      Im in zone 8b in Spain. I know you are in a colder zone but the owari Satsuma is supposed to be able to take 12-15°F with no protectio and mine has been down to 19°F in a unheated pollytunne.@RossRaddi

    I have a yuzu and red Australian finger lime in a sunny window. Both patiently waiting to return to the outdoors…

      I just learned about/saw the red finger lime tree for the first time today. The fruit looks so cool!

    I might be a newbie fig grower but Citrus is my jam! Growing 13 varieties in ground and 6 in large containers. Even in zone 9 Louisiana some just have to be relegated to container culture. I even gifted Brian R a couple newly grafted varieties he didn’t have ( Okitsu wase & minneola tangelo) on one of my recent trips to Chackbay. Nothing like home grown citrus and figs.

      That's great. I hope Brian is doing well.

    Ahhh i see you use fabric pots for your citrus Ross, i was thinking they'd be really messy to have indoors so I use plastic, i might need to rethink my system as i don't think the roots on mine are thriving in the plastic 🤔

    we've had calamondin in a 10gal pot here in central NJ for 3 years! tons of fruit 2-3times per year. what is considered "a lot of fertilizer"? we also got a navel orange last year, also in a 10gal pot - not sure if we can get full fruit, but the flowers are really fragrant indoors! the plants love going outside in the spring, but do pretty well in our NW facing "sun" room.

    Whoa, 10 gallons? I was hoping to get away with 3-5 gallons. Guess I need to rethink that!

      I've got the young ones in 3-5s. Can't say they'll perform well long term in that though.

      @@RossRaddi Ok. I'll start with what I have with a plan to repot as soon as necessary. Thanks so much for sharing your insight and experiences! I've been faithfully following your cold weather fig tree care tips as well. Hopefully, my 4 baby trees will survive/do well and fruit this year!

    Don't overlook less common cold hardy oranges and mandarins.

      I'll be planting my Yuzu tree in the spring. We'll see what happens. I've had a seedling of flying dragon in the ground for years. it still hasn't produced any fruit, but it does survive. I hear ya, but I don't see the point if I don't enjoy the fruit quality. There is plenty of poor-tasting citrus that is cold hardy.

      @@RossRaddiOnes to try are Thomasville citrangequats (great lemon/lime substitute), US119 orange hybrid, Owari satsuma, swingle citrumelo, and the Prague Chimera. Covering a citrus bush with one or two frost jackets and using a water barrel would be sufficient, certainly for the hardier varieties. Much easier than lugging pots and no worry of over/under watering. Plant near a home wall for extra frost protection. Our community needs zone 7 volunteers, it’s proven effective in zone 8.

    Not being rude but what was the tip for growing citrus? Pots, and bring inside??? Enjoy watching your channel, but you could do better from the looks of your citrus..

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  7 місяців тому +2

      Interesting, I thought I gave quite a few tips on growing them, variety selection, and inspiration to growers thinking about growing a citrus tree in cold locations. My citrus trees are very productive. Even most of the young trees produced. I think you are confusing "their looks" with the fig trees in front of them. In November, my fig trees were going dormant and losing their leaves.

      Wow @petarbubalo231; unkind words....
      Thanks Ross; love your videos. I had not known about finger limes; they look interesting, I will look for some at my garden center. 😊

      @delmadehoyos1946 Unkind? maybe in your eyes, but I was being truthful. What have you really learned from this clip? Pot size, and you really didn't know to bring inside before first frost? Variety ? I can tell you what he left out but that would be too much for you. His fig videos are very good and detailed that's what I was comparing them to.
