Thanks for this video man! I started using Obsidian pretty casually about a year ago. This video inspired me to start really upgrading my Vault over the last few days. I’m using your CSS snippet for the sidebar folder colors and I absolutely love it. Awesome stuff.
I cannot stress this enough. This video is legit perfect it just adheres to the frequency of my entire being or something. I have a lot of similar interests as you editing (after effects mostly). I go to a CS uni and I can’t figure out how to make a good note taking system forever. It seems like all the information just fades in and out of my brain over time. I’m always thinking about how to optimize/organize everything to the point that I don’t even try to start with it. One day I’d like to be more like you! Can’t wait for more videos to come!

never realized obsidian could look this clean and each different note style so varied. im just getting started w obsidian and know nothing about css but you’ve convinced me to bash my head against a wall until i can somewhat replicate what you’ve got going on.
Being able to customize the themes of notes like this while still keeping everything in simple markdown files is one reason why I love Obsidian so much - And CSS isn’t too bad to pick up, you can get a lot going with just the basics like changing colors and font styling and all that. After having used Evernote and Notion for years, I always had the feeling that they quite weren't doing the job I required them to do. There's a plug-in I think you might like. It's called leaflet, and it originally is used to add pins over a fantasy map. I'm a new user! I heard some many good things about this app and I couldn't get any more excited! ...Seeing this video gave me a headache but I'm more happy to learn 😂
This is great! This is fantastic! I love this video so much. Although, a part of me feels guilty to have access to a wonderful, organized and well thought out obsidian vault... Meanwhile you probably had to go through trial and error to get it to be so organized 😕 i hope you keep uploading and i look forward to any future content you post! Obsidian or anything else.
Love this video. I just switched everything from Notion to Obsidian. Their focus on Notion AI was okay to start with but felt it just messed my notes up. Linking notes and seeing them in a visual way is wonderful in obsidian. Love the Field Notes look - I'm only scratching the surface of Obsidian and what I can do with it. I might play around with my own personalisations after seeing this (once I get some spare time :D). Will check out more of your content moving forward.
Honestly, I already started using Obsidian a while back, but I got discouraged. I couldn't get it to look the way I want, I couldn't find a good way to organize it, and from that I just stopped using it. After this video though, I am so hyped to start getting into the nitty gritty. I'm already a programmer in their beginning stages, but I'm really stoked to get into css, as I was unaware I can style pages with css. I always thought I had to settle on one font for all pages, period. I never even questioned whether there was a way to do this. Long comment short, this video motivated me to really make my obsidian vault MY obsidian vault. Thanks for the motivation, and for a starting point to get my vault off the ground! Really quality video, great voiceover, amazing explenations, smooth animations! Keep working at it, you're going places!
Thank you so much!! All the styling possible CSS is really what got me more interested in developing my vault further as well. Markdown files are great for long term use and portability, but it can get tiresome looking at the same old kinds of notes everyday. Happy to hear I’ve given you some motivation! 😁
@@cyanvoxel Just another question, how exactly would one go about organizing Notes about specific topics? As an example, I am currently studying computer science in University, and I'm unsure on how to structure my notes for the courses. Would those go into Areas? Do I make a subfolder for each semester with subfolders for each course, maybe even subfolders for each topic in those courses? Or would it be better to use tags? Or do I not do those things at all and just use links to organize my topics with "main" pages that link to subpages? How do I organize those pages? Or do I at all? And when I'm taking notes during lectures, do those go in fleeting? Just a little guidance on how to start this off would be amazing, it's a lot to take in in the beginning. Thanks for any help! And once again, great video. I don't even know whether you asked to "SUBSCRIBE AND RING THAT NOTIFICATION BELL", but even without you asking for it, that already happened. :D
@@profpyrus9247 Hey! So I’m actually at a similar stage with Obsidian as you. Recently began upgrading my Vault after the inspiration from this video. Also a beginner programmer using Obsidian for notes😂 Anyways, I’m no expert, but I thought I’d share what helps me with the kind of questions you have. So first - remember that nothing is permanent. Like coding, you can approach your Vault with a constant re-factoring mindset. Yes, having a perfect plan to execute means less work down the line. You won’t have to go back and re-edit anything. But it usually isn’t realistic. You won’t know what style of organization (tags or folders) works better for you until you try both, etc. So try stuff! There is no ‘right way’ to organize. At the end of the day, it’s what works best for you. It’s your Vault. One trick I’ve been using for considering where to put a note or folder for optimal organization is asking myself “where would I look for this first?” I just started using CyanVoxel’s PARA/Zettelkasten system as well. For my CS course notes, I actually haven’t decided where to put them. I’m thinking in a ‘Coding’ folder under ‘Areas’ in folders organized by course. Another consideration is putting them in ‘Permanent’, but I haven’t quite decided what my permanent folder will be used for or if it’s even necessary for me to keep around. I use ‘Fleeting’ for quick notes or observations throughout my day. Hope that helps!
