Rabat is the capital of Morocco. It is located in the Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region. It has a population of 717,572 people according to the 2014 census. It is located on the Atlantic coast in a wide flat plain, on the left bank of the Bouregreg River estuary, which separates it from the city of Salé. The city is famous for its textile industry and is home to Mohammed V University, the first modern university established in the Kingdom.
The Almohads established the current capital of Morocco in the middle of the twelfth century AD, in which Abd al-Mu’min built the “Ribbat al-Fath” which is the nucleus of a fortified city that included, in addition to the castle, a mosque and a Caliphate house. His grandson Yaqoub Al-Mansour is considered the true founder of the city of Rabat. Several historians have mentioned that the completion of the city's construction was during the era of Abu Yusuf Al-Mansour, including the wall and gates. Rabat won second place in CNN's "Top Tourist Destination 2013" list.
