The graph view is excellent for a bottom-up approach to organization. Spam files out, tag them however you feel like, figure out what goes with what, what random connections you can make along the way, etc. Then you go through every so often to group and structure things so they're easier to navigate. If you have one tag with many connections, it becomes an index file. One of my indices is math. I have a lot of notes on that as a math major. It's good for my ADHD brain, where I can throw bullet points down in a daily note, then go back through once every week or two to pull things out of that, then organize them later if I can be bothered. The canvas is much more deliberate. It seems better for deeper, more careful research and inquiry than the very spontaneous nature of the bottom-up approach. I'll likely leverage that the next time I (have to) write an essay.
You can edit the metadata of a file from within the data view list or table, or a canvas, without having to open the file and manually changing it. 😲 This is wonderful! Thank you!😀
Just blown away with the homepage / dashboard use case. Ive been using the tracker and multicolumn plugins and watching things groan. I moved to this over the weekend and its way more useable. Thank you very much !
I had no idea you could set it up so that moving things around would change the properties. I haven't yet looked at properties, I guess now I should. Thanks for a very helpful video!
Since I found Canvas Candy from you, it's been handy for making those kinds of charts and graphs. Although on mobile, the front matter is tedious and not easy to type each time.
Excellent tutorial, Danny! But I'm curious about the query for the To Add-card in the Media Library section: What query strings do you use to create a table with files not already on the canvas?
@@DannyHatcherTech Thanks - but I still don't get it! :) At 3:36 you are adding "Conscious Coaching" as a new book to your library. But from what I can tell, there is no property in the YAML that specify wether that book is represented on the canvas or not. At 3:41 it shows up in the To Add query at top of the canvas. So I guess that mean that there is some way to have a Dataview query that filters based on wether a file is on the canvas or not? Embedding a file on a canvas doesn't create a link between canvas and file, so basing that search on links isn't an option. And that's the only thing I can think of, and I find no other ways when browsing Dataview's documentation either. :)
Hi, my inner Monk wanted to tell you to sort the VARK cards so they match the acronym: Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, Kinaesthetic. Thanks for all the cool canvas tricks!
I am still a noob at obsidian but I am trying to create something like you're doing at 3:21 but with youtube videos. I usually have my browser filled with tabs open with links of youtube videos that I am trying to watch and at one point it becomes too much and I can't read the titles of what I am trying to do unless I open them one by one. Also if they have to do with learning, it takes time to go through a single video and understand it before opening the next. which causes a flux of youtube links to be opened up for different topics having different priority. To this, I would keep a 'Keep' pile which would have a Ghostreader summary along with what I think/learnt from it and a discard pile without a self written abstract on why it was non-optimal. Your video helps a lot!!
I am curious to know how the new properties in Obsidian will integrate into your workflow. Full disclosure, I haven't investigated how properties might overlap with metadata menu plugin.
(sorry if I missed it) but i feel like this doesn't scale sometimes? Like, if you've read hundreds of books. Then the 'read' section in that canvas would just get massive, right? (Just asking)
I wondered that but then thought you could probably limit the query to the last 5 etc then have a separate data view note that is purely your watched films that you could then sort in whichever way you prefer.
want to ask, why i drag and drop image to obsidian canvas, there is duplicate in vault, is there a way to address the image directly from the original drive without duplicating it to the vault
If Obsidian sees the image in the vault it will use the same path unless you have directed it to search in a different folder. Then it will make a copy of the image in the new folder. A new image will also be made if the names dont match.
@@DannyHatcherTech thanks for your reply, So there's no setting that can prevent it from being duplicated to the vault, right? I just want to drag and drop directly from Windows Explorer to the canvas with the original path address
@@fannycarlo9443 when you drag it in if the filename or path doesnt match the existing image it will create a new file - the image maybe the same but Obsidian thinks they are different. Likely a pasted image v named image filename.
What a myriad amount of possibilities! But i wonder is there a templater for canvas, cause it would be such a game changer if so, btw love your videos, it helped me a lot :]
Love your use of Canvas, but would you suggest using limited number of rows in a page for example in your case "Article Ideas". Would you ever use a page in a canvas with a large number of rows of information( I have some with many gene listed) and wonder if you would suggest using canvas in some alternative way. While I do know you can scroll, I just wonder if there might be a better way to display in a canvas. Still working my way through the video, so this could be addressed later on.
the Graph view would be awesome if auto-linking and improvements to filter and sort where added. i don't know how well is uses available hardware, but i want it to be able to auto-link according to a category of terms (like in ide's) and relationally, large bases of text spread across many folders.
Moving cards in canvas changes the properties of the items, and they are well-formatted, which might be analyzed by ChatGPT with prompt engineering. This means one can create a map by the visual approach ( moving cards) and then throw them to LLM to generate the text based on the map. I feel SO excited about this!😂
What would be the difference in purpose between article and research note for you? I think I have a hunch from your other videos, but wanted to clarify. I'm trying to understand what I can use for my purpose, but in my case it seems articles are just smaller research notes
Does anyone know how to use file recovery for a canvas? When I do is usual prompts, all it does is copy paste a ton of jargon into a single card, when what I want is for the original canvas to come back!
@@DannyHatcherTech Thanks for responding, on a side note, would anyone know why the bookmark menu, despite being lengthy, all of a sudden only displays a short few, and then when scrolling between the zoom size, influences this, but now only shows the full list when Zoomed out to the max, meaning, everything is all tiny now, but the bookmark list is finally Displaying the full list, but then as soon as I move up one Deviation, it goes all Askew again?
