after the catalyst system down stream of it
@@M6Cabrioletgo away.
I only used wiseco pistons and would bore and hone to the closest tolerances possible. do the job completely and once and break engine in myself and in all my career only had 1 problem engine to come back. my engine building life destroyed in hurricane, guess I stayed in florida too long. your shop and employees are awesome. keep up all the great work
Dave: Today we have a helicopter engine that has a blown head.
Those are turbine engines. I don't think Dave does those.
@@BenKlassen1yea that was the joke lol
Robinson helos use gas engines…
@@BenKlassen1 not all, Robinson uses piston pounders
@@ghostrider-be9ek Good to know that there are exceptions that are of lower quality.
Couldnt help but smile when i heard it throttle up at end
Nice work...
Thank you! Cheers!
Great insight into a ski, surf, wakeboard vessel.
Noticed to music comments. Personally the music was enjoyable. However it's understood that not everyone has a similar opinion. Many channels are completely void of music. In many cases there is voice over narration. A huge time consumer.
I want you guys to but a motor in my rig so bad!!!!
Got it running good!
Nice to see the finish at speed 🚤 🌊!
Another job well done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice job Tyson! Too pretty to run, just display it on a stand!
here to type out that i support the BetterHelp ad. good on u Dave
😁Dave's Auto Center & Marine.
A boat?!?!?! You guys are awesome!
That build looks 💵 💵 💵 💲 🤑
Should build an adjustable height stand for when you want to work on the engine hanging from the post lift stop it from swinging around?
I thought the same think in the last video, when poor Cayden was battling away, I was worried he was going to hurt himself. Especially when he nearly dropped th transfer case.
Editor had way too much fun with the music-timed transitions on 2:25! Nice.
The media team has to enjoy their jobs too 🙌🙌😂
@arnout Right? Wasn't that a fantastic job once you noticed it??? Great work!!!
Great video
Did that fishing rod get any use?🤣👍
I saw the fishing poles! 🎣
I see a jasper sticker this is not the first motor.
Dave what's your opinion on "breaking in" these engines?
Trick way of getting it out is to cut the hull. No joke that's how I do cummins boats
1st up is black oil that tells of no Maintenance Then .015" Frt 2 Back block deck ht variation tells obvious story that incompetence after GM built it is involved. A GM factory new LS3 with marine tune least costly reliable solution.
Awesome job 👏
BOAT stands for Break out another Ten Thousand!
In Cali 1970s-80 bust out another thou
Prolly 25K for this one.
@@Z-Bart That doesn't fit the acronym
@@shckltnebay Neither does BOATT Bro.
@@Z-Bart Oy vey, 10000 does that help you?
There's a lot of crap on that motor 😅. Good job as usual 👏 👍 👌
Don’t forget to the put the plug in!
Water reversion is a major issue. It’s best to do a lock out on the VVT. I have twins on my 1980 Biesemeyer 27 ft Daycruiser and it’s recommended to install a high quality temp and oil pressure and none of this electric gages, strictly mechanical!
That is a great benefit. 👍
I have no useful information. I sailed boats growing up. Yes. Masts and sails, and a 5 hp motor (if needed, which was rare).
I have a 2005 wakesetter lsv. There is no easy way on a boat. Lol.
I need to rebuild my outbound boat motor this winter. I wonder if you guys would be interested in that to see the other side of marine industry. It's a 2 stroke 90 hp 3 cylinder. Incredibly simple motor. I think it would make a great video.
The owner must really trust you. Marine engine setups are a whole nother world of complexity.
cats were steam cleaned by all the water going through the engine. 😆
Land, sea, what’s next air?😉👍😂🤣
I'm game for that. 😂👍
Whenever I see someone tearing an engine down I just keep thinking about the fact they have to put it all back together afterwards.
I’d be so confused 😂