Thanks for smashing that notification bell! 😉 So for something like course notes (I can relate to CS especially), what I do is I try to ignore the courses entirely when it comes to thinking of how to organize them. Knowledge is knowledge, no matter where you've obtained it from. So with that in mind, personally I break up all my CS notes by the broadest categories I can, or that I at least think of them as. So under a main "Computer Science" folder, I have subfolders for Algorithms, Networking, Hardware, Server, etc. I also want to add that I use Tags primarily to categorize, especially nested tags such as "CS/Programming/Java" or "CS/Linux/Server" in order to really finely organize things - folders for me are more of a way to visually break up the files themselves. The beauty of all this is that over time, you can include additional notes and information gathered from outside your courses, but they'll fit right into your vault! Now, obviously that won't do you a whole lot of good for trying to study material linearly for a class haha. For this, I'd recommend creating a Map of Content in addition to this that outlines and links to your notes as they would appear in your courses. This gives you a more traditional notebook outline of your studies, but doesn't disturb the underlying tag or folder structure. Also, I'd just like to wholeheartedly agree with @CashsCoffee 's reply here! Your mindset and way of thinking may very well be different than mine, and there could be other methods that work better for you but less so for me - the only way to find out is to give it a go! Hope that all helps or gives you some ideas! 😁
@@CashsCoffee @cyanvoxel Thanks to both of you for these delicious nuggets of wisdom! Now that you say it, that definitely was my brain going into it's endless pursuit of perfection. Especially cashcoffee's remark of "nothing in my vault is permanent, everything can be refactored and reworked for my needs" is something I'm probably gonna need to remind myself of. Alot. xD So then, I'm probably going to start off with a similar approach as Cyanvoxel described it; put my uni knowledge in generally categorized folders, and give them tags for more specified distribution into topics, but especially into which Uni courses they're from, as I wanna try the approach of boiling it all dkwn into atomic notes that I can use to study like with Anki, just directly in Obsidian. Alright, I think that's enough walls of text from me for now! Thanks again for both of your replies! Time get my new Obsidian journey off the ground. (I love the internet man, in the right places you just meet the nicest people I swear it's beautiful)
I like the crash course on zettle and para, I've wanted to get into both, but this simplified it enough for me to have a proper understanding of. Zvolt introduced me to the terms but his exmaples go so far in depth (good but overwhelming). Your explaination was super approachable, and i feel like i could free-style a similar system off the bit of context you provided.
First time subscribing to a UA-camr in a while, holy crap this program is amazing! I struggle to keep track of my Projects (Area's I suppose haha!) with flurry's of Google Docs, tabs and applications. Its been a nightmare. I just set up some really basic stuff based on your template (thank you!) such as definitions for all of the categories and I am already in love! PS: You should totally make a Discord!! Would love to talk to other creators/have people for Obsidian Support
One major thing that always trips me up when I try to use Obsidian is linking. I will rarely think to link a note, which I assume is a matter of habit, and I will often not know what notes I should link. It also feels really annoying to have to pull out my phone and/or open Obsidian every time I have a thought to write it down, while also keeping all of the aspects of actually organizing said thoughts within the Vault. It turns the mere act of existing into a chore, and makes me feel guilty every time I miss a daily note until I give up, entirely. It's a lot like counting calories, I just realized. I have yet to see a video talking about how a person actually starts incorporating the use of Obsidian into their daily life. Not how they organize their Vault, but how they went from not writing down their thoughts to making it a habit to do so without feeling like they're magnifying their device addiction.
@@GeorgeInTech Maybe that’s the big fundamental difference between me and people who use these apps. I’ve never taken notes for much of anything at all, so I’ve never made it a habit.
for me, it helps to have a kind of daily "scratchpad" note. for anything that isnt a deliberate planning session, i just take down a few informal sentences in a separate scratch folder, where each note is named after the current day (and i dont do this anywhere near every day). sometimes i scroll through my backlog of a few days worth of notes, and turn those short informal bullet points into links to new docs in the appropriate folder. i rarely link separate proper notes together, unless its for something like a recipe "hub" thats a list of items separated by category that links to the actual expanded recipe note
Hello there, i think is a matter first out of neccesity, when one need to hold much information that can be needed another time, one tends to write and hold the notes more naturally, same case with Obsidian, or any other thing, when we need to have a space where to guard the info, and it can be expanded upon other topics that's when the links comes to shine i guess. For me it work to have a representation of what topics are far ahead or what are much closer than thought at first instance. Another element you mentioned is the daily note taking, is not really necessary, one have to remember the routines of life tend to be quite inconsistent, so be no afraid to have miss one day or two, is a mark of the doings, even when silence appears, there is a message there. Have a good day.
8:28 The example game design document you have up sounds like a more well thought out version of an idea I have tried to make before. Gosh I hope you have some success (or at least publish the ideas). I have been failing to make that game for a long time.
Wow, there are children all over the world that are disappointed because there was no food for supper and you get disappointed over a channel with just 5 videos. Incredibly how superfluous our western culture has become.
I'm so glad I watched this, if only for the Smart Typography plugin. I was making do Typing Transformer, but it wasn't a perfect solution for this at all.
