    This was really interesting! Your tools worked pretty slick and save you a lot of time in carving. Can't wait to see the final river!

    Nice job on the river area and a great tool for the foam work.

      Thank you Derek I appreciate that! I'm happy with the tool, the price was right too instead of what it could be from some other places.

    Very informative presentation. It is interesting to watch your layout developing. I hope you will do some more "how I do it" videos.

      Thanks Craig! I plan on it! I just haven’t yet, I’ve been mainly trying to refine the track work and fix some siding stuff I didn’t do well initially to make it more reliable. Plus it seems I’ve done nothing but locomotive tune ups.

    A very nice and informative video. I plan on having rivers and foam scenery on my layout, but want to learn as much as I can given that I'm a model railroading novice. I also believe I have the same paper mill building (in the background) for my layout, though I think I'll go for a smaller-scale industry.

      That's exciting! You will do great! Do you have any specific areas or industries you want to model? I have the room on this one to do two major ones (Ethanol and Grain). But layouts of any size are always fun when you make them what you want them to be! Share some pictures or videos of your progress too, and don't be afraid to reach out with any questions!

      @@joes2fst4umodelrr Thank you very much for your kind words and willingness to help :). Goodness knows I've probably asked hundreds of questions since I began planning my layout five or so years ago.
      In terms of what I want to model, I'm looking to create a mountain town with small-scale industries that is served by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1940s-50s era. Such industries will include a coal mine, grain elevator, lumber yard, paper mill, telegraph/telephone wire factory, and a freight depot. I'll also have two areas for locomotive maintenance (an ash pit and engine/machine shop) as well as a yard in which to store engines and rolling stock.
      I have yet to get the benchwork started for my layout, but I will happily share videos of my progress from construction to completion and operation, and also plan on creating videos on other railroad-related topics. Thanks again!!

      @@Stussmeister That sounds like a great plan! Mountain railroads are beautiful! And that will be a fun era to model for it! One of my favorite mountain model railroads to watch is the Oregon Joint Line N Scale, he has great videos! Feel free to keep asking as many questions as you want, that's how we all grow! I'm no expert, just willing to share my experiences too!

      @@joes2fst4umodelrr Thank you again for your kind words and willingness to help me :). I'll definitely have to check that channel out, and will let you know once I do. As for me, I'm not an expert in anything, though I've done a little bit of research in railroad history and random railroad facts, so if you have questions of that sort, I'd be happy to look into it and attempt to answer them for you.

    The top of my N-Scale layout is 2" XPS Foamboard, I want a river but it looks like I will have to carve it out of the 2" foamboard base, How deep do you think you would need for it to look in scale? I'm also a little scared about carving too deep and going through the foamboard base. But If I only need an inch then I think it's doable.
    Are you planning to pour resin? I'm scared of resin, I'm looking into other things instead of resin, not sure how it would react to XPS FB. Nice Video! Looking forward to seeing the river completed.

      Hello there! It really depends on what the area is you’re modeling. If it’s a more rocky hilly area it’s pretty typical to see steep rock sides and a river that’s a good distance down from the bridge. If you’re more modeling a more flat area you could carve in maybe a half inch and it would look pretty normal. Most all rivers are not even on the bottom either so let that play in to your own river as you carve, you don’t need to make it perfectly flat.
      I have two more videos I think you’d find helpful! One is using the Woodland Scenics Realistic Water which will be a great option! Resin is nice but it heats up a lot during its curing process and could melt your foam board a bit. The woodland scenics one I show doesn’t do that. Then there’s a third video I have on using the Woodland Scenics Water Ripple Effects and I think you’d like that too, plus you’ll see how the river looks completed. Let me know if you have more questions I’m happy to help!

    Hey Joe. So I have one question. Is there any way that you can make a river or creek out of real water? I think if you wanted to make a waterfall you could use real water. As long as it is far away from the track. Oh just thinking that's all. I do like your layout it's pretty cool.

    • @joes2fst4umodelrr
      @joes2fst4umodelrr  Рік тому

      Thanks James! Actually yes you can, I've seen one person do it before using one of the fountain pumps from the cheapo fountains from walmart (those tabletop ones). You have to basically seal it really well and make sure that it is tapered to flow in the direction you want it to. They used distilled water which really helped keep it clean and looking nice. It's harder to do in smaller scales but not impossible, it is more commonly used for garden railroads though too.
