    For those struggling: dv.pages('"Class"').map(p => p.file.name).
    There should be a ' and then " before and after the folder.

    Just a small feedback Dan, as another comment had mentioned, this is an insanely complicated setup for Obsidian, and „Beginning again“ feels like it‘s wrong, as the content doesn‘t actually show what Obsidian is supposed to be used for, which is linking ideas!
    It’s too much into the dataview plugin and setting things up, that if I were a beginner with Obsidian, I‘d be turned off already seeing this. This feels a lot like for someone who‘s already an intermediate in Obsidian, and wanting to supercharge it for their UA-cam/article/thesis research so they can have things at in a quick glance (a la Project Manager)
    It‘s too much overengineering as the other comment said, but I still appreciate the content now I get ideas on using Dataview and Canvas as a homepage.
    It‘d be more fitting if the title was, „How I built Obsidian as my Research Manager tool from scratch“

    TBH this tutorial was very hard for me to follow as someone completely new to Obsidian coming from Notion. Too much "what" you were doing, not "why" you were doing it. Sure someone could follow you long exactly and make a copy of what you made, but without knowing why you're doing it it's very hard to adapt it to your own system or really tweak it in any way. I'm the kind of person that wants to know the "why" so I can full understand. I don't want to just follow a recipe step by step to make a thing, I want to know why you're adding those ingredients, what each one does, what would happen if I changed it slightly, how I could change it to get my own desired result, etc. Like at about 20 minutes into the video you just start talking about Workspaces, installing plugins, without any explanation or context to what a Workspace even is, why you're doing it, what you're hoping to achieve, etc. Very jarring, I tried rewinding the video a few times because I was convinced I had missed something.

    • @DannyHatcherTech
      @DannyHatcherTech  10 місяців тому

      Agreed. This was a what video over a why video. I have done various videos about my why's for certain setups but Obsidian is like Notion in that each system will differ and is up to personal preference.

      @Taylor,
      As a newbie to Obsidian, I struggled for months to establish a workflow for my projects, articles, and notes. Here are some challenges I faced:
      - Excessive mouse usage instead of writing
      - Having to navigate to different files to change templates or classes
      - Not utilizing Canvas or Workspace
      - Initially not understanding the QuickAdd Plugin, though it's a blessing now for quick notes
      Following the tutorial was tough since I wasn't used to keystrokes, and @Danny's video lacked keystroke capture. To cope, I:
      - Slowed the video to 0.75x to match @Danny's fast pace
      - Watched the video twice before replicating
      - Noticed some missing steps in the tutorial, but Danny's workflow was clear (saving the workflow and Commander)
      Overall, this is the best tutorial I've seen for a clean Obsidian setup, especially the Dashboard setup on Canvas. By the way, don't disable 'confirm on delete'-restoring from the Recycle Bin on Windows is easy.

    Well, this is some insanely complicated setup for such a small result. This can be done in Notion with ease. Hell, this can easily be done with the Kanban plugin and some tags! You people need to stop overengineer.

    • @DannyHatcherTech
      @DannyHatcherTech  Рік тому +4

      Interesting perspective. Not sure how Notion can do the canvas view for showing multiple query results. To my knowledge, you would need to do a lot of scrolling.
      Not sure how the kanban plugin in Obsidian gives the flexibility to change property information without going into the file. Maybe there is an update I have missed.

    • @saggygnaw
      @saggygnaw Рік тому +7

      Perhaps, but in this case you actually own, store, and are responsible for the security of your own data rather than having it stored on a server somewhere where you have precisely zero control over how your data is managed.
      Additionally if you want “premium” features with Notion you have to cough up the dough whereas with Obsidian you can either implement a pre-built plugin or *gasp* learn to make one to suit your individual purposes.
      Furthermore, you’re only limited by disk space on your end. Does Notion allow you to store every reference PDF you’ve ever downloaded and then apply OCR for easy searching and cross referencing? Because Obsidian does and it’s ridiculously simple, free, and also doesn’t require me to upload a ton of files to a cloud server (my local files are synced to cloud, hence no need to manually upload).
      Yes, Notion does have a lot of great features and is very useful, but what prevented me (and others with whom I’ve discussed this) from sticking with it is the lack of modularity in personalizing the system to fit individual needs, not to mention the fact that your data is stored in a non-local proprietary format.
