When Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band were playing in the Sixties. We danced any way we wanted to, no set format just go for it. 70s arrived and NS was given it's name as it was popular in clubs in the north of England. Up beat fast music that had it's grounding in Motown of the mid sixties. People danced to it putting their own moves to the sounds that were played. Times move on and it's great to see a new generation taking up the banner that is Northern Soul - Keep the Faith

I was wearing those wide trousers, we called them gaberdines, in the USA in 1965. We were not Beatle fan's. We were soul music lovers, RnB, Motown. We were called greasers. Wore black top Chuck Taylors, with 3/4 lenght leather jackets. I was15 years old at the time. I still only listen to soul music at age 65, makes me feel like I'm 16 years old again !!

exactly how I feel now! Only 44 years old, but true Soul and Ska lover since a loooong time. Didn't realise how strong was Northern Soul, totally not in the french musical mood, shame!! that's crazy!! I feel like a little boy, fresh minded am I!!

I've always loved that soul fans in the US were called Greasers, whereas in the UK it was exact opposite, Greasers were the rockers. But absolute respect to you sir, keep the faith!

Interesting cross culture. In the UK greasers were bikers, into heavy metal, leather bike jackets and the long hair.

We all need to say thanks to those marvellous musicians most of whom died penniless never knowing how much they meant to us. The uniform of a 60's soul boy was a mohair suit 18 inch parallel trousers high 3 button jacket with an 18inch centre vent and 3 to 4 inch pocket flaps, ben sherman and a pair of comos. Not so much acrobatics (no room) everything was done with the music during middle eights and drum breaks. Dance your hearts out it doesn't matter when you start, it's when you finish.

I think its great to see the younger generation carrying the Torch to keep something alive that us oldies loved, and still love, but are a bit too old to have the same enthusiasm on the dance floor we once had. Keep the faith younguns... love to see you all dancing and having a good time.

I especially enjoy reading comments from Wigan Casino veterans - all sixty eight million of them, greater than the population of Britain, in fact, many of who went there before they were actually born. That place must have been massive! :) I bet one percent of them could actually find Wigan on a map.

Great enthusiasm.. reminds me of my youth, though I was dancing away merrily aged 11-12yo, and still remember the thrill of it all. There was dozens of dance halls in Edinburgh catering for Northern in the 7ts, and I was out almost everynight.. wish I could go back in time!

Being a soul fan from the early 60's the term ''northern soul'' never existed during the helicon days of theGolden Torch(Tunstall),Twisted Wheel(Manchester),Iron door(Liverpool) .However its great to see that its still being played and danced to in the 21st century. When we frequented the Torch in 1968, Wigan casino was the Empress ballroom and was 5 or 6 yrs away from opening. The Torch all nighters of the late 60's were superb.RIP all closed soul venues .Keep on Keeping on.

Fantastic to see so many young people into this great music and willing to show it by dancing their hearts out... It isn't too far from contemporary dance culture, just they know what they like in the way of music rather than the groove free pap which is spoon fed on the radio and in clubs these days... and where did the club culture originate anyway - yep, the Northern Soul scene. Keep the faith and keep dancing! Neil

Qualifications to comment. Twisted Wheel, 66-71 Torch,71 Mecca,71 Metro Bistro for the bust, Wigan75, but was put off there my people in vests carrying beer towels and dancing out of time with the music. Came back in 2009 fantastic to see all the young people getting into it some real good dancing. Sound systems still crap i wish they would upgrade.

Then I'm afraid she was lying to you.I went to the allnighters nearly every week during the "golden" era of '73 through '74 and never once saw any talc on the dancefloor. The chicks didn't wear those soppy old lady's flared skirts either. I can only surmise from this clip that the film is gonna be a complete crock of shit.

