Paul O well, corona-lockdown gives us a lot of time to look into stuff that you’ve always wanted to explore, but never had time to do that. Just a couple of minutes ago I checked Wikipedia article about Stone Roses and found out that northern soul was one of their musical influences. That reminded me of a girl I met at ska-party in Moscow with Trojan Sound System’s guys. We danced, talked about music and around 4.00 am left the club. Moscow subway starts its working hours around 5.00 am, so we talked more. She was properly dressed for a ska-party - checkered dress, leather boots. But at one point she said: yeah, ska is great, and i love it, but my absolute favorite is northern soul. I promised that i would check what this soul is about and why it’s called northern. I did that today and i should say, that this subculture is really something else, the vibe is strong and the moves are mesmerizing. So, yeah, you’re dad is definitely cool, you should be proud of him,. And i will certainly learn some moves myself to dance in self-isolation. I think I have yet another favorite thing in my life

a classic tune that puts the version by Soft Cell into the shade ( even though I am a fan of Soft Cell ) Northern Soul songs are the best songs about heartache ever...you can dance your blues away!
Omg I remember those day when everyone was made of rubber bouncing up down and sideways. Now I look at this and think yep that's what it was like but unfortunately now I make a squeaking sounds when i get up of the sofa. Oh well the memory's live on and I'm pleased to say so does the faith.
I came here because I found out my favorite song from synthpop duo Soft Cell was a remake! Wow! Now, I have to go investigate this "Northern Soul" music.
Our Battery did the firefighting in Wigan in the early 70s. Went to the Casino once just to please the girlfriend who was a fanatic, but made sure that I was on duty all the other nights it was on. Didn't mind the music, but couldn't stand the prats doing the gymnastics on the cloor.
i've always wondered why my knees are knackered .... after reading all the comments below , it seems we're all the same .... what i'd give for 1 last night at wigan .... out of all the many venues i went to , this one was at the top of my list , my god do i miss it and i'm so damn grateful that at 15 years old my mate persuaded me to go with him and the rest of the crowd that left the Palace in Rhyl that night ... i remember it like it was yesterday , even though it's now 46 years ago .... simply amazing ... and i still listen to the best music ever created ....
I was a punk back in '78. We wore drainpipes and got chased everywhere we went by the straights wearing solacios and highwaisters. I hated 'soulers back then. When punk was taken over by the poseurs I realised the same had happened to my music. It warn't the movement, it was the masses who'd assimilated our culture and made it mainstream. A few years later I look back on Northern Soul and to me it's one of the most astounding artforms I've ever seen. At the risk of pissing everyone off, it's an example of what makes our country so great. We took the music of discarded artists in the US (Gloria Jones/New York Dolls) and gave them the forum they really deserved. But even the Tamla artists must've been gobsmacked at your dance moves. - Imported back into the US in the early 80's that was the new dance craze that was Made In The USA - breakdancing...
Totally agree with that, ......the artists who performed on these amazing songs would never have been heard of if it wasn't for the UK soul scene. A scene that was driven by British working class youth wanting a 'certain' sound. I read somewhere that the geezers from Studio '54 visited Wigan in the mid-seventies and took all the ideas back to New York........where we had the 'BIRTH' of breakdancing?...... It was born in the North of England! X
Interesting, I was a Northern Souly and a Punk in 77/78. I remember going to an alldayer at the Birmingham Locarno wearing my tight jeans and chains. There was a big crowd into both styles.
Watching this reminds me why my knees are in such a state today! Loved it would do it all over again! Dancing to those old tunes, took you to another place, do ya no what i mean?
must have same knees as me richard! we couldnt find many northern soul venues at this time in sunderland,so we went to torquay for our holidays summer 75,thet had the 400 club and compass club playing northern soul.two weeks every night . i was wrecked at the end of it!when we came back we could dance like pans people! the lasses loved it.happy times

My dad used to go to the Twisted Wheel, all-nighters before walking back to Salford then he joined the army as it properly took off around the country. His legs and knees are well and truly knackered.
The guy in the green jumper was my best friend Nigel He was a great dancer we would travel on the bus from Windermere to Wigan all nighters together Makes me cry when I see him ❤️
I'm not strictly a fan of northern soul, I don't own any of the records and I can't name any acts, but I find it fascinating. The dancing is proper energetic and impressive and I do like the music. It's very upbeat, hence the Soul I guess.
I was born in the wrong decade! I wish I could have gone to places like this and enjoy yourself. These days you have to worry about having a glass shoved in your face.
dancing doesnt get any better or purer than this , was soul dancing in a bar in liverpool last week with a gorgeous chick man we gotta revive this scene
I'm dancing in this clip, at 0.41, the red waistcoat seen when the front dancers split. Didn't know there would be cameras that night. No mobile phones in those days. Travelled to Wigan from the birthplace of Vodafone.

I'm glad so many people have shared some memories and gave us their little personal cuts of Norther Soul's social history. thanks for all your amazing replies. Keep the faith !
i'm american so i never experienced this (i was too young at the time anyway). though i'm not much of a dancer and this is not the sort of thing i'd normally be into it does look like it was alot of fun. plus it gave english teenagers and twenty somethings a place to have a good time where no fights would break out (a very common occurrence in the u.k.).