I've been using Obsidian for years, and my main vault started off with importing years worth of content from my previous notetaking app, Simplenote. I spent some time while I was setting it up organizing things into a rough heirarchy based on how they were tagged in Simplenote and tried to maintain that structure while adding to it, but I've been thinking recently that the entire vault needs a massive re-organization because the current system is becoming incressingly less usedul to me. This video may well prove to be an excellent jumping-off point for when I start that rework.
Honestly I would love an hour long video with the most nitty gritty stuff that is the core of what you use and why.
Specific settings, groupings, etc

Wow, love the style of your vault!
I'm a new user! I heard some many good things about this app and I couldn't get any more excited!
...Seeing this video gave me a headache but I'm more happy to learn 😂
Excellent content. Thank you for sharing.
Obsidian or anything else.
dude, this vault is crazy. I already love that 😍😍👌👌
Love this video.
Also a beginner programmer using Obsidian for notes😂
Anyways, I’m no expert, but I thought I’d share what helps me with the kind of questions you have. One trick I’ve been using for considering where to put a note or folder for optimal organization is asking myself “where would I look for this first?”
I just started using CyanVoxel’s PARA/Zettelkasten system as well.
So for something like course notes (I can relate to CS especially), what I do is I try to ignore the courses entirely when it comes to thinking of how to organize them.
@@CashsCoffee @cyanvoxel
Thanks to both of you for these delicious nuggets of wisdom! Now that you say it, that definitely was my brain going into it's endless pursuit of perfection. Especially cashcoffee's remark of "nothing in my vault is permanent, everything can be refactored and reworked for my needs" is something I'm probably gonna need to remind myself of. Alot. xD
So then, I'm probably going to start off with a similar approach as Cyanvoxel described it; put my uni knowledge in generally categorized folders, and give them tags for more specified distribution into topics, but especially into which Uni courses they're from, as I wanna try the approach of boiling it all dkwn into atomic notes that I can use to study like with Anki, just directly in Obsidian.
Alright, I think that's enough walls of text from me for now!
Thanks again for both of your replies! Time get my new Obsidian journey off the ground.
(I love the internet man, in the right places you just meet the nicest people I swear it's beautiful)
This is simply amazing! Thank you so much for this video.
Man, that is incredible!! I could not imagine how far can go with obsidian.
PS:
You should totally make a Discord!! Would love to talk to other creators/have people for Obsidian Support
And I thought my Obsidian vault was unnecessarily complex. Sir, this is just utter madness!
Best of Obsidian customization! Thanks
You’re absolutely insane and I love it so much
the vault is cleannnn man
great system. the video has been useful to me. also appreciating the video creation competence.
Damn this is freaking awesome
Not how they organize their Vault, but how they went from not writing down their thoughts to making it a habit to do so without feeling like they're magnifying their device addiction.
exactly, you are so right...
I mainly make notes out of necessity, not because I feel like I need to make them for the system... interesting take though
Excellent content. Thank you for sharing.
love the editing, great video!
amazing. purely therapeutic. thanks for sharing
The best "quality-quantity" UA-cam channel so far.
5 videos, 5 useful masterpieces
8:28 The example game design document you have up sounds like a more well thought out version of an idea I have tried to make before. Gosh I hope you have some success (or at least publish the ideas). I have been failing to make that game for a long time.
Thank you for sharing this one.
Freaking love it! 😂
Incredible estate Obsidian!
You can't imagine how dissapointed i was as i clicked on your channel recognizing you only have 5 videos. 😢😢
I didn’t even notice until you said so. DAMN IT. I came from the TagStudio video. I subbed and turned on the bell tho!! Pls more videos
@@snarf8115did the same thing. Downloaded Obsidian and everything based on his stuff.
I want him to do a full hour long dive on his vault
Wow, there are children all over the world that are disappointed because there was no food for supper and you get disappointed over a channel with just 5 videos.
Incredibly how superfluous our western culture has become.
@@snarf8115quality over quantity
Haha same, zaubermannic. Your obsidian notes should be treated as art, holy melony, this is beautiness, Leonard da Vinci would be jealous
best best best , thank you bro!
Dude................................... that's amazing!
Thanks for the new addiction
it is clearly highly-additive procrastination
@@nothing2449 I did actually start writing with it once I installed a bunch of cool plugins and it is a very nice experience
I'm so glad I watched this, if only for the Smart Typography plugin. I was making do Typing Transformer, but it wasn't a perfect solution for this at all.
It was so good. I literally logged into different account to click like and sub button the second time.
SOOOOO BEAUTIFUL
I've been using Obsidian for years, and my main vault started off with importing years worth of content from my previous notetaking app, Simplenote. I spent some time while I was setting it up organizing things into a rough heirarchy based on how they were tagged in Simplenote and tried to maintain that structure while adding to it, but I've been thinking recently that the entire vault needs a massive re-organization because the current system is becoming incressingly less usedul to me. This video may well prove to be an excellent jumping-off point for when I start that rework.
2:40 "yeah :)"
As soon as I heard that I came here to make the same comment
