Excerpts from a letter written by Albert Einstein to Eric Gutkind from Princeton in January 1954, translated from German by Joan Stambaugh. It will be sold at Bloomsbury auctions on Thursday "... I read a great deal in the last days of your book, and thank you very much for sending it to me. What especially struck me about it was this. With regard to the factual attitude to life and to the human community we have a great deal in common. ... The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. These subtilised interpretations are highly manifold according to their nature and have almost nothing to do with the original text. For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions. Einstein letter continued: "In general I find it painful that you claim a privileged position and try to defend it by two walls of pride, an external one as a man and an internal one as a Jew. As a man you claim, so to speak, a dispensation from causality otherwise accepted, as a Jew the priviliege of monotheism. But a limited causality is no longer a causality at all, as our wonderful Spinoza recognized with all incision, probably as the first one. What separates us are only intellectual 'props' and 'rationalisation' in Freud's language. Therefore I think that we would understand each other quite well if we talked about concrete things. So very glad you're back with us. Thank you. I, for one, would not have survived the pandemic still sane without this series. I play one episode daily and enjoy sharing them with friends and colleagues. Thanks again to all.

Somehow, it seems that I've learned something new, or gained a different perspective, or something else, or some combination of these things just about every single time. It very well might be literally every time, but I prefer to avoid definite language in most circumstances. As such, Doc, I have to let you know that, to me at least, these outcomes are an excellent indicator of an outstanding teacher. So; Thank you, Professor Greene!
A topic that Brian Greene broaches in his recent book "Until the End of Time" that I was so thankful for, was existential issues regarding death for those who do not believe in an afterlife. He described his process and stages of coming to terms with this in chapter 1: The Lure of Eternity: Beginnings, Endings, and Beyond. Facing your own permanent cessation of existence, can be one of the most difficult things for the ego to transition through the stages of grieving and reach acceptance of. It was so comforting, validating, and needed, to hear his analysis of this topic that those of us who do not believe in an afterlife, or immortality and subsequently struggle to come to grips with as described in Earnest Becker's "The Denial of Death'". Thank you Brian for expanding, enriching, and soothing my outlook on life, death, and reality of the universe. My respect and admiration toward you is boundless.......and I too am vegan for ethical reasons.

Dear Brian, You are one of the best scientists + great lecturer. I enjoy your explanations of physical subjects very much: good examples, simplified language and intelligent humor. Thank you! It would be great if one of your presentations would cover the "known unknowns" in physical sciences - I mean particular unsolved problems and discrepancies between theory and experiments. Such a collection/system of critical "unknowns" usually helps me to find something in common between seemingly unrelated issues. It also helps to pose right questions and induces new ideas. Brian fascinates me how you talk, formulate thoughts and resist when you talk about a topic to Ideas that are pop's up like big bang in your mind but clearly visible in your eyes 😉 every honor, master of communication. I have a hard time because I wander in almost every letter, let alone words or sentences, when I meet them in my own thoughts about a problem, and especially when I try to explain it to someone. That's a big problem for me. Can you explain and help me in more detail, or better yet, how do you solve it in your brain to communicate with the general public in such an elegant way today !? Or is it simply your gift from God?
Sir, we talk of singularity , big bang hypothesis and inflation theory. Do we have any kind of probable explanation why this sigularity as it is being explained ? From where did this pop up ? What's prior to this? ....
Professor,How do I teach myself mathematics during lockdown ? The libraries are closed and I can’t get any books for now.If you recommend online courses, What online courses should I do?
How can you still be in lockdown? I live in Seattle and for the past month or more the city has reopened and masks are even an option. Most of us have been vaccinated and the world appears to be getting back to normal. Your post reminds me of a year ago! Washington’s Governor made masks mandatory from the beginning and now the world is returning to normalcy!
A question Brian. The gravitational wave created by merger of blackholes and other mergers detected by ligo... won't these waves hit other objects in space and create compounded waves?
Well Brian ..Is Wittens 4 mins at Strings"the I dont Know ..a confirmation for the path away from the field ..or are you going to default to the Cat is alive and dead...
35:17, Idk, Doc. The first thing I would ask is, "Can we determine from where came the energy and the information which were required to reassemble the wine glass?" And, of course, it would apply to any liquid that might have spilled in the process, as well. Which means that it would have to apply to every single particle, wave, and wavefunction in the universe, since they are all "tied together" and they all can all have an effect on each other, even if it is an infinitesimal effect. Finally, all of the above makes me wonder if we could even survive any potential event like this, as the energy would be astronomical (pun shamelessly intended). (Tangential Question) But that makes me wonder: Just how much energy and how much spacetime would be required in order for "this universe", per its original, non-Everettian meaning, to "remember" the previous configuration of every single wavefunction of every single particle at that specific spacetime event? (Another Tangential Question): Also, wouldn't the answer to my latter question be similar to the anti-Simulation Hypothesis argument along the lines that, "It would take a universe the size of the universe to be able to simulate the universe"? (Yet Another Tangential Question) Would the liquid require more or less information and energy, all else being equal, in order to put every single atom and subatomic particle back precisely as it had been in the past, as compared to the (basically) solid glass? My point is that perhaps, if it didn't kill us, when that or a similar event would occur, maybe we would be able to observe the sources of the energy and the information on how to structure every single Planck volume, and we might see that, overall, the entropy of the universe after this event somehow increased despite the reconfiguration of the glass and its contents.
Prof. Brian, How could you respond to the paradoxes of special relativity proposed by the article "The Ultimate Sophistication of Special Theory of Relativity" published in IJFPS
Good to hear Prof greene say there is no consensus about the jets emanating from black holes. I have heard other scientists speak as if all science is settled on what they are and what causes them. I accepted their explanations because they spoke with such authority but always had my doubts mainly because nothing is supposed to escape from a black hole because of its gravity so how could these jets come out of them? Will have to check them out further.
Hi World Science Festival, thanks for the great videos. Small request: would it be hard to display the question submitted and the user’s social somewhere on the video in the future?
I have a question about how galaxies, stars and planets are spinning in what direction from the universe. Accordingly from some articles, our earth probably started to spin from dusk and cloud from the sun (CCW), but Venus and Uranus are really spinning from different way (CW). Are these two planets affected in same solar system (same cloud and dust), even some theories said Venus and Uranus were hit by other objects and changed their spinning direction? Also how things have been rotating after big bang?
Thank you.great discousion .vary refreshing.and uplifting.from a state that I'm in thank you to all your lisnner the planets new adults.starseeds. thank you for making it better for all
Prof Ashok Kanetkar, India Hi Professor Greene, As far as I understand Prof. Einstein showed that Gravity is the result of the distortion of the SpaceTime by heavy objects rather than a Force which acts instantaneously at great distances as envisioned by Sir Isaac Newton, then why are the scientists trying to quantise Gravity which is not a force akin to say the electro-magnetic force? How can you envision a Graviton when gravity is not really a force or is it?
@@sudokuinminutes we don’t really understand time or gravity, we only know that gravity affects time. Why therefore do you assume that there is no connection? Go stand near to event horizon of a black hole and you may come to the same conclusion as I do
Coachella CA. Mexican dude, GED. I loved that space time and and tic toc...i won't easy believe in aliens.. what's up with artificial rain in Dubai, isn't the effect cause higher consequences to the earth . I tell people your the Einstein of our time.
Professor, What would you recommend to teach myself Maths during lockdown?I can’t go to the library so At this moment I can’t get any books. And if you would recommend online courses what courses should I take?
Odd temperature pockets in the MBR can also be evidence of black holes that existed at the end of the universe that came before ours big banged onto the scene. There are lots of possibilities and theories that do not require a simultaneous multiversal existence to explain.
I agree with what he said about the misinformation and this pandemic. I disagree on bringing this subject in this format. Science and politics do not mix.
Ok, warped space in turn, creates the effect of gravity, redirecting the path of objects that travel into it. But how do we explain the stretching of IO moon of Jupiter. Because gravity force is just warping of space time.
Hi I am sriram from india from 6th grade and i have a doubt. albert einstien told that a small amount mass can be converted to a large amount of energy so if this is true then the mass is converted to energy in space with no planets , galaxies , stars etc then what will the energy act on then the energy from the mass is zero untill it acts on something ? . is it true

