It's an *average.* It means that you take everybody who died in one time period (let's say, a year), note their ages, add all the numbers, divide them for the amount of people who died, and get 37 - *because most of them died in infancy.* That's why most "average lifespans" from times past (without vaccines, antibiotics, disinfectants, etc. but plenty of diseases) was so short. *It does not mean* that at age 37 most people dropped dead or that someone who was 75 was seen as if he were Methuselah.
      Check the concepts of mode, median, and mean (aka average). You are taking the mean for the mode.

      Very typical Japanese breakfast is natto, raw egg, miso soup, rice, small piece of salmon, and a small salad or set of pickles (tsukemono).

      Yes!! And please include water temperature, how to measure matcha powder accurately and the matcha powder to liquid. You know how US people like their lattes large. You can use 20 oz of plant milk to give as example : )

      If you don’t like the taste of matcha. Put it in 00 Gelatin capsule Using a small capsule machine.

      ​@@HolisticTake milk destroys the benefits of tea/matcha. Use only nondairy milk if you must make it into a latte to maintain the benefits. Matcha is best consumed plain. There are tons of YT videos on preparing matcha.

      I use coconut milk or soy for matcha lattes when I have them on occasion. But I drink at least 1 cup of matcha plain in the morning, which is how I prefer it. I also drink 1-2 cups of green or white tea a day. As well as 2-3 cups of rooibas and herbal teas.

    3:59 Yes! That's because since it's fermented, the bacteria did part of the digestion for us, so it's very easy to absorb. Fermented foods are amazing, not only very nutritive dense but also really good for our microbiota, I'm becoming more and more fascinated by the topic everyday. No wonder why japanese people are so healthy with the ammount of fermented foods they have

      @@amsteensberg1653 we in polish cuisine have a lot of fermented food! It is delicious and very healthy! I was shocked when people went crazy about kimchi 😅 i thought "guys, we had it aready! Maybe not so spicy..."

      Kimchi is overrated. Simply a product of PR 🤭 personally i'm not fond of korean food because almost everything is covered by color of chilies. unlike colorful japanese food.

    a s a brewer I am pleased that most foods mentioned are fermented. this is reason why we must consume more fermented foods. I make sour bread, natto and hot sauce.

    Absolutely well done video. I actually consume some of these aliments outside of Japan and I like it (Miso, natto and matcha), sadly I dont used to consume them every day. But umeboshi and amazake are a great discovery. Thank you.

    Shiquaza is great. But if you visit Okinawa, don’t forget to try Sanpincha tea. It is oolong tea scented with jasmin. Super delicious.

    Umeboshi and other traditional foods are great. Thank you for sharing and educating too.
    Caution:
    Sadly many of the traditional products have been altered with chemicals and fake “natural” flavours and more. People need to read the labels.
    Umeboshi these days is especially challenging with many products having “aminosan”.
    We need to watch out for MSG as some people may get headaches , hives, mental focus issues and more without realising the source was their health food.
    Miso is so delicious and energising while also being soothing. Keeps doctor away with healthiness. It is versatile as we can have it with a variety of ingredients or simply as is. However, miso too may have issues with small packages containing added chemicals and preservatives.
    Natto is the best if you can eat it, like a smelly sticky cheese. In Japan it is usually is not GMO or heavily from crops that were heavily sprayed but sources from overseas seem more questionable. Natto is an excellent product but make sure it is not from chemically laden sources or the health food is not so healthy.
    Best way, make own, but few have the time. The alternative is to find organic without chemicals.
    Amazake can be delicious even for people who do not like sake and do not like sweets.
    Shikuwaza seems so healthful! 😊

    Would love to know of a nearby place to find an affordable umeboshi that is organic, not with added chemicals. Alternatively a way to mail order affordable umeboshi that doesn’t have aminosan or such chemicals.

    Sir, if I may add one healthy Japanese food and one drink from so many out there to your list, it is nukazuke. I personally have a (Swiss-style, that is with oat bran instead of rice bran, which is hard to find here) nukadoko that I am cultivating since 7 years in my kitchen, and I love my almost daily pickled veggies made in it... いただきます ! Also, now, in summertime, I love to "shinobicha" my "koridashi" (to ice-extract my iced green tea). Finally, thanks for your fine videos, they are a treat!

    9:40 That reverse bento looks absolutely delicious! I Love umeboshi!! I eat them straight out the jar. In onigiri. I even heat up water and make a tea. They are sour! Flavorful! I even eat the shisho leaves that they are picked with❤❤❤

    I really hope that Samurai Matcha will launch an affordable matcha product and make it available in Taiwan. Some Japanese brands of matcha, such as Matcha Gokoro, Hizoudenrai, or Itoen, are hard to find in Taiwan.

    Amazake and umeboshi I found years ago… and are favorites. Although not necessarily readily available often.
    All good… and… also do the majority of the long life Japanese consume daily fresh fruits and vegetables. Those are equally superfoods to me.