The best thing about this music is it evolves and believe me you do not need anyone approval either old ones form the bygone years like myself or new ones who are recent to what is an honestly phenomenal music scene which for the best part of 40+ years has kept out of sight from the mainstream. We have run rare soul popcorn rnb clb for nearly 11 years in Bishop auckland Co. Durhan every Turs night just so we could hear the music you are portarying well done keep up the good work Rgards Glen

There was a factory in Hebden Bridge in W. Yorks called Spencer's that made Soul bags ( the extra wide trousers ) and you could get them mail order from Blues and Soul magazine. Electron records in Burnley Lancashire where the record shop scenes are shot for the film is still a record shop and the listening booths are still there.

OK I gotta find myself a Northern Soul class or learn here on YT. Its funny I kinda already dance like this a bit not so much the flashier moves but definitely some of the footwork, the getting into the groove. I live in Canada and don't think its caught on here but it definitely should.

take it from me, a British Northern Soul lover & dancer for the last 35+ years, my Canadian friend. you don't 'learn' the moves per se', You have to watch & practice, practice, practice. non-stop. Believe me it WILL come

LunaticReason Hi, I am getting on a bit now but still love it, I can still do the footwork but not spins anymore due to a medical problem...loss of balance.lol but best way to learn is just put the music on and go with it...😆

Well said kidder, Northern Soul is not exclusive to any age group, just enjoy yourself la, dont let anyone tell you what your allowed to listen/dance to.
I am mid 40's too young to be a part of the Wheel/Wigan clique, but have had some boss nights at Blackpool(mid/late 80's) and at Soul clubs up in Yorkshire, i was pretty much one of the younger soulies, but have never encounted the bollocks some people have spouted on here...KTF la

Before we beat Frank to death let's not forget he's right. Northern Soul was a term coined by Dave Godin to describe the kind of music visting northern football fans visting his London record shop wanted. Mid tempo heavy bass bass line melodic and soulful not the stuff the shandy drinking southern jessies wanted, cause they couldn't dance. Before Dave called it Northern soul we called it Uptown Soul but that never really caught on. So what you have is a genre of music that doesn't actually exist

I mostly agree and I find it strange that no-likes-comments are faded out. (??? my english...) I find it strange and rather non-creative, if youngsters copy any 60s style as a mean of "finding something new". It was a underrated scene far away for their times that 50 years later appeared and being lived.
There were developments during the decades! Look at Prince, Q-Tip, ...
But anyway, the dancers here are really great

I wasn't talking about being 'against' parents as such. It's about being different from your parents' generation. Teenagers traditionally create new scenes, ideas and apply their creativity without their parents in tow.Like I say...the thought of myself wearing top mod clobber, chatting up and dancing with the opposite sex and digging cool underground soul tunes with my mum and dad dancing nearby is sick.Sadly, it appears that a form of Butlinisation of the northern soul scene is looming...

I agree with you concerning tracksuits and shopping precincts. What I find strange is the growing trend of teenagers, particularly up north, who are attending soul clubs with their parents. This to me is very odd and disturbing. All youth cultures, punk, mod, teds, skinheads stemmed from a source of rebellion against the system and parental control. An embryonic development from sectors of youth all of whom had one thing in common, away from parents, detached from the system and against the grain.

I was just reading a comment someone made:
They said that these kids basically don't dance like we used to in 1975 the good old days"
    Well why would they?
First of all, it's not 1975 anymore. These kids are doing their own thing; you can't expect them to dance exactly the way we did then! It wouldn't be real.
And guess what the only constant thing is change!
I stopped going to Wigan when they started to play "The theme from Joe 90" and other cringe music! like that..

I've never used drugs my entire life, Have been an avid record collector and music historian for decades. Back in the 50's or 60's no one in America were able to walk in to a record store and ask where the Titty Shaker, Boogaloo, or Northern Soul section was. Do you know why? Because it simply didn't exist. I challenge you or anyone else out there to show me an original 1950's/60's era sign that shows those genre's mentioned. Go ahead, i'm waiting