But that makes me wonder: Just how much energy and how much spacetime would be required in order for "this universe", per its original, non-Everettian meaning, to "remember" the previous configuration of every single wavefunction of every single particle at that specific spacetime event?
(Another Tangential Question):
Also, wouldn't the answer to my latter question be similar to the anti-Simulation Hypothesis argument along the lines that, "It would take a universe the size of the universe to be able to simulate the universe"?
(Yet Another Tangential Question)
Would the liquid require more or less information and energy, all else being equal, in order to put every single atom and subatomic particle back precisely as it had been in the past, as compared to the (basically) solid glass?
My point is that perhaps, if it didn't kill us, when that or a similar event would occur, maybe we would be able to observe the sources of the energy and the information on how to structure every single Planck volume, and we might see that, overall, the entropy of the universe after this event somehow increased despite the reconfiguration of the glass and its contents.
Yes, drinking less would do you good. ;-)
Why is a rock flying around represent a form of life? Its a rock with some elements?
are these live streams no longer a thing? or how can we know when the next one is?
Thanks!
good stories teller
Can we, then, modulate, filter and phase-shift gravity waves like we do other electromagnetic waves?
Yes, but it is extremely expensive. ;-)
Good day
Great content
I like String Theory because it provides the simplest explanation.
Yes together with sir tyson
Most of all because of respect to my values,

Will have to check them out further.
can time be considered continuous?
Last time you were streaming it was winter ❄️ behind you
Hi World Science Festival, thanks for the great videos. Small request: would it be hard to display the question submitted and the user’s social somewhere on the video in the future?
Tha important is do what you want aslong you don’t give a problem to others. Do good to feel better
We all are atoms in this universe, who behave differently.
Brilliant book. please read it
Thank you.great discousion .vary refreshing.and uplifting.from a state that I'm in thank you to all your lisnner the planets new adults.starseeds. thank you for making it better for all
Yes i got u, but i set aside all , first a just want to feel free together with my family specially with my mom

Please, convince Steven Pinker to buy a microphone! He’s so brilliant and the sound doesn’t catch up
Oh, Its too short this time
Greetings from Finland, south easter part of gulf of finland, your backround there looks lot like my summer cabin yard minus the sea
Brian, is it possible that gravity and time are the same thing?
@@sudokuinminutes we don’t really understand time or gravity, we only know that gravity affects time. Why therefore do you assume that there is no connection? Go stand near to event horizon of a black hole and you may come to the same conclusion as I do
Any thoughts on the UFO report released by the Pentagon? Possible explanations?
Yes, I read Paul Steinhardt's book "Endless Universe: Beyond the Big Bang". It is indeed a fascinating alternative theory that he presents.
That was great.
Susanna from Lima Peru. What are the latest discoveries on String Theory?

Hi I am sriram from india from 6th grade and i have a doubt. albert einstien told that a small amount mass can be converted to a large amount of energy so if this is true
then the mass is converted to energy in space with no planets , galaxies , stars etc then what will the energy act on then the energy from the mass is zero untill it acts on something ? . is it true
