    Thank you very very much for sharing your project with all of us. Amazing !! We can convert our existing cars like this yet we are faced with ridiculously expensive new electric cars. What a fantastic thing to do. convert existing cars and make continued use of perfectly sound chasis, transmissions, interiors.. I hope one day I can raise the cash to carry out a successful conversion...

    Very interesting and well explained. I would suggest using some oil when drilling holes in steel plate. I have a brand new 1965 mustang convertible body I built a couple years ago. The car has all new metal and a vin number. I am 76 years old and have messed with hot rods and classic cars my entire life with the exception of serving in Vietnam 68/69. I built this mustang with the idea of making it electric. I have a nice shop and right now I'm busy keeping two go karts running for my grandsons. As soon as the cool weather hits this fall my attention is going to be an electric classic mustangs. I have seen other electric mustangs on UA-cam and will certainly keep your videos as reference. Thanks

    Most of the parts for this project were salvaged. The electric motor and AC drive for it, and batteries all came from recycling. The individual battery chargers were ordered off E-bay.
    Entire cost of this project, including buying the car was in the neighborhood of $3000. Do a web search for "electric vehicle parts" to find costs for "off-the-shelf" parts.

    Electric MOTORS are used everywhere in modern society. The most typical ones are AC, as they run off house-hold alternating current. A motor like the one used on this AC car project could be mail ordered from an industrial supplier. This particular one was salvaged from a factory that shut down. I think the motor ran a conveyer belt. You can also mail order AC electric car motors from EV parts dealers.

  • @BenjaminNelsonX
    @BenjaminNelsonX  13 років тому

    @andreagrech89 This motor DID go back on the transmission.
    (I think it may have been a slightly different version of the same transmission. The guy Tom got the car from is a big Neon buff - I think he swapped the ACR tranny for a standard one.)
    Anyways, basically the electric motor went back on a more or less stock transmission - not some fancy one at additional cost.

    Friend, a big greeting from Colombia Latin America, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, your video is very interesting.
    Excuse me a question.
    Does it work with alternating or direct current and with how many volts and how many amps does your motor work, how many kilowatts is it?

    It's a Baldor industrial AC motor. The car is a Dodge Neon.

  • @BenjaminNelsonX
    @BenjaminNelsonX  12 років тому

    Yes, for one thing, in a front-wheel drive car, the transmission is what connects the engine to the wheels. Also, this particular AC motor isn't very high torque, so you need the gearing to get the right amount of power. With some high-torque DC motors, it is possible to put it right on the differential of a real-wheel drive vehicle.

  • @garybrown9719
    @garybrown9719 6 років тому +1

    You could use a scribe or silver pencil
    For more Accuracy
    To save time and not have to measure anything you could
    1st cut your motor shaft
    2nd install your love joy on to the transmission and set the set screw
    3rd install copler end on to dc motor
    And put rubber spider between and put everything together
    4th get a small thin straight edge and move the motor until bought couplers are square. ( May have shim under motor)
    5th now that they are square you can mark your dc motor holes with a transfer punch.
    6th remove dc motor drill holes and bolt back on
    This is an old school millwright trick
    And if you shim the motor your rubber spider will last 10x longer

    No I didn't. The project is Tom's. He's the guy on the camera. I'm the guy behind the camera. Tom works in salvage and recycling. Sometimes he can find real interesting things for free or cheap. This motor and the drive to run it came out of some sort of industrial equipment. If he didn't get it free, he got a good deal on it.

  • @Olaftr

    There are trade offs between aluminum and steel:
    1) Aluminum of the same strength would be twice a thick (but still lighter)
    2) I'm better at welding steel than aluminum.
    A face mount motor makes more sense to use Aluminum, you have less air flow area and you don't need to weld 2 pieces together.
    The motor (20 HP) I'm using doesn't transfer much heat to the mounting plate, its cooling is based on air flow.

    In this case, no. The car needs nearly 300V to run the AC motor system. Forklifts are only 36 or 48 volts. Forklift batteries are also usually VERY heavy and bulky. I haven't ever seen ANY electric car conversion that uses a stock forklift battery.

    I'm puzzled ...your useing an AC motor instead of a DC warp 9 inch motor for a EV Conversion with a Lovejoy coupler ?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  2 роки тому

      AC motors provide for features such as regenerative braking. It was also a very inexpensive motor, as Tom works in the recycling industry and can often find great deals because of that.
      There are various ways to connect the drive shaft of an electric motor to the driveline of a car. LoveJoy couplers have been commonly used with good success.

    "mating" the engine sharf with the transmission shaft is a huge problem, and to tell you the truth the way you did it, its impossible to find the "perfect" point to make it completely straight in a way you can say "this set up will never cause problems to my bearings, and it will last forever like it should". you can never join 2 sharfts pefectly. Instead you could have gove with a twin chain + 1:1 ration(or different ratio better fiting your set up) sprocket wheels.

  • @phillipgaley
    @phillipgaley 11 років тому

    " 'mating' the engine sharf with the transmission shaft is a huge problem"?
    No, . . . but, like a blind-hole transfer punch (which could have been used on the one blind hole in this project) you have to cut small diameter straight shaft shoulder bolts and screw them into close-fit tolerance holes threaded into the ends of the two shafts, then, checking run-out, raising or lowering, and using a precision level (which should have been used in setting up for the mounting and adapter plates), . . .

      need a separate motor (or a mount to hook up multiple pulleys to an electric motor), usually with shafts on both ends) to run the pump for the trani fluid. i read you only need it while the motor is not turning the transmission, but i cant confirm that myself

    I just don't see the savings yet from gas to electric. The cost is very high

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  Рік тому

      According to Kelly Blue Book, the cost of the average new car in the United States is nearly $50,000.
      In January 2023, we bought a brand new Chevy Bolt EV for $31K, (including tax, title, etc.) and expect to be able to take full advantage of a $7500 tax incentive.
      The car will never use a drop of gasoline or need an oil change. This greatly saves on fuel and maintenance cost over the life of the vehicle.
      Now, if you are comparing a brand new electric car to a 10 year old gas car that you already own, it would be very hard to compare the two just on finances.

  • @panoulis20
    @panoulis20 12 років тому

    Additionally i think the engine you used is too big and too heavy for this project..a smaller engine with a different set up in engine to transmission ratio (which would be allowed if you were to go with the chain and sprocket wheel setup) would allow easier rev.
