What is the timeline of hair regrowth after hair transplant- What to expect & When?

  • Hair transplant is a surgical procedure with a recovery time span before results set in. But the patient would want to know the timeline of hair regrowth after hair transplant- what to to expect & when to expect it. He wants to know how long it will take his grafts to regrow, what he should expect during the timespan of recovery and when to expect the result after hair transplant. Patients are mostly impatient and for a reason. After a period of shedding that starts after 7 days after the procedure and continues till 4-6 weeks, the follicles begin to regrow.
The hair regrowth is slow and steady and often tardy when medication is ignored after hair transplant. Till the 4 month mark hair are wispy thin and the growth of transplanted hair is pretty much see-through. The hairline is not distinct. This is the ugly duckling phase in many ways and the patient who has received the FUE hair transplant begins to wonder when he will see a result after the hair transplant. He starts to compare before and after results on youtube to the extent that he gets obsessed. Hence for the benefit of such people so they get a clear picture of the time period when their hair will grow back after the hair transplant, in this video I have provided a timeline of hair growth after hair transplant till the patient gets a complete result. This starts from the day after the procedure and continues upto 5 months mark and then at 6 months when the result is almost complete. 9-12 months following the hair transplant is the consolidation phase in the timeline for the result. So when a patient asks me when he will get a result, I often state that the shedding period after hair transplant will be complete at 4-6 weeks, and then hair will begin to break through the skin. This is associated with itching which is a good sign of regrowth. Regrowth is aided by taking DHT blockers. At the months mark there is a distinct change in appearance when the hairline had grown out. However the hairs are thin and lack body of fullness. This is made up for rather fast in the next one month till the patient reaches the 6 months mark. After 6 months in the period after hair transplant in the timeline it is 85 % result achieved. Remaining 15% happens between 9-12 months.

The process starts on 7th day post-procedure in most, and continues till 4 weeks are over and sometimes a little longer. A small percentage never shed after a hair transplant. How early you get a result depends upon the pure anagen grafts transplanted and also how much you have shed in this time period.

Best content on internet about hair transplant by far. Congrats, sir!
One of the topics I've never seen being discussed is whether there is a visible difference between native miniaturized/miniaturizing hair and and brand new transplanted hair, say, by 3-6 months after hair transplant. Do they look exactly the same? Dr. Bhatti points out that the hair is there, but can't be seen. Some images under a microscope would help one understand the concept

Hey Doctor, thank you for your informative video.
Wonder if you can give advice, I had HT Dec 2019 which gave great results from completely bold top to relatively decent hair, thin & not dense but couldn’t complain.
However for past 2 weeks after 18 months my hair at top is dropping off aggressively and can see visually in the comb or when I brush my hand through my hair. Also now visually noticeable.
    Why and what is this?
    Can this be fixed?
    Anything I can do?
Will it grow back or Is this it, lasted 18 months back and now back to bold?
Your advice will be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance

No restriction for areas not operated. Operated areas after 6 weeks.

5% Minoxidil once a day is fine after a hair transplant. 4.5 months after a hair transplant is early to expect results. Wait till 6-9 months. Till then keep taking the DHT blocker Finasteride 1 mg a day if you are a candidate for this drug.

Shedding after hair transplant occurs in 7 days-6 weeks period but some people do not shed. At 2 and 3 months there is no growth seen. Usually, within 3 and a half-4 months growth of transplanted hair first becomes visible.
The itchiness is likely to be related to minoxidil solution due to its alcohol content. If you are applying minoxidil solution, you can switch to minoxidil foam if itching is unbearable.
      Also, are you on finasteride?

In the normal course if all was optimal, after 4 months there should be rapid growth . You can stop Minoxidil if you are taking Finastreide- but always on advice of treating surgeon.

If the first transplant has not gone well in terms of the coverage of the entire temple area or say as a patient I feel the hairline should've been more dense, what is the earliest I can go for a second treatment, it may not be a full fledged session but one in which fine-tuning happens. What is your advise?

    • @hairtransplantinindia
      @hairtransplantinindia  3 роки тому

Yes density can be added. But what is important to determine is the quality of your scalp donor. and the need for DHT blockers before embarking on this journey again. Because hair transplant is not the only thing needed to get good results. Why the hair did not grow dense needs to be evaluated.

Best content on this topic.. I was afraid becoz its 5 months since I had my Hair transplant. I have less density nly and my head is visible..Less in the sense am not able to comb my hair, its patchy and very less dense. Will new hair growth be there or only the existing hair thickens?

At 6 months 85% of the result is achieved. Wait a bit longer before you judge the result. Have you been taking the medication after hair translant?

Hair will fall and grow back. That is it's cycle and it's fate! Hair is living tissue. Living tissue is not immortal.