    1. I love miso soup. 2. I tried and tried but natto is like eating stringy poop. 3. Shikuwasa is similar to the Caribbean naranja agria (sour orange), which I like as it is part of my culture. 4. Matcha is like swallowing liquid grass, not my favorite but maybe Aki's matcha will change my mind. 5. Umeboshi, love it. 6. Amazake, I had it before and liked it so i'll try again to find it. 7. Aki, handsome man.

    I have been visited Japan many times (8 times) in many different cities. I do really love Japanese food so much whenever when I go out or have a chance always take Japanese Restaurant which we have quite a lot in Thailand.From the list I assume I love almost all except Umeboshi. I like Japanese‘s life style. I also have a Japanese garden at home.

    I am curious for those who are unable to consume soy products, what superfood alternatives there are we could include in our diets? For my chronic health issues, I'm gluten free/wheat free, soy free, caffeine free, and dairy free. It's not by choice either. For example in place of coffee, I drink fresh squeezed juice from a lemon in plain tap water. That gives me energy and keeps me regular without the caffeine. I'd love to learn more about alternatives to incorporate into my diet.

    In my language natto is called as chembic, kinama, or akhoni the fermented soya bean. I like it's slippery texture and dominating flavour.

    Let’s point one thing out here. The difference in life expectancy from the number one spot to the number eight spot is 15 months. The Italians are known for drinking wine and coffee, and eating lots of pizza and pasta with meat sauces. Honestly, and I am not joking one little bit, I will give up those 15 months of life and order to enjoy my entire life.
    Don’t get me wrong, I like Japan it has a lot of good points. I’ve lived here for 35 years and have no intentions of going back to the United States even for a friggin visit in large part because of the political situation back there. But this thing in Japan of “It’s good for your healthy human life.’ gets old. I’ve made it to the age of 70. Given my paternal male lineage seems to die off before the age of 85, I don’t have long to live. So I don’t really care about these super foods. And I wouldn’t advise anybody to jump on that bandwagon in order to just live an extra 15 months. Enjoy life.
    For me enjoying life playing golf. I just had major surgery on my shoulder so that I can continue to play golf. When I can no longer play golf and I have problems getting around Amazon sells helium and gas masks and you can set that up very easily for a euthanasia machine .     I am a Japanese born in America and loved all but one that I have not tried and natto. Sorry, I love ikanoshokara but can't stand natto - even though it has great health benefits that I was not aware of. I look forward to Samurai Matcha. Thank you for educating me!

    I’ve been living in happy and I love omeboshi, is definitely one of my favorite superfood in Japan. Amakaze and natto are not my favorite one but I can eat them for my health

    Could you maybe do another video on how to make Amazake at home? I have a rice cooker but would really love a chance to make my own. Thanks. Ume Plums are amazing and are great for preventing those monthly cramps and just easing a lot of PMS.

    Oregato! It was very interesting. I'd really like to try Natto and Umeboshi. I also heard that Japanese sweet potato (the name starts with M, purple skin but white inside) is also considered a super food.. 🤔

    You left out cup noodles 🤣 I've tried all of these apart from the Amazake and Shikawasa. I live in Europe and these days I can get all of these fairly easily with the exception of Shikawasa. Thank you for the video, Akisan 🙏

    I loved this video. I really care about elevating health. I was a little surprised konjac/ konnyaku was not on here. I heard years ago it was a Japanese anti-aging superfood.

    I visited Japan last autumn and try natto. I’m disappointed it was not bad how I hear about it, it was nice and I like natto. I like umeboshi, shirasu, dango and matcha of course ❤

    I have started to eat natto with my oatmeal porridge. First it tasted like sweaty socks but now I like it!

    Love these suggestions - I hope to get to a shop in Oregon that carries natto - I've tried making it after watching some of the Ikigai Diet videos, using mint stalks for the natto-kin ....
    (And just crotched a little Nebaaru-kun amigurumi 😊) .... I make my own yogurt using coconut milk and appreciate fermented foods.

    米麹を仕込んで納豆、甘酒に。自慢の梅干しは庭で育てた梅と赤紫蘇。
    抹茶だけは自家製出来ず市販品に頼っていましたがこちらのMatchaは
    全く別物。そんな折chafinityで本物抹茶を購入。大満足です。
    普段から意識せず只好きで食べ続けて来た日本の食は唯一無二。

    That is so interesting to hear that people who were exposed to the atom bombs there would get through it better with their miso. Misco really is incredibly.
    Too bad I found out soy bloats my body (I was eating it regularly for a while too). I tried nato once. I think it was pretty good. It would take some getting used to. I loved learning about a couple foods I never heard of before.
    My maternal great-grandma and paternal great-grandfather lived to 90. They both gardened and believed in clean living and not owning much. I believe they didn't stress much. Also, my great-grandmother had 8 children, some in her 40s and it is stated that if women have babies in their 40s, they are more likely to live to 100. Pretty cool.
