For me, what has always set PTX apart from other current a cappella groups are their arrangements. There’s a reason they are the most commercially successful a cappella groups today.
"Sound of Silence" was originally sung by Simon and Garfunkel, an American folk rock duo in the 1960s. It was written by Paul Simon, and they first released it in January, 1966. In the nearly 60 years since then, it has been covered by numerous bands and singers, including both Disturbed and #Pentatonix. I don't think you've listened to Disturbed's rendition but many people (not including me) like it better than Pentatonix's version - it's very powerful. Disturbed released their cover first so in many ways Pentatonix's version is a response to Disturbed. The best version comparison I've heard goes like this: Simon and Garfunkel warned us. Disturbed is angry that we didn't heed the warning. And Pentatonix says that it isn't too late - we can still save the planet if we're willing to make the effort. Is Pentatonix right? I don't know. But I'm CERTAIN that if we just give up we lose, so I'm with Pentatonix on this one. If they're wrong and it's already too late, at least we'll go down fighting for our planet, and that beats the heck out of the only other option I see, writing an angry suicide note.
I agree with you - it must be a special talent or skill to get their voices to blend so well. I think (with no musical training at all) that it’s because they listen so well to one another and consciously regulate their tone and volume so the whole effort can shine. Plus having really good sound engineers in the studio and for live performances, of course! Can’t Hold Us is a good choice to demonstrate their versatility. PTX can tackle pretty much any genre. Absolutely correct on getting the right people together to form a group. I’ve heard many great singers perform together but their sound wasn’t that good together. Yesterday I listened to an original song Scott wrote while still in high school that he and Mitch performed together in a teen talent show. You could tell they were in sync and sounded so good together even that young. There are videos of Scott, Mitch and Kirstie together while they were still in school that had that same feeling. The trio had been singing together for years before Scott put PTX together for Sing Off. They have trust in each other’s vocal abilities and years of working together honing their sound. Avi (and now Matt) and Kevin all brought them up to the next level with their training and fantastic skills. As Scott has said, without each one of them, there is no Pentatonix. Listen to their live performances at Pop Sping 2016, Hollywood Bowl 2022 and their 2023 Livestream. Seeing them do Daft Punk and Bohemian Rhapsody live is incredible. Also their cover of Kiss from a Rose live is pretty new. Some of their older covers are good too. Can’t Hold Us and Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis is just pure joy. Royals by Lourde, Radioactive with Lindsay Sterling, Gotye’s Somebody I Used to Know. There are hundreds to choose from and they are all amazing.

Kevin is Very Religious and observes the Sabbath so PTX never performs or expects him at any event. Next scene is Avi's mountain top and outdoor comfort for him. Kirstin talks about bringing on Broadway because she was in "Kinky Boots" and Mitch's line about "that's how Texas raised ya" is because the trio grew up together in Arlington, Texas USA. Every type of music includes rap to Country with Dolly Parton to their song with Jason Derulo. They just started with Chistmas because everyone knew the songs as they experienced accapella for the first time. Plus most Chrisrmas songs are in the public domain and they didn't have the money to spend on copyright and clearances. Every Pentatonix song is either Original or an Upgrade with clearance from the Artists. They are Amazing.