That dancing is amazing! That music is amazing!
a classic tune that puts the version by Soft Cell into the shade ( even though I am a fan of Soft Cell ) Northern Soul songs are the best songs about heartache ever...you can dance your blues away!
Me & my friend at school Shane was there...We both appear in this vid..Happy Days..X :)
Omg I remember those day when everyone was made of rubber bouncing up down and sideways. Now I look at this and think yep that's what it was like but unfortunately now I make a squeaking sounds when i get up of the sofa. Oh well the memory's live on and I'm pleased to say so does the faith.
I agree with Paul wignall, proper music, proper people, long live northern soul
jen hutchinson I'm jealous that I wasn't part of it all ! looks great
Chris Tookey you still can be. lots of places are having soul dos. my fav is Brighouse or Skipton at the moment
Chris Tookey was the Greatest Show on Earth some movement

jen hutchinson .....respect 👍
One the best soul vids and Judy Street singing. Brilliant.
I came here because I found out my favorite song from synthpop duo Soft Cell was a remake!
Wow! Now, I have to go investigate this "Northern Soul" music.
Just loved Wigan bk in day full w/enders time gone to quick these days were amazing.
Can you feel the magic raising all the hairs on your body and your soul!!! Amazing
Those were the days! when music was music and dancing was fantastic, bring back the memories .... wish I was back there !
yes i agree......goosebumps
Only went to the Casino four times, the Army kept sending me away, but when I did go, it was Heaven on Earth. Loved it and will never forget it. KTF.
@@billmontgomery3032 why was that Bill?
@@Tech_Soul because he couldn't do it himself and his girl was impressed by the dancers no doubt
YAY I woke up 2 days ago singing this in my head i couldnt remember the name of it ive been searching youtube for 2 whole days i'm happy happy happy!
Miss my Wigan casino days👍😁
i've always wondered why my knees are knackered .... after reading all the comments below , it seems we're all the same .... what i'd give for 1 last night at wigan .... out of all the many venues i went to , this one was at the top of my list , my god do i miss it and i'm so damn grateful that at 15 years old my mate persuaded me to go with him and the rest of the crowd that left the Palace in Rhyl that night ... i remember it like it was yesterday , even though it's now 46 years ago .... simply amazing ... and i still listen to the best music ever created ....
i love this song!!! my mum always plays it! wish music like this was in the charts today!
well is would be number 1 in the charts.
Respect, love and gratitude, you are the Rose. Unlimited possibilities. Thank you for the good energy. Respect
Richard Hubbard : Absolutely so!
Interesting, I was a Northern Souly and a Punk in 77/78. I remember going to an alldayer at the Birmingham Locarno wearing my tight jeans and chains. There was a big crowd into both styles.
Summed it up perfectly..KTF.

You have a wonderful world of soul music waiting for you to discover.
And a lot of nice dancing people to meet.
KTF.
Oh how I wish I'd been there then... But then I was there for the early Ravescene 90-92. There's a lot of parallels. KTF!
One grew from the other
I'm not strictly a fan of northern soul, I don't own any of the records and I can't name any acts, but I find it fascinating. The dancing is proper energetic and impressive and I do like the music. It's very upbeat, hence the Soul I guess.
Knew after a while all the people there!!! And yuse to love it there EVERY weekend ❤
I was born in the wrong decade! I wish I could have gone to places like this and enjoy yourself. These days you have to worry about having a glass shoved in your face.
sad but true unfortunately
Hang with an old school soulster
Now they just check if their lips have shrank in the last 5 mins on their phones.
My husband is there 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This vid only had few thousand views last time I looked, whats going on? The world must be turning Northern, and about time too ;)
dancing doesnt get any better or purer than this , was soul dancing in a bar in liverpool last week with a gorgeous chick man we gotta revive this scene
I'm dancing in this clip, at 0.41, the red waistcoat seen when the front dancers split. Didn't know there would be cameras that night. No mobile phones in those days. Travelled to Wigan from the birthplace of Vodafone.

Brings back memories of going to Colemans and the Palais all day in Nottingham Long live northern soul
Great music and times, when everyone got along❤
im 16 and i think its amazing reading the comments of everyone who was there and misses this era, its still going though! there are still northern soul nights going on in manchester. but i think its sad that in terms of music my generation wont have this kind of musical revolution to look back on like you are now :(
I was going here in 1973/75 by 77 coachloads were arriving from all ovfer the country ................Love the days ,dont miss the sulphate !

I'm glad so many people have shared some memories and gave us their little personal cuts of Norther Soul's social history.
thanks for all your amazing replies.
Keep the faith !
May be a southerner from the the back streets of South London but love Northern soul
Proper music soul music gets into your soul
i'm american so i never experienced this (i was too young at the time anyway). though i'm not much of a dancer and this is not the sort of thing i'd normally be into it does look like it was alot of fun.
plus it gave english teenagers and twenty somethings a place to have a good time where no fights would break out (a very common occurrence in the u.k.).
