  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Screen Legend Ava Gardner’s family, Ava Thompson and Ava Malissa Silver
    About Harvey's guest:
If you’re a fan of our show, you’ll know that one of our most popular features is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, featuring interviews with family members of some of the greatest and most beloved legendary stars of all time.
Today, we’re focusing on the fabulous Ava Gardner, an iconic actress who captivated the world not only with her breathtaking beauty, but by her earthy, magnetic screen presence in dozens of unforgettable classic movies, including “Showboat”, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”, “Mogambo”, which earned her an Academy Award Best Actress nomination and a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, “The Barefoot Contessa”, “On the Beach”, and “Night of the Iguana”, which earned her a Golden Globe Award Best Actress nomination, and a Best Actress Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. She also received 3 BAFTA Award nominations throughout her career.
And television fans certainly remember her recurring role as “Ruth Galveston” on “Knots Landing”. Ava Gardner’s hand and footprints are in the forecourt at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There’s a bronze statue of her overlooking the coast of Spain.
And the American Film Institute placed her at #25 on their list of the 100 Greatest Female Screen Legends of all Time.
Our guests are Ava Thompson, Ms. Gardner’s great niece and namesake, and her daughter Ava Malissa. They manage Ms. Gardner’s intellectual property, and they are co-trustees of the Ava Gardner Trust, continuing Ms. Gardner’s renowned legacy of generosity and compassion. On a personal level, their mission is to help the world see beyond Ava Gardner’s legendary beauty, talent, iconic fashion style, and all the myths surrounding her famous marriages and personal life. Ms. Gardner was much more than that - she was bold, courageous, independent, generous and kind - and very much a trailblazer and a role model who was way ahead of her time. Our guests are coming to us today from the Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield, North Carolina.

I’m a huge fan of the Golden Age of Hollywood, so I jump at every chance I get to interview the family of legendary movie stars. This interview with 2 of Ava Gardner’s nieces, filmed at the Ava Gardner Museum, was such fun. And if you’re a bourbon or coffee lover, the new Ava Gardner products we discuss in the interview will be of great interest.

Circa 1985, as a classic movie-mad teen I sent out about 35 autograph requests to my favorite Golden Age Hollywood stars. My mom threw in a request to me to also ask for her in my fan letters. I received responses from about half of the stars, and the one that blew me away the most came from London. Ms. Gardner honored my request with two beautiful, signed 8 x 10s, one for me and one for my mom. I still have these and cherish them, and was moved by Ms. Gardner's generous gesture. She was tops onscreen and off! "The Killers," "Showboat," and "Mogambo" are three of my favorite Gardner performances.

What a wonderful interview! Thank you very much to the Gardner family, for opening the doors so that we could meet this Ava who is much more than an actress, an incredible person, something visible in the eyes From this kind family. As a fan, I eagerly await the possible revised version of Ava Garder's autobiography With all the care that our Ava Gardner deserves. Greetings from distant Brazil! 😊💃🇧🇷

Harvey you are a great interviewer. When my husband and I made our many trips from NJ to Florida on interstate 95 we passed the signs for the Ava Gardener museum sure wish we stopped. I loved her movie, One Touch of Venus, with Robert Walker, haven’t seen it in years. I have seen all her movies over the years, the most beautiful woman ever created.❤

What a wonderful interview and it really states how Ava Gardner is even more relevant today than ever--she truly transcended the feminine mystique and was a compassionate, authentic woman. I truly enjoyed hearing both Avas speak about their wonderful aunt. And I have to say, the coffee and bourbon are top shelf--though I have to warn you--you may not be able to drink anything else after having them both! I should know! I've been truly spoiled by purchasing them and I'm on my second bag of coffee and second bottle of bourbon! I'm almost afraid to open my Ava sparkling wine! :)

They actually knew her. As a result their memories are accurate. Ava was the most beautiful woman of all time.

Good interview. I forget where I read about Ava injuring her face on horseback. It was in Spain and she spontaneously decided to get on one of the horses in the ring....Did not know that she did such good humanitarian works.

Becoming convinced that these commemorative museums for personages of the Golden Days/Greatest Generation are exactly what we should have in America. There may not be another generation to come up that will equal it; film memorializes these persons, and the museums are tangible expressions teaching our people history. I thought Ms. Gardiner was beatiful.

Another smashing interview Harvey The thing I think I love about Ava was her earthy quality and down to earth unpretentiousness Add to that a bawdy sense of humor She was one of the great stars and beauties of The Golden Age but also one of the most likable

Like Garbo, Bergman Dietrich and Crawford, Gardner had"IT" on the screen. Regardless of physical beauty (although it helps) that is a quality that is hard to explain.
You look at them regardless of what they are doing or whoever is in the scene with them.
    Nice and interesting interview. 🌹

George c Scott dated Ava from 1961 to 1964. They had a very volatile relationship with each other furled by alcohol and insecurity. George beat her viciously. And he was a goddamn animal. In her later years she suffered from lung ailment and frank sinatra helped her tremendously She died alone in London as she wanted. Frankie Sinatra junior talks of Ava’s kindness and generosity after the kidnapping

Thanks so much for this. To me Ava Gardner was always a bit of a scary figure - her perfect beauty made her (look like) a bit presumptuous, but I'm glad to hear that it was not really her. Anyway, she had the most beautiful and sexy face ever in this world, and I can easily imagine it was not always easy to live with that. How can U live being a day dream of millions of men..
And, OMG, those drinks - a brand name made in heaven. I hope I can get a taste of some of it. 😋
